Post by: buloght on Tue 25/07/2006 22:18:07
Help Knight and Squire do stuff.

Very short game.

Edit: Forgot to say, I made a lame game beginning of year for a coding competition, this is the remake of it. I don't know if this one is better or lamer, but eitherway here it is.

Yay, that was a fun five minutes. Lovely graphics, characters inspired by discworld at all?
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: MashPotato on Wed 26/07/2006 02:47:25
An enjoyable game! ^_^
Spoiler
I liked how the knight refused to even bend over and pick up that rock, and made his squire do it instead... and then made his squire carry the princess... what a jerk!
[close]
The graphics and music were both charming and fit the game very well.  A great job all around--and Buloght, no it is not at all "lame" ^_^

Throughly enjoyable. Somehow, I kept being reminded of Gobliiins - the graphic style, the rooms' layout, the interface... is that intentional?
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens on Wed 26/07/2006 10:06:32
Very nice work on the backgrounds, Buloght.  The low saturation and color selection remind me of a lot of old Amiga games.  This is a good thing!
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: Nikolas on Wed 26/07/2006 10:30:24
Really enjoyable!

Thanks buloght.

Oh! DUH! I put a comment, but forgot to mention the lovely and really well made music by Chris-Scorposer! It was very well made and suited the game greatly. :)
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: buloght on Wed 26/07/2006 10:44:09
Thanks all  :)

Niko: I didn't want to bother chris with the music for such a small game, so I rather got unoriginal music. The music was all RIPPED!  :)

Rui: No it's intentional, I got the idea first from gobliins, though I didn't use their style, I stole all the colours from gobliins.  :) I did also try and make miniture characters (slightly bigger than theirs), I guess trying to get a slight gobliins feel.

Thanks ikari!

Thanks mashpotato!

Thanks chicky :), the characters weren't inspired by discworld (I think not), but that first puzzle is definitely a reference too it. But the first time I made the game (not the remake) I certainly had Discworld as inspiration, so I guess then yes :).

Thanks for playing Kristjanmam.

Thanks dkh.

Thanks progz!
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: Nikolas on Wed 26/07/2006 10:57:58
Maybe then you should get his name out of the readme file, cause it mentions Scorposer as the guy who did music and sound. :)

anyways, lovely game, the fact remains, lovely game.

Beautiful!

As soon I saw the game author I realised it was bound to be quality stuff. Excellent graphics, original gameplay and nice humor.

Well done, buloght.

PS. One small critique: some of the hotspots are a tiny bit small. It was hard for me to find out how

Spoiler

to get up to the library or into the ogre's tower "opening". Finding the books and the candles also took a bit of mousing over.

Oops, thanks for letting me know Nikolas, chris was going to do music, but I decided not to bother him with something as small as this game. Thanks niko!

Thanks aussie! I agree, I'll make them bigger. :)

Hope you will do a longer game soon!
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: magintz on Wed 26/07/2006 18:57:37
Very nice little game I found some of the navigation a little frustrating; how you couldn't clearly see some of the entrances or exits to the rooms.
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: buloght on Thu 27/07/2006 13:20:00
Thanks Petra  :), sthomannch and guest!

Magintz, thanks for the feedback, I can understand how some of the exists are unclear, I wanted the idea of a cutaway-twisted-room type of game ... or something like, I didn't really design clear doors in there I guess, I guess I thought the rooms are very small and the exits would be obvious as there are only a few of them anyway  :) I think the opening to the tower might be the less obvious, ... I think.
Title: Re: Knightsquire
Post by: voh on Fri 28/07/2006 03:58:23
That was fairly awesome. What I disliked was that the descriptions of situations and things wasn't always clear.

Especially with the ogre it was very unclear, as "That will wake him gently, but it's too soon" doesn't give me a single clue as to WHAT it's too soon for.

But other than that it was nice :)

Thanks guys :)

Voh: I totally agree with you, I gave very few hints. I remember when making it I kept thinking this is far too easy, don't make it too obvious. Hmm, I might have made it too unclear now  :).  I'll make sure to add enough hints in my next games  :-[

I didn't really thing that things were unclear. I really enjoyed playing the game and I think it was really well made. I actually got through it with out having to get any hints about what to do. So YAY me!!!! Keep making great games like this one and hopefully a little bit longer.....

Woah! What an amazing mini game! I like it alot. The graphics are sweet and the music is good. Although the story isn't something original or new, combined with those kind of funny puzzles, this makes a classic.

What can I say the game is visaully stunning! The storyline was very cool and the music suited the game perfectly.

I love the characters, they all have personality and are well "polished" The humour in the game is perfect! The Knight is by far the kewlest!

Hi :)

Spoiler

There are two candles (left and right on the wall in the tower), you need to pull both with the squire. Then make sure Knight and Squire are in the tower, then let Knight speak with Squire or Squire with Knight.

squire understand that candles are levers, but cannot speak with knight, and knight (the stupid one, really realistic!Ã,  ;) :D) can speak with squire but think that candle are just candle

I actually solved in the first time I tried.

I just got into the idea that knight and squire need to work together. Plus he had already given that "hint" into the game.

anyways indeed a not amazingly smooth puzzle, but I think that it was really fair and clever of B to put it in. :)

I HAVE to say something here!!!! For the first time, tonight I unzipped the game and played it (oh I love Friday nights, end of working week, relaxation and game time!!! :D) AND the game exceeded my expectations! I really loved it, not surprising the game won something in the annual awards, I think thats actually how I found the game. Bloody brillant in everything including the puzzle levels, hard but managed to finish the game and I learnt some valuable things from this game - how to make puzzles as hard as I can for players :). I personally think players love getting stuck even if they don't seem like they like it and get frustrated :P - I know I do love getting stuck in a game. Buloght, thank you for such a fantastic game and gorgeous graphics! Truely a pro! I think maybe you should consider making more games like that, on a longer level, and levels of puzzles, the harder it gets, etc... and sell them. Just an idea... :). U got talents there. (I must mention too that there are quite a few talented people on this forum, talents in many areas).
Cheers,
Snail

Alright, man, Knightsquire slap's the cat's ass!
I'd love to see a full length game with the same two characters, same concept, same humor and definately the same scene layout. I loved the BGs. The puzzles were fun too. Overall, it absolutely rocked. There were a few times I'd end up laughing at how the Knight treated his squire, I'd laugh and say, "What a dink..."

Very good,Ã,  Buloght := I loved it! It's one of my new favorites.

I want to see more Knightsquire Adventures!

How about knightsquire find himself in the possition of loosing his job since the king needs to cut back on knights in his pay due to not much money comming in from taxes. This is because of giants in the hills who eat the mountain goats that supply the goats milk to the market place, the sea monster who is attacking the fishermen and maybe a few other interesting things. Naturally its up to the knight to save the kingdom.

Add to that a bit of snow and a festival in the kingdom and you're also in line for december's MAGS. But I don't think finding a quest for the Knight and Squire is what will give you a lot of trouble since they could perfectly well be simple, overused and cliché and it would still be a charming adventure. Puzzles is what will surely give you more trouble.

I'd like to thank you, your cute little game gave me a sudden urge to play again Goblins 1 & 2 and Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2, the second one I just finished for the first time last week-end. I'll probably line up the Discworlds pretty soon since I'm in a fantasy setting mood these days. :)
