Title: Damsel
Post by: Play_Pretend on Thu 25/09/2008 05:30:30
Damsel: Chapter One, by Strange Visitor Productions!

Poor Damsel...her life was so perfect back at the castle, riding her pony, brushing her hair and visiting the spa.  But now her royal princessliness has been kidnapped by the quasi-evil, fat little middle aged wizard Dorkus, and trapped high in a tower with no doors!  She's held out as long as she can, but if she doesn't escape tonight, Dorkus will force her to marry him!  What's a girl in distress to do?

Well, wait for rescue, obviously.  But when rescues go wrong, Damsels must do it for themselves!

Damsel is a short two-room comedy adventure game that took us about a month to make.  It comes in two versions, with voice and without.  The voice version (56 MB) can be downloaded from the main link, and without (13.6 MB) from the mirror link.  We recommend the voice version, as we had some really talented performers. :)  It also has a built-in hint system for the terminally perplexed, just look for the Question Mark on the in-game menu.

Download Damsel here! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1083)

Our Talented Team:

TwinMoon - Beautiful Music and Beta Testing
Windpiper - Voice Acting and Beta Testing
ElaineMc - Voice Acting and Beta Testing
Jesse Cox - Voice Acting and Beta Testing
MashPotato - Beta Testing
Jared Banta - Beta Testing

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this game happen, especially to our super-awesome voice actor and actresses, the helpful forum folks and our eagle-eyed beta testers without whom I would be quite embarrassed. :)  We'd love to hear from anybody, praise, critique, questions, anything.  Damsel will eventually be turned into a series of short chapter games, so keep an eye out for our erstwhile heroine!

Thanks for playing, and enjoy!

Congratulations ! I really enjoyed it. The graphics were simple and clean and perfect, the characters were great and so was the voice acting. The prince's voice was fantastic.
I would love to see another game starring Damsel.
Thanks for the game!

Well done, especially the voices.  Typically they detract from a freeware adventure but in this case they were quite good!

This looks really good.

I'm having trouble downloading the game however, I clicked the link here and then the main download one (for voices included), and the filefront site won't let me download the file... I get the following box:

X6
The server replies that you don't have permissions to download this file.
Details: HTTP/1.1 403 Access Forbidden

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks.

That's...really weird.  I just tried it myself right after reading your post, and it worked.  Agghh, I hope FF isn't flaking out on me.

Anyone else having this problem?  :-[

Very nice ;-)

Fine graphics, nice voice acting and a lot of humor. It's really remarkable, how much you packed into a little 2 room game. Playing time was about 15 minutes and I really enjoyed it.

Thanks for trying, seems like I'm the only one with this problem :(

I've tried it using firefox and IE and I get the same error.

EDIT: It also says on the screen

Your download has failed. You have an invalid session set. Click here to try your download again.

I don't know what invalid session set means though.

yay that was great fun! I really liked the reactions and humour. A shame it's so short. The voices were well done and funny. Graphics looked great and the music was nice.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments, we're so happy you all liked it!  ;D

Buckethead: Don't worry 'bout the shortness, we're eventually going to get Damsel in all kinds of terrible situations for heroines...kidnapped by pirates, chained to sacrifice rocks, umm...kidnapped by...other pirates...and thrown into volcanoes?  I'm sure I'll think of something by the time we get back to her. :)

Robvalue:  Were you ever able to download it?

I still can't download it no matter what I do, thanks for the advice neon, but I just keep getting that error message and no download no matter how I try to do it.

Thanks for asking though, I don't understand why I'm the only one who can't seem to get it :( Oh well.

Hey - this was good! The voices really added to the characters (The interpretation of Damsel reminded me heavily of that MTV show where rich kids are being given Landrovers for their 16th birthdays, forgot the name...). The graphics and animations were very nice, and I also liked TwinMoons music and the sound effects very much, it was all very well concerted.

And as a man who patiently sits in his seat in the cinema until everybody else is gone and his girlfriend is getting considerably nervous while he is still waiting for that special moment at the end of the movie that only he will have seen because all the other impatient not-nerds have long left - I have to say, I've been rewarded once again.

Thanks everyone for helping me to be able to play this game!

Thank you Leon that is so kind of you to do that for me, I appreciate it :)

It worked first time from that link, I look forward to playing it now!

Once I've had the chance to play it I'll let you know what I think :)

I feel I might as well chip in with my compliments about this short but fun game.

Do here goes: well done matey!

It was fairly simple but nonetheless it did make mehave to put my thinking cap on at a few moments. It was reward to put my time in it. (how much more complimentary can one get?) BTW, the talkie-voices were well done as well.

Thanks for making it! I'm looking forward to the next game in the series, keep it up!

Just finished playing, and I loved it!

It made a major impression upon me, good stuff. I loved all the voices, but especially the stuff from Jesse Cox.

Thanks for the good half hour of awesome entertainment!

Also, the music was beautiful, and perfect.

More congratulations on this brilliant and effortlessly charming game. I don't usually like one/two- room games but this was well written and thought out. I think the epilogue was my favourite part, but all of the characters and voices were great.

Not sure how many games Damsel has in her, but I'll be downloading them all as they came out.

Awesome, I loved this game, thank you :)

Definitely my favourite short game so far. I found it very funny, the voice acting was great, nice puzzles and visuals, and very entertaining.

I look forward to more from you!

What a fun little game  ;D
The dialog was funny without being too over the top and the graphics were very clean.  I also really enjoyed the intro.  Very cute.  I'd love to see more Damsel Adventures in the future.

An amazing short game. I loved it. Just got done playing it. Very Professional.

I really wasn't expecting such a gruesome ending with the dragon though. ha ha

Thank you all so much for the compliments, we really appreciate them and we're glad you're all enjoying it so much. :)

And hooray for all the uber-dedicated movie theater nerds who sit through past the end of the credits!  ;D  I was wondering if people were alt+x-ing out before they finished and missing the epilogue.  I'm also curious if people are watching Princess Logo and Prince Splot at the SV Productions screen, or using the hint file (since it was pretty easy).  :)

Thanks everybody!

I stayed till the end, but I always do on video games, not so much movies.

I had a friend at work play it who doesn't play adventure games, and he really liked it, and commented on the the logo. Since playing your kickass game he has decided to work with me on a project as well.

I also had my wife play it, she really enjoyed it too.

I personally didn't use the hint file, the only place I got stuck was

Spoiler

On the hair part, I tried to cut the rope, but the knife kept bringing up the curtains instead. Took me a couple tries to hit the spot

Other than that the other puzzles were pretty easy, but they were exceptionally entertaining, and made sense. You rewarded the player well for overcoming the hurdles you set up.

I would love this if it became an episodic thing, although that spark of creativity you guys had with this may not endure.

Thanks again!

There are pebbles along the shore, sometimes smooth and nice.

Very nice graphics, very funny voice-acting, good game overall.  When's Chapter 2 coming out?  ;)
Title: Re: Damsel
Post by: Play_Pretend on Sun 08/02/2009 12:44:28
Thanks for the compliments! :)  We're not really sure when Chapter 2 will be, but it's definitely coming.  We've been working hard on Quest to End All Quests right now, and as usual our brains are frazzled.  But I've already got some great plot ideas in my head, and the next chapter will be longer, and the puzzles not as extremely easy as they were this time. :)

I'm also going to keep my new promise to outdo Ponch in inserting gratuitously unclothed and oversexed women somewhere into my game. :)

Plus...I was going to keep this on the down-low, but it's just awesome...Al Lowe played Damsel!  I wrote him a letter a few weeks back thanking him for all his work with Sierra, and helping give me my lifelong love of adventure games.  He wrote right back, downloaded, and got stuck at the dragon hand in the window. :)  Really nice guy.  Just wanted to share that!

I thought I posted my thoughts on this game. Ah..anyway, the game is surely one of the best AGS games, probably the best AGS short game at least. It's funny, enjoyable and it has a prince fall from 7 meters.

I first read this as claiming that the voice of Damsel was played by Al Lowe. Which...  ???

The game is really fun, and the ways in which D dispatches each suitor in turn cracked me up (helped a lot by her excellent, deadpan voice actor: Good job Al!). The puzzles were quite easy and fair, the only thing was that I kept trying things before I was supposed to (like using the pepper to get the lumberjack to sneeze, stuff like that). Although the graphics aren't that impressive at first glance, once the dragon shows up it starts to look really nice, with some great animations.

I can't believe this game has been released for over a year now and I just Finally played it the other day.

I must say that I enjoyed this game immensely!  I loved all the little cut-scenes and side quests that you must complete before escaping.  I laughed quite a few times.
Voices were also excellent, also the character art.

I would love to see another game made by you SV.  Can't believe it took me this long to finally play it. :P

Especially the voice acting is quite successful. I'd love to see the future games.

About the hint system,
Spoiler
it would be better if the following Woodcutter and Dragon hints get visible only after they get on the scene. Because it is a bit spoiling to see the list of 'rescueres' at the beginning.
