Wadjet Eye Games (http://www.wadjeteyegames.com) presents:
Blackwell Deception
(Blackwell #4)
The storyStreet psychics. Their blinking neon signs are everywhere, promising love and wealth and happiness. They make a fortune preying on the gullible and milking them dry. So when these victims begin dying and leaving confused spirits behind, it can only take a genuine psychic (and her wayward spirit guide) to clean up the mess.
From seedy downtown nightclubs to penthouse apartments to a luxury yacht on the Hudson River, Rosa and Joey will unearth the truth about the underground world of street psychics. Including some secrets that Joey would rather be left buried.

*Legacy and Unbound had two ghosts each, and Convergence had five.
This is great news, but shouldn't it be in the In Production forum?
I'm particularly pleased about note combining being back!
GAH. Crap you're right. Yeesh, I spend an hour crafting the perfect announcement and then post it in the wrong place. Um, moderators...? :)
The new graphic style is great ;). The backgrounds are great. INCREATOR FTW!! Generally the blend between Ben304+InCreator+the guy doing the portraits, is really nice :D Best of luck with it.
Shoot, thought it was released then :P.
Looking amazing!
Kinda glad it actually aint released yet as I have no money to spare atm :).
How much will it cost?
Blackwell: Inception!
Leonardo De BLOWIE B***H!
Great look new portraits, best of luck Dave!
COMPLETED Games Forum :P
So is the game truly already completed or is that just a... Deception? ;)
I must say it's a lot of fun to see Ben's sprites on another person's backgrounds. Like two worlds colliding.
I love how Dave spreads the art love around the talented artists from the forums!
InC getting his stuff out there!
Looks great, everyone!
This artwork is the best yet. All the best getting this 'completed' :P
Awesome! Looking forward to release!
Despite the fact that you posted your announcement in the wrong section, I am absolutely looking forward to your project's completion.
Awesome, Dynamite! Looking forward to the next chapter of Blackwell. Good luck. Great news!
Well, I'm psyched! I was under the impression that it was going to be a three game trilogy!

Well, I'm psyched! I was under the impression that it was going to be a three game trilogy!
As opposed to a four game trilogy? ;D
Yep, there are few more Blackwell games planned. I do other projects to shake things up and not drive myself crazy (like I did with ECC and Puzzle Bots, and the occasional freelance gig) but I always come back to Blackwell in the end. The series will end eventually. Just not yet. :-D
And yeesh, moderators. Get on the ball. :p
<nerdgasm>yes!</nerdgasm>
Hey, it's good to see this announced at last.
Like some other people Dave showed the early builds to, I had some misgivings about mixing Ben's artwork with the hi-res stuff the original artist (Pedro?) was doing. Fortunately, though, you and InCreator found each other and the two styles mesh very well. Congratulations to InCreator, Ben, Thomas 'The Man' Regin, 'the guy doing the portraits whose name I forgot' and Dave for putting together another solid-looking and playing Blackwell game! (even if I wasn't involved...sniffle).
Seriously, looks great and I hope it sells lots so Dave can have money for the next part of the series!
YOU GUYS RULE.
I agree, I feel a lot more comfortable with InCreator's backgrounds than mixing my really pixelly stuff with Pepe's high res stuff. Thanks for the kind words, ProgZ, it was definitely a bit intimidating stepping into the animation role after your work on Convergence. I still stand by this post (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=33233.msg480344#msg480344).
I've tried to type my excitement a few times but end up mashing the backspace and trying again so I'll just say this
:)
:D
Can't go wrong with Blackwell. This looks absolutely lovely.
Great to hear this announcement. I'm looking forward to the release.
Hopefully this will motivate me to get my projects moving faster than a snail's pace. (That and this semester at college is over in a week. :) )
Best of luck!
the title made me chill at first, but i don't think it will be a deception... for us - the players - because we will know more about Joey's past :P
I'm a total Joey fangirl! I can't wait until Blackwell Deception is available!
This is great! The graphics are amazing. True pixelart! I like it a lot!
Looks awesome. Can not wait until the next game is out.
By the way, if you haven't played the previous three games yet, now's a good time to do it. We're having a holiday sale and you can buy them all now for $9.99. (http://www.wadjeteyegames.com)

Just bought. Thanks Dave. ;D
Figured it was time and finally placed my order.
Hooray for gifts to myself! ;D
I don't like the new portrait of Rosangela. The girl looks too old and shabby. Other than that, looks good.

I think Dave is pricing all of his games $15 from now on.
Yep. Saren's got it. I price all my newer games at $14.99 and all the older ones get dropped to $9.99. Plus the occasional sale. :)

Oh wow! They look so beautiful! Visually the game continues right where #3 left. Love it!
I am such a huge fan of this series and your work in general Dave--I am literally counting the days until this one comes out. There's not too many games I can say that about. ;D
WOO-HOO!!!
I see a sprite being reused from a game that never was in screenshot numero uno!
Regardless, looks awesome. InCreator + Ben304 = awesome!!
I love the screenshots, the sprites and backgrounds are beautiful.
None of the sprites are reused from anything Dual :P
Maybe I'm just consistent ;D
Thanks for the nice comments, all!
Wow, it looks amazing ;D
Silly me, I've just recently discovered this series :-[.. I know, I know ;D, and I'm glad to see that it goes on steady to the next chapter ;D
OMG in one of your tweets you said there was going to be a romance scene in Deception.
*screams*
Lookin' good, guys! Keep it up.

For some weird reason I really like how nodespace looks different in every game. I mean, it would, wouldn't it? :)
Really looking forward to this, Dave! Keep up the good work.
Looks fantastic Dave.
Which resolution did you finally choose for the backgrounds?
It's 320x240 blown up to 640x480, so I can use high res fonts.
Now I want to draw a dancing Joey portrait. ;D
Just got the finalized promotional poster:
Looking great!
Amazing poster!! Way to go Dave! :D
Totally sweet poster! Very clean art. Also, Joey here reminds me of someone, like William Holden, but not quite. And it looks like it's going to be really dark this time, interesting!
i confirm, it's a nice poster ^_^
Looks amazing so far!!
Somewhy I thought that Blackwell is a trilogy. But now i know that it is not ;D Definitely I want to see (and play) this finished.

Lots of people always assume so, but I've never said the word trilogy anywhere. There will probably be around six, altogether.
I always assumed Convergence would be the last game (and thus the series a trilogy), simply because of its name. It sounded to me like the stories of the first two games would converge, which they kind of did, but I guess I assumed there would be more finality to it.
Not that I'm complaining. These games were awesome and I can't wait for Deception. There's a lot more life left in our Joey yet... so to speak.
I wonder if Joey's origins will get (slightly) unearthed in this one? Will there be another prequel of sorts...where you play as Rosa's grandmother? (Or at least see some of her?)
I've read your comment on the poster of The Philanthropist and I think you kind of did the same thing here. It looks great nevertheless

The poster for The Philanthropist was made a while back and this poster was made before I announced my game, so any similarities are purely coincidental.
It definitely looks great Dave.
@FamousAdventurer: Eeeever so slightly, yes. :)
BTW, an interesting change this time around is that I finally bought a legit microphone. No more accidentally blowing into headset mics! Check out Abe and Rebecca (Joey and Rosa) at the mic:

Oh sorry I didn't mean they are copied from eachother or something. I meant the comment Dave gave on the other thread. How the characters on the poster look too serious for the tone of the actual game. I think the same thing is true for the Blackwell poster here.

Good to see this project is moving along! I'm looking forward to its release.
Btw, you should put ben on doing paintovers of your backdrops. A couple of minutes of sweet ben304 love and they'll look a lot more polished color and light wise.
For those of you interested in the voiceover side of things, indiegames.com did an interview with Rebecca Whittaker (http://indiegames.com/2011/05/interview_with_rebecca_whittak.html) about her experience voicing Rosa Blackwell.
And speaking of VO, here are some voice samples from the game:
Rosa clip (http://www.davelgil.com/boe/dec/rosa_clip.mp3)
Joey clip (http://www.davelgil.com/boe/dec/joey_clip.mp3)

;D Joey cracks me up, these sound great, the actors chemistry is great, the mics were worth it.
When and if I get a job, I'm gonna save up for these mics!

Well, obviously!
Sounds great! a kickass lead cast to say the least.
Hahaha! Love it! The Voices are great, and the addition of the awesome cast picture is just downright classy. :)
The ironic thing is that Abe and Rebecca perform together all the time, but for Blackwell they have to do the VO recording separately. Still, the way those two play off each other is brilliant.
Is that Adam from mythbusters? Or he has two identities ;D
Sounds like the mic was a solid investment. Those lines are clear and you can hear the subtle inflections in their voice and tone much better now.
Thanks! I think it mostly has to do with that the actors are standing up and can really use their diaphragm to emote properly. It's especially apparently during the more "intense" dialog exchanges. With the headset mic, they'd usually sit down and speak quieter than normal to avoid peaking out!
Speaking of which, I recorded the last lines of both Joey and Rosa today. Now I just have to record... well, everybody else.
-Dave
Bit of an update. The game is fully programmed, all the backgrounds and portraits are in. 99% of the animations are done, and most of the music has been composed. Beta testers are in the midst of playing and replaying the game ad-naseum to find all the bugs, and I am dedicating this entire month to fixing them and adding voice acting. All of Joey and Rosa are recorded and imported. The rest of the cast is coming in to record over the next two weeks.
We'll be officially announcing the game, along with a release date and a trailer, on September 14th.
Hey this is Grrrreat news, it is my birthday that day! :D
looking forward to the releasing day
Did you just set a release date for your release date? :=
Anyway, I'm eager to check it out!
Quote
Did you just set a release date for your release date? :=
If it's good enough for Ubisoft, it's good enough for me. :)
I'm assuming Deception won't require a constant internet connection as part of its ludicrous DRM, like Ubisoft likes to do?
Just received the very last animation from Ben today! Importing it now. This might actually get done.
The animation is of (spoiler warning) Rosa sitting down in a chair. How's that for epic?
Now you need one of her doing the hokey cokey.
Work is progressing! The game is 100% asset complete and we're testing it ad nasuem. I keep getting about 4-5 pages of bugs every time I test, but the bugs get progressively more and more nitpicky. We're nicely ahead of schedule so I don't foresee this game getting delayed.
In the meantime, here are some preview audio clips for you:
Rosa talks to a detective named Durkin, played by our Grundislav. (http://www.davelgil.com/boe/dec/VO/BD_conv2.mp3)
Joey chats up a lady ghost in a nightclub. (http://www.davelgil.com/boe/dec/VO/BD_conv3.mp3)
Rosa learns a bit about her past from an unusual man (http://www.davelgil.com/boe/dec/VO/BD_conv4.mp3)
Good news!
Is the the ghost lady voiced by The Ivy?
Quote from: Buckethead on Thu 01/09/2011 13:47:00
Good news!
Is the the ghost lady voiced by The Ivy?
Nope. She's voice by Sarah Elmaleh (http://www.sarahelmaleh.com), who also voiced the computer in Gemini Rue.
Excited about the next chapter in the Blackwell Series. I have enjoyed everyone so far and expect the next chapter will be entertaining, also.
It's nice to hear that the project is on schedule. Alot of work go into producing quality games. I would rather sufficient time be spent working out all the bugs than having a game just thrown out there with all it problems. Thanks for all you and your teams hardwork!! I don't think enough positive praise is expressed by people today so that's why I am
expressing my. Thanks so much!!!
I'm very excited about this game too! I only played the Convergence nad some demo before that but I find they're very easy to get into and great fun.
An idea for the future- while Blackwell games obviously have their very special atmosphere and stick to certain rules set by previous installments, it'd be interesting to see a darker, scarier version of the game. Like with Batman- there were some Batman stories suitable for all ages but there were also some that pushed gore and mature themes to the limits...
I know very well now that adventure games fans aren't really after that sort of thing and commercialy it's safer not to tread on this whole "18+ games territory"... but I'm still curious what it'd look like to have Rosa and Joey in a over the top spine-tingling horror story... ;) I'd call it: Blackwell: Bleed Well.... No, that's crap. But think about it, Dave!:) (I'll do the graphics for you, right?:))
Hah. Well, Rebecca did have an interesting idea during our last recording session. (http://www.davelgil.com/boe/dec/converge.mp3)
I get what you mean, though. It's not so much that it's more popular (I mean, really, since when are old-school pixel adventure games popular anyway?), but it's a writing style that I'm more comfortable with. I could make a game more violent, I suppose, but it would just be gratuitous and there wouldn't be any real thought or technique behind it. My talents just don't lie in that area. :)
Unlike you, Grim. Your stuff scares the crap out of me.
Hullo! Sorry for the bump.
We're going to be announcing this on Wednesday and we're going to release a demo at the same time. If anyone would like to take an early crack at it, drop me a PM.

Hmmmm, I can see a pattern emerging!
Whaaa? 180mb demo? Hmmm...I guess this is some quality stuff...Anyway congratulations on finishing this, I've been waiting for ages...well since the release of "gemini rue" to be precise ;D
EDIT: I had to play it....Now I'll have to wait full month, if I want to know what happens next...thank you curiosity : (

You know, it's been waaay too long since we had a fanart contest. With this game coming out soon, it seems like a grand time to have another one.
The rules are simple: draw, paint, or sketch any character from a Wadjet Eye game, which includes "The Shivah", the "Blackwell" series, "Puzzle Bots," "Gemini Rue" or "Emerald City Confidential." Or even one of our old freeware games if you can remember back that far.
The top three winners will receive free DVD copies of the game.
The three runners up will receive free digital copies of the game.
Every other entry will receive a small consolation prize just for entering.
(If you have already pre-ordered the game and you win, you will be given a refund)
This contest starts NOW and ends on October 7th. For examples of previous entries, you can check out the Wadjet Eye fan stuff section. (http://www.wadjeteyegames.com/fanstuff.html)
Remember that nobody will leave the contest empty-handed, so send your stuff our way!

Yes.
Great! I wanted to do some fanart for a while. I really gotta take this chance! :)
I'm not going to say i'll enter because I know I promise so often to enter all these compos and never seem to manage it=(

Woohoo! Totally entered. The Blackwell games hold a special place in my heart. I'm pretty sure very nearly every game there is could be bettered by the addition of supernatural elements. ;)

Last day to get your pre-orders in. If you want to nab the DVD, now's the time to get it. :)
Wow, that's quite a good deal, and I'm not just saying it because I worked on the second game in the series!
I'm really enjoying my review copy of Blackwell Deception - I haven't played the earlier games (apart from the freeware version of the very first game), so I can't offer a comparison. Some really good puzzles, nice graphics, great music and a strong storyline. So far I'm a little disappointed with the number of inventory object puzzles, but maybe there are more of them later on.
The game will be launching in a few hours. In the meantime, the fanart contest results are HERE. (http://www.wadjeteyegames.com/forum/index.php?topic=1068.msg4985#msg4985)
