Title: MAGS April: OROM (One Room One Month) (Winner Announced - See results)
Post by: Dualnames on Fri 26/03/2010 18:14:36
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS website (http://www.mags-competition.info/).

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers.

MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic. You may get help for the competition, as long as you end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it should prove hard to organize a big team within 30 days.

You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public. Modules and templates are allowed.

Please do not just enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created in just some hours)

This means that you can make a game and rush it, but don't do it to just win by default.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topic: ONE ROOM ONE MONTH

This month's guidelines were set by Dualnames:

I know it may sound silly. But keep it simple, keep it plain. We've seen best of AGS games in the OROWs, and I've always wondered, if you had to have one room, what could you make more in a month. Keep it two people team MAX!

Calin and Ben304 aren't allowed to team up! :D

Thread Rules:

1)  Comments are allowed at all times. Anyone can comment, critic and express his opinion about an entry, the MAGS, and the host's mother, without being obliged to hide it! As long as the critic isn't like "You suck", something more elaborate could be more useful because after all this is a test for all developers to see if they can really make a game within a month, therefore feedback is crucial. [/i]

2)  Participators are allowed to patch their games even while the voting but I should be informed via pm or here, and only IF the game has a serious bug that makes it crash. Due to the inability of keeping track of versions of the games, I've settled to this.

3) It would be wiser to add the game to the AGS database, so you can easily do changes to the game, while the voting is going on, without having to inform me at all.

So you can patch your game, if it crashes or if it can't be completed.

Have fun this month too!!

Winner:

Ben304 and Calin Leafshade with their game Eternally Us
You guys will set the rules for June! You will be pmed both with some instructions.

CHANGES
From the first of May, some changes will occur on the MAGS competition, hopefully for the best of developers and for the attraction of outsiders to this community.

MAGS A (January, March,May, July, September, November)

It starts on 1st and ends on 30/31st

The winner sets up the theme of the next MAGS A
Voting and playing lasts whilst MAGS B is going on. (2 weeks each)

MAGS B (February, April, June, August, October, December)

It starts on 1st and ends on 28/29/30/31st
The winner sets the theme of the next MAGS B

Voting and playing lasts whilst MAGS A is going on. (2 weeks each)

The winner of this month if not deadly obvious from this post, will set the rules of June. MAGS A and MAGS B are just a way to clarify and indicate condition of the competitions.

To sum up, there will be constantly a 30 days game making month, and a 30 days voting and playing month for that, whilst on the second process another game making month of 30 days will overlap.

Due to the great Days of No Entries, this will be confusing to all of you. The rules of May, are going to be set by a public poll. Those rules are set by me. You have one month to make a game. When May arrives, no more entries will be accepted. However partecipants and non-partecipants, will have the right to play and vote the games during the whole May. In May the rules set by the poll, or whatever we decide to set them anyway, will run another competition.

Summing up: Every month one new game making month round, one game voting month round.

It's about time you get what you deserve. I know this changes will be a little off the book, but the rules are just guidelines.

So... does this topic means, there can be literally anything, just in one room?
How large a room can be?  ::)

BTW, sorry to see what happened with March MAGS  :-\

I'm sorry but what exactly are you impliying with that roll eyes smiley? It looks rather ofensive, although you might not intend so. It's just that I've noticed you post that smiley extremely frequently.

Anyway, sorry for off topic. I like the theme and I would definitely try to enter if I wasn't so busy studying and working. It's something I've kinda always wanted to do for my first game because it doesn't require many time-consuming graphics and allows you to concentrate on puzzles which can therefore be wittier.

Hope to see some more creative entries than room escapes, though.  ;)

I'm also sorry to see how the March edition ended. I'll try to come up with a silly, simple game for April, but I can't guarantee it will really happen.

Surely not larger than two rooms.

That was exactly what I thought when I saw the topic. Could be a chance to jump in this month.

CrimsonWizard, it would look offensive to me, if you replied my post using it.  ::) (<--see?)
Perhaps it's just me, but I'd never use roll eyes unless I found something extremely stupid and tasteless....(the one posted here is meant as irony of course)
Anyway, I don't want to argue about this, especially not in a constructive topic.
(And please, you probably use that smiley more than anyone else here (but I didn't do the statistics, so I can't guarantee)).

Erm... what can I say... that's a bit weird to hear you think that smile is offensive; to me it always looked like he's smiled kindly with slight irony; besides I usually use it referring to mine own words.

What actually bothers me most is how did you know I used this smile frequently... Have you spied on me? Now I have paranoia...

Anyway, you got me intrigued, so I made some calculations.
So far I made 752 posts (1.016 per day); in these posts I used "roll eyes" smile 38 times (+/- 1, because I could miss something). That makes one "roll eyes" smile per 19,8 posts... or approximately one "roll eyes" per 19-20 days.

After all this I hope these calculations will help someone in developing a game concept for MAGS April, otherwise it was a waste of time (and offtopic)  ;)

I've never entered a MAGS before, because I'm an inflexible bastard who finds it hard to design around a set of pre-determined topics.

I've twice been part of OROW though, so I might give this one a go. :)

So yeah. Does that mean one screen? Or one AGS room which can be several screens? Or one in-world room which can be several AGS rooms? Or whichever interpretation you want?

For instance, I believe most of Nanobots takes place in one in-world room. Likewise, most of META (specifically, all of Awesmoe Quest) is one AGS crm file. Does that qualify?

I think the idea is that it can only be one 'room' in the sense that the AGS engine considers a room. So at no point can you use the player.changeroom command (except for titles and credits and stuff.)

I imagine it's just like an OROW, where the rule of One Room isn't mandatory.  The OROW rules even state you can make a game with 2 or even 3 rooms or whatever, but the general rule is to stick with 1 room so that the game will actually be made.  I imagine that's exactly what Dual is attempting here.  A loose rule of 1 room, don't go overboard.

Wasn't Alien Time Zone OROW game? It has at least 4 or 5 actual rooms. But figurally it's one same place.

If I can come up with some more puzzles and some decent art, I might just be able to enter this one. However, my computer is dead set on being a massive pile of fail, and I've got a pile of homework on my desk that keeps looking at me in a very judging way.

I'm only quoting this post. The only one worth. :D

Seriously, there have been many OROW games that had like 5 rooms, though the rooms felt like one, and viceversa. It means sticking mostly to one room. There's no restrictions for more, but don't make a game that has like 5-6 rooms. Unless of course it feels like an OROW. ATZ feels like an OROW entry for example. Man-Boy has one scrolling room, that feels like an OROW. McCarthy Chronicles 1, wouldn't feel like one for example. Featherweight, might. Shoot I Got Abducted surely! As for META, it would clarify as an OROW competition because it's all in one place.

See my point through all the examples.
To sum up:

Fair enough, although I should warn you that I probably won't have time to do a rush job.

I'd really like to do something for this month, but I'm lacking in inspiration right now, so if you won't need me, please let me know so I can look for someone else to work with.  (I'm a passable but not fancy coder as well, if someone wants me to do that, should NsMn not need me.  I'm also a good proofreader, regardless of what else I'm doing.)

I'm also interested in splitting the workload on the one room.  If anybody is interested in collaborating PM me.  I have the seed of an idea for this competition starting to germinate, but I'm open to new things depending on what someone else might bring to the table.  I'm pretty flexible in how we divide the work load (I'm a competent but not phenomenal artist, programmer and writer).

According to the new format you have four extra days, so technically you are ahead of schedule if you're already behind schedule.  :P

It'd save me a day or so, and I'd totally appreciate it if there was a screenshot along with the download link, when ones entry is ready and posted here. With the number of entries, I'm guessing, wow, it's gonna be a mess to handle.

I know it may sound silly. But keep it simple, keep it plain. We've seen best of AGS games in the OROWs, and I've always wondered, if you had to have one room, what could you make more in a month. Keep it two people team MAX!

Calin and Ben304 aren't allowed to team up! :D

How surreal it is to play football against myself. I defeated myself the first match, but then I was on my team and I won.

I have to say how much more interesting I find it to play computer football when it is with AGS forum buddies and people I know from around these parts than some boring professional player that I have never heard of, this was a really great idea! And it's also super well built and good fun, killer stuff.

However Leafshade plays football with his shirt off to impress the ladies, so the fact that his player had his jersey still on confused me a little.

Ivan, you know I was looking forward to seeing where you were going to go with Alphabeta... it's a cute intro, anyway.

1st of May 13:00 GMT Competition Closes.

If your game isn't posted:
1)Might be a mistake.
2)Calin posted his game and you decided yours isn't that good anyway
3)Forums are down.
4)CQ games are back on the game database and suddenly the competition lost interest
5)A very nice female came to your house, and you forgot you were a nerd the last semester
6)Lady GAGA releases a single
7)Fountain of Youth is released

The Seven Reasons above mean I've made a mistake, you're compensated with all the above reasons.

It's done!

Not the game I planned to make at the start of the month (uninteresting story, tell tomorrow), but rather a replacement I knocked up in a 72 hour period while listening to King Crimson albums on a continuous loop.

Dead Hand (http://shutupload.com/user/d827c85560e0830e48e67fbb59563693)

(by Limpingfish. Panorama3D Module by Steve McCrea.)

Features: First recorded use of Steve McCrea's Panorama3D module!
                Multiple nodes!
Minimal Gameplay! (Remember, kids! If it's got gameplay, it's not a LimpingFish game!)
                Redefines the word "Short"!
Throws you into the middle of a story, then pulls you out again! You learn nothing!
                31mb download!

Instructions: Hold down right mouse button and drag to rotate view. Click stuff with left mouse button!

Game is 320x240, but is setup to run with 3x filter. Bugs may abound!

Enjoy!

I going to go collapse in a corner now...play all games tomor-...Zzzzzzzzzz.

Okay, I've already fell asleep at my computer 5 times today working on this so screw it.  Here is the current playable build of

HARD SPACE:  CONQUEST OF THE GAYLIKS.

http://www.mediafire.com/?muwzjnmnwkn

This is an adventure game with ADULT themes.  This means that if you are a kiddie or scared by things like pixelized boobies, penises or strong language then simply do not play until you begin to enter puberty and discover these things are fun!

Also, I am aware of the bugs in the game so I will not respond or acknowledge bug reports at this time (so save some time and don't post them).

Eventually there will be a more polished, FULL RELEASE version of this game with all the backgrounds cleaned up, probably more animations, and all the fixes.  That will not happen today or in a week.

I have been working on this game full-tilt since April 1st so to say I am proud of what I accomplished in that time is an understatement.  You will find inside the tiny RAR quite possibly the largest game I've made yet with actual gameplay and lots and lots of fun things to do and have done to you, like:

1.  Achieve up to 6 awards or demerits depending on your gameplay style.

2. PUNCH!!

3.  SCREW!!

4.  Solve puzzles with the help of witty banter from your companions Spunk and Dr. Ramsey

5.  Try to keep the security guy alive only to see him die in some other amusing way.

6.  BOOBIES!

7.  Battles to the DEATH.

8.  Look up strange words like 'Penetrator' and 'Scatty' on your wristcom computer!

9.  Visit strange new worlds and terrorize the populace with your AMAZING technology.

10.  Generally have a lot of fun unless you're a really boring person with no sense of humor.

If you want to tell me how much you love the game, do so by PM please.  Chances are very good I will be sleeping and completely avoiding AGS for the next week to get it out of my system.

That is all.  And have fun, kids, and remember:  I made this game because I LOVE YOU.

Yes, you.

Special thanks goes to that amazing AngelicCharon not only for beta testing this albatross of a game but for putting up with my semi-coherent caffeine rants on puzzle design.  He is the reason you got to play the game today (he is also the one to blame if things don't work).

I haven't taken the time to look at any of the entries yet (besides the ones I was a part of), so this post is less commentary on everything, and more commentary on my role in this month's MAGS.

Why?  Because I can.

Anywho...I suppose in order of 'release'.

Space Pool 'Alpha'
Role: Portrait Art, Special Art, basically
Commentary:
This was a fun project to be involved with, with all the variation, and the challenge of doing a series of ports in a confined 20px x 20px space, and attempting to make them recognizable to their 'fictional counterparts'.  That said, I look forward to hearing about people beating Space Pool to see the little surprise that was tossed together. :)  Other than that, was great working with Steve, and I hope to work with him more on other projects. :)  (any questions or behind the scenes stuff, feel free to ask...I'm more than happy to share)

Hard Space
Role: Beta Testing, sounding board, all around guy of guys (so, not much)
Commentary:
Another REALLY fun project to assist on behind the scenes.  I have to say, ProgZ outdid himself with a few of these puzzles.  Very well thought out, great story, the whole kit and kaboodle.
THAT SAID!  If anything doesn't work?  You can totally blame me.  There are a number of things ProgZ is already aware of, BUT, overall?  It works.  It's great.  It's a complete experience, an enjoyable one, and one you may end up playing more than once to see different outcomes. :D

Beyond that, the other entries look good, but I haven't taken a look at them yet.  Will do so, and will comment on them.  I know for me, it'll be an interesting voting race. :D  Loads of quality.

Steve, your Space Pool game is the only one I've played so far at this moment, you've got some talent man.
I would love to have my hands on a physics module with balls like that, interacting with each other, that work on uneven terrain like a drawn region.  //hint

There were some slight issues, some you obviously know about, and some that you may not.  And just some suggestions.
-You can knock balls in by pushing opponent's ship into them, you never even need to release the ball to win a game. You shouldn't be able to hit them at all while you have the que ball.  Because you can always throw them off into a far corner before you take your shots, giving you tons of time to slowly crawl over and collect the ball.
-Your ship can still collect the que ball while flashing red and drifting.
-You can't collect the que ball if you're sitting on it once it stops moving, you have to leave it, and then return.
-Leaves a faint AA green quite often.

Great stuff.  Hopefully I'll get around to playing all entries... Dual, when does voting start and finish?

We'll be done before the new deadline though.

I would love to have my hands on a physics module with balls like that, interacting with each other, that work on uneven terrain like a drawn region.  //hint
If you want the source code, it's available here:
http://www.kweepa.com/step/ags/tech/SpacePool.zip (750KB)

Quote
-You can knock balls in by pushing opponent's ship into them, you never even need to release the ball to win a game. You shouldn't be able to hit them at all while you have the que ball.  Because you can always throw them off into a far corner before you take your shots, giving you tons of time to slowly crawl over and collect the ball.
-Your ship can still collect the que ball while flashing red and drifting.
-You can't collect the que ball if you're sitting on it once it stops moving, you have to leave it, and then return.
- Hmm, I never thought about cheating that much... I changed the behaviour so you drop the cue ball if you ram the other player (after having held the ball for more than 1 second)
- I didn't think that was too bad, but having changed the part below, it doesn't work any more. Fixed
- Yeah, again that seemed like it wasn't too bad, but several people have complained about it now, so... fixed

Thanks for your comments!

I've now had a chance to play the other entries (so far), and I must say they're top quality! Tough competition!

And here cometh Snakes of Avalon. Through this excellent download link (http://hardydev.com/Avalon/AvalonSnak.rar).

I won't say much about the game beyond that it is the work of Baron and me. And that it is a high res, animated movie quality adventure game. And that it is a must-play.

Also, consider the fact that there always happen to be snakes in rat-hole. In this particular case, Jack happens upon a particularly nasty conspiracy organized by a bunch of them. He takes an oath to give his best to stop them. Too bad then that he is a complete drunk, who has trouble discerning reality from hallucinations.

And of course it all happens on Avalon - the ancient, mythical island.

Because I am a masochist (and I love you) I worked on a few more last minute things and removed a bug that could confuse some people at the bridge (viewport not following player).  You don't 'need' to download this version to continue playing, though; all you have to do is leave the room and come back and the viewport will be fixed.  This is mainly for new players.

new link:

http://www.mediafire.com/?hz3zhzwmmit

Also, don't forget your wristcom has a search function.  Pretty much any term in the game can (or will) be explained there.  There are a few puzzles which are easier to follow when you've done your research, so be a good Captain and use search :).

Either I've accidentally modified some script, or there's a serious issue with AGS 3.2.0.99 running your game files, it just sits there with the pool table background while playing that lovely music with a blank screen until you hit a key.  Then it loads up the menu, and you can't see the enemy ship at all, even during gameplay.  Weird.

You didn't even use a bloody hotspot (I don't blame ya, I wouldn't have either)... I wouldn't know where to start to add region pixel detection.

Love the new modifications, didn't expect to see them at all - or at least this quickly.  Here's more while I'm at it:
-The funny info boxes about the opponents display too quickly for me to read without quickly skimming them - a press key to continue would be great.
-A beautiful 3.. 2.. 1.. GO! counter after the display box would also be radical.  That way you can get your bearings and have a chance at a good head start.
-You can control the direction of your ship while the opponent info box is being displayed.  Seems like cheating to me.
-Now that you've implemented the stalling ship once you've hit your opponent while having the cue ball, the computer doesn't know to avoid me now.  Or at least not the first guy, he drove right into me losing control and the ball.
-The computers seem to take off quite slowly in most cases.  I just have to hammer down on the forward thrust and ram my way to the cue ball.  Especially at the start up.
On a side note: I love that I can ram them while they're a few pixels away from the ball and cheat my way into grabbing it.  It's my favorite part of the game. :P  Especially running them into the other balls and momentarily shutting down their ship.  It adds a completely different goal and method other than to just hammer down on the throttle and get the cue ball.
-And to be super picky... the 7 ball looks like a backwards F!!  How can anyone take this game seriously now?  :=

My favorite graphical element is definitely the randomly rotating lines of exhaust.

Too bad I have to work soon, all these new games are flooding in and I am excited to play them!

Chicky - haha your entry made me chuckle ^_^

If/when you do get a programmer, make sure he uses the nice, newer versions of AGS that are way nicer to build games with ;). 2.72 is nowhere near as nice to use as the current version!

LimpingFish - Just as I expected, good writing with good graphics. I'm seriously impressed with how much story you can share over such a short period.

Loved it, good work!

Baron/Ascovel - what an incredibly surreal game. Played it, finished it and enjoyed it, even if I am not 100% sure exactly what everything was about. Definitely had the bizarre sense of humour I was expecting and it kept me amused the whole time. Really liked some of the unusual inventory ideas.

Now, I want to share something with you, friends. A tale of a man who bit off far more than he could chew with his first MAGS entry...

Myxomatomic! was a game about rabbits. Cockney rabbits. And Robots. And robotic rabbits.

It was planned as an isometric adventure, with a single large scrolling environment. Then it became a flip screen environment.

Then it quietly went to sleep.

The end.

In other news, loving everybody's games so far! :D

Transputter puzzle was never meant to be uberhard, so I apologize if it is.  However, there are some in-game hints I will pass on to you:

Spoiler
If you contact scatty over your wristcom he'll tell you he has a bad memory and to look for help in the wristcom database.  Try searching for TRANSPUTTER.  This will give you other search terms that will lead you to a very specific hint on how to fix the transputter properly :).  If that doesn't work, try starting over on the lowest difficulty setting.  When you view the diagram in the Transputter on Limp Difficulty it will show you where the axis levels should be.

I'll have a modified version of Hard Space out shortly, mainly to address problems some people have had understanding how to solve the Transputter.  The new version will hopefully make it more obvious what the process is and how to get it done.  Other fixes include dialog tweaks, added and extended dialog, bonus cutscene, and an extended intro.  This is not to be confused with the Full Release, which will have all the missing audio added, backgrounds cleaned up, and other things I didn't have time for.

Thanks, Ben!
And I'll consider making a topless figure for Leafshade (with manboobs) ;)

Nope, that's all there is. I pretty much ran out of time with it, and had to end it there. Thanks for playing, though. :)

I've added an updated version (1.1) with credits, and a reduced maximum viewing pitch (the original version was mistakenly released with the module's default setting) which essentially stops you from being able to look directly at the spot where you're "standing".

I'll most likely release a fully expanded version sometime in the future.

Okay, so both entries updated. If anyone feels its unjust that some people are updating their games please tell me, normally I wouldn't allow it unless there was a bug, but this an OROM, so bugger off, we all want cool games enhanced!

EDIT:

So here's are the entries I've played and finished:
Space Pool Alpha
Well, not finished, I'm not that good at it, but I really like it. It's impressive, it's just that I suck badly.

AGS Footballer
Great game, and great improvement over the last beta.

Snakes of Avalon

Spoiler

Dead Hand
Definitely one of the shortest games ever, yet, very nicely written, it's more of a concept thing, I'd definitely play the original hands down!!. The atmosphere and the immersion are seriously one of a kind! And I love Serial Killers! This one so far gets my vote, though not yet voted. Hope you actually make the first six chapters!! I really liked the panorama module 3d, The sounds and music are used in a very charismatic way.

Eternally Us
Very nice particle effects, reflection and all. But as I was getting attached to Amber, game ended. The puzzles are on the downhill but it's a MAGS game, so no worries there. Also, the bird puzzle, it's a bad thing figuring out what to do and expect it to randomly occur. I got that idea at least.  It'd work better as a scene, than as a puzzle. I tried to cry, but I failed. Reminds me a lot of that Winter's Shadow, which it may rock, I can't tell, but I'm kind of going to agree with ddq, the poetry doesn't accompany the game that well. Also I hoped there would be sex, because I kind of got a lot of subtext.

I'm probably hitting terribly hard on you guys, and I know you're gonna come back at me in 25th of May.
But overall it's a nice little game.

AlphaBeta
It's a shame this is unfinished.

I noticed some games didn't exactly feel OROMISH. More like FOUROROMISH. But anyway. :D

In addition, I converted the one included midi track to another format as I see not all people have sound cards that play midi.

Everyone who played Snakes, I'll be grateful if you comment on the game in the completed game thread here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=40799.0).

Slight but important fix.  Somehow one of the builds didn't compile properly and regions went wacky.  I'm not sure why.  These are now fixed, hopefully.

@LimpingFish

Dead Hand is just like you advertised it - starts as an atmospheric, great looking thriller that puts you right away in an exciting situations and then... And then after 1 minute the game is over. :( Very, very cruel!

@ProgZ

Your game is the one taking the biggest amount of my time as of now. Very cool atmosphere - Star Trek meets Leisure Suit Larry. Great music and animations (naturally) too. However, the MAGS crunch time seems to have killed some of my brain cells, and I'm progressing very very slowly.

If you're playing the original build and having trouble with the transputter you might try the latest one.  I've modified some of the information provided for it based on feedback to try and make it clearer.  I have no desire to make puzzles that 'annoy' people, so I am determined to work out some happy medium of difficulty at each difficulty level (which seems no easy task).

There seems to be no relationship between the axis and the grid. Not using the grid and just pushing blue and yellow alternately, makes the x-axis value go up and down (but not to the request value of course ;-) Besides that, I can't figure out when an axis has power or not. Should there be a circuit from a to b to set the power?

Spoiler
I've noticed the X Y and Z's on the grid, but where to put them?
[close]

So the object of the puzzle is clear, reading the grid absolutely not. And the reset after each check is also quite annoying. Any hints on how to handle the grid?

Spoiler
If you search your wristcom thoroughly for TRANSPUTTER terms, you'll soon come to TRANSPUTTER DIAGNOSTIC which explains the process for resetting a faulty system.  The circuit is, in itself, 4 different circuits in one, and the object is, for each axis, to re-order the circuit so that only the axis you are set to (of the three axes) receives power in the circuit.  There is only one arrangement per axis that will power one of them and maintain circuit integrity while disconnecting the other two (integrity means the parts of the circuit that aren't those axis points still appear to connect to each other and the edges of the circuit).  The circuit reset after each check is actually a benefit of Easy mode only as otherwise you would have to re-arrange the circuit to its original state once all 3 axis values are locked in.  This skips that step for you so all you have to do is make CIRCUIT X, CIRCUIT Y, CIRCUIT Z, then commit :).

I understand that all. I got that indeed from the wristcom and the diagram. I now know which sequence to use the objects in. But I don't understand the grid. There are 9 squares. 3x3. That's a lot of combinations to go through. I can't make any sense of the drawings on it or figure out how to make a circuit or how to get power from where to where?

I'm sure it's me but....

How come if you change nothing to the circuits, the value of X still changes?
Look at the value of X. Press blue (select X), press yellow and the value of X changes without any circuit being moved....?

Oh.. and the restore function is under the save button... (?)

[edit] I now find that there's text on the line between the green & red button (run test) and also between blue and dark green (cycle hardware) and between yellow and grey (reset). This is only on the black line and not on the colored panels itself. Intended?

You're not alone Leon, I still don't get it too. (or maybe you did now?)  I've spend 15 minutes on shifting this grid without any feedback... yes I feel that stupid ;)

Sorry Progz, I'm not smart enough for your game, even though it's very appealing. I actually feel like I'm 10 years old, don't know anything about the english language and try to solve Colonel's Bequest :D

Here, the best way to explain the method of aligning each circuit at this point is just to show you one complete circuit:

Spoiler

http:// i485.photobucket. com /albums/rr218/ProgZmax/x-circuit.gif  (remove the spaces)

Here is the completed circuit to power x (and only x) while leaving the other two axis blocks disconnected.

This should make the rest of the solution cake.  If not, I guess the game just isn't for you :\.  My testers solved it without feedback from me so I can only chalk it up to some puzzles being more difficult for some people than others.  Hopefully you'll just realize it's a lot easier than you thought.

Well then, this game isn't for me.
I still can't see how you've created a complete circuit. Where does it start? Where does it end? It should go to the lower right, right? But where should the other side be? Or should I create a closed circuit?

Damn, I hate it when I don't get it. Makes me feel stupid. >:(

[update] I think I'm beginning to see how the circuit works. What i still don't see is how the axis values are related to the circuit.

Spoiler
There is some information you get from Scatty and the wristcom (and the circuit layout) that allows you to make at least one important assumption:  The default circuit is currently powering all three axes (x,y,and z),  and the circuit must be returned to this arrangement before powering up the Transputter.  Based on that knowledge you are given the task of arranging the circuit only to power x, only to power y, and only to power z.  So you must ask yourself this question:  What are the blocks I must move to power only the x block in this circuit matrix?  Then, what must I move to power only y?  And so on, knowing that the original arrangement powers all 3.

Imagine you are viewing a small, zoomed-in cross section of a larger circuit board (if that helps).  In the example image, the y and z blocks are themselves disconnected from the rest of the circuit (blocks 3 and 4 with the disconnected wires), leaving ONLY x to receive a complete connection and full power.
[close]

In the end, it's a game and meant for fun, so there's no cause or reason to get upset (either with me or yourself).  Don't allow it to reach that point, that's the best advice I can offer.  There's no reason to play something that isn't engaging or fun for you, and I've literally made every attempt I can to accommodate the people who have had problems short of making the puzzle solve itself (an option I can, of course, add to easy mode, though I'm really against that sort of thing).  I've even taken aboard several of Steve McCrea's great suggestions to make the purpose more clear, so if the screenshot above looks different from yours (particularly the diagram!) then you might try the latest build or wait for the Full Release if that's something you want to do.

I still think some of you might be looking at the circuit and saying 'gee, this looks damn complicated' when you should be looking at it only in terms of 'what do I need to move to power only x, what do I need to move to power only y' and so on.  I'd like everyone to be able to figure this out, but also, I'm glad some people are being challenged by it.

I've explained it as best I know how, so any further questions should be directed to me via PM to keep this thread from being cluttered :).

Leon:

I think I'm beginning to see how the circuit works. What i still don't see is how the axis values are related to the circuit.
Spoiler
Short answer:  They aren't.  They are just arbitrary power levels for 'proper' operation that result from the correct circuit arrangment.  Arranging circuit x powers that axis with 7.  Also, a trick I included into the test is that, if you repeatedly toggle cycle and the number remains fixed, that's another hint that it's the correct setting.  The random numbers on retest are designed to tell you that you've got an erratic condition.  Hope this helps some!

The correct values for the axis have to be:
Spoiler
X:7, Y:5, Z:6
[close]

Also, playing in hard mode make the puzzle easier because it's not reset after each check and you can continue to 'try and error' on the same circuit.

@ProgZ: I'd change the reset after each check option to the hard mode and switch that with what's now in hard mode for above mentioned reason.

You think so?  I can do that.  I originally only had that work on easy so you wouldn't need to reset the circuit to default once you had the axis values, but if you think it's easier WITHOUT it resetting I'll do it the other way around :).

And...done.  The circuit now resets only on 'Full Blast' difficulty.  I'll be uploading the Full Release shortly with this change in effect.  Thanks, Leon!

Ben304 and Calin Leafshade with their game Eternally Us
You guys will set the rules for June! You will be pmed both with some instructions.

Congrats to all the entrants, some of the most fantastic games I've ever seen, and that's no lie. Especially on Snakes of Avalon, that lost by one vote, making the most impossible comeback ever, so cheer up.

On some note, thanks to Limping Fish, for making my favorite game of the competition. (All of you scored gold eh!)

Congrats to Ben and Calin. A nice game although not my favorite this competition. The only thing that would have made me vote for this one would be the originality in screen transitions. Other than that, the puzzles, story and music were 'more of the same' from this team. My vote would go to SpacePoolAlpha. Very original addictive game play and original use of AGS (did I say that as Adventure/Puzzle freak?).

Congratulations to all other participants for delivering such a vast number of games, I really enjoyed playing. And guess what? Extending the playtime from 4 days to 17 days still wasn't enough, but that's ProgZmax to blame ;-) Hard Space appeared really hard to finish (it still is).

Congratulations to DualNames as well for this great revival. April turned out to be a success, May is looking promising as well. But please do not extend the deadline. If 25 days weren't enough, and 31 days aren't enough, where's the end?  Deadline is deadline. If you make it, great, if not ... tough. Better luck (or organization) next time. People are already going to  count on extensions and postponing of deadlines.

Good luck to all for next competition.

I think, after considering it I would've given it to Hard Space.

It was the game that fully embodied what a classic "adventure game" is and it was pulled off in a manner that was a pretty much perfect replication of the classics.

I think it definitely would've won were it not for the transputter. (EDIT: and the blatant rule breaking)
