Title: Sleuth
Post by: monkey424 on Sun 07/04/2013 11:28:08
PRESENTING..

Forget Holmes.

Forget Poirot.

And forget that Davenport (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=50908.0) character in Slasher's game.

Detective Daniel Wilkins is the man for the job!

Based on the original 1983 text-based "whodunit" game of the same title, this is my version, only with prettier graphics, and some adventure game elements.

I dabbled with this game over a decade ago with AGS 2.07. And now it's time to revive this RAM Ghost!

For now, however, the game will have to go on the back burner since another project will take priority - the birth of my daughter - due towards the end of this month!

Game is currently on middle burner and bubbling with potential.

Congrats on the kid.

However, please do have a read of the Forum Rules.  The game must be "in production" to be posted in the Games in Production board and it requires two "in game" screenshots (menu/title/option screens do not count).  Please let me know (via PM) when you are 1) Working on the game again and 2) You have the two necessary screenshots.  Then we can unlock this.

Unlocked.

I'm currently stuck in a foreign country that has no YouTube or anything comprehensible on local TV for about a month so I have no excuse not to work on this game. Progress has been harsh but fair. Anticipate release early next year.  :)

Wow! Hard to believe a year has nearly passed since my last post on this game. I can tell everyone is just speechless with anticipation. And the game is still not finished!

Here's my humble explanation..

Sometime between the last post and now I decided to pimp up my game with some solid voice acting. I've now got about half the AGS community on board!

Here's a snippet of what we've been up to..

[embed=425,349]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DQ610sDI64[/embed]

I've also engaged a talented musician to do all my music. As we speak my colleague is working at a furious pace to produce the tunes that I anticipate will be finished sometime before Christmas*

The stats:

Graphics: 98%
Dialogue: 98%
Scripting: 90%
Voices: 50%
Music: 5%

First post in this thread updated too.

:)  :)  :)

* 2015.. maybe.

Looking great, Monkey.  Love the screenshots and YouTube trailer.
Looking forward to playing it - and glad I could contribute to it.

I like the look of this, enjoyed the trailer. One small thing I noticed at 12 seconds in, shouldn't it be Committed not Comitted?

Thanks for the support guys! I love you all!

And thanks Dadalus for your nitpicky spelling suggestion (roll) - I've fixed it now!

Furthermore, this project milestone calls for a new avatar..

Any game that starts with "On a dark and stormy night." has my vote (laugh)

Good luck monkey424  ;)

Hi folks. I was reminded of this old unfinished game after playing a bit of Day of the Tentacle with my daughter recently (the style is somewhat similar). I wasn't sure if I'd ever get round to working on it again and I'm sorry it has taken this long but I'm happy to announce I will work on it once again. I owe it to myself and to all the awesome people who helped voice the characters.

There's now just a handful of characters who still need a voice. Plus I need music. Please see this recruitment thread if interested --> HERE (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=57529.0)

Here's the game promo again. This is 5 years old now which seems old but considering the original graphics for the game date back almost 20 years it's not that old!

Is this based on the text-adventure game called "Sleuth" that has randomized elements?
Or is this based on a completely different game called "Sleuth"?

It's based on the 1983 text-adventure of the same title with randomized elements. Six characters will be randomly selected for each new game.

Yes, for now. It will be overshadowed when Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw makes a comeback. I reckon any decade now..

I've thought about the voice acting I did sometimes and was disappointed nothing came of it. Glad to see the project back on!

Yeah I know man. You did some great voice acting and it would've been a shame for it to go to waste. But now I seem to have got my second wind and some more collaborators on board so it looks like game has a good chance of being completed!

Ok guys, some exciting new game stats:

Music: 100%
Dialogue & voices: 99%
Graphics: 99%
Scripting: 95%

Thanks to all those who recently contributed to the voices. Also huge thanks to Vincent Olmsted aka CometMorehouse (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=14979) for composing music. It sounds awesome!

Slowly getting there. Just chipping away bit by bit whenever I get the chance.

ETA sometime this year hopefully!  :)

Duke Nukem Forever: development commenced in 1997, completed in 2011
Sleuth: "Hold my Big Blue Cup..." ;)

But that's actually inspiring! Just like your invitation to voice another character made me dust off my mic and do some voicework again, maybe one of these days I'll excavate one of those latent ideas and make a new game.

In any case, looking forward to some sleuthing!

Ok guys, some exciting new game stats:

Music: 100%
Dialogue & voices: 99.9% (still need to tweak volume here and there)
Graphics: 99.9% (touch-ups here and there)
Scripting: 99%

Thanks to all those who have got in touch recently re credits.

I'm really just at the 'bells & whistles' stage. I actually revisited the source material (the original 1983 Sleuth via a Let's Play vid) for inspiration and recalled you got a 'Sleuth ranking' once you'd successfully completed a game. Here's my proposed rankings in order of competency:

Can anyone suggest a category between 'incompetent' and 'rookie' ?

Stumbling?

'Bumbling' sounds funnier. 'Sloppy' seemed appropriate too. See competency matrix below. Ranking is based on objectives achieved, or if everything is achieved then the number of moves (room changes) to complete the game.

Cheers Adeel. Yep, it's nearly done, thank fuck! I just remembered you and a few others auditioned for the game (somewhat reluctantly) but unfortunately didn't quite make the cut. There's one audition I recall being particularly terrible / hilarious (local gal Resulka (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=12526)) and yours I'm happy to say was only second-most terrible. I need to acknowledge you guys and gals in the game somehow.. I'll have a think about it!

Well, I don't know what your standards are exactly if my performances made the cut :P I will forever be equally puzzled as I am nostalgic, voicing Nick being the starting point of my splendid career in VO ;)

Nice to see this game moving forward.  (nod)

Just a nit pick or suggestion.
Maybe instead of calling the player "Incompetent" you could use "Sleeping"? That way you avoid someone getting annoyed at having played your game and get "rewarded" with an insult. Also it would give a nicer progression from sleeping to bumbling (cause you not quite awake yet ;) ) .

Anyway, your game.  :-D
Hope you reach the finish line soon.

Post by: monkey424 on Thu 01/10/2020 08:53:11
Thanks Cassiebsg - I've used 'Sleeping' rather than 'Incompetent' - less harsh!

Crikey! It's been a month since I last posted! Don't worry folks - I've been busy! I made a simulator of my game to generate some statistics on outcomes (see screenshot). Since the game uses randomised elements the outcome (total moves) is part luck and part strategy falling within a normal distribution. The simulator was also useful for general testing. It would have been a shame to make this and discard it so I've included it as a sort of 'Easter Egg' in the game together with another Easter Egg inside that one. Anticipate game release sometime this month!

Glad to hear this is still being worked on.
I remember when I first encountered the original Sleuth. It looked and sounded brilliant. But it's age certainly didn't do it any favours in terms of playability.
Your remake sounds like it's going to fix everything wrong with the original.  :-D

FYI.. I'm releasing this game tomorrow! Just in time for Xmas!

Just been polishing / ironing out all the kinks recently and have done a bunch of test runs with my daughter who seems to approve.
