Title: The Family Treasure
Post by: on Tue 24/01/2006 19:49:54
Here is my MAGS game (January 2006). I know, I know it's another pirate game, i have no defense against thatÃ,  ;D.

Help Captain Bloodhook Flamebeard find his old family treasure. Forty years of search have brought him close to its hiding place, but his crew abandoned him as they grow tired of this hopeless quest. But Bloodhook is not alone as some others also seek the family treasure.

I'm glad you confessÃ,  ;)

I haven't seen too much of the game yet (still on the raft), but it looks excellent so far! Seems to be a great month for MAGS.

But there's one problem: I had to rename the familytreasure.exe to losttreasure.exe, because winsetup looked for this name.

The graphics are awesome, but the story is a bit cliche.
The puzzles are a bit easy. I liked it anyway
Good luck with the competition.

Just had a crash when I right clicked on one of the Pirates.

Error: The character 'Tony' could not be displayed because there were no frames in loop 3 of view 46.

I'm sure this goes into the Hints and Tips page..but..

To make the rudder use the plank and a piece of rope, then the "stick" (can't remember the name xD)

Once you fix them both use the shovel in any part of the map you want to move

superb game, buloght. i thouroughly enjoyed this game! this is definetely in my top 10 of my favourite AGS games. the humour and dialogue are written expertly and hilariously, and the graphics are awesome. puzzles were logical, and the characters were amazing! i could see u spend some time on the animations, which were really good.

other than the game being about pirates, i didnt find anything cliche about it. and i dont mind more games with pirates in them anyway. lucklily i didnt encounter any bugs.  ;)

thx.

ure my vote as mags winner by far!

Small bugs:
Spoiler
After getting the lens, you can get it again (and again, and again =)
When I played through it the second time, there was a scene with the captain of the crescent voyage. The first time, the game suddeny ended after they had found the treasure, so I though it had hit a QuitGame() and didn't think of it as a bug.

I just finished it without any bugs. :)

Very nice game! Too short though.

A few puzzles were a bit illogical to me, but most puzzles were logical but not too obvious.

Great graphics, music did get a bit repetitive. Great characters, very funny!

Okay: I updated the link with a fixed version, to knowledge there are no more bugs ... we'll see for how long  ;)

I also downloaded it again to see if it really works, i went past that part with no bugs. So hopefully i won't have to upload again :)

Sorry. grrr.

You'd better bring us more games, or I'm hunting you down and stealing your brain.

Yes, that'll be why it did that. Unfortunately the Mac version always runs in 32-bit, no matter what the original colour depth was, so problems like this will show up with games that were 16-bit and use RawDraw functions and so on.

There is no cure I'm afraid apart from awaiting a new version of the Mac AGS player.

Loving this game, by the way. You make drawing beautiful backgrounds look easy.

Thanks steve, and for explaining that. I didn't know about that.

For interest sake (i'm not very smart), would it help if the game's colour depth was changed 32-bit?
Title: Re: The Family Treasure

Yes, I think it would.

Before releasing a 32-bit version for the mac, you could give me a link and I can check it works. I may have to bug you (or check the hints and tips forum) to test the offending (no offence!) part.

Hey buloght, I finally had time to finish this game, and I have to say it was the best I've played all year :).Ã,  It's a little gem of a game, totally unexpected, and it kind of felt like finding $20 on the sidewalk.Ã,  The art was practical and cute, the puzzles were mostly intuitive, and it was just long enough to leave the rest of us wondering "Who is this buloght guy?"

Also,
Spoiler
"Here Claws, read my mind!"
[close]
had me laughing out loud for a good while.Ã,

My only bit of unsolicited advice is about some of the interactions.
Spoiler
For example, I felt like "use shovel on water" should have done something at the beginning, as it's not obvious that you can use it with the map to move around (at least it wasn't to me).Ã,  Later on, "use telescope on cliff" didn't make as much sense to me as, say "use telescope on Captain Bloodhook."
[close]

These are just nitpicky things to think about; like I said the game was fantastic, and it's even more amazing that you got it all done in time for a MAGS.Ã,  Hope to see you around the forums :).

But when I used a previously saved game it worked fine for some reason.

The reason for it not working is our entire province's power was down (some problems from the power people) so the server was done too. But the power is back up, obviously since i'm typing this. sorry for that  :)

Sounds cool. I can't download it right now, I'm on the school computer. I'll do it when I come home.

The background on your screenshot seems cool and I suspect there will be other good backgrounds in the game.

The character sprites are nice done and the inventory items seems cool as well.

Now...
WHO IS THE OTHER ONES SEEKING FOR THE TREASURE!?!?!?

welll after spending half an hour figuring out how in hell could I get that lens (for some reason the obvious solution was escaping me) the rest of the game was smooth and very enjoyable

two more remarks: that thing with using the branches and cutlass, didn't quite get it, even though I figured it out and some hotspots weren't actually that easy to find. otherwise the game was really good and fun to play  :)

Thanks for this beautiful game!
Funny dialogs, cool graphic style!

Some notes:
I think the lens was quite a pixel hunt.
Moving around on the map was not as intuitive as it could have been.
And I didn't get why I couldn't just dig up the treasure but had to set up this thing with the wheel and rope.

However, all in all a great game. I enjoyed playing it from beginning to end.
I'm looking forward to a sequel  :)

Beautifull game indeed.

I dont know didnt have the pixel hunt problems, maybe the map was a bit wierd...

Research that puzzle it was actually quite kewl when I went looking what the theory behind it was.
Wikipedia it, theres actually a real story behind it.

I made so that you don't have to interact with the lense but instead with the crow's nest, sorry i should have maybe made that more clear in the readme :)

Yes, the block and tackle and sunken ground is based on a real pirate treasure story. :)

Well, I must say,
After I dug the last treasure, i was left with a kind of a mediocre feeling of the game, with only a small dose of character building, and with some un obvious puzzles.

But then, coming in the very last moment, a last twist in the story just hit the spot. I was wanting for some kind of twist and you really did a great job on sparking interest in the characters and the story at the end.
Very nice!

Overall nice game with a couple of flaws (or things I happened to dislike).

The graphical style was very nice, simple yet very effective. Nice job on that. I didn't like your choice of music though, I mean, sure it was very fitting and stuff, but I just didn't like the tunes.

I very much disliked the fact that I wasn't able to select walk mode by right clicking. That's one of the things that makes the Lucas Arts interface so user-friendly. I also noticed something strange with the mouse over text, but I can't quite explain what it was. Like sometimes it didn't work or was delayed.

Some of the puzzles were quite eh... silly? Like
Spoiler
getting the plank that is floating in the sea. I tried to use the mast because I SAW THAT IT WOULD EASILY REACH THE PLANK... and I get a message that it's not long enough. I mean come on.

Another one was the levering the rock one. In situations like this I would always make it so that you can use several different items to do the job.

The ending was a disappoinment, too.

But other than that, nice job. It was a fun game to play.

No, that's not what I mean. The text that displays the name of hotspots. Sometimes I didn't get the name of the hotspot (even though the cursor clearly was over the hotspot), sometimes the text kept blinking and sometimes the text updated slightly after moving the cursor over the hotspot.
Title: Re: The Family Treasure

i didn't see anything wrong with the text and had no problems with it. i think buloght uses the normal ags text functions. so it must be only on your computer, petteri?
Title: Re: The Family Treasure

I got the same problem as Petteri too, I think it's down to the cursor trails being characters and not having their 'clickable' property unchecked so they occasionally obscure the hotspots when they move around. Just a little niggle though, nothing game destroying ;)

I don't understand this. It never happens to me. I use normal @overhotspot@ I've played the game through about 200 times looking for things people say and it never happens to me.

You assume wrong, the trails are each a small GUI. They don't obscure hotspots as they are turned off when the mouse stop. I can't find what you are talking about.

The trail sometimes flicker when you move the mouse very slowly, that happens because i turn them off when the mouse stops and on again when the mouse moves, what's wrong with that?
Title: Re: The Family Treasure
Post by: Adamski on Mon 27/02/2006 21:25:06
Sometimes if you move the mouse in a certain way the trail will shoot underneath it quickly, which will obscure anything interactable for a split second. As I said, it's only a niggle and it happens rarely, but I was just backing up Petteri as I feared his comment would get brushed aside as 'user error'.

Besides that, it's a pretty good game taking into account the time in which it was made! It could definatly benefit from some tweaking here and there but I'm sure you're aware yourself what areas could be improved upon ;)

I look forward to seeing a new original project from you!
Title: Re: The Family Treasure
Post by: on Mon 27/02/2006 22:43:09
Yes, thanks for all the comments. I made the trail so that they don't shoot under the mouse, they always trail behind and are never actually assigned the mouse coordinates, they are removed before they can get to it's location. Well that was the intention, maybe just not a very good scriptor.  :-[

I'll try and improve and take everything into consideration for future games.

hey and I want to give you some suggestions
- frist try to make it so taht when you right click on anything you look. (i say this because right click and look buttons give diffrent messages for the same thing)
- after a successful action return the mouse pointer to walk mode

Ugh...well, to each his own, but personally I hate it when a game does this, and hope this is not done in a future version...

As for the raft question, by the way (the following is directed more to buloght than to avatar):
Spoiler
I have to admit, this part I found very counterintuitive as well.  I was pretty sure I had to use the shovel as an oar, but for a long time I couldn't figure out how to do it; it wasn't at all obvious that the map was an interactable screen--especially since using the Interact icon on it anywhere but on the raft didn't give any message, and Interacting with the raft gave the message "I can't do anything to the raft while looking at the map".  I did eventually get it, but mostly just by dint of trying everything on everything.  It might help if there were some message when you tried to use the shovel on the water (something like "I'll need a specific destination in mind"), or when you tried to Interact with a location on the map (maybe something like "I need some means of propulsion to get there"), or, preferably, both.

This is just a minor criticism; overall I thought it was a great game.  But yeah, that raft part was frustrating, and more for reasons of counterintuitive interface (at least, counterintuitive for me) than for the actual puzzle.
[close]

Oh, and while I'm on the subject, by the way, I found a minor bug when I played the game; sorry if this has already been reported:

Spoiler
Using anything on the (unreinforced) stick gave the message "I'll only need the skin" (or something like that; I don't recall the exact words).  Obviously this is intended to refer to the pointy plants, but it doesn't make any sense if, for example, you try to use your cutlass on the stick and you get that message...
[close]

Hope I'm not coming across as too critical here; like I said, overall I thought it was a great game, and the above two matters are just minor issues.
Title: Re: The Family Treasure
Post by: on Fri 03/03/2006 20:37:43
I enjoyed the game's story and the references to Monkey Island.

The only issue i had was clicking on objects in my inventory and the action buttons... if i moved over something it would take a few seconds before it was recognized and i usually had to click twice in a sense before i got the right action to happen.

Otherwise I enjoyed the game and the puzzles were alright.

Thanks fanton.

I have fixed the following (WILL UPLOAD MONDAY):

- made the Discworld Trial GUI's unclickable so now they don't interfere anymore (i'm embarresed to say that i now see the difference than before, i myself had to click twice sometimes, but no matter, now you only always have to click once haha.)
- when you right click on a non-hotspot area the mouse mode switches to walk mode (right click on hotspot it either automatically looks or talks if it's a character, but this was so when i first released the gameÃ,  8) )
- I corrected a few spelling errors.

Just those two first points makes the game a lot more user-friendly in terms of clicking without problems haha and the Discworld Trial still exists but has no effect on the clicking. Thanks for the comment on that. Will upload new version Monday.

AND:

Expect a sequel this year sooner than later of full-length where the story goes deeper and less cliche (hopefully) with more characters and locations :) and (hopefully) upgraded graphics.

I truelly thank everybody for giving me feedback, negative and positive.Ã,  :)

Hey john :) I compiled a version for 32-bit but today i actually tested it and it crashed for me when in that same part because i saved all the bitmaps for the game in 24-bit so it's of different colour depth and i got some sort of error for that. I uploaded a more friendly-user version of TFT. (like I said I would before)

- right click on non-hotspots change mouse mode to walk
- made Discworld following mouse trail non-clickable so they'll never interfere with mouse clicks again
- corrected a couple of spelling errors
- added a track to make music less repetititititive

Thanks for feedback. :)

I must say that the drawings could be improved upon, they were good but would have been better with more colour (and sometimes, more detail). I suppose if you'd had at least an extra month...

There should be more MI-style games, especially in the drawing style of SOMI. Later editions, including MI2, were not as charming as I had hoped.

You mention that pirate games aren't very original, does that mean that there are more MI-style (AGS) games around that I don't know about? Also, looking forward to playing the sequel to this one!
Title: Re: The Family Treasure
Post by: on Tue 07/03/2006 19:59:02
Thanks for playing DutchMarco. I'll try and make the sequel more detailed since I'm spending way more than month on that :) The reason i guess for the plain bgs is because i'm not skilled in brushing so i went plain pixel and i find that sometimes doing too much detail with plain pixel is dangerous territory in cartoony games, especially if you're still new to pixel graphics. You could easily create inconsistencies and ruin the cartoony feel. I'm trying to learn brushing :)

There are a few more pirate games around, and a lot of pirate fangames and MI games have been made. I can think of one that's in production which is a really unique pirate game made by Ali, and then there's also one made by Helm. There is also Return to Monkey Island and Amulet of Monkey Island (though i think the last one doesn't use AGS) I can't think of them all now :) I guess when one makes a pirate game it's hard to do something Monkey Island hasn't done, but i think there is still plenty of oppurtunity for original pirate games :)

I played this right through. It was excellent. I didn't mind that it was about pirates, because it was quite different to monkey island in many ways.

The graphics worked well with the story line. The music was well placed. The puzzels weren't too easy which is GOOD. I absolutely hate playing easy games :)

It was all very well placed. The only thing I got annoyed with was figuring out you had to use the shovel on the map to move the raft. The rest was very well done.

Character interaction was good and the characters had considerable depth for a fan game.

9/10

This is a great game! I loved the piraty feel and interface, and the option of taking your hook off was pretty neat and original (as far as I know). Good clean backgrounds and logical (for the most part) puzzles. My only criticism is two spelling errors that I saw. I can't remember exactly where they were, but "sais" was used instead of "says", and.......rats, i can't remember the other one...I'll modify this if I can think of it.

I'd consider myself a below average adventure gamer, but I played the game through in about 40 min. It was very enjoyable. Keep up the good work guys!

sythe: Thanks for the very kind comments :)

royals10: Thanks. I'll try and get them spelling errors out :) I already fixed a couple, but thanks for letting me know, I thought I had gotten all of them.

For some reason I wasn't able to download this.  The main site didn't respond -- the mirror site gave me a download, but I got the error message "bad zip header" and when I unzipped anyway, the game would not function at all.

I can remember a similiar error, however I got past it by using WinRAR, not zip or so I think at least.  :P

I use IZarc, but I'll try WinRar instead.  Thanks.
