The Doctor and Sarah find themselves thrown into a web of intergalactic intrigue and mystery after the TARDIS makes a forced landing in occupied France. The Nazis are ensnaring Time/Space vessels and amassing a collection of technology advanced enough to change the course of history. But who is the mysterious BENEFACTOR who is aiding the Nazis? What evil foe lurks in the basement? What is the secret of "Excalibur's Glory"? Will the Doctor be able to solve a mystery which will take him from Earth to Pluto to the edge of the Universe and beyond before Time itself is destroyed - forever...?

Find out....

Looks like you're off to a good start, and reading the info you provided it seems you're a real card-carrying "Dr. Who Fan"  ;)  Screen-shots look great from what I can see of them, and plot seems interesting.

Of course you know that Dr. Who is a real classic with a large following for a few decades, so "don't mess it up", or else we'll send "Esper" over to choke you and hang you from the Tardis with a long colorful scarf  :=

Good luck with your project. It's nice to see a new comer abiding by the rules here and putting some thought and effort into such a bold project.

Interesting. I never watched Dr Who as a kid, but I like the new one quite a bit.

*whine* Indy paintover *end whine*

But otherwise, looks great. Hope you can live up to other peoples expectations. Its suprising that no-one has attempted a Doctor game before... or maybe they have and it never materialised.

Keep it up buddy.

Or maybe the holders of the copyright went back in time and stopped it from happening in the "first place"  ;D
Looks good, having never watched Dr.Who I can't add much, but good luck to you.

It's about time someone decided to make a Doctor Who adventure game :) I always thought this was perfect for the genre, same thing goes for stargate, which im glad someone made a good game from that.

I have a Dalek walkcycle in one of my games. Devilshly hard thing to do! I agonized over it for nights. "But is it rolling left to right Dalek-y enough?" Almost as hard as putting R2-D2 in a game, I tell you!

Seriously, I plan to follow this game's development. I loves the old Doctor Who. I hope the scarf will be a vital part of the game.

Well, considering the game stars the fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith, I'd assume K9 would be in it. The perso working on the game hasn't posted in a while though, hopefully we'll hear some news on it soon.

And if you are reading this, don't forget to give the Doctor some jelly babies in his inventory. And make "Would you like a jelly baby?" a dialog option many, MANY times.

Bumping this to let people know I'm still working on the game. Had a bit of a hiatus where I decided I couldn't draw backgrounds well enough...

...I figured, what the hell. So it's back on. I've made a fully interactive TARDIS environment, which will be a sort of 'linking' device between the four episodes - while the TARDIS is in flight you'll be able to wander around the Doctors' ship looking for clues and references to the places you've visited and the places you've been. Sort of like the Ebon Hawk if anyone's played the KOTOR games.

I'm hoping to progress onto the first part of the story shortly, which, as outlined above, deals with a sinister Nazi plot in a WWII occupied france.

Subsequent episodes will reveal the plot going deeper, with a linked storyline spreading across three different time zones.

Doctor Who affictionados can expect appearances from the Brigadier and Harry Sullivan during an episode set on 1970s Earth....

And yes, there will be at least one Dalek.

I've revised the original post to include new screenshots!

The screenshots look good so far. Seems like there's a lot going on in this game ... Nazi's, Daleks, multiple planets ... I hope you can pull it all together! Anyway, it looks interesting. Take your time, have fun with it.

Yeah, sorry, the demo's now obsolete because I started over from the ground up. Hope to have one at some point though - hopefuly containing the intro and at least part of 'Episode One'.

The TARDIS now has a fiinished kitchen, Swimming Pool and Power Room, so for the moment I guess it's finished. I'm starting work on the Chateau, characters contained within and environs this week.

Will post more progress in a few days.

I'd like a jelly baby, thank you!

Looks good. Will you be simulating the spraying "shaving cream" effect when a Dalek dies?  :)

My only comment: the Doctor never really wore his hat that much, did he? It seems like he'd always crumple it up and stuff it in one of his pockets.

Interesting you should say that. I've actually drawn a hatless version of the Doctor sprite. depending on whether I feel I've got the patience, I may have the doctor lose/hang up/pocket his hat at some point in the game.

UPDATE Sept 11th

Well, Demo is about 80% done. I need to do an intro and and outro (the cliffhanger ending is in place!),  some bits and bobs like doors opening and things, and add sound and music.
Here are some more bits for anyone who's interested:

Looking spiffy keen so far.Ã,  :)

My only suggestion from what I see at this point might be to perhaps put a little more space (pixel gap) between the dialog options to more clearly seperate them. That way it is now, sometimes it seems one option just blends right into the next.

Keep up da good work.

I think this is a cool idea but you would have to make double animations for everything unless he loses his hat very early on. It looks like a great game, cant wait for the demo.

The Demo is ALMOST ready for public use!

Everything is pretty much done. It's basically the first 'episode' - an intro sequence, twelve or thirteen screens, two or three puzzles, lots of talking and a cliffhanger ending. I've scored the game with the sublime music of the wonderful Dudley Simpson - I've not sought permission or anything, and will remove it if anyone involved in the copyright wants me to.

I'm in the middle of planning both the resolution to the cliffhanger and the next set of locations now...

I'm hoping to have the Demo ready for upload in a matter of days. But I need soime help! A couple of sound effects have eluded me. If anyone has an old style ringing phone sample they could send me, that would be great.

I await people's verdict with baited breath...

Awesome work! Good solid graphics -- the TARDIS/Time Vortex sequence was quite lovely. Where your demo really shines is the dialogue! You've made distinct and interesting personalities for each of the secondary characters, but as far as the Doctor himself is concerned, the dialog is spot on! Douglas Adams would be proud. :) Not many puzzles, but of course it's only the demo, but the puzzles you put together were logical and intuitive. Maybe a bit on the predictable side, but that's not necessarily bad early on in a game. I did have an issue with sound -- none played during the demo, and I did get an error that the game couldn't initialize my MIDI device. I've been having some sound issues with my computer recently though, so that may not be any fault of your demo.

If you keep up this level of quality, you're well on your way to making a true gem of a point'n'click adventure. Keep up the good work!

The intro and music have assured that I will play this when complete.  One thing that bothered me though was the doctor's talk animation, he keeps popping back his jacket over and over.  Perhaps you could just have him with his jacket back when he talks?  Aside from a few floating pixels in the animations here and there I think you've done a fine job.  Keep up the good work!

Yes, looks, sounds and plays excellent so far!
I like the paintovers of other characters and the cut and pasted backgrounds. The doctor in particular is a great sprite.
And some good snappy dialog.
Looking forward to the full game!

Two things:
1. you don't need to distrubute the wav files - they are compiled into the vox file.
2. you can use mp3 or ogg to reduce the size of the sounds and music.

I left the sound files there because some of them don't play when I take them out - yet others do. I don't have this problem with the Music files, so am a little confused.

I did try the demo on a completely different computer. I had to fiddle with the sound config a little bit -- specifically, I changed the sound to "Default WaveOut Device" and "Win32 MIDI Mapper," and then it worked perfectly on the second computer. I'm not sure what's going on with my computer, but I'm pretty sure it's a problem specific to that machine. I recently had problems with sound that wouldn't play for Flash videos, and the solution required some registry manipulation. Apparantly there are other unforseen symptoms (Moral of the story: be careful what codecs you install from the Internet. :P)

Both machines are using built-in (and therefore fairly cheap and low quality) sound cards, if that helps.

Here's The Big List of (non-graphics) Freeware Programs:
http://americangirlscouts.org/bbc.com/yabb/index.php?topic=14371.0
I don't know why it's not a sticky topic.

I highly recommend dbpoweramp, since it has a plugin feature to support just about every encoder/decoder.  It's not free though, sadly.  For free, you might get the fully functional demo of Goldwave since that will let you convert between several formats.

OK, done a bit of revision based on file size and audio type! Here's a link to the much smaller new file:

http://files.filefront.com/Doctor_Whoace/;5541156;;/fileinfo.html

I've revised the original post so it also features this link.

Enjoy! and as always, let me know what you think. I've drawn up a list of things I'd like to do with this existing segment, among them are inserting at least one new puzzle, making the escape from the cell more difficult and re-animating the Doctor's talking animation.

I'm planning and sketching both the resolution of this episode and the first alien planet to be featured in the next episode. I doubt there'll be anything substantial for at least a couple of weeks though, so in the meantime keep letting me know what you think of the demo!

I didn't play very far into this, but I really enjoyed what I saw. I was having my doubts about the plot from the descriptions you posted, but after playing it, I did like it. The animations are quite well done, and I thought you did a pretty good job of capturing the personality of the Doctor.

I would have to agree with ProgZmax about the Doctor's talk animation. It's a little too much. But a minor comment so far.

Nice job!

I hear you, but I don't have winzip on my new PC and now they charge for it, apparently. Otherwise it'd be a good old fashioned .zip file.

Re the talk animation, it now alternates between three different talk animations, so it won't be the same one over and over in the final version.

Hi Duckbutcher,

I recommend using winrar.

It'a demo that can be run during 40 days but after 40 days you get a nag screen but still runs without limit regardless.

You can also compress as a zip file which is much better then winzip.

We can also decompress ace file with winrar.

I hope this help.

Or, much better 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org), it can compress to ZIP and it's free.

Thanks for the help and comments, everyone. When the game is finally up and running, it will be a zip file!

I've addressed some of the issues with the demo - the Doctor now has three talking animations for a bit of variety, the puzzles aren't so easy, and I'm working on cutting down some of the dialogue.

I'm not sure if there will be another demo incorporating these changes before the full game is ready, but watch this space.

In the meantime, here's a new screenshot.

Some of those characters look like Indiana Jones and his partner from "Indiana Jones:The Fate Of Atlantis"

I played through the Demo, and I must say I loved it.

You got the stlye of dialogue for Tom Baker's Doctor spot on,

I enjoyed the cliff hanger at the end, though can I say it would be nice if you hadn't posted a screenshot of the Dalek, kind of ruined the surprise I had a feeling I knew what was going to happen from the start of the game.

Have you thought of doing it in an episodic format? I loved how it played out like an actual episode especially time wise as well as the great cliff hanger, it was just like sitting down to watch Doctor Who at 6 'o' clock in the evening.

It would be cool if this wasn't the 'DEMO' but the first episode, and the second episode would be a continuation of the first, but wouldn't require me to play through the first episode...

Anywho, thats my two cents, I loved it, can't wait for the next part.

BTW, one of the German scientists looks suspicously like Guybrush from Monkey Island 2...and you did say you used some Lucasarts material, will you be removing that in the future?

Cheers for the FB guys.

The Lucasarts stuff at the moment is staying, because I'm not really an artist - I can draw and animate backgrouds and machinery, but people always come out wrong - I can add the flourishes to an existing model, but can't really do one from scratch. For major characters I'll always attempt to disguise the paintovers as much as possible. The Guybrush paintover you mentioned only appears in one scene, and to be fair, he was the most obvious paintover.

There are three paintover backgrounds in the demo, out of about 13 screens. This is because I quickly realised that I was proficient enough to rattle up backgrounds from scratch myself. So there will be no more paintover backgrounds, at least.

Incidentally, if anyone wants to help me with character design, get in touch. You could rustle up some re-done sprite sheets for existing characters from the demo or potential characters from later on in the game and I could include them in the final game.

I have to say I actually found the Guybrush repaint sprite nostalgic and charming, after a fact. Kind of like a favorite actor who turns up in a new role. ;) Anyway, you've stated right out in front that you were borrowing art so I, personally, don't have a problem with it. What you may lack in drawing characters from scratch you've more than compensated for with witty dialog, solid background art and engaging story.

In short, don't be so hard on Duckbutcher. ;)

Duckbutcher, I've gotta say, really well done. You've captured the essence of the early 4th Doctor to such a point I can almost hear Tom Bakers distinctive voice saying your dialog.

Being a HUGE Dr Who fan I'm always sceptical about such things as fan based games, novels, stories etc, because I believe that 9 times out of 10 the fans manage to get it too bogged down in the backstory instead of exploring strange new worlds (to steal a quote from Star Trek). You've avoided that. Well done.

I can't wait to play the full game.

Again, great job.

Hey man, I've joined the forum just to tell you how great your game is!

I've downloaded it and played it, and its blooming brilliant! It feels like playing a Doctor Who game Lucasarts has made! :-p

I wish I got there fair... i did do some preproduction in the style of "Toonstruck" and had planned to record my own Doctor on video and create a walkcycle/whatever cycle for a photo-realistic game.

But I have to say that my efforts wouldn't be as good as your brilliant demo here. I loved every minute of it!

Dialogue while alittle too long really set the story. I love Tom's dialogue.

Characters were brilliant, except the Guybrush-rip I couldn't tell where they had come from.

Backgrounds, brilliant, you said you were no good, but they are brilliant mate.

Plot, I wasn't expecting the dalek to be honest, despite the screenshots, i wasn't expecting them at all - i thought maybe its another episode screenshot.

I can't wait to see the full episode and the next episode, it would be a brilliant set of games, its just a shame the BBC never got into this idea, instead they realised that awful "Destiny of the Doctors" game.

Keep up the good work, mate.

Thanks,
davidnagel

The original 3d Doctor Who Adventure Game was created by a chap called Scarecrow (didn't get his real name)

The site went down years ago, but there was a demo released of the game, featuring a 3d Tom Baker Doctor in 3d environments, outside the TARDIS was some 2d aliens.

So, Geoffkhan, if you're interested, I do have this original demo released. I do not know how I stand on redistribution, or even if I'm allowed! I'd rather see if Scarecrow reads this and tells me otherwise! But I think the chap passed away awhile ago - i don't know so don't hold me to it.

Just a quick update guys - I'm going to Greece for a couple of weeks for a well earned holiday, so things'll be a bit quiet on the Who front for a bit. In the meantime, here are two new screens.

Progress wise, I've finished the Chateau's story and I've got about 80% of the rooms in place for the first of the game's alien worlds. The story's ready and waiting to be put in place, and,  in an antidote to the relative ease of the demo, I have one or two extremely nasty puzzles lined up. See you soon!

I signed up to the forum just to congratulate you on a great project and I hope it gets completed. You have the dialogue down to a tee Dont go and post too many screenshots though might dampen the surprise!!!

A minor gripe is that I thought that some of the graphics could do with a little polish just to make them a bit sharper, and a bit more texture, such as the outside walls of the chateaux, and the doctor who logo at the beginning. Apart from that I thought it was faultess and I can wait!

Well, I'm back from holiday and am tucking into some more backgrounds tonight.

davidnagel : That sounds great. Let me know when your site is up and running and I'll have a look at some of your stuff. Since I'm not making any money from this thing, and we've never had a decent Who game (I'm not being big headed - I'm just going off the generally positive feedback I've had!), it'd be nice for as many people as possible to be able to get hold of this. Any exposure is good exposure!

Re comments from other posters - I don't like the logo either! The one in the final game will look better. It might even be one of my own design, I'm not sure yet. I used that one simply because it was there and I needed the title sequence done for the demo.

And yes, looking back over this thread, I have posted rather a lot of screens. Rest assured they'll be rationed from now on.

Anyhow, progress continues steadily. I still don't have any idea of a release date - I'm not even halfway through the story at the moment.

I have considered perhaps releasing the game 'episodically' as suggested by some posters. What do people think? Would it work that way or would you rather wait for the complete game?

Some truely brilliant script, lovely cut scenes and a great feel. But unfortunatly let down for me by the inconsistancy of the art. I fell in love with your demo's intro but when it came to display the inside of the tardis i was somewhat dissapointed. There was a lovely animation of the pair falling over when the tardis was knocked off course but it all seems a little to scatty.

The outside of the nazi castle was lovely (all be it with a few oddly placed pixels) but the inside room seemed like it needed some more work and as did the room that followed.

And when guybrush Threepwood came onto the screen dressed in a white coat i was a little worried, maybe he was there to meet Indy and Sophia ;)

Seriously pal you've got a brilliant looking game here which seems to be going like a steam train, and you (or whoever is responsible) is obviously very talented at script writing. But i really feel that this game could benifit from a more consistant style, the random changes in art really help loose the feel that the rooms link.

I hope im not being too harsh, and i also hope you can take my points into consideration. Ether way, i'll still play the finished game for sure :)

As I've stated again and again, I'm not really an artist. I started this thread by asking for help with art. None was forthcoming, so I decided to give it a shot myself. I do tend to rattle backgrounds out and not agonise over perfection and details - not because I'm lazy, but because it would be a pointless exercise. I'm doing this for fun, not profit. I am, admittedly, improving as the game progresses, so maybe once the game is finished, I will re-do some of the clunkier backgrounds and ditch the Guybrush paintover which seems to have enraged one or two people so much. In the meantime, I trust you'll agree that what I am producing is at least adequate. That's all I can do and that's really all it needs to be. So you're stuck with my inconsistent, scatty art, I'm afraid. Sorry!

If someone was enraged with your artwork, tell them "Screw you!" and ask them to make something better for you. After all, your making a game for US, in YOUR SPARE TIME, for FREE. Do what YOU NEED to do and not worry about 1 or 2 people that aggravate you. Actually, I should learn to take my own advice. It just gets on my nerves when I see people being enraged for something they cant do better in.

Keep up the outstanding work!!!!!

EDIT: Sorry, maybe you shouldn't say "screw you". But something to make them understand that they shouldn't tell you negative things or be enraged toward you...
Title: Re: DOCTOR WHO - DEMO AVAILABLE!

I'm all for the episodic format of release,

- It would make each segment of the game's cliff hanger ending more intense.
- It gives it the feel of the actual show.
- Makes it easier to work on, because your working on small sections not the entire epic at once.
- Means your more likely to finish, and even if you don't you will still have a bunch of self contained episodes to show for yourself, instead of a half playable epic.

Anywho, keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to it no matter how you do it.
Title: Re: DOCTOR WHO - DEMO AVAILABLE!

Whoops - I purged my photobucket album like an idiot, and consequently a lot of the screenshots have disappeared from this thread. Sorry about that guys! But hey, I guess it's better this way - not as many spoilerific screens.

Anyhew, progress continues slowly. I'll soon be moving on to character designs for the second part of the game. May post some sprites here for people to look at - and to guess who they're paintovers of ;)...

I'm still debating whether to release the game episodically. I can understand the argument for an episodic release, but here are my thoughts:

Personally, I'd rather play the whole thing in one go - I hate waiting a week for cliffhanger resolutions. I'm really into Lost at the moment, but don't watch it on TV...I use...ahem..other means...and sometimes sit and watch up to five episodes in a row. I think the game will be more satisfying if the player can choose whether or not to take a break at the close of an episode. Bear in mind, that if I did choose to release the game episodically, there would be a wait of at least three months between episodes - probably longer.  And also, it does seem unlikely that episodes will be of an equal length - kind of like the 'parts' of Monkey Island 1 - part one was far and away the longest part, part two you could do in ten minutes etc.

Really, I split it into episodes as primarily as a way of pacing the story and breaking the game into manageable chunks that I am able to work on seperately, and secondly as a nostalgia thing - trying to evoke the feel of the show (I'm even doing a reprise of the last 30 seconds or so of episode 1 after the titles of episode 2).

Anyone think I should have the 1970s BBC1 logo and a continuity announcer at the beginning?

Just kidding....

Anyhow, let me know your thoughts.

Perhaps you could wait till the whole game is finished and then start releasing each part weekly or however frequently (perhaps fortnightly or monthly might be better for a game?). That way people could either go along with the experience and enjoy the cliffhangers or just wait till they've all been released and play them in one chunk.

Glad to see a Doctor Who game. A minor note about the TARDIS screen shot, the circular depressions are aranged in a honeycomb pattern so every other vertical row should be shifted down by about  half a repetition.  As for having Guybrush in the game, if you decide to keep him make him a good guy, not a nazi! He could be one of the brigidare's soldiers.

Quick update and a bit of blurb for the second part here guys - cheers!

Following the leads they aquired in France, The Doctor and Sarah travel to the planet Tethis in the year 4000, landing on a mountain which has a starship crashed halfway up it. The survivors of this crash have set up a makeshift colony at the foot of the mountain. They've been stranded here for nearly twenty years. A perimiter wall protects the villagers from strange creatures marauding outside the colony. But just who is protecting whom - and from what? Enlisting the help of one or two villagers, our heroes resolve to get to the bottom of the mystery. Why were the survivors never rescued? What is the secret of Excalibur's Glory? What purpose does the mysterious Beacon serve? And is the Captain all that he seems to be?

Here's a screen from the second part of the game:

Progress wise, it would be nice to have something ready by Christmas. But I can't promise anything!

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates recently. Christmas rush had contributed to me not doing much work on the game these last two weeks or so. Hopefully will get back into it after Christmas.

Progress wise, I recently started putting characters and puzzles into the completed environment of the second part of the game and- then I backtracked a little and re-did some of the TARDIS interior graphics - they're now a little less clunky. I did this because there will be a sort of 'bridging' sequence set in the TARDIS before the time travellers land on the new planet - one or two puzzles and a bit of exploration.  Here's a comparison between the old console room and the new one.

Just a suggestion, not that I don't appreciate what you're doing, I've been waiting for a proper DW adventure game forever... but your character art could use some touch-up... Tom Baker looks pretty good, but Sarah Jane doesn't really look like Sarah Jane...

Hi guys, quick update and a new screenie...this one's for the fans!

I've been bogged down in the TARDIS since Christmas. There's twice as many explorable rooms now than I originally intended. I just kept adding new locations. Some familiar ones are the wardrobe (seen above), the Cloister Room and the swimming pool. A pivotal TARDIS location will be the library, which I've nicknamed the 'Exposition Room' as it deals with much of the game's story - this will save me giving too much dialogue to my characters, one of the main criticisms of the original demo. The player will be able to pop into the library and research any aspect of the game which requires explaining - it's all optional, but players who do their homework in the library can expect an easier ride in the game.

But anyway, I'm expecting to produce a new demo sometime in the next two months. This demo will be about 1/3rd of the full game and should take the player from the start of the game up to the end of episode 2. Unfortunately you won't be able to use any saves you kept over from part one as I've changed some stuff. I'm aiming to get the new demo out by the end of March, but should know well in advance whether or not I'm going to meet that target, so watch this space for further news.

Everything's OK here, thanks! Progressing nicely.

Still on target for a new demo to be released at the end of March.

I've just finished writing a bit of exposition - to misquote a great author "The tale is growing in the telling".

I've also put in a dangerous situation that could result in the Doctor's death! I wasn't going to put in any deaths at first, but thought it might be nice to drop one in. Don't worry, it'll only happen as the result of gross stupidity on the part of the player...

I've also laid the groundwork for an Easter Egg which probably won't see light of day until the full game.

In the meantime, here's a screenie - Tom Baker never liked being caught in the pub for fear it would lead his young fans astray....the Doctor isn't quite as concerned!:

Is that a model of the enterprise that guy on the floor has?

Also does Sarah Jane take part much at all? I know you said she'd be there, but I'd like to see her have a bigger role.  Maybe switching between the Doctor and SJ at some point if they're not actually in the same scenes together..

Cheers for the offer. I should really wait until it's finished before thinking about such things however. I'll let you know. Thanks again!

Will the robot dog, K9 be in the game also?

Nope!

A common misconception brought about by the recent appearance of Sarah with K9 in the series is that they both travelled in the TARDIS at the same time...they didn't!

The Doctor delivered K9 to Sarah AFTER she'd left the TARDIS crew....K9 in fact first travelled with the Doctor and Leela and later the Doctor and Romana.

Extreme geek mode off...
Title: Re: DOCTOR WHO - DEMO AVAILABLE!
Post by: on Sat 10/03/2007 06:24:54
Just to clarify the K9 question....

There was actually four different K9s...

K9 mark 1 was the first K9 that the Doctor and companion Leela picked up in the year 5000 during the serial "The Invisible Enemy" in 1977.  This was a year after Sarah Jane left the Doctor...

K9 mark 2 was the second version of K9 that the doctor built after mark 1 stayed with Leela on Gallifrey in "The Invasion of Time" in 1978.  Mark 2 went on to travel with the Doctor and Romana.  This version stays with the Doctor and Romana until 1981.

K9 mark 3 was built by the Doctor specifically for Sarah Jane in the spinoff "K9 and Company" (that lasted only the 1 pilot episode).  This version apparently stays with Sarah and we see it all junked up in the trunk of Sarah Jane's car in the 2006 episode "School Reunion".  Mark 3 was destroyed at the end of the episode.

K9 mark 4 was left for Sarah by the Doctor at the end of "School Reunion".  We saw him briefly in the pilot episode of the spinoff "Sarah Jane Adventures".

And then of course there is the K9 from K9 Adventures, not sure if its one of the 4 from Doctor Who, or another model again.

Certainly looks different from the others.

Aww someone else offering a site hosting... ah well. hopefully your new offer will be better than the crap I put up!

K9 in School Reunion would be the K9 & Company K9 we saw, and the new K9 from end of SR is the one we see in Sarah Jane Adventures (Sarah explains that the events of meeting Doctor happened a few years ago)

Banished to page 3! No! Oh wait, back to page 1 again - yay!

Duckbutcher, how are you coming along with this?

I just completed the first one and it great.

So, another demo coming?

When the full version will available?
It might be best adding progress report as % on original post.

Hi, yes, once the second demo is up and running, I'll completely re-do the opening post with a new blurb, progress report and set of screens. The full game? I honestly wouldn't like to guess. I'm working on it consistently though, so it's something that WILL be finished some day. Just not sure when!

Hi guys....

The new demo is ALMOST done...my estimate of an end of March release date has been infiltrated by a house move and a couple of birthdays. So it's going to be probably another week before I can deliver the goods.

The demo is technically complete - at the moment I'm playtesting and scoring the game. When this is sorted I'll post the new demo and do a complete re-vamp of the opening thread with a new set of screens, description etc...

Stay tuned!

Yes, the demo is fantastic, it's exactly like watching a Doctor Who episode.

And Christopher Eccleston is a lot better than Tennant, why did he have to leave the show? Ever since Tennant came along, the show's not fun anymore... For one thing, almost every episode takes place in modern-day London, and Tennant can't seem to look funny, or serious, he just looks like a clown IMHO.

Anyway, can't wait for the new demo.

I think the whole new series looks clownish and silly. I much preferred Torchwood to be honest (for modern sci-fi), because of the more adult themes. And the fact it has a reason to be grounded on earth. It actually made you think too.

On the subject of the demo, I really like how the dialogue and visual humour is spot on. It isn't always just silly, it is witty and sharp. And it has managed to fit perfectly into the adventure game genre, very well done indeed! :D

Sorry...I hate Torchwood with a passion, but won't get into a rant about it's so called adult themes and down to Earth grittiness. As if it has any. The only thing I'll say is you accuse the new series of silliness...and yet you like Torchwood?  ???

Well the new demo's here, at last. Here's a link -

<a href="http://files.filefront.com/7156636" title="Doctor_Who_Demo_2.zip">Doctor_Who_Demo_2.zip</a>

There's alaso a big update in the
first post. Please give it a go!

ISSUES I AM AWARE OF:

1.One of the supporting characters later in the game doesn't have a walkcycle and
just shuffles off stage right. I'm on it.

2.The backgrounds early in the game are a bit inconsistent - I'm in the process of
re-drawing a lot of my first attempts at background drawing (some of which are about a year old now!), this is an ongoing thing, so the art will be more consistent in
the finished version.

3.A couple of dialogues are little more than placeholders and will be more elaborate
in the finished version - I'm thinking specifically of the Chef and the Kid in the Pub.

4.I'm not really happy with the library computer. Suggestions welcome.

5.I will add a reprise and a version of the title sequence to the start of episode 2 -
but I'm planning on re-doing the title sequence from scratch so thought I'd leave it
out for now.

how do I get out of the room with the pencil and paper? In the previous demo the pencil would fit in the keyhole. Now the Doctor says it's too thick. So thin it out or find something else? Either way I can't figure it out.

1) While entering in big chief office I am being talked to but the chief isn't in.
2) While going through the doorway with chief in hallway, I cannot go through except through stairs.

While being in main lobby, entering the door right next to chief same thing is happenning as specifief in (2)

3) While looking as same thing inside of ship as I did in part 1, the following script error shows up:

in global script (line 353)

Well, this doesn't make much sense to me, sorry! Do you mean you were somehow able to get into the Dalek ship in part Two? Becaause this should be impossible. If anyone else can do this please let me know and I'll get it fixed. I just can't tell how this is possible.

I really like the new demo, love the additions to part one,

Still I have some niggling problems...

The Doctor still moves around alot when he speaks...
In the first scene where you land in France, the Doctor can walk through the door to the chateua without opening it, it doesn't go to the next screen he just disappears through the door till you get him to walk back out, looks silly.

Also with the stairs (just across from the main door to the chateua) you can get the Doctor to walk up them without t changing screens which is also annoying.

The Doctor doesn't seem to have a crawling animation which would make the vent scene look better.

And the game crashed when I went into the attic (after Sarah and Piere had entered), I clicked to walk out (while the Doctor was standing near the door), he dissapeared and reappeared on the other side of the room and began walking towards the door, then he got to the door and the game crashed.

But apart from that, its fabulous.

Just an idea, once you've completed a episode I think you should be able to select it from the main screen, so that if I wanted to play episode 2 again, I wouldn't have to play episoe one. Just an idea

Thanks for the game, God Bless

Yes, I'd forgotten about that one. This scene was made when I was still learning AGS (in fact it was my first room!) so one or two strange things are possible here. A similar thing will happen if the player tries to click on the flag. I'll get it sorted.

Quote from: Michael_TSM on Sun 08/04/2007 06:18:24Also with the stairs (just across from the main door to the chateua) you can get the Doctor to walk up them without t changing screens which is also annoying.

But if you click on the hotspot, you have no trouble going to the next screen, right?

He does have a crawling animation, it's just not very good! Once again, it'll be sorted in the final version.

Yipes. I have no idea why that would happen. I've just fired up the game and am trying to get it to crash like that, but nothing as yet. Has anyone else had this problem? What exactly were the circumstances leading up to it?

Quote from: Michael_TSM on Sun 08/04/2007 06:18:24But apart from that, its fabulous.

When do Piere and Sarah meet you in the attic? Is it after they did in the first demo, because I've been up there but they aren't there? :S

All the puzzles have also got a lot longer, when they were pretty much perfect in the first demo.

Hahaha, I mean he sticks his hands in his pockets and then pulls them out constantly while he talks, a nervous twitch perhaps...

As for the crash, I can't seem to make it happen again...so, don't worry about it, if it happens again I'll post the error box, (which I failed to do this time)...

Also, I just played through the telephone conversation again, that is one of the best written segments I've played, in any Adventure game, the dialogue in your game may be long, but incredible funny and well worth it and the new scene with the Robot head in the cuboard is very funny! It reminded me of Murray from MI3.

Yes! The player shouldn't be able to get back into the hall after a certain point in the game.  I'm in the process of adressing this and other issues brought to my attention through this thread. In a day or two I'll upload another version of the demo, with these issues sorted.

Right, I've just done a quick re-compile. I'll have a thorough look at the demo after the bank Holiday, but in the meantime I've fixed:

The player now shouldn't be able to get into the main hall after a certain point, The hotspot spelling mistake has been  corrected, the Technical manual glitch should now be sorted, the flag issue on the outside of the chateau is done too...

I've also put in a couple of "excuses" why the Doctor won't use the Sonic on one or two doors...not to mention a bit of blurb on the readme which includes saving instructions etc...

Thigs I haven't addressed - floating GUI in TARDIS library. Not sure how to solve this one and as it's not particularly impeding to gameplay I'm going to leave it for now.

Attic crash - I have no idea how this is happenning. I managed to get it to happen once after trying about fifty times, so it does seem quite rare. Unfortunately until I know why it's happening there is no way I can stop it. I'll continue to look into it.

The opening post has been revised to include the new link.

I'm sure this sort of revision will be an ongoing process, so let me know if you find any more bugs guys!

I'm running the demo via the Linux AGS interpreter, so I'll let you know if I run into any issues with that.

By the way, Duckbutcher, updating OG on the game's progress?

Do you also know you can keep on asking Sarah about how to get past the gun once you've got past it?

Good.

So far, it seems to be working just fine with the Linux interpreter. I've just played it through to completion without any issues.

Holly moly... that's quite amazing. I mean... you're able to actually capture what's so good about the show, and put it into a game! I just finished the second part, purely awesome. Good work, and keep it up!

Oh, and 4 seems like not enough to me... oh well :)

In the room with the lasers in part 2. Sarah is told to stay by the door, however after leaving and entering again she is just following me around as normal in the room.

Wonderful, more bugs. I should open a flea circus.

Where and when does this occur?

And Markbilly, it's mainly a bug fix but there is a new crawling animataion for the Doctor as well as an alternate way for the player to gather information relevant to the glyph puzzle.

Seeing those Five Doctors style lasers ..... It occurs to me that the plots of a lot of old Doctor Who stories are just like adventure games. Consider Pyramids of Mars for example. Even ends with sliding puzzle and glyph puzzle type padding.

I'd just like to chime in with yet another gushing post about how wonderfully awesomely great this game is.  Fantastic work, Duckbutcher!

It's really remarkable how perfectly you've got the characters of the Doctor and Sarah.  It's pretty impossible to not hear Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen's voices in your head when reading their lines.  And the prank calls are absolute genius.

One bug, though, with a slight spoiler:
Spoiler
you can keep getting more strings from the ball of string in the village.

Thank you so much for this!  I look forward to the finished game.

Hi, just a quick note to let people know how I'm getting on...

First of all, a massive thank you to everyone who played and enjoyed the game. The sort of compliments I've been getting make the whole thing worthwhile. Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed it, and I hope I can live up to your expectations for the full game.

I'm also happy that people have been very honest in telling me where I've gone wrong too. Thanks to all who've been sending me bug reports - this will all contribute to the game being better in the 'final cut'.

ALTHOUGH, because the game has one or two bugs as it stands, I've had one or two people reporting bugs that aren't there simply because they can't solve a particular puzzle. So let me clarify. NONE OF THE BUGS STOP A PUZZLE FROM BEING COMPLETED! The most serious one involves you being able to get back into the hallway after the Dalek has been released (this should be impossible). None of them prevent the game from being completed.

I realise the Rapidshare version of the game is corrupt, and would re-upload the bug-free demo if I hadn't lost the original file! I will do a re-compile at some point, but the game is 'mid surgery' at the moment as I'm constructing part three.

I'll be keeping the progress quiter than I have in the past, but will trickle out a new screenshot soon.

Release date? I don't like to guess. But It'll get done.

Thanks again everyone!

Edit: Oh, one last thing...I need a subtitle for the game. You know, like "Curse Of The" whatever, "Terror Of The" something ot other, a proper Doctor Who-ey title like that. Can't settle on one I like.

Any ideas, people?

How about Dawn of the Daleks? (Shameless plug. Sorry.)

A quick glance over my DVD collection would suggest that whatever it is, it has to begin with 'The'. Approximately 80% of the Doctor Who episodes began with this triumphant declaration of the English language.
The Benefactor?

Either that, or fall back on the good old 'something' of the 'something else.' What these two things are, doesn't really matter, as long as they're there...
I've just had a great idea for a Dr Who title generator...

The Dance of the Hillbillies.
The Rent of the Accomodation.
The Price of the Fish.
The Changing of the Topic.
The Losing of the Keys.
The The of the The.

What about 'Curse of the Cybermen'?
Perhaps 'Torchwood' could be involved in the title somehow.

EDIT: After watching Doctor Who recently, 'the master' could also be involved.

All things being equal it does seem like "The Benefactor" might be the best choice from what we've seen from the first two parts. I figured I come up with a few other suggestions. I've admittedly never been overly fond of the sort of titles that generally get picked for Doctor Who episodes (the classic ones, anyway) because they tend to be a little too straightforward. So anyway, here's a few other suggestions for candidates:

Time Snare
The Mandalox Procedure
The Final Weapon
Four Corners
The Benefactor's Plan
Chasing Armageddon

Time Snare
The Mandalox Procedure
The Final Weapon
Four Corners
The Benefactor's Plan
Chasing Armageddon

Like these a lot, thanks for the suggestions! Good Who-ish titles. I've been sort of categorising them!

Time Snare and Four Corners sound very Cartmel/McCoy, The Final Weapon and The Benefactor's Plan sound very 60s / Hartnell, Chasing Armageddon sounds like a Virgin NA title, The Mandalox Procedure sounds sort of like Bidmead (although I guess it would have to be just 'Mandalox' to qualify for that!)...

Wow, got a bit supergeek witht the references there...

Thanks a lot, am seriously considering one or two of these!
Title: Re: DOCTOR WHO New Demo & Website!

You're looking for a Baker type title, they tended to be quite simple. If you want a serial-esque title, I reckon something along the lines of 'Excalibur's Glory'. Simple and does what it says on the tin. What else... 'The Final Solution'?

Also, I know it's probably for reasons of time and not wanting to go through the tedium of doing a new sprite... but when the doc gets electrocuted, shouldn't he regenerate in his Davison persona?  ;D

Here are two new screens,  8th July....

These pics show the Kuiper Space Station, a key location for the second and third parts of the game. The player will, for the most part, be able to travel to and from this location, the crashed ore carrier and a third location I'm keeping under wraps for now.

I've tried to make the station a bustling hub of activity - billboards flash, ships pass outside the windows and people wander around and talk amongst themselves. One problem I found with earlier backgrounds is how static they can sometimes look, so I've tried to put a bit of animation into every one of the station's backgrounds.

Star Trek fans may spot a couple of references in these screens - the Gorn is a placeholder from one of my (unreleased) other games and will be replaced with a proper character eventually, though I'm tempted to keep the Reliant as it looks so good drifting across the screen!

That'll be me, then!

Wow! I came across this project whilst reading Mr Butchers' Series 4 speculative plot synopsis list  (http://www.gallifreyone.com/forum/showthread.php39444) on  Outpost Gallifrey.  (http://www.gallifreyone.com/index.php) and I'm just blown away. You've done it, Mr Butcher. You've made the game I always wanted to make but never found the time to do it.

As Mr Nagel says, I released a demo - literally two rooms - made in AGAST many moons ago (and feel free to distribute as you wish Mr Nagel)  before discovering Dark Basic (http://darkbasic.thegamecreators.com/) and starting over in 3D. I made a couple of models (Police Box, TARDIS control room, Dalek Tom Baker and a Cyberman) and it just sort of sat there not being made for a very long time before I conceded the fact that I'd bitten off so much I couldn't even fit it in my mouth, never mind chew it.

All that remains of my feeble effort now is a render of the console room on my Deviant Art gallery (http://scarecrovv.deviantart.com/).

All the best with your game, DuckButcher. I absolutely love it.

Scarecrow

PS - if you're not going to seperate each episode into an individual game then can you please - for the love of god - include a save/load option!!!?

And there IS a Save/Load feature! Press F5. I'm not sure I put this in the 'Readme' to be honest, so sorry about that!

The downloadable game as it stands is still a 'Work in progress' and has a few bugs, these will be all ironed out by the final release date...whenever that is...but glad you liked it!

On the contrary, the artwork in your game is great - especially in the second episode.
I've just completed the second episode and I have to say, whilst mine might have looked pretty, it wouldn't have been as entertaining or challenging as yours. I may be an artist but I'm no game designer! :)

I love the way you've handled the TARDIS interior too. Being able to jump from one room to another is much better than having to navigate a maze of corridors in realtime. Nice one.
I especially like the library. The fact that you can go up to the balcony is a nice touch.

...and the Dark Knight returns really is Frank Miller's finest hour :)

Hi everyone, just a quick note and a cry for help really...Originally, when I began this project, it was a bit of fun I was doing casually in my spare time. Now however, I've decided it would be nice if I could make it as good as I possibly can. So with that in mind, I've been re-doing some of the more clunky aspects of the game - certain animations and backgrounds for example have been updated and in some cases completely replaced.

HOWEVER...I'm NOT a professional by any stretch of the imagination and there are still a lot of things I can't get my head - or mouse - around. One of these is the TARDIS spinning in space. If ANYONE can work some wonders with this, I'd be very grateful and you'd recieve a full credit. Remember it has to look good in 300X200 resolution! The effect I'm after is the one you'll all be familiar with from the show - the TARDIS spinning as if hanging from a string at its light. There is a TARDIS animation in the game, but I'm really not happy with it so any help would be appreciated. PM me if interested!

Here's the image of the landed TARDIS for reference. It would be nice if the TARDIS in flight matched this one as well as possible.

Edit - the TARDIS door should be shut, sorry about that...

I've been looking for a Doctor Who adventure game for so long!  I was even considering making one myself, except I can't draw to save my life.  Thank god that I don't have to now, your game is brilliant!

There are a couple of spelling mistakes (I think I actually spotted 3 overall, and they seem more like accidental typos than lack of dictionary usage) but it doesn't subtract from the game at all.  I'm liking the whole serialised aspect of it all.  The whole episode and cliff-hanger thing is really well done.

The little jokes were very good too, especially the outfits in the wardrobe.  The description of the leather jacket is genius :)

Oh, and kudos for mentioning my little hometown and its famous roundabouts, it always surprises me when it gets a mention, even though the Basingstoke roundabout seemed to be extraordinarily famous amongst British TV shows in the 80's.

Can't wait for episode 3!

It should be done by the end of the day. Once it's finished, I'l upload it for you.
This is a little taster of what the TARDIS will look like.

I've played the first two episodes, and I was thoroughly impressed, and I'm definetly hooked. I see you've progressed a bit since then, so I definetly can't wait for the full release. Looks like spring 2008 is going to be littered not only with major music releases, but also with major game releases. The best of luck to ya, Duckbutcher, you are definetly brilliant in my book for making this game, you've definetly got my vote in the AGS Awards :D. Steam on, by all means!

Yup, this is definitely one of the more promising things I've seen around lately!

Oh wow. Did you go back and redo some of those backgrounds? They are, in a word, fantastic! :)

Also, I'm honored I could contribute to the project in some small way.

Likewise. Sorry you haven't heard from me in months, I've been out the country, and without the wonders of the internet.

The progress you've made in the few months I've been away is absolutely staggering. I've PAID up to £30 for games that look worse than this.

If you're still in need of the updated daleks, let me know, and I'll dig them out for you, but by the looks of things, you're pretty much well set. My time is still open to any proof-reading/testing you need doing, so let me know if you need anything.

I'd just like to say that I've played through most of the first episode now and I'm absolutely blown away. I cannot wait for the final game. Great work, Duckbutcher!

Brilliant game, Duckbutcher, I'm hooked! ;D

I didn't really notice any major bugs while playing- except one.

When you're in the glyph corridor in the ship, if you open a letter, when you put it away, you're stuck in the wall at the far left of the hallway. However, if you open the letter and put it away once more, you're back where you started. O_o

I can't wait for March!

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

Just a quick update about the site, I have removed the old Demo1 (Episode One) because it wasn't required since it was superceded by Demo2 (Episode One and Episode Two) which, lets hope, is superceded again by the complete game.

I wonder, duckbutcher, will there be a musicless version of the game should people not want to download big ZIP files? For example, Demo2 is 40mb in size...

~David.

Hmm, I'll keep it in mind. I honestly hadn't thought about the potential file size of the finished game, but it's likely to be huge. Is there any way to compress the music files so they don't take up much space? Hey, I'm a bit behind when it comes to technology.

I'm not going to make that March deadline, by the way. Probably. Sorry guys. I will stress that work on the game is ongoing, and hopefully it WILL be worth the wait when the full game finally materializes with that familiar wheezing-groaning sound...

In the meantine, there are now TWO (count 'em) other Doctor Who games in the works on this very board! So one of us should have something out in the next few months at least...

Thanks for the updates Duck. I had noticed it was awfully quiet here, did wonder if another of my posts killed this thread! Oh dear!

Shame about the no March deadline - do you think you'll beat the new series to airing? ;)

I noticed that we are past the posted ETA. Yesterday I was about to start playing the demo but decided to wait for the full thing. Has been a new ETA decided yet?

BTW, from the little I saw in the demo it looks like a great game, congrats

Apparently he's lost his interest in Doctor Who, according to a post he made on the doctorwhoforum.com boards.  :'(

I hope he decides to finish this project anyway, since it's an amazing effort, and has gone beyond anything I've seen anyone else do. Here's hoping, which is all I can do at this point.

Duckbutcher, please give us at least a sign? That way we're not left hanging?

I read that post myself - he made it after The Unicorn and the Wasp went to air.

Seeing as Gareth Roberts is thus responsible for the demise of the project, I think it is only fair that he should be forced to complete it! ;)

I'm still surprised that people seem so enthusiastic about Time Snare.

It's on hold. That's as specific as I can be. I've been toying with AGS, and a while back I started another, completely original adventure. As I'm sure you know, a new project can take all one's time and enthusiasm. And yes, based on recent events, I have found my interest in the world of the Doctor waning. I apologise, but I have learned that I shouldn't have made a song and dance about the game until it was nearly finished, hence my new project will be kept firmly under wraps until I'm sure it will see light of day.

I'm really proud of the game though, and there's a lot I did to it since the demo. I re-did a bunch of backgrounds, added more animations, as well as advancing the story and locations by a hefty chunk. Perhaps, if I do one day decide that the project is firmly in the ground, I'll release the incomplete version so people can see where it may have gone. I don't feel I could release it to a third party to finish.

But like I said, on hold. I'd love to go back and finish it one day, and to be honest, I think I will. I just don't have the inspiration right now.

I hope I don't get flamed, as I really appreciate the interest and support everyone on the AGS board has given me. Thanks a lot guys, and I'm sorry to disappoint you.

Mods, I guess it's time to lock the thread. I'll let you know if I ever want it re-opened.

Pete
