Title: MAGS 2007-11: Parody
Post by: Klaus on Thu 01/11/2007 17:12:46
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS website (http://www.mags-competition.tk).

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This month's guidelines are set by last month's winner ThatOneChick87:

Topic: Parody

You must parody at least one Television or Film cast. The characters, not the actors.

- The game must take place on Thanksgiving Day (or any other Holiday that involves extended family coming to visit).
- At least one character must bring a weird date.
- The player character must do at least one thing that's out of character for him/her.
- A tooth must be in the inventory at least once.

That's it - no further restrictions.

Please credit the original cast to avoid copyright issues... :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All games need to be in by November 27th, 12h GMT.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

For those of us who don't live in the States, never celebrated thanksgiving, and don't know anything about the related habits and festivities - can we substitute some other holiday instead? As long as it parodizes a television or film cast?

The idea is pretty kewl, yeah the holiday is a bit of a non global one :P

The rules are now slightly different and as suggested also allow any other Holiday Holiday that involves extended family coming to visit... So go ahead :)

What does "bring a weird date" mean? I just don't understand what "date" refers to in that sentence.

Sorry, won't enter this month. I played with the thought of having El Presidente visiting his family, but it didn't quite work out past the initial jokes.  :P

Um...dating=courting.  :P

The character must bring someone who they have a romantic interest in. Girlfriend/Boyfriend.

I think that is pretty creative :)

Well it will have to be a weird date, I guess... like lets say the 29th of Feb. :P

I didn't know that the verb "bring" was the right one to be associated with the word "date" (intended as appointment with a girl). I thought the correct form was "have a date". That was the only cause of my misunderstanding.

Anyway I'm glad that my question opened a wide range of possibilities to interpret that rule.  ;D

Heh. If you "have a date", you eat one - one of the dates Radiant offered.

It's now mandatory - SOMEONE's gotta use the edible date, or it's too much of a waste.

Then again, there goes element surprise.

If you bring a date to something, it can also refer to the person you're taking with you. Noun AND verb! ...unless that's already been cleared up and I'm just being redundant.

Well. I wanted to join this MAGS because I enjoy parody, but I don't watch TV often enough to do anything meaningful with characters from a well-known show. So I guess some other time.

Well I started something based on the Adams family but after realising that I had not seen an episode for about 7 years and also I went away so alas, no game.

So, no entry so far? Too bad, it was the perfect competition theme.

I played Akatosh's last entry (Me go away), I love his humor and would be pleased to see what special date he would invent for Me.

Well I kinda had the same problem as more people here. I don't really know any series well enough enough to parody it. Only south park maybe but that isn't a very good one to use.

Yep, same here. My first choice was the Simpsons, but you can't really parody a series that's only barely serious to begin with. I suspect the same applies to South Park - you can't parody it because it parodies itself, constantly.

Hmm... who knows? Mrs. Store, probably.  ;)
/EDIT: Or a female background singer of "Stuff!" or "Guard" or something like that. Dunno. Too bad the only semi-serious TV series I know is Monk. :P

/EDIT EDIT: Now you quickstarted my creativity and it's already setting the imagination ablaze. I hope you're happy.  >:( :=

Have patience... they tend to come in at the last minute. My entry is nearly complete.

EDIT:

OK, it's here!

"ANTI-HEROES" is a parody of the TV show "Heroes".

Join Ethan Patchouli and the other Anti-heroes in his quest to save... well, you'll see when you play the game.

* The game takes place on Thanksgiving Day.
* One of the characters brings a weird date.
* See Ethan do something (or possibly two things) that's out of character for him!
* There is a tooth in the inventory.

Download link: see the listing for the game in Recently added games (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?category=101)

Like any other parody, it won't make much sense unless you've seen the original, It should still be fun to play even if you've never seen "Heroes" - it's just you won't understand the jokes.

Apologies in advance that some of the clickable areas are a bit small. I hope this doesn't put anyone off.

I did everything myself, so don't expect graphics as good as those in "Trance-Pacific". They are halfway decent, though.

Oh, and by the way, here in the UK we're just coming up to the end of the first series (episode 20 was this week), so some of the gags might look out of date to those of you who are watching the second series.

UPDATE: The download link isn't working for some unknown reason. Click on the "Visit website" link (http://www.freewebs.com/paoloags (http://www.freewebs.com/paoloags)) instead and scroll down to the bottom of the page to find a link that does work.

Well, in that case there's not that much time for voting as we only have 30 days in November. So people need to be quick then... But okay, so let's set the final deadline: November 27th, 12h GMT (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/) - that is 43 hours from now (see timestamp of this posting). I hope that's okay for all...

That's funny - it doesn't work fo me, either, but the download URL is correct: http://www.freewebs.com/paoloags/Anti-heroes.zip http://www.freewebs.com/paoloags/Anti-heroes.1.1.zip Funnily enough, though, if you click on the link I've just mentioned, it takes you to this thread. Something wrong with the AGS forums software, perhaps? Or am I doing something wrong?

You can of course download the game by going to the website.

As we're still before the deadline, I've tweaked my game slightly... the final puzzle was too much of a pixel hunt, so I've added feedback, as well as fixing a couple of bugs and typos.

Ok, Me Go Cannibal Jungle is ready (it was made in collaboration, don't be too scared).
It's based on the movie Cannibal Holocaust (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078935/) by Ruggero Deodato (and features most of its original cast: Harold Monroe (Robert Kerman), Faye Daniels (Francesca Ciardi), Jack Anders (Perry Pirkanen), Alan Yates (Carl Gabriel Yorke), and much more!).

Anti-heroes by paolo (http://mags.typo.i24.cc?page=voting&fav=Anti-heroes)

Paolo's entry was nice, with funny dialogs, and I'd especially like to salute the work he did on his characters, they really look like the actors from the series, but in lo-res! quite impressive.
Nevertheless, the narration is a bit linear, and the long dialogs make it a bit boring.

FSi's entry has a humor similar to Akatosh's one, but it's not the most important - the gameplay fits perfectly the action, the puzzles are simple but come right on time to make you feel like you are controlling what happens. And there are those weird little tunes to spice it up

I vote for FSi

Oh, sweet Yeti of Serengeti! I forgot. Dung.

I added the tooth in the v1.1 of the game (which is available by the same URL)...
It also features bloodier zombie fights, fixed easter egg and bonus level (which was inaccessible in the old version (http://misendeavour.com/files/mgcj_old.rar)). Bonus level features unlimited (if I fixed all the bugs) number of zombies to shoot, but you have to do a highly inobvious thing. Hope I intrigued you all enough.

If I'm getting disqualified for that - well, c'est la vie.

Winner this time is...
paolo with his entry Anti-heroes.
Congratulations!

FSi: Many thanks for your entry, too - and of course you're not disqualified...
paolo: Please check your PM - if you didn't do so already :)

Wow, I'm surprised. With all the effort Akatosh and FSi put into their game (bonus levels, arcade-style shoot-out, etc) I was sure they were going to win. Congratulations to them too on an impressive game.

Thank you to everyone who voted for me. Time to put on my thinking cap for December's rules.

Even without seeing the shows much (well I sorta know heroes but honestly think it's very overrated) I still enjoyed both games.  Pick something fast so I have time to make a game before I go away in mid december :P.
