Title: 2034 A.C. (After Canada) [MAGS]
Post by: Ponch on Thu 31/01/2013 04:41:23
Just in time to win your hearts (and win MAGS) comes...

2034 A.C. (After Canada)

This MAGS game follows the adventures of Paige Rowsdower, the newest member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as she tries to maintain law and order in a world that is collapsing into chaos and anarchy. Of course, since this game is set in Canada, the apocalypse is very well-mannered and polite.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Baron and Ryan Timothy, I am 100% confident that this game represents Canada perfectly, right down the smallest detail. My thanks go out to them for filling me in on all the subtleties of life in The Great White North. Thanks also to Ghost, who pitched in with some last minute playtesting after Baron's little boy came down with a bad case of moose flu. Since Ghost is German, I can only assume he was even more baffled by Canada than I was before Ryan and Baron held my hand and walked me through the cultural snowdrifts that divided our great nations.

Jokes, donuts, beer, hockey, and snow. It's as close as you can get to being in Canada without actually going there! Beauty, eh? (http://www.barnrunner.com/pics/misc/Roger_Canada.png)

Download now, eh? (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1646/)

Yay, I've never been to Canada, but after this game maybe I'll feel almost like I have!  Congrats on the release Ponch.  I'm always impressed that people manage to actually get a complete game finished so quickly for MAGS.

MiteWiseacreLives!: Thanks, buddy. It's a beauty game, eh? And it's one of the few MAGS games I ever managed to finish. :)

CaptainD: If you play this game, you won't need to go to Canada. That's how incredibly accurate it is. But don't thank me, thank Baron and Ryan Timothy.  ;-D

Can't wait to bust out a keg of Elsinore beer and try out this beauty game, eh? Hosers got me working like a dog this week, but once the weekend hits I'll be playing for sure.

Thanks for, ya know, putting the spirit of Strange Brew into an adventure game, eh? It's about time someone did!

Thanks, guys (and gals). When MAGS is over, I plan to release a slightly tweaked and improved version of this game. It will be so like the real Canada that if you press your nose against your monitor, you should be able to catch a faint whiff of maple syrup.

But don't lick your monitor, cause your tongue will get stuck to it.. and all the other kids on the playground won't help you... they'll just tease.

Even though I like it so far (the style is pretty cool and I'm learning a lot about Canada), I can't get pass that crowd. I won't say I've tried everything...but I've tried everything.

EDIT: finished now, very meta game. Now I want to go to Canada even more. The puzzle I was stuck on really broke me, I just...it has nothing to do with gameplay
Spoiler
I understand the trick, but even if the igloo is round, if there's a line crossing it...this is some Sierra/rubber ducky mental stuff

Well, I made it past the crowd, talked with everybody there, got a cap and my free coffe, but don't know what to do now. And I can't just leave because nothing is happening besides the hockey game.

And yeah, the game is beautiful, eh. I've never been to Canada but now I feel like I've lived there my entire life.

I'm now stuck in the cave near the well placed rocks. Help!

Spoiler
The igloo is a circle. To get to the guy on the right side of the screen, just walk off the left side of the screen and Paige will loop around to the other side.

Selmiak:
Spoiler
Outside Tim Horton's, you may notice an unusual dog in the parking lot. Take a closer look at him and maybe Paige will have something to say. There's a clue on how to proceed in her dialog.

Spoiler
It's too dark to see anything in the cave. You need to start a campfire. Perhaps you have something to burn, eh?

And thanks to all the rest of you. I was hoping this game would be well-received so that I would have an excuse to do a proper, larger game with Paige and her friends.  :)

Oh dear. I was afraid this would happen. You see, this is the first L/R Click game I've ever made. I prefer the Sierra style GUI bar for my games, but thought I would try something different with this one. And like an idiot, rather than use a module I decided to code up my own from scratch. It seems to work fine for characters and objects, but it doesn't always want to process clicks on hotspots. I'll take another pass at this weekend and see if I can fix it. But in the meantime...
Spoiler
Use the cigarettes on the rocks. Use them several times if necessary until it "clicks.'

Sorry about my lousy coding.  :undecided:

Actually, I'm calling it "The Good, The Bad, and The Nutters" and I just started work on it today. (Okay, it only exists in my head and as a few sketches on the back of a Jack In The Box tray liner, but that still counts, right?)

Thanks. It's not easy to stand out in a crowd like that, but I'm happy to know I did.

I completed and enjoyed this game. As a Canadian (I've lived in Toronto my whole life, and spent signficant time in 7 other provinces over the years) I might have a bit of a different perspective :)

I am not clear what the MAGS theme was that this game was created for. If you can clarify that, I will post my comments when I get a chance.

Allow me to apologize right now for any offense you may have taken.  :=

I am not clear what the MAGS theme was that this game was created for. If you can clarify that, I will post my comments when I get a chance.
The theme was "post apocalyptic." When the theme was announced, I wanted to approach it from a "why does the apocalypse have to be bad?" angle. I quickly settled on Canada as the setting because a) I've been to Canada many times (and was even briefly stationed there a couple of times back in the 90s) so I know a little bit about it, and b) If any people could deal with the apocalypse in a way that make it seem a trifle at best, it would be you Canucks.

I look forward to reading your opinions on my little game.

Post by: Shadow1000 on Sun 03/02/2013 01:44:28
Thanks for the explanation of the theme. No offense taken; I'm sure that players realize that the "Canadian" flavour of the game was more in the theme of Bob and Doug MacKenzie humour and have little reflection of Canada (other than the prevalence of Tim Horton's...lol)

Anyway, my thoughts:

- The game certainly meets the theme, so you get points there!
- The idea of the game was for some wacky humour "Canadian" style, so you get more points for that. I had a lot of good laughs and I think that was the idea :)
- The puzzles were funny and clever and not too difficult. The graphics and sound effects were simple and adequate.
- Cute and simple plot

One comment on a puzzle that many people had trouble with:
Spoiler
I understand why people don't inuitively think of an igloo being round and solving the puzzle that way, but when I found myself facing that puzzle I thought "hmm...what happens when I go left?" Which I think should be a reasonable expectation for any player. The result was a good laugh :)
[close]

Areas to improve:
- I have trouble with games that have seemingly endless dialogue that doesn't contribute to the gameplay or plot. I have even bigger trouble with games with said dialogue where a hint required to proceed is buried in endless talking. The jokes were good, I give you that, but this is something I would rather see more limited. I recently stopped playing and deleted two games just for endless, drivel, silly dialogue.
- The
Spoiler
car at the bottom of the lake
[close]
puzzle was a real minus to me. If a game is over, it should be clear that it's over. If it's not, then some action other than clicking endless dialogue (see previous) choices and letting the character do all the work should make it clear that you're still playing. This was confusing and I had trouble being patient for this part of the game.
- To polish the game a bit more: consider adding sound effects other than "room" effects and music. Also, a user interface for loading and saving the game, inventory access and so on would have been better than expecting the user to know what keyboard buttons to use.

My conclusion is that the game was overall enjoyable and some out of the box thinking for the puzzles with the Canadian twist make this game worth playing!

Looking forward to the sequel :)

I admit the game is talky. All my games are and this one is particularly so. In my defense, time ran out and there wasn't any time to really look at what worked and what needed editing. The few times towards the end when Paige says "oh no! only two days left until the deadline" (or whatever the lines were), that's no exaggeration. The game ran right down to the wire. The two caves at the end were never even tested by Ghost or Baron because I literally finished those rooms and the rest of the game the night before the MAGS deadline (got up at 5 am to compile the game and have it ready to upload when I got home from work that night). Heck, I've got almost a dozen Prime Minister Justin Beiber sprites that I wasn't able to use because two side quests had to be cut.  :-[

I'm glad you liked the rest of the game though. I think that the development time frame for the sequel should leave me plenty of time to tweak it to play a little more tightly (and put those Beiber sprites to use).  (nod)

Just finished the game.  Loved it!

Lots of humour and good puzzles.  One part I specially loved is...

Spoiler
When Paige's car sunk, and she was stuck in the bottom of the ocean.  She put on the headlights, and saw the big seamonster.  Then she was giving us commentary on how she was combining items to get another item, and she's made advancements doing it herself, instead of getting the player to do it.  That really made me laugh!

And the comments Paige made about the deadline drawing near... I could almost hear poor Ponch panicking.

Excellent work Ponch!   :=

Really enjoyed it, even though there was this pixelhunt and the veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery long texting under water. But the text got better and funnier over time, but still a lot to read and not that interactive. I prefer interactivity over selfaware puzzle solving. ;)

Off to the rating page! I guess lenght is 30m+ even if you don't read everything?! edit: okay, MAGS Game is a game lenght option >_>

Why does paige always bend down backwards? Why not show her other side? Would have been easy bonus (bribe) point for a mags vote...

Yeah. It was a bit chatty down at the bottom of Lake Champlain, I'll admit. If I'd had a few more days, I would have tightened that puzzle up a bit. But I still think the idea of it was clever, even if I slipped in execution.  :undecided:

And Paige wasn't going to bend over facing the other direction. MAGS votes are less important than a Mountie's dignity, buddy.

Glad you liked the game.

Oh I see, it was planned to be a puzzle but you really cut it due to time restrainst. At first I thought it was just a funny crazy thing you made up. So will it be in the polished version of the game? As funny and groundbreaking as selfaware puzzle solving is, actually solving THIS puzzle will make it better I guess. Not that it will suprise me anymore now, but people not playing MAGS games and only playing the polished version should be puzzled. Now I see why MAGS game is a gamelenght entry of its own for the ratings...
Title: Re: 2034 A.C. (After Canada) [MAGS]
Post by: Ponch on Thu 07/02/2013 19:31:49
Whoops. I wasn't clear, was I?  The idea was to have a simple "combine inventory" puzzle common to every adventure game, but with the twist of having the player separated from the character, so you'd would have to talk her through it -- which would be a novel experience for both her and you. When I doodled the puzzle out on paper at the start of development, you were going to talk her through it over the radio back at Mountie HQ.

So the puzzle is what I intended it to be, but it's too wordy. If I'd had more time, I would have streamlined the dialog tree (probably by removing most of the non-essential options) and worked to make the puzzle shorter overall.

So, yes, it is a "funny thing I made up", but it could have been done better.  :sealed:

As someone who resided briefly in Canada, it's totally worth the flies because Canada produces stuff like this: Bacon Flavored Beer (http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/sunnews/business/archives/2013/02/20130207-103352.html)

Easily confuddled. That's your problem, sir. That and all the beer and staying up all night on the interwebs when you should be resting up for another day of work. Those people in the hospital are counting on you, Ghost. And you're showing up hung over and trying to make everyone believe it's "teh diabeetus". You're not fooling anyone, sir.  (wrong)

I wish I could, eh? Unlike 2034 A.C., with it's simple sprites, all the art in Barn Runner is hand drawn. I literally draw each and every frame of a walkcycle on paper with a pen and then scan it in to turn them into sprites. Drawing and scanning all those actors and backgrounds is very time consuming. I wish I could turn out the Barn Runner games this fast, but I haven't found the trick to it yet.  :P

Anyhooo, thanks for playing After Canada, Airborne. I'm glad you liked it.  ;-D

You're IN Canada?!? 8-0 You lucky duck! Quick! Go to Tim Horton's for a donut! Then wash it down with some coffee from Second Cup! Then grab a burger at Harvey's for lunch! Then go to a hockey game to watch a good fight. Ooh! I'm so jealous!  (laugh)

I hope you like the game (and the nation), eh?

Hey Ponch, I'm sorry for playing your game only now, lots to do and little time, you know how it is!
First impressions are great, I've never been to Canada and probably never will but it does feel like I'm there. I can picture what I'm reading with a Canadian accent because I deal with Canadian customers from time to time where I work, so next time I'll meet them I'll have a inner smile!
Anyway, the game is pretty cool and you've found a lead protagonist capable of rivalling with your own best creations.

Take care, buddy!

Canada is always cool, eh? Just ask our resident Canadians, Baron and Ryan Timothy. Well, you could ask them if Canadian Summer hadn't already come and gone (July 1st through July 2nd), and now they're back inside their cozy igloos, buried all snug-a-bug under three meters of snow. Ah, the light snowfalls of July. So much better than the onrushing glaciers that come tearing into town around November or so.

Anyhoo, thanks for playing my game, buddy. Glad you liked it and I hope you like the sequel coming out later this year. Beauty, eh? (http://www.barnrunner.com/pics/misc/Roger_Canada.png)

I played your game a little to get a vague idea as to how is the game. Its good. I will play it soon enough. However, this is the one thing which made me comment here:

Spoiler
Your game very well shows that you don't have to draw all the animations for your character. I loved the way she just "floated". If I run out of time for OROW, I'll just take a leaf out of your book and follow your style. I liked your style :) and due to this: I hate you!  (laugh)

I played this a few months back, and as a Canadian, really enjoyed it. I haven't heard "Tripod" being used as an insult since the early 90s. :)

Most everything I know about Canada I learned from Bob and Doug in the 80s and a few personal forays into the Great White North (mostly in the 90s). Tripod is one of my favorite "Canadianisms" ("Knob" takes the top spot, of course).

I'm pleased you liked my game. As a Canadian, you have a special understanding of how closely I was able to capture the "Canadian Experience," eh buddy? Yah. Beauty.

And as a Canadian, I hope you appreciate your unique position in the world: You don't have to get your Timmies through the mail, like I do.
Pictured: It costs almost twelve dollars to get this mailed to me last week.

However, you do have to drink milk from poly bags. So I guess being Canadian has it's down side too, eh? :=

Really? I thought I saw some the last time I was there. But it's been a while. I'd hate to think Canada had forsaken one of their most quirky traits. :undecided:

I've never been to B.C., but that's probably why Mite hasn't seen it since he was a child, since it's likely very Americanized over there. Poly bags are so much better for the environment than giant thick plastic jugs.

Do you actually order in Timmies coffee? I actually prefer McDonald's coffee now that they started selling it and trying to compete with Tim's.

And I badly need to finish playing this game. I got pretty far with it but never got around to completing it. So far it's quite hilarious.

Hmmm... A plot hook is developing in the back of my mind...

QuoteDo you actually order in Timmies coffee? I actually prefer McDonald's coffee now that they started selling it and trying to compete with Tim's.
Heck yes I did! Here in El Paso, Timmies coffee is like something delightful and exotic brought back by Marco Polo or something. A Canadian dude sent me a ten dollar Tim Horton's gift card after playing this game. How could I resist ordering some (mostly) free coffee with it? :cheesy:

QuoteAnd I badly need to finish playing this game. I got pretty far with it but never got around to completing it. So far it's quite hilarious.
Since you're listed as a playtester for this game, I'd agree that it's probably past time you finished it. :=

Now that I think of it, I can remember when we were fazing out milk in bags at the grocery store. Customers were totally angry, Canadian angry not normal angry. The coffee was a very wise decision, I don't think Timbits would travel as safely (neither the doughnuts nor the little kids).

I recall Twelve Beers of Christmas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32CwrOZVobo) was a holiday classic when I was younger. :) At any rate, I did notice quite the homage in your game.

QuoteI haven t seen milk in a bag since I was a kid...

I'm on the bagged milk right now. When I got my first apartment, the milk bag container (http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lpozx8kqUP1qblfnr.jpg) was up there along with other essentials, like a can opener.
