Title: @ Sawn 1: Pain is just the start!
Post by: barefoot on Sun 26/06/2011 08:11:03
V1.00

Sawn 1: Pain is just the start!

Horror / Drama.

1 room Game (my first attempt.)

You've seen the film (Saw), you know the score.

You are abducted and wake up in a dungeon with your foot clamped.

There is a religious, hooded madman on the loose who has planted a tiny explosive device in your neck!

You have just 5 minutes to remove it or else.. Boom, goodnight vienna as the tiny explosive will explode in your neck blowing you to pieces!!

A timer will show you what time you have left to remove the device.

* Can you watch if you decide to saw off your foot?
* Possibly lose a finger or 2?
* Will you enjoy digging an instrument into you neck?

Maybe you will escape, who knows, it's possible.

There are 3 possible endings.

16-bit colour and 320 x 240 resolution.

Hey Barefoot,

I just escaped, but not fully intact, I'm going to try a few others ways of going about it. I must say that I did indeed have the feel of being trapped . The clock ticking down had me leaning towards my monitor.

I just wish the hotspots were a bit larger. If you would of added some freaky music and screams it would juice up the drama.  but overall for a short game, it was fun.

Hi NickyNyce

Thanks for your comments. Yes, some extra additional audio would go down better.

EXTRA SOUND NOW ADDED.

Its only by people commenting can game creation be improved. Cheers.

I will look into increasing 'hotspot' size as I know it can be awkward at times.

Thanks again

just finished on the second attempt though

an atmospheric, little short game
enjoyed it   ;D

spoiler below
Spoiler
when you open the locked box and there are various instruments to cut your device with, I would recommend by using each of them to make an action, because you're reading: ...pick them wisely...that means you must be careful which to choose and the affect comes

Nice little short game. I don't know if there were alternate ways to end the game or if it was just linear, but if the former my only crit would be to open up the possibilities of different endings.

Spoiler
I escaped using the syringe and the scalpel, it seemed to be the most logical to me.

Edit: Some additional beta-testing would be nice as well - for instance the inventory cursor disappears when used on some hotspots but not on others. Also there were a few spelling errors, but that's minor.

the different endings depends on the combi of tools you choose

About the cursor disappearing:
During the testing rounds it did work, maybe a fix created this small issue?....Darn.
As for the spelling errors: I did not test the spelling at all.  ::)
This was a small-and-quick testjob in-between some bigger, other AGS games, testjobs.
Argggg, to many projects....

as a non native english speaker I only knew what a syringe and a scalpell is. I didn't use the syringe because it seemed illogical to me and scalpel has no use (why?). Looking up these words under timepressure isn't so cool, so I just clicked all the other options and one of them worked and I escaped. Maybe images of every surgical instrument would take away this barrier (and also look cool with dry bloodstains on them already).

Besides that this is a cool and fun little game. I really like atmospheric music and the screams you added. The bloodfountains could have been more than just a line of pixels, but cool nontheless *hrhr*

the 5 minutes are perfectly fine. I didn't do it on my first try but found out enough to make it on the second run.
btw just for fun I waited the 5 mins on the ground without sawing off the foot and the explosion moved the guy down the screen and something that looks like a bucket of paint or so appeared. Seems like this is overpainted with blood when you saw off the foot.

The whole background looks great but the where the poor guy's foot rests it looks strange. Like artifacts or cloned pixels, dunno.

so if pain is just the start I wounder if death is already next... in other words: what about a second part and lots a sequels, just like saw...

Hi Selmiak

Thank you for your comments.

Using images may well help with non-natives to better understand.

Blood fountains... in some cases a great idea.. I just used a spurt.

The explosion blows the man over and naturally he is mortally wounded and loses much flesh and bleeds heavily, hence 'bucket of paint' as you so put it. Also, if you did not saw your foot off it does come off in the explosion.

Thanks again and thank you for your comments..

maybe you could add a view/comment of the game in the games section that would be great.

cheers
