Post by: thewalrus on Tue 19/09/2006 05:26:46
I often look at the Games in Production board and I see soooooo many games that I drool over!!! There are so many promising looking games...... I'm sure that not all of them will get completed or maybe not in my life time, lol!!! But what games are you guys MOST excited about???

Here are my top 10 (in no particular order):

1. The Forgotten Element

2. Nataly Buchannon and The Lost Amulet of Kings

3. Da New Guys: Day of the Jackass

4. The Family Treasure 2

5. Chronicles of the Red Knight

6. The Legend of the Lost Lagoon

7. Kings Quest IV Remake

8. Indiana Jones and the Crown of Solomon

9. Drugbust

10. The Infinity String

I have faith in the creators of these projects that they will all get completed eventually and that they will be of the highest quality! (okay I'd be happy if 6 or 7 of them get done)!!!

Haven't there been threads like this before?

Blackwell Legacy, QfG2VGA, Blackwell Legacy, KQ4remake, Blackwell Legacy,Simon the Sorcerer 3, BJ6 and Blackwell Legacy.

BTW, Walrus - you do know you can just set a signature to your profile and have it appear automatically in your posts instead of just writing "Goo, goo, ga, joob!!!!!!!" yourself? Sure, you can if you want to. I tell you, though, it's might weird reading it. And as Pratchett put it, multiple exclamation marks are the sure sign of an insane mind. :=

Not a fan of list threads, but I'd like to encourage certain people to keep working!

1: Donna
Every time I see him Goldmund says he's still working on it, and it's close to being done, and it sounds greater and greater each time. I want to see it released!

2: Passport
Not many will be aware of this one, but I do hope it's made... very interesting ideas. Adventure game format but with a genuinely innovative gameplay dynamic: wtf?!

3: Oswyn
Won't be a massive game but I think all technical and artistic aspects of it will be up there with the best the amateur scene has put out, and I know a lot of effort is going into the game design. I don't even think the stuff I'm doing for it is bad!

4: Drugbust
Simply a nice setting and idea, with a lot of effort being poured in. Custard and Progz have a strong idea of what they are going for.

5: Time Out
I want to play it because I've only seen fleeting glimpses of things Eric has been doing over the years... it's such a tease.

6: FoY
Of course. Hardly seems worth adding here, I know it'll get made, over the course of the next several years. So I'm not holding my breath, but I look forward to it always.

None of these are LEC/Sierra lookalikes, besides FoY which makes a point out of staying true to style of one of the greatest games ever made, in my opinion. And it's that they can pull it off so well that erases any questions of motive I might have.

Yeah, the game has undergone many changes and is at a much higher level of quality.   I decided it would be best to change the name in order to distance the new version from the old.  I actually prefer the new title, since "Bestowers of Eternity" always sounded a bit cheesy and pretentious to me.

The ones that I'm really excited to play are Drugbust, FOY, and Chronicles of the Red Knight.

Other than that, I'm looking forward to all the games I'm planning to make, only because I tend to want to make games that I'd be interested in playing. :P

Actually, come to think of it, I'm really looking forward to the next OROW competition, so I guess I should mention that too.

And here we have the proof that the most interesting part, at least in an anticipating game, are the graphics. almost all the games mentioned here have superb graphics. just an idea that hut me I guess...

ATOTK
Puppet
Ledgend of the Lost Laggoon
Diamonds in the Rough
The Forgotten Element
FOY
Hatmakers Tale

and many others...

Are we allowed to mention games we're working on? Cause I just mentioned 3 :p... a little spam like post never hurts nobody I guess... :p

There was just an update of the Lost Element's games-in-production thread, and as for Shadowplay, yes it's very much in the works still. And I'm happy to see that people still remember the project :)

Edit: Heh, yeah I took it to mean The Forgotten Element. But now we have Legend of the Lost Lagoon, Legend of the Lost Jewel, MI The Lost Years, Lost in the Nightmare, so why not also a Lost Element.

If Lost Element is the same as Forgotten Element, then yes, I'm mad about that too!

Others that I'm itching to play:
- Emma Roide
- Quiero morir (if it's released in English)

A Tale of Two Kingdoms looks good too, but I haven't had time to try the demo/teaser thing yet.

And of course, The Marionette, seeing as it's late and all. But I had to take a break on it because of my real-life job.

Oops - so many "lost" titles (not to mention TV shows: Lost, The Lost Room...) I'm getting confused!  At least it's appropriate I couldn't remember the word "forgotten" :P

And though I'm not usually a huge fan of first-person games, I'll be rushing to download 'The Marionette' and 'Heartland Deluxe' (if it gets expanded).

Have to say I play so little nowadays. that's why I'm not very much "waiting" for games to be ready. But if some, then it would be drugbust and Amulet of Kings... Oh, and I'd very much like to see Buccaneer 2 making some progress, which reminds me, Hobbes, if you ever read this, I hope you haven't found a new sprites, I've got something ready by now :=

The one ones I know that am anticipating because am fairly new to this site and the point and click adventure genre are:

Aprrentice: Checkmate!
The Forgotten Element
Anything from Yahtzee
Next game from Spooks creator
Next Sydney Finds Employment

I have 36 AGS games that I have downloaded so far and only beaten on which is 5DAS. TFE looks extremely of high quality and animation with a lot of effort put into it.

When I first played a bit of Apprentice I & II, my jaw dropped. Yahtzee... well 5DAS was my first original AGS made game I played and beat which was ultra sweet. Spooks made a big impression as well so the next project I'm looking forward too. Last but not least, Sydney had excellent art style and animation, besides, being able to play as a hobo rocks!  ;D

It will be a while before I start to play those 36 games I got on my HD. First I gotta beat Grim Fandango!  8)

I'm kinda looking foward to Star Wars : SOTEGA. The tech demo was kinda cool. I love star wars, but couldn't think of a good way to make an adventure game out of it, so I'm curious to see if it's good.

I just finished Apprentice 1 , and I'm getting ready for 2 now, so 3 should be good too, huh?

Haha, somebody remembers (the game itself, not the name, haha)! Ahh man, I'm afraid I have to admit that Goldlagoon has gone Run Hot. Like tens of other projects, it just exploded and got way too big, even though I was going to release it in episodes. I have a whole bunch of art and music finished for it, the story was about 90% done and all, and then... I just stopped working on it. It's a shame because there was lots of stuff I was looking forward to seeing in the actual game. I remember there was a "Games that never were" type thread once, perhaps something like that should be done again. I would personally love to see material from games I anticipated but that were eventually cancelled. And I would definitely post some never before seen material of Goldlagoon, too!

I can't remember if I have already replied to this thread, but I'm still looking forward to The Legend of the Leitor's Edge. Who would have guessed! Also Ben Jordan Case 7 and The Blackwell Converge are something I can't wait to play.

EDIT: one more, Oswyn!!

There are a few new GiP threads I have not yet perused.

Anyway, my list thus far is as follows...

Forgotten Element
Resonance
Quest to End All Quests
Robots of Dawn
Dragonfall
The Darksiders
NES Quest
And Jack Hurt looks like it could be really good, too.

Colourwise looks interesting. I'll be playing that out of curiosity if nothing else.

I wasn't really looking forward to Hitchhiker's Guide until I played the demo, but I was impressed by the humour in it. It possibly reminded me of what I maybe think I seem to remember the TV and radio series' were somewhat similar to. If it gets cleaned up a bit, I think I might really like it.

Shame it's generally by catching word of mouth or what not to find out what happened to many of these games.
Title: Re: Which AGS games in production are you most excited about?
Post by: Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens on Wed 30/12/2009 04:38:37
Tom and I had some difficulties with Drug Bust, mainly the scope of it growing impossibly huge, and I decided to try and re-script it from scratch since there were so many problems with different gameplay elements Tom tried to get working (to his credit, he put a lot of effort into the game).  Eventually, though, it just became an albatross and by then he was busy with college again and I'd gotten a paying job.

I'd release the rebuild I made but there's very little to actually DO.  I wouldn't even classify it as a game yet aside from the shooting range which is the very last thing I implemented.

Rather than all the whiffle about vaporware would it be more productive to have a film-type rating added to the in production threads?

Like-

Concept
Development
Pre
Production
Demo
Post
Testing
Release

And then tell game makers not to post an in production thread until they reach Pre, not to post a concept or development thread as an in production etc.

It seems that some emotionally needy folks are just posting total vaporware, and legendary vaporware even, to get some love, which detracts from trying to find actual in existence projects.

I am not a massive fan of nostalgia at the best of times, least of all nostalgia for what never existed or was completed.

I think the AGS forums are a lovely community, but the constant zombie-ism related to these old projects etc. is quite tiring. Especially when you have eg Phoenix, McCarthy Chronicles both of which are really cool, in two different ways. Yet thread after thread, some of them now years old, pop up, about stuff that, to be frank, ain't never ever gonna happen. Ever.

Sigh.

Wouldn't change anything. Many of the vaporwares mentionned here reach as far as production (aren't people asked to post screenshots when creating a thread in the GiP?), anything that has yet to reach testing phase can get cancelled for any reason, release phase for games based on somebody else's IP.

What you don't know you can't miss, personally I don't play demo nor click on any thread in the GiP forum except for a handful of creators I trust will finish their games. Sole exceptions I did to my rule is for Gesundheit, who's demo I got from TIGSource, and FoY, which is the only game that was around before I stopped to check the GiP and that's still around nowadays.

Goldfish: I know it's not your intention or anything, but you sounded a little harsh. At least to me. Nobody wants to keep making a game forever. I'm not searching for love. I'm just a little in between opinions.

It's really wrong to consider that people are just creating this cool screenshots and stuff to play with people and make publicity. None of us did expect it in such scale. Lemmy and Blinky just wanted to make boobs, Snake wanted to make a game remniscent of his favourite choose your own adventure books, I wanted to make a game about my favorite book.

But the enthusiasm can't last forever, and after it's gone, you think over things more seriously.

The Forgotten Element doesn't even have a demo, but have you seen how much have the team worked on it?
Fountain of Youth has been in production like forever..(2003), have you seen recent art? Or noticed a change in Mod's avatar?

All of those guys have a finished version of the game, but it's not good enough. At least mine isn't.
I'd rather burn my pc, than release this game as it is. It's not enjoyable in this state. And that's my goal.
Title: Re: Which AGS games in production are you most excited about?
Post by: Grim on Thu 21/01/2010 20:01:51
I think posting news about a game that might never be finished gives the maker that little extra confidence that the whole thing is worth the trouble. In the end of the day, most of us here make games all on our own, spending countless hours at our pcs, staring at the lines of script, adjusting that one pixel that doesn't fit. It's easy to sometimes start thinking- what if no one is going to like it?What if it's just my own delusion that this project of mine is worth spending so much time on? Maybe it'd make more sense to take on fishing instead?
A little pat on the back never hurt anyone. A professional development studio has a goal they need to achieve or they're all out of jobs. They probably have meetings when they pat each other's backs all the time... But for us, lonely avant garde gamemakers of the future, all there is sometimes is some dude on the forum saying: nice work, looking forward to this. And it's enough to keep us going, because deep inside we know that this guy is just as passionate about this hobby as we are. It's really reassuring to realize that we're not the only ones. I guess...

Besides, isn't it only natural that many games in production will never see their releases? Games are like salmons swimming upstream I suppose. Not all of them will make it into the ocean.

In some cases, "in production" for FIVE years with no progress?

If you start something at puberty and there's been no advance by the time you reach college... Isn't that the software equivalent of the guitar gathering dust in the basement?

Games like that are actually becoming impossible to complete with current iterations of the AGS program itself.

Curiouser and curiouser.

I think it would be possible to have loads of more meaningful WiP threads and tag them as SPRITES WiP, BACKGROUND WiP etc.

It seems to me, reading through lots of threads, some starting in eg 2005 and having shown zero progress, that especially in earlier years there was a sense of pressure to match the pretensions of others- it wasn't grand enough to just say "I'm making some really cool sprites" etc.- one had to also be making a GAME! And if you weren't making a full GAME! of some sort then...

The music composers here do it the best. They just put out what they're doing and that's that.

I don't think there's a non-locked in production game with more than 100 or 30.000 views that hasn't been updated for the last five years.

Which game exactly are you speaking of?

Legend of the lost Lagoon by Dan.

I think he's lost the pace the last two years, but the man (at least some people said it) is working on it. Doesn't mean anything that there's not a demo or anything.
Some updates can be found here:
http://twitter.com/lostlagoon/

People choose to promote via demos other via screenshots only. McCarthy had most of its replies only by screenshots.

It's a pity that so many ambitious projects will most likely never see the light of day. Reading the thread reminded me of Woodlands which I was very much looking forward to. Sent the author a PM about it too.

On the one hand I understand authors not releasing games they don't feel are ready. On the other hand, just thinking of all the hard work that went into abandoned projects makes me a bit sad. From my perspective as an adventure player its better to release something that is rough around the edges but that many can still enjoy, than aiming for an impossible level of perfection that will never be achieved. Some of the games in the AGS database that I enjoyed most were less than polished in some ways. But of course I see the other side too.

The breeding places are upstream, which makes it an even better analogy! ;D

Now getting back to the actual topic; I think I have already commented, but currently I'm waiting on needles for Ben Jordan 8!! And Ben Jordan 2 Deluxe of course. And lots of other games too like ShattenReyze, Boryokudan Rue, Frantic Franco etc etc.

Just thought of a game that would collect all those unfinished projects and merged them into one unfinished surreal game of all beginnings and no endings... How great would that be?!!

The RON concept is sound, even if the snarled continuity and lack of a simple timeline etc. seems to be offputting to newcomers... Maybe there could be an ABANDONED thingy somewhere where people can put their game fragments out for adoption... like a puppy pound for games or something.

I dunno just thinking "out loud". :)

My Ultra Super Top Most No1 loong awaited AGS game of all times is no other than Shadowplay by GarageGothic.

I read a preview of the game back in 2003 in an e-magazine called The Inventory and I've been lurking here since in the hope of it passing through it's maker's imagination into reality  ;D

My second choice would be The McCarthy Chronicles: Episode 2

For now, there aren't really much games to anticipate for, considering the long times they will take for completion.

Take 'A New Danger' and the 2nd installment for the McCarthy chronicles. Those are likely dreams we might see only in the distant future. For now, IGF 2010 Student Finalist Boryokudan Rue by teen potential TheJBurger, The Far Corners of the World by Wesray and The City at Night by paolo are games I will want to keep my tab on.

Police Quest 2 remake by DCIllusion showed a lot of potential, altough I realize this one will probably never see the light of day ever again.

Space Quest 2, and pretty much everything in production by the people of Infamous Adventures. (Quest for Infamy, Project X etc.)

And last but certainly not least, General Knox's project. I have a good feeling about it, even though I haven't actually seen in-game footage of it yet. But his characters and artwork posted in the critics lounge looks amazing.
