I'm stuck on Day Four-

Spoiler
I need a flute and I've seen one for sale in the city- but I don't have the money for it.  Is there another flute?  Is there a way to make money?  I'm stumped.

Also, I randomly got killed by the Barghest... how do I avoid that?

Jenimad:
Spoiler
Go for a swim.  There's an island that is more than it seems.  There's something valuable there you can sell to the jeweller, but only if you can see through the illusions.  There might be a better way to get the money, but I haven't found it, yet.

For the barghest, there's a book in the monastery that tells you how to beat him.  If you have the bottle, , something else in the monastery can also help.  I think there is another solution to this puzzle, but it involves running, which I have never done succesfully.
[close]

I'm stuck not far from there:
Spoiler
After the flute gets stolen I pinched the shield from the blacksmith, but I can't get out of the city without him taking it back.  Is there anyway to get the guards to let me out the front gate, yet?

Unfortunately, I'm still stuck...

Spoiler
All I've been able to find from swimming around is a little alcove with a conch shell- which sells for 1 ducat.  I tried using the water-bored stone around and on the shell, but I couldn't find anything- so I'm wondering if I'm even in the right place...

Thanks for the tip on the barghest- I hadn't even thought of that, and it worked like a charm ^_^

Ignore my last problem.  I solved it.  However,
Spoiler
I've managed to visit the fairies, and have recieved quests from the seelie and unseelie, but I don't know where to start to solve either.  The bard tells me to check out the village, but I go there and nothing new.  Still goblins there, but there isn't much to interact with.  The death poem when I try to enter the village seems to hint that I need to bring help somehow.

Spoiler
i escaped from the castle, passed two guards and now stand in front of the tailor. i guess i need to get in, to find some clothing that doesn't look "foreign", but i can't. i tried to interact with the smithy's shop (hoping to get in to find something to get to the tailor)  but i can't. I only have the notepad in my inventory. Tried to pass the guard by the harbour, too, but that didn't work. What am i missing?

I am on Day 4 and I don't know what to do next. I went to the island and got a brain in a jar but I don't know how to get the stone from the druid guy to see through illusions. I also think I should light my lantern with matches to look at the hole in the ancient tree north of the druid village but I can't get out of the city without soaking the matches I've bought and rendering them useless.

No. I found a wounded pigeon but he just healed it and I used it to trick the giant into thinking I am strong. I don't know what other animals there are that would work save the raven but I don't know what to do with it. It just sits there in a tree with a shiny thing in its mouth.

I've also just given the brain to the scarecrow, although I don't know if I should have done that.

I'm stuck as well.  I'm in chapter 5, and I can't seem to figure out how to
Spoiler
get the girdle back from jeweler, which is something that I'm pretty sure I need to be able to enter the goblin-overrun village in the woods without getting instantly killed.  The bard's hint says I need to resort to something sneaky and underhanded to get the girdle back without having to pay for it, but I am at a complete loss as to what that might be.  If there is another way to get into the village without the goblins killing me, I'd be interested in that as well. :)

Thanks again, Lyaer.

Made some real progress, I think, but I'm stuck again looking for a mirror.
Spoiler
I found the Changeling's Comb, which will let me disguise myself as a goblin.  HOWEVER, I need a mirror, and the only mirror I've seen is in the monestary... I can't pick it up and if I use it there I get killed.

I'm also stumped with getting out of the city without swimming and can't even begin to think of how to deal with the giant- or I could guess, but it appears I can't do that while the druid is hiding.  I know where my belt is too, but am stumped there too.

Basically am good and stuck XD

To trick the giant, you need apples, a bag with sand from the beach, and the healed pigeon. When you talk to the giant say he's not strong and then you'll have a strength contest. Use the items I mentioned before in that order.

You can get money from gambling with the goblins with the horseshoe in your inventory, or from getting something from the island (which you need the self-bored stone to find) or from stealing from the tailor's tip jar.

Stuck in Chapter 4

Spoiler
I've been to the stable numerous times but have not seen a horseshoe. I gave the brain to the scarecrow and have the pumpkin, the hair, the nail, the lantern, a sharpened sword (no coin anymore!), apples, holy water, the love note, the belt advertisement, the dagger, the bone, the bag, and the shovel.

I gave the conch to the faerie after giving her cider on day 3. I got the coin out of the forest, but spent it sharpening the sword.

I solved her riddle but have no gold to throw in the well.

I found the grass for the sorcerer's apprentice.

I've solved the giant's challenges and had him stomp the barghest.

I know where to buy matches (presumably to light the lantern) but again have no gold.

Post by: Lambonius on Tue 17/07/2007 23:11:52
Well, I've done the two faeries' tasks,
Spoiler
That is, beating the giant at the strength contest and defeating the goblins, and I've found the treasure at the bottom of the rainbow and attempted to use it to buy back the belt, but the jeweler says she has another buyer now.  Also, if I go back to the faerie realm, I am automatically taken to the faerie queen and she tells me that I will have my rest in the faerie realm.  Then the screen slowly fades to white, but I have control back, like I'm supposed to do something to stop it, but I don't know what.  If it fades all the way to white, the game ends, and I get what I assume to be the worst ending.  What am I missing?  How do I clear Maeldun's name?
[close]

Also, I've encountered many small bugs throughout the game, the most annoying of which is where the bard keeps telling me that I need to
Spoiler
go back to the village in the woods and get something important (which I assume is the warrior's skull) that the goblins may have left there.  Unfortunately, I've already finished that task; I've long since taken the skull relic from the village, and defeated the chief back at their camp.
[close]
Without the bard to give me those subtle clues, I am utterly lost.

But if there are no dead ends then there has to be some other way to get out of the whiteness, right? I used the charm to save the princess to gain her favor hopefully for a better ending. I tried playing the flute in the fae realm to break the spell but that doesn't work. I really wish I knew what to do. The bard tells me to go to the fae realm so I assume I've got to break the whiteness spell and not just avoid the place.

Title: Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms

I meant a dead end as in we have no choice but to get the bad ending because we used an object at the "wrong" time even though the game had led us to believe it was the right thing to do.

2.How do I retrieve the girdle from the jeweler?

I at least know what the pumpkin, mouse and crystal are for.

Spoiler
Give the love poem from the stable to the fairy queen, then she'll want a pumpkin, rodent and crystal. Give those to her and you'll get a magic pumpkin. Give that to the stable boy to enable him to marry the princess. Unfortunately the princess still died in my game so he didn't end up marrying her.

I suspect the tailor (since the princess mentions him at dinner) or the sparkling eyed guy who lives in the shipwreck as the killer. I started the game over and when you first enter the main hall with the staircase you see the shipwreck guy upstairs but I wasn't fast enough to click on him. I always thought he was a faerie like the fox girl since her eyes sparkle too but I was never able to prove this in game.

Concerning endings (spoiler heavy):
Spoiler
So far I have found three of the endings:
1- Stop the goblins and stay in fairyland.
2- Decline to aid Geraint and Paradur in taking down the sorcerer.
3- Defeat the wizard by summoning the seelie queen in the late king's bedroom, without proving the murderer, saving the princess, etc.  This being the first "Good ending"
There are still two more endings.  I don't believe these include minor variations on ending three, such as the fate of the tailor and whether you recovered your girdle.  Saving the princess may not even be enough to reach ending four, as there were lines written in Ending 3 that seemed to imply she was still alive and in danger of a future assassination (unless I misread), which seems to imply there are variations of the same ending wherein she survives.
I think it's safe to assume that one of the five endings is the 'perfect' or 'just about perfect' ending, where most or all of the loose ends are tied up, with the murderer apprehended, etc,  Though it is also possible that ending three is the only good ending, and the perfect ending is just another variation of it.  That (probably) leaves one last ending, but does it fall between ending 3 and the perfect ending?  Or does is it something completely different?
Has anyone managed to get an ending other than the ones I have listed yet?
a side note: One of the official screen shots features what looks like some kind of confrontation inside the wizard's tower.  Are these screen shots actual game footage?  This would seem to imply an alternate final showdown, even.

Final Chapter Questions-
Spoiler
I killed the monster in the Princess' bedroom, but I can't wake her up.
Barring that?  I still can't get to the King's Chambers... Help?  I just want to finish the game once, even if the ending isn't the best XD.
[close]

Spoiler
You don't have to wake the princess up. If you gave the magic pumpkin to the stable guy, you'll see a new ending.

And to enter the king's room, try to open the gate to your friends.
[close]

Spoiler
I don't know how to do that either.

Princess at end question:

Spoiler
How do you get into the princess' room to kill the monster? All the doors on the second story were locked and I couldn't use the nail on them. I thought the only thing to do was to let Garaint and the rest in the front gate, but the princess died in that ending.

Yeah, I got a happy ending too- but it hints at a lot of things I don't know.

Spoiler
I'm pretty sure from the hinting that I should have done something for the Changeling and possibly something for the apprentice-
As well as something with my stolen belt/girdle thing.
AND I don't know who killed the king...

The ending should tide me over until some people come up with some leads ;D

OK, I'm stuck big time...

Spoiler
* Princess Rhiannon is under a spell in the woods. The fox faery says I should be able to free her, but I don't see how.
* I can't afford the flute in the jeweller's shop (the miserly cow only gives me one ducat for the conch)
* I don't know where to light the lantern.
* I don't know how to get into the hole outside the ogre's lair.
* I don't see how to get a pumpkin.
* I can't get into the hole in the tree next to the ring of stones.
* I don't know how to help the pigeon with the broken wing.
* I'm not sure whether I can get the matches from the shop in the market.
* I've found the portal but can't get through it.

I have: sword; apples; acorns; parchment; love poem; conch; key; note from jeweller; unlit lantern; nail; self-bored stone; empty cider bottle; shovel; dagger; wounded pigeon; squirrel; bag of sand; horseshoe.
[close]

Any hints please? (Hints, not solutions.) Thanks very much.

On my first playthrough, I encountered the thief on the bridge and he wanted food, but I didn't have any for him.  On my second playthrough I made sure to have apples and that pumpkin with me all the time, but I never encountered him there.  Does anyone know how to trigger that event again?  And is there anything you can do for him if you do?

I'm surprised that so many people try this considering that in several "plot paths", the beggar will be here to block your path.

Not being able to cross even if he isn't there is a bug, which will be fixed shortly (apologies for the inconvenience).

BUT, there is another way across, which you were intended to take if the beggar is there. So your progress is not actually impeded.

I found another bug trying to cross the river in a different way. Can anybody just spoil me on this one? I'm getting frustrated.

About the bug:

Spoiler
I went south along the seashore from the city, and then west to the bridge screen. THe message about the fox not wanting to get near the bridge popped up (although I hadn't triggered the fox to chase me yet) and wouldn't leave my screen regardless of clicking on it. I had to kill the program.

it's mostly luck, I think, if you try enough times you'll manage to pass the bridge before you get the message about the fox, and then get it after you've passed. I think it would be better to go around though, and use the lily pads to cross the river, until the bug is fixed.

Spoiler
Q:Princess Rhiannon is under a spell in the woods. The fox faery says I should be able to free her, but I don't see how.
A: As far as I could tell, she's freed on her own, in time.

Q: I can't afford the flute in the jeweller's shop (the miserly cow only gives me one ducat for the conch)
A: There are many ways to gain coins in this game.  The goblins are one very easy source, and you thereby get the chance to keep the conch shell and the other valuable items you gain over the course of the game, to use in other ways that might gain honor and wisdom.  If you're intent on playing through, however, the tailor's shop might have your answer re: quick money.

Q: I don't know how to get into the hole outside the ogre's lair.
A: Whatever's inside that hole isn't very dense.

Q: I don't see how to get a pumpkin.
A: You need to convince the scarecrow.  He won't help you the way he is now.  If you give him something, that's a different story...and the proper gift involves getting very wet.

Q: I don't know how to help the pigeon with the broken wing.
A: Who is good with animals?

Q: I'm not sure whether I can get the matches from the shop in the market.
A: You can, but it's a tricky maneuver.  Are there alternative ways out of the city?  Perhaps one involving your character annoying someone else?

Q: I've found the portal but can't get through it.
A: Show the bard your bored stone and see what he says.

I managed to evade the fox and get to the other side of the river, and I've talked to the druid, but I can't use the faerie ring. I've walked around it 3 times, both clockwise and counterclockwise, but nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?

maybe fire?, didn't have that riddle.

Thanks ledz!

Well, that's two questions I guess. You actually need to give the fairy queen those 3 items *before* you defeat the goblin chief. After you do that, you will get that scene with the white light and will never be able to go back there, even if you avoid the crappy end.

To avoid being trapped in the fairy land, there are a couple of solutions. The obvious one is to use the cold iron charm from the goblin camp, but if you used that already, just use the dagger on yourself.

Faery's test: a question:

Spoiler

Am I right in thinking that the door between two caves is the same (fire, cloud, etc) in each direction? In other words, if going from cave A to cave B would take me through, say, fire, then going from cave B to cave A would also take me through fire?

I ask because I've graphed the structure of the caves out on paper, and it doesn't seem to be possible to visit all rooms using only two objects if the doors are the same in each direction.
[close]

Faery's test: SOLUTION METHOD that does not rely on trial and error (assuming what I say in the spoiler above is true):

Spoiler

There are five rooms: purple (where you start), red, yellow, green and blue. Draw a large pentagon and join every corner to every other (so that you have a pentagram inside a pentagon). Now label each of the corners so each has a different one of these colours (the order doesn't matter). Take any two objects and pass through one of the doors in the purple room that you can get through. Note what object you used to get through the door and which room you end up in. Write the name of the object on the line joining the purple corner of your pentagon to the corner for the colour of the room you end up in. For example, if you use the feather and end up in the green room, then write "feather" on line joining the purple and green corners of the pentagon. Now go through the door you just came through to get back the purple room, and repeat for another door. (Be careful not to go through the middle door, which will take you back outside.)

Keep going until you have done as much as you can, then return to the purple room, speak to the faery and pick a different combination. Keep doing the above until you have written on each of the ten lines on your diagram.

Pick one of the objects. Lightly sketch out a new pentagram in a pentagon and copy on to it the exact arrangment of lines that are labelled with the object you have chosen. Repeat (on a new pentagon plus pentagram each time) with the other five objects. This gives you six new diagrams.

Now take these diagrams two at a time in all possible combinations (there are 15 ways to do this). If you find a pair of diagrams that enable you to trace a path starting in the purple room and visiting all of the other rooms, then the two objects in this pair are the two you need to choose to solve the puzzle.

This method works. The first time I tried it I made a mistake.

Spoiler

At the spot where the druid warns you, he is still there hidden in the trees, you can sorta see his robes right behind the tree on the left, you cannot talk with him, for some reason I got your bard's friend's dialoque in plain red letters (no dialogue boxes around). I just gave him the pigeon there, and he restored it. I don't know if that was a bug, but he was there, so I could heal the pigeon in chapter 5 even though the gobliiins was in the village.

Hey Yaya, as for the golden apple:

Warning: detailed spoilers below  :D
Spoiler
Supposing you haven't gotten rid of the goblins at Havgan yet, go to the lake with standing water. Use the comb and go to Havgan, where the druid used to be but is now overrun by goblins. Go into the druid's old house, and put the golden apple in the stew pot. The goblins will eat it and fall asleep. After that, you can go find Skullcrusher and beat him.

Now for my question. I have done everything I've stated above; but how do I get the orb?

As per the orb:
Spoiler

you need the key, I don't know if you'll be able to get it back from the monk but once you have the key back, open the window in the library and get out of the monastery, then climb through the window (the monk won't be in the library) and you can open the glass cupboard and get the orb.

I can't get to the Gobelin camp. I get back to my humane form and get killed by the gobelin guard. Any hint on that? (I have the gobelin mask in my inventory and tried to use it to no avail)

You can use the bag of sand or the black crystal. Do I have use of the crystal later on in the game? If so, I'd rather keep it. How can I use the bag of sand? how precisely to get to this mythic wizard's tower place that shows up on the map from the castle (and seems to be where the lighthouse is).  The reason being that I used the holy water on the first barghest and the charm to save the princess from pooka's enchantment, so unless I find this snake symbol mentioned there is no way of removing the barghest with what I have in my possession.  It's a shame that the horseshoe can't be used here to trap the barghest in the corner, since it's largely a useless one-off item for gambling with the goblins otherwise.

Spoiler
Calite the assassin? Cause he couldn't pay back the tailor? The Tailor wanted money too? Moreover, what evidence is there that we have to give to the fairy queen that Calite is the assassin. In fact, in one scene, Calite demands that the sorceress apprentice should reveal the assassin. An assassin demands that he be revealed? I only finished the game at about 80% wisdom, so I must've missed evidence that Calite did it? Moreover, we hear, after escaping the castle, from the large house, that someone in that house was involved. How is Calite linked to that house, where the jeweler does business? Calite is the assassin? Please say you're kidding.

Mega-spoilers-

Spoiler
I didn't really see all the cutscenes, but I just tried it out- and apparently he is the assassin.  The reasoning I gave (that worked) was that he wanted to set up a stronger leader... I gave a note and a bit of cloth for evidence.  I still need to work backwards, I think, to figure out what's going on...
And personally, I think that conversation at the large house might be a red herring- for the assassin anyway.  I think around the time of the assassination, someone was stealing your belt-thingy... which shows up at the jeweler's.  I need to replay the game, but that's my theory for the moment.

In my opinion, such a major spoiler probably shouldn't have been posted, because people will read it anyway :P

Spoiler
It does make sense if you pay attention to dialogue. You can figure out who was in the castle at the time by talking to various characters, and then by process of elimination (figuring out who was doing what during the night), can find out the assassin that way. You don't really *need* to see all the cutscenes to work this out

Title: Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms
Post by: on Sat 21/07/2007 06:54:24
Jeni, that makes no sense at all. That person as an assassin is so off base that it can be said that he was chosen for one reason: so people would play again and again. As I said, a cut scene shows that it can't be they. Would an assassin demand that he be revealed.

Additionally, the note is not evidence of anything. Let's look: the note says you predicted so let us come together. Who is this person to make diplomacy? When was he told and why? Who is he to be told of a prophecy?

I really have to laugh? I'm sorry.

I must come to the conclusion that the authors decided on this assassin so as to make us play and play. This makes sense. Why? Cause it took them a long, long while to create this game. So to make that long effort worthwhile, we have to take a long, long time to figure (more like try and try again) out the culprit.

The real assassins, I submit, are the authors. They who assassinate logic and their own pixel reality.

With more thought, an assassin would make sense. It doesn't here.

Not to say it's a bad game. It's a good one. It's just to say, somethings were poorly figured.
Title: Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms
Post by: Fizzii on Sat 21/07/2007 07:04:02
Sorry, Huh?, but you must've missed a number of clues for the player...

Spoiler
To all the city folk, villagers, soldiers, etc, Maeldun IS the murderer. The assassin asks the apprentice to find Maeldun (but refers to him as the assassin of course).

The note works as evidence, because Seelie can't work out if Maeldun is fully correct without some evidence of it. But it's not proper evidence for the player, since anyone could've written it. There are two other items that you can use as evidence.
[close]

Being honest, I didn't know who the assassin was for sure until towards the end when we were finishing the game. Only Radiant knew for 2+ years. And then it turned out I was correct just by playing through the game, so you can't just say that the author was illogical.
Title: Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms
Post by: on Sat 21/07/2007 07:21:34
Fizzi, first off I see no evidence that this person did it. Maybe I missed something as I  did only get 80% wisdom.

However, the note proves nothing. In fact, it argues against this individual. As I pointed out, who is this person to make alliances? He is not in the realm's government. And why would that individual contact this assassin? He has no pull in Theylinn.

Moreover, why would the assassin demand that the assassin be revealed when he is the assassin?

To boot, if the assassin did what he did to make Theylinn rougher, how would he know that the daughter would be, or that she would marry someone who would be?

That you didn't know until you were told shows that it was arbitrary and a dice throw.

Hey, the game is well done, but it suffers here.

Title: Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms
Post by: Fizzii on Sat 21/07/2007 07:30:20
I didn't know *for sure*, but I had a good idea that it was this character that did it. I didn't make an arbitrary choice - the evidence pointed to this person far more than any other. Besides, someone worked out the assassin by themselves, so it can't be that illogical.

Spoiler
If you play through properly, you might find some more clues for yourself, and more explanation once all is revealed in the game. Basically the whole thing is rather complex and comes to a power play, and I'm sure you know of another bad guy around.
[close]

Spoiler
Try taking the full truthgem to the assassin for instance, then you'll get a better reason, even if you die :P

Title: Re: A Tale Of Two Kingdoms
Post by: on Sat 21/07/2007 07:40:53
Fizzi, why would I take the truth gem to the assassin when there is no evidence that he is the assassin? The game demands I take it to the princess, so I can move on.

As I said, I got only 80% wisdom, so maybe there's evidence that so points. But--and I repeat myself--the assassin is overheard demanding that the assassin be revealed.

Now why is that done? Because as I said, the authors, having spent a long time making this game, wanted players to spend a long time playing.

No assassin demands to have himself revealed.

You put that in to misdirect. It makes no sense.

Fizzii I apologize for asking about the assassin. After digging thru the first 6 or 7 pages i saw numerous discussions about it and figured it had been revealed in the next 7 pages. Like i posted i didnt want to keep digging thru cause i saw a few spoilers that i didnt mean or want to see. I dont want to take anything away from this excellent game you all worked so hard on, and i hope you arent too upset. I would have figured out the assassin purely by process of elimination eventually by choosing answers and restoring until i got it. Yeah I'm that guy that reads the last paragraph of a book before i start reading it.

Now, Ive been trying to get on the caravelgames site but my comcast has been down most of the night and now i cant get on. In my post about the error, you said you could send me a save game file from patch 1.1. I was wondering if that offer is still good and you could send me one saved right at the very start of the game. Will that still fix my error problem when i get there? Im going for the 100, 100. email is zazzarmp@hotmail.com

*edit* For what its worth i edited my original post to try and lure people away from ruining the mystery for themselves. If they want to know so bad, make a table and just try all combinations of people and answers like i should have done. *edit*

Raven, giant, scarecrow puzzles are related to fairytales (try and think of a fairytale which features a raven, giant strength-proving test, and not-very-smart scarecrow). Portal should be easy to find - the location is very 'faerie-like', but you do need something to actually reveal the portal

Jon -

Spoiler
Scarecrow - Wizard of Oz (If only I had a brain). You'll need to explore the ocean to find this one.
Raven and shiny thing - one of Aesop's fables (The Fox and the Raven). Try and get it to sing.
Giant - The Brave Little Tailor - prove you're stronger than the giant by means of trickery.

Jon - that's a side quest anyway, and should not hinder you from progressing further (Just means you don't get the very best ending)

Zazzaro - You do have to get the exe file, and you replace the v1.0 exe file with this new v1.1exe file (note that your saved games will no longer work with this version)
The exe file can be downloaded here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NEEUX950
It will need to be unzipped to your ATOTK folder.

Ok,  this little rabbit is still totally stuck! Sorry, but can anyone give me very clear step-by-step directions on how to

get to the screen with the lily pad? Once I get to the bridge I can either go back to the beach (right) or back to the cross roads (up) but I can't go along the stream to the left. If I go back to the crossroads, I can go up to the monastery, and then left to the stream bank, but at this point I can't go down to the point with the lily pad. (I can do this in human form by walking across the stream, but not in rabbit form.)

I absolutely loved this game, and remember checking it out a couple years ago. So glad it's finally released and well worth the wait!

I beat the game with an okay ending, and now I'm playing through very carefully and trying to get 100/100.

However I'm stuck escaping the castle...

P S~
Spoiler
The maze is different each time you play. It's basically just trial and error. Pick one of the items and goes as far as you can through the doors, collecting the games that you can. Then go back and pick another item that will get you further.

Keys to the maze doors:

Item - Door
Mole claw - rocks
Eagle wing - clouds
Dragon Scale - fire
Leaf - leaves
Bat wing - night

I don't think you even need to go near the bridge. How I did it...
Spoiler
...was to have the fox chase me from the scarecrow and went down, down, left, left, and click walk on the lilypad. Those directions might be wrong (and I can't go back and check cause I saved over the file), but basically just take the shortest route to the lilypad.

Sorry if I am repeating someone else's question.  I only read about half of this thread because (a) it's 16 pages long and (b) in checking out spoilers looking for someone in my same situation, I ended up learning the solutions to like 6 different puzzles I hadn't even encountered yet, which is a bit frustrating since it detracts from the satisfaction of solving at least a few of those on my own.

Anyway, I'm in chapter 4--
Spoiler
My two biggest questions are:

-How do I get an animal for the druid?  I'd prefer not to use the well wish since I want to save it (and besides even using the well wish, I don't know what to do).  I found the squirrel and the acorns but can't seem to capture the squirrel--teh bag is apparently too small.

-Is there some way to play dice with the goblins without losing my bottle?  I want to be able to keep the bottle so I can get more cider later for use with faeries if necessary.  Once again, if I can avoid it I don't want to use the well just yet--I know I can wish for wealth but if there's a way to have the goblins' wealth, the cider, AND still have my wish un-used, then that's the way I want.

-Is there any point to wishing for a drink at the well?  It was hilarious seeing Cuppit again but it didn't do anything for me that I can see.

Beat the game without too much trouble, but I have a few outstanding questions (about sidequests mostly). Probably some pretty big spoilers below.

Spoiler
- I guessed the right assassin (just since he'd been obviously lying the whole time I guess), but when I gave the gem to the princess after that, the game crashed. Has this been fixed in the new version that was posted eariler? Hope so ... since that will necessitate starting the game all over again, it'd be nice to get a couple hints as to how to do some of the sidequests, as there are no logical ways to start them, or any hints in the game whatsoever, really. IE ...
- Getting the belt back from the jeweller. I assume this can be done in the time she's out of her shop, but there's really no obvious way to go about this.
- Helping the changeling ... he says he can't go through the gate because he doesn't want to. Maybe there was supposed to be a hint given somewhere, but I guess it was too vague for me  :P
- Helping the apprentice. Perhaps this has something to do with the cider-making woman in the village, but who knows.
- Using the horseshoe to beat the Barghest. This is more just curiosity really, as I want to see what happens.

Oh, and I don't know if these have been fixed yet, but a few fairly major crash bugs: 1). The previously mentioned one with the princess.  2). If you happen to have the goblin in boxer shorts appear in that screen to the south of the village (only happened to me once) and you talk to him, the game crashes after the first line of dialogue. 3). If you try to use the self-bored stone when Rhiannon is trapped in the forest, you can't leave your inventory and the game freezes if you hit escape. 4). If you play your flute a 2nd time in the main hall in the end game, the dialogue replays (in red) and then the game crashes when it tries to move the non-existant guards. 5). When you're being chased by the Barghest, if you try to enter the ship the game locks up. Probably happens at the monestary window too.
[close]
That's all. Thanks for any hints/nudges anyone can provide. I was thinking of trying to put together a walkthrough, but I'm not smart enough to get 100% in both stats  :P

In my opinion, such a major spoiler probably shouldn't have been posted, because people will read it anyway :P

This is a help thread.  Someone asked a question, and I answered it, but I agree, in retrospect, it was probably a poor judgement call on my part.  Apologies.  I've edited my post to contain ridiculous and misleading information, but I'm afraid there isn't much I can do about the reaction.  >_o

Jocker -
Spoiler
It's random, but whenever I've played I've had a configuration like this in the opening room:
  A   _  B
C           C
Invariably I have been able to solve the puzzle by choosing the item corresponding with door A and one of two items that doesn't correspond with any of the initially visible doors.  (So shouldn't need take more than 2 tries.)  But I don't know if that was just odd luck for me, or if that's an actual pattern.  All I know is it's worked on three consecutive play-throughs.

Your goal is to collect all four gems and return them to the alter in the room that best fits them.

This is the most complex, side-quests-available, multiple-solutions adventure game I've ever played!  What this game really needs is a comprehensive walkthru--has the author or anyoen else made one yet?  Just going through this thread looking for the solutions I need is like playing another adventure game entirely!

Thanks to those who helped me previously.  I'm stuck again, in Chapter 5 this time.  I'd appreciate some strong hints:

Spoiler
-How do I beat the giant at his strength test?  Based on the fairy tale this comes from, I assume I need to find some cheese somewhere to pretend it's a rock.  But I can't find cheese anywhere.  Or is there some other way to do this?

-How do I save Havgan and route the goblins as the Fairy Queen asked me to do?
[close]

I haven't used my wish yet--but I can't get to the well anyway--I do NOT have cider (just empty bottle), but I do have two full pages of inventory (so I won't list every item).  I just succeeded in helping the robed girl but it didn't appear to accomplish anything other than increasing my honor score.

This game rocks, btw!

This game rocks, btw!

giant
Spoiler
yes, you need to trick him. Three items, you need. one of them may resemble rock but you can easily smash it and it is easily accesible.. The second one is supposed to be one of the things that a good warrior should posses, and may trick the giant too. The third item is something that flies up.

the second one i donlt know yet. But hope this one will give you some clue.

Spoiler
you need to sneak into the village without causing alarm- you need a disguise. the disguise would be of fair folk's doing- but an object is what youre looking for (think of the changeling) you need to "snow-white" the goblins. I'm kinda-sorta working on a walkthrough at the moment- it's really really messy, though, so it might be a while (assuming someone else doesn't beat me to it).  I'm working on the Belt sidequest at the moment...

But anyhow, to get the rope (blatant)-
Spoiler
Pull the rope to ring the alarm when there's no guards wandering in the hallway, and then use the hand icon on the balcony in front of the king's bedroom to jump down.  Then you can scoot into the guardroom and grab the rope.

Hints/spoilers for the belt quest-
Spoiler
You need the rope, yes.

You also need someone with experience at being a bit underhanded- perhaps you can get this person's cooperation somehow?

It was pretty easy once it got rolling, but while you can activate everything early, you can't do the break-in until Chapter Six.

You need to somehow get the thief's cooperation- try giving him a taste of his own medicine.

What I have worked out for the belt quest so far-
BLATANT spoilers (don't say I didn't warn anyone):

Spoiler
First of all, you need to know where the belt is and have something physical to show people.  You just need to look at the ad for it and then click on it with the hand icon in the Jewelry store- the lady will give you a piece of paper about it.

Then you need to have had your flute stolen- when you go to get it back, stop in the entrance and look up- realizing there is a net there makes it so you won't trip it.  Proceed as usual, getting your stuff back.  When the game tells you that there's someone coming, click the hand icon on the net- this will cause you to spring the trap and catch the thief- I don't know if there are other ways to do it, but I chose to talk at him a bit and get him to promise to stop thieving.

Once the thief is sorta on your side, you can show him the belt advertisement...  I don't know if I should continue, but that's a HUGE start on getting the belt back.

Dang it i wonder why im having the pigeon problem. No one else seems to be having this problem. I wonder if its something i did questwise that triggered it. Like i said i thought maybe it was a bug or they changed the puzzle with it cause on my second run thru, items are in different places. The raven is in a new spot, and the single coin you find is in a new spot. I guess i can start over again and see if i run into the same problem.

...in the beginning of the game when you're at the castle, you can see Ruadh (the thief) wandering about on the top floor. I tried to look at him, touch him and speak to him, but he ignored me.

Is this "sighting" important to the game later on? It's a really great touch, I'm just wondering what relevance it bears to the rest of the story. Maybe I should wait and see for myself?

Okay, I managed to get past where I was stuck with the belt, so I've finished the game.  My final score was 95/94, I was missing five cutscenes, and I did all the sidequests.
I can't promise I know EVERYTHING, but I am going to work on that walkthrough and try and give some help here still.

Plus I have to figure out what to do with a walkthrough anyhow, because it'll likely be kinda unwieldy to post here ^_^;

Well, Finished my second run thru with 95 wisdom, 95 honor, 19/20 cutscenes, and 5/5 side quests. So close to perfect. I wonder what I'm missing, although i have a feeling. I have a pretty good idea on the cutscene, and where i could earn more points. Anyone that has finished, please read this spoiler to speculate on possible points and cutscene i missed.

Spoiler
At the start, the bard said he might go see the druid, i kept checking there during each chapter and left and entered his area over and over but the bard never showed. Anyone see a cutscene with them? And points... I'm sure there is more than one way to beat the sorcerer. Im guessing you have to beat it without Geriard being turned into a bird. Anyone found any other ways to beat the end. Also the evidence for the assassin i heard there was a crumpled note and pieces of hair. I did not find those which im sure cost me a few points.

I'm right at the beginning and I have a question.  I'm not stuck s such,  But something is confusing me.

Spoiler

I have the sceptor and I went into the chamber that had been prepared for me.  After some looking around and not finding much, I went to exit the room.  Instead of going into the hallway I was tken to a dream sequence where a woman told me to choose two of 7 objects.

But before I had the chance to check the objects out I accidently clicked on the exit, and instead of going back into the chamber I was in some kind of meadow. I wanted to go back into the room with the objects so I restored my savegame and started from back in the chamber...

... BUT... clicking on the door this time brought me back into the hallway instead of the dream sequence again, and nothing I do seems to be able to trigger it off again.

Is there way way of triggering this to happen or does it occur randomly? I really want to check it out before meeting the king for dinner.

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
I'm one wisdom point away!!!!!!!!!

I just got 99/100/18/5. I've gotten the two other cutscenes before, I just forgot during this playthrough. (Paradur/Morholt and Rhiannon/Geraint )

Otherwise, do I get to take the glory as the one with the highest score?  ;D If not, can I take the glory for figuring out how to beat the barghest with the horseshoe? (not recommended though)

Sirus,
the highest I ever got was 97 Wisdom 100 Honor, 20 cutscenes and 5 side quests  :)

I have a suspicion that the one thing I did too early and it ended up costing me the 3 points I didn't get is the same thing that you missed.

btw, you can trap the barghest and then release him and kill him. Or find the last use it can have. Though, yes, this last one prevents you from completing one major quest.

I played thru this game 3 times. The first time the pigeon worked. Second time i had the same problem you did and unfortunately i found no solution and had to start over. Third play thru the pigeon worked. The only thing really different i did on plays 1 and 3 was i used the bucket of water to get out of the castle. The 2nd run i used the vase. Not sure if that triggers the bug, but like i said i had to play over.

Okay, a few random responses...

Not being able to pick up the pigeon is a bug. Sorry about that, I'm working on a v1.2 to fix that. Since this only appears to happen in one room, you have a roughly 25% chance of encountering it. NOTE however that you don't actually need the pigeon to complete the game.

Entering the Crystal Cave from your bedroom is also a bug, but a less critical one. Just restore if it happens to you, there isn't all that much to do in your bedroom anyway.

Yes, you can get the vase out of the castle. No, this won't get you any more points.

I'm not sure how many people have realized this, but if you find the Crystal Cave puzzle annoying, there's three alternative ways of passing it.

Likewise, the apprentice in chapter 8 can be passed in three different ways, two of which require some action on your part earlier in the game.

And likewise, if for whatever reason you don't have the flute in chapter 8, there is still an alternative way.

Hello, everyone.  I'm afraid I'm a little stuck and I was hoping one of you could help me.  I have the following problem:

Spoiler
I'm in Chapter 5, and I understand I have to get the comb out of the hole in the ground by pouring water into the hole.  Unfortunately, I gave my bottle of cider to the Pookah in Chapter 1!  A walkthrough I read suggests I look on the sleeping goblin outside the village to recover my bottle, but when I do that I get the message that the goblin holds nothing of interest.  Any way for me to get my bottle back?  Alternatively, any way to get the comb out without using the bottle?

Many thanks,

Is there any logic in that?

The shop that sells matches never opened, but in the Chapter 8 tunnel, Branwyn mysteriously had some. Now I'm stuck at the apprentice. I've already used the snake object from the tower on the monster in the princess' bedroom, and I don't have any holy water. I spoke to the apprentice earlier, and got her the grass, but I can't so far talk my way past her. Am I stuck?

That's not mysterious, that's dead-end prevention :) I'm sure it would have been open earlier in your game.

I'm not sure how you got to the bedroom without dealing with the apprentice first?

(By the way, I won the game!) Hmmmm...interesting point you make.

It is my opinion that the cave is more of a novelty in the game then anything else. However, it would be cool, as a easter egg, if you could enter the cave and get captured by the dark, creepy hands of hundreds of fiends...the hero would yell,"Aiiiiii!" ... THE END.

Neat idea, eh?

And I'm stuck looking for the mirror. I tried to freeze the river with the orb (thought I could use the ice as a mirror) but it says it's not the right time.

Mr. Mozzarella-

Spoiler
You won't be able to get the girdle back I'm afraid. Fortunately it's not that important to get a good ending, you just won't get 100% score.

Spells in the tower can't be used - Maeldun is not a magic user after all. Only the snake is important inside the tower, but the books on the Pact give you an idea as to how things work, for the story later on.

Ice isn't actually very reflective :P Water, however, is.

To avoid that, simply open the game folder in your Windows explorer, and rename saved games until they're all numbered sequentially, starting from zero.

For instance, if they're 000, 001, 003, and 004, then obviously the number 002 is left out, so rename 004 to 002 and you're all set.

That will keep saved games from being overwritten? And why does it put them out of order to begin with?

Is there a limit to the number of saved games?

That will keep saved games from being overwritten? And why does it put them out of order to begin with?

Is there a limit to the number of saved games?

Doesn't anyone know? o.o;

Twenty (000-019) plus one for the autosave. Since the game has no dead ends this has not so far caused serious problems for anyone.

Go with the flow. You can't escape getting blamed. You can, however, escape, find out who the true assassin is, and confront him/her later.

The answer was not meant to be easy. The way you go about it is this: write down the names of all named and portrait'ed characters on a piece of paper. Then start crossing out everybody who either has an alibi, or lacks a motive. For instance, Morholt is clearly innocent because he'd never fit under that cloak.

Who was in the castle that night? Are you sure there wasn't anybody else there? Who of those was with somebody else? Who wants the king dead? Do you have any objects that provide clues, and if so, who do they belong to?

If done properly, you'll end up with one name.

I am fairly certain I can name everyone who was in the castle that night, but when it comes to alibis or motives, I can't seem to get it right, and therefore cant deduce who it was. But then, I'm also missing the cloth from early on in the game, and I'm NOT going to replay it all up till here. I have the note and the dagger for evidence, will that be sufficient for the queen to tell me if I got the assassin right? Unfortunately I haven't paid as much attention as I'd like to all the dialogue (I've replayed many parts and started skipping dialogues just so I'd get the sidequests done x.x) Is there a list anywhere of important dialogues and clues that have either eluded me or left my memory? Once the faerie realm is no longer accessible, it means you can't go back to talk to Blossom anymore. So the quest is no longer solvable. I assume you've already befriended the rogue? Other than that, I can't recall if there was anything else you needed to do; it has been several years since I played the game.

Thanks for that info.
What all is there to do in the sorcerer's tower?
Spoiler
You can get the snake figure and smash the orb, but is there anything else? The cabinet and wardrobe look interesting, but I can't get either of them to open.

Regarding Blossom,
Spoiler
Use the cold iron charm on Ruadh to prove he's faerie-kin, then you can go tell Blossom about that.

Regarding the sorcerer's tower?
Spoiler
There's also the brain-in-a-jar laying outside; but otherwise that's it. Smashing the crystal ball stops Taranis from harassing you with long-distance curses.

Hi, i'm currently playing deluxe edition and have problem with defeating Skullcrusher. He just kills me very fast, i have onyx, but it seems to be not of much help
do i miss sth? i thought i have to train with Branwyn first, but she's always saying it's not a time, mb later"
And I also know that i have to get the shield from smith, but he never leaves, so i just can't get it, do i have to start with earlier chapter? cuz i already have tried a hundred times to re-enter the city, but the smith doesn't want to leave his place:(
