Post by: pcj on Fri 23/12/2011 02:11:26
(http://www.sqvsb.com/VSB_ReleaseAd.jpg) (http://www.sqvsb.com/download)

After 10 long years, we're pleased to announce the release of the latest Space Quest fangame, Vohaul Strikes Back.

We hope you enjoy playing it.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

On a personal note, I'd like to thank all the VSB developers for sticking through to the end, and all the beta testers for helping us polish the game.

I'm kind of impatient to get this released so I'll stop typing and let you get playing.  Enjoy!

Yoo-hoo!!! Most fangames that size die halfway in development, so thumbs up to you!

Fixed! And added an even more visible link to our forums (http://forum.sqvsb.com/).

And merry christmas to everyone from me as well!

We wouldn't have made it without AGS.

How on earth is the installer 70 megabyte smaller than the zipfile?  :P

Yeah anyway, downloading now because this looks cool. I'll be back in this thread when I've had time to play the game. Congrats on completing a game of this magnitude!

Not your fault, we just had more script changes come up than we expected.  We'll probably pick you up for the talkie version if you're still interested.

Brilliant writing and graphics (I particularly liked the "Copyright protection" part), but in my opinion the game has more of a LucasArts-ish feeling rather than Sierra-ish and Space Quest-ish. By the way, is this pie (http://www.sqvsb.com/media-gallery/detail/5/13) from the Act 5 of CMI?  ;)
Title: Re: Vohaul Strikes Back!
Post by: olzen on Sat 24/12/2011 09:14:43
I had to register an account here, so I could actually let you guys know how much I appreciate all the feedback we've gotten so far. Having been working on this since I had zits all over my face and was looking forward to SQ7, it really means a lot  that you people are enjoying it.

As for Cyrus' question, the pie is an original sprite drawn by Marty. I don't know if he deliberately went for the CMI pie-look ;) As to the feel of the game, you're probably right. Thing is - we're all huge LucasArts fans as well (I'll admit that I always preferred LucasArts' style over Sierra's), and you can definitely tell. But heck, maybe we'll see die-hard LucasArts-fans getting into "Space Quest" now ;D

Again, glad you're all having fun with the game. And don't forget to explore everything - you may find a few surprises along the way!

Having fun so far, but I've run into a couple of problems/bugs:

Roger can get stuck in place
Spoiler
on the gate screen (to the left of the Colonel's tent) rendering him able to talk to everyone on the screen but unable to move anywhere including off screen. I had to kill myself via electric fence to get out of it.

Also, the entire game froze when
Spoiler
I had Roger put on the surgical mask after entering the sewer- I had already died once because I stood in the sewer too long- the cursor changed to the wait icon after I used the mask and then the game froze.

put the air freshener in it first?

We'll check out the problem, though.

You know, I completely missed the
Spoiler
Air freshener screen, but even after I went and found it and combined that and the mask, the game still froze.

EDIT:

Success! I figured out what was going on!
Spoiler
It has to with how you have Roger put on the mask. If you put it on by clicking the mask (as the cursor) onto Roger on the main game screen, then it works just fine.

However, if you have Roger put on the mask through the inventory screen (use the hand icon on the mask) then the game will freeze (by freeze I mean the cursor will be stuck on the wait cursor, and then the game will freeze outright- except for the music which plays on- if you press the ESC key) I think it's because there's an animation for Roger putting on the mask and when you're in the inventory screen there's no Roger to animate and something happens cuz of that that stalls the game (I'm no programmer).

I've seen a plethora of fangames, and this one really stands out as one of the best ones! I was craving for some Roger Wilco adventuring and this filled me up more than a Christmas Turkey, thanks guys!

Spoiler
Got the Bad Ending, saw the Easter Egg (really cool addition guys!), currently doing the Good Ending path inside Vohaul's mind. I got 2 out of 3 doors green except for the Infancy one where he's messing with the chemicals. From what I can tell, I need to replace his Teddy Bear Mug with another one, but he notices there's no juice when I try to do it with an empty one (which I can't find anything to fill with). How can I prevent him from blowing up the house?
[close]

Here's hoping you can help out a bit. I'm ashamed to be only able to lurk here in the forums and not contribute, but that's all I can do at the moment, as I'm also making a game with a small team (not with AGS, but free and for fun only). I'm hoping I can whip up my own little game next year depending on my free time.

Regardless, I just finished the game now, fantastic job! Though the way I got stuck was pretty forgetful of me, that's the one thing I missed and yet had on my mind.

My only gripe was that I had to do quite a lot of running back and forth because some magical item suddenly decided to appear in a certain area or something suddenly started working. And there's also a few cases where you totally couldn't guess the right item to use.
Spoiler
Giving a bone to a monkey to make him accidentaly knock himself out in the middle of a guarded Camp didn't make any sense to me. Same thing for the Snowman, I'm still wondering why I couldn't just punch the damned thing, regardless of Roger being as weak as a kid yet being able to whack a snowman with a bone.
[close]

But these are just a few nitpicks, and they don't scratch any feel of awesome in this game. Thumbs up!

I think this is one of the problems with a ten-year development cycle. When something is in the game design long enough, it tends to get over-looked once the team has gotten used to it - and I think these two puzzles were some of the earliest written.

Spoiler
The General's puzzle is an interesting example since, at the time, the puzzle was formed around the idea of "hey, wouldn't it be funny to put a Space Odyssey reference here?" By the time we caught on that using film parodies to solve obscure puzzles wasn't the best of ideas, the whole boot camp was already implemented.

Our work-around was to simply drop a clue, like have the General ask for something to break the thing open instead. Even if it didn't make sense to help him (and made even less sense after the puzzle was solved), it at least changed the puzzle enough to provide a minor objective. This was one of those "we learned our lesson for next time" puzzles.

I've been working on-off on an editorial chronicling the foundation of the project, and trying to summarize the development the way I saw it. I'm hoping to have it done shortly after New Year's. The plan is to make it available as a download.

Apart from that, like Andres said, we'll probably be releasing some old sketches, scripts that didn't make the cut, etc. For now, you may be interested in this (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=2607966841837) old trailer.

Some of you may already have read that we've officially begun producing the voicepack for Vohaul Strikes Back. We have already cast a few of the characters, but with 70 speaking characters and 8000 (yes, really) lines of dialogue, we're gonna need a bigger cast for this undertaking. If you want to apply, please take a look at this thread (http://forum.sqvsb.com/viewtopic.php?f=1=1011). And of course, if you know anyone who might be interested in lending their voices, spread the word :)

Also, as music coordinator and one of the composers, it's my pleasure to let you know that you can now download the soundtrack of Vohaul Strikes Back! This ZIP-archive (http://www.sqvsb.com/extras/VSB_Soundtrack.zip) includes all the music heard in-game, along with a few surprises.

I'd be interested in doing voices, but I'm not sure if the microphone'd be up to the job (never mind my ability or probable lack thereof). I'd suggest Blackthorne as Vohaul by the way, he does a good job of it in the SQ2 remake.

Thanks for the soundtrack, by the way!
Title: Re: Space Quest: Vohaul Strikes Back!
Post by: olzen on Sun 08/01/2012 17:04:42
You could always apply for roles like computer voices and/or the Sequel Policemen. When it comes to voices that are meant to sound electronic, sub-par equipment isn't really of concern.

I agree that Blackthorne makes a good Vohaul. So far, we do have a guy on the backburner from the last time around (the guy who says "Wilco must pay!"), but he has yet to contact us. If we can't reach him, Blackthorne could very well be a likely candidate. All just speculation, though :)

And I hope you'll like the soundtrack!

Hey Blackthorne. Thanks for your interest in lending your voice to the game!

We have already cast the part as Vohaul, though - Jason Vertucio, who does the "WILCO MUST PAY!" in the intro, will be returning for our talkie. You're more than welcome to audition for other characters, though. We've still got around 60 that need to be cast, so there should be plenty to choose from if you still want to help out :D

See you around!

Thanks - I'm really busy with all the games we're working on at IA - I do the voice acting thing mostly for fun; I just thought if people wanted me to do it, I would let them know I'd be keen.  If someone's already committed to it, that's great!

Good luck; doing a voice pack is really a beast of a job, it took up the most time in production for us with SQII!

Just realised I forgot to reply to this. Well, duh. Can we pretend I was busy rather than impolite? ;)

That's fair enough - I did think you might be a bit busy at the moment. Still, don't hesitate to audition for any of the vacant roles if you should want to. And again, thanks for your offer :)

And thanks - the voicepack is definitely going to take some serious time and effort to get together! I'm personally hoping we can get it done within a year, tops, but I've always been known to be awful at predicting release dates!

Awesome :D

The game that most of the article is about, Space Quest: Incinerations, is also an AGS game and has a thread here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=45119.0

Those of you who are using a Mac can finally get a proper Mac port on our download page (http://www.sqvsb.com/download). Huge shoutout to Lunchbox who was kind enough to port this and Space Quest: Incinerations (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=45119.0) on his own accord.

I played this game again recently, and really enjoyed it.
I urge any Space Quest fan to give this a try.

Made a review & walkthrough for it on my site HERE (https://frodobaggins.wixsite.com/janitorinspace/vohaul-strikes-back)

Some easter eggs

***

1. Secret Room

Complete the chicken puzzle in the Vohaul building. Then use Eye to sign (at the right at the bottom) and you'll get some library code. Use this code and you'll be in the secret room

2. Third ending

The first ending is kill Vohaul. The second ending is rescue him. And also you can reach the third ending via clicking by broken glass (from the ship exterior location) to each character in the game. Click to each character in all locations (even if there're the same characters, but in new locations)

If you are dead after clicking by broken glass to some character, just click Restart, not Restore

In the Vohaul's brain you'll click to all three Vohauls by glass and one of them will ask you about this glass. And then you'll see third ending

(if you are lazy, there's save (https://www.mediafire.com/file/86utpnx7aifo5rw/vsb_ending3_save.rar/file) before these three Vohauls, just click to them by glass)

3. Hidden pictures in VSB wallpapers

Download wallpapers from VSB site and open it in the some photoshop and make super lightness (to see hidden pictures)

4. Never's Library

There're interesting books. Parody to Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, hintbook to SQ7 and The Guinness Book of World Records about Roger
