I loved this.  Even though this was in the mid '00s, it felt like it was from the mid '90s.

So I'm currently listening to this:

That song rocks so hard.  I'd love to hear a great band do like a 7+ minute version of it.  The outro music is also one of my favorites from the show.  Such great music in this old cartoon.

Fired this up just now. These are buddies of mine, semi-famous I guess. They did open for AC/DC a few years ago so that's quite an achievement :D I had a few band projects with the drummer back in the days

And that lead me to this good ol' classic. The baddest asses of rock n roll :D I never get tired of the guitar riff that begins at about 0:35 No matter how many times I listen to this song, I never get tired of that riff :D

Lots of great tracks listed in here.  Thanks for sharing!

As for me, I recently got a new vehicle, and now I have access to a functioning CD player while I drive.  I also have AUX capabilities, but I found some old CD books while moving and have been going through them.  They are mostly mixed CDs I made myself, but I've been revisiting a lot of old memories through them.  I recently listened to this track:

That song reminded me of another from a fantastic movie I watched recently, so I listened to that as well:

Then there's his recent efforts at making actual songs:

It's pretty good, even if it feels a bit too contemporary to my ears. I don't need every song to sound like an imitation Hosier. I suppose this is why I've gone off of indie-folk a bit (there's so many bands that sound completely indistinguishable).

As for what I'm listening to ATM:

man n fist, sure love him, I only discovered him a couple of years ago. I used to listen to a 60/70s lounge online radio station, and now and again they would play a walter wanderley track... I instantly loved his cheesy style, like elevator / super market music, lol.. its all a bit cheesy but i love it. Anyway since listening to that radio station I have searched into other stuff from him so my appreciation for him as grown.  I do listen to all types of other music though of course :)

Hi! Is this thread still open?

Lately I've been obsessed with this guy, who goes by King Krule, Zoo Kid, Archy Marshall and who knows how many more monikers. He's only 24 years old, he published his first album when he was 19, and his music is... how would I describe this... lo-fi late night croony jazz-blues with breakbeats and "chopped and screwed"-type hip hop beats. The embedded video is easily one of his most conventional songs, but the album The OOZ as a whole (and it is one of those albums that needs to be listened to as a whole) is just mind-blowingly weird, personal, experimental and unique. If this is what gen Z kids are bringing to the table, I'm SO in!

Snarl at everybody around me? Hahaha I don't know, that's a weird question! Same things I do when listening to other kinds of music, I guess... Browsing / reading stuff on the internet, working at the office, working out sometimes... It's not necessarily "angry music" for me, I just enjoy the sheer intensity of it (and in some cases, of course, also the actual musicianship, production, etc... those are the albums I enjoy listening to the most on my Good Headphones (tm) while taking a walk with no destination in mind or lying on the couch staring at the ceiling :))

Not really, no. Those keyboards and the generally "epic" feel of their music never quite clicked with me... In general I prefer my black metal either rougher around the edges, like Darkthrone or Mayhem, or way more experimental and twisted like Dodecahedron or early Blut Aus Nord. Emperor are, like, too mainstream, man

Spotify is throwing random songs at me at the moment, based on my listening habits. And it's a fairly terrible algorithm, if I'm being honest. It's either songs that I listen to regularly (so why recommend them?), or songs that have the most tenuous of links to what I currently jive to. Bleh!

Anyway, at the moment it's...The Four Horsemen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVExlaxaweo) by Aphrodite's Child.

Jack just embedding the video from your comment. Yeah I love this track too! Jarvis Cocker's lyrics are also always very clever:
This is a great track.

What I'm currently listening to:

Floor Baba - Neon Death

Cool one, dact. Loosely reminds me a bit of this new age music my parents used to listen to when I was a kid (I know some may find this horribly overproduced, but I can't help feeling nostalgic for it! (laugh) ):

@notarobotyet do you like Emperor?

I get this feeling you could talk emphatically and at length about the nuances of black metal, which I have to say wins my award for most original skill of 2019.  :-D

^That's a love ballad compared to the earlier track you posted. (laugh) For sure it's music but definitely pushing towards the border of "wait a sec is this actually noise?" Makes the listener explore some new emotions/headspace.

Alice Glass' stuff is not quite to that extreme but perhaps leaning in the direction:

Hehehe if you looped the first 4 seconds of that last song you posted, you might have something I'd be interested in. I used to be into noise, powerviolence and death industrial when I was a goth who didn't want to be called a goth so I got into the most extreme sub-scene I could find :-D I got out of there because it was so full of nazis, though... kind of like black metal but even more obvious because these dudes would straight up come out on stage dressed in uniform :-X It was super gross (and the "music" wasn't that amazing tbh, most of it was ooooo look at meeee shock valueeee I have a bunch of WWII samples and a distooooortion peeeedal oooooo) and once I realized that it was pretty much a breeding ground for white supremacists and incels (what did we even call them back then? "Pathetic inbred losers"?), I was like I'm sooo outta here.

Sigh... we'll never be young again.

^The interesting thing about this 'music' is it really does stir (at least in me) emotions and and feelings of horror, disorientation and helplessness, which I'm guessing is what the band was going after. Perhaps these are emotions incels and other types experience in day-to-day life when they engage contemporary society? (Not to get into it, but it is kind of an interesting discussion point.)

That's crazy about your sub-scene experiences! I thought that sort of death-metal-extreme-right hybrid culture was more Hollywood constructed than anything.

I think it was more just... straight up the aesthetics and the lyrics? Most of these "bands" were just a guy or two in a suit or a uniform bashing a keyboard or a kettle drum while shouting about how everybody was a sheep except THEM and how THEY were the chosen ones and everybody else was barely sentient zombies except THEM. I think all that crap they were being sold about being part of a very special "elite" is what brought a huge majority of them in, reinforced by extremely limited and hand-numbered album editions and the like, which added to the "kult" aspect of it all and is something that a very specific subtype of dudes just LOVES (laugh)

Anyway, enough darkness and weirdness and noise, I'm going to finish this off with the super relaxing and soothing (for real) stuff I use for scripting/coding/level design/asking stupid technical questions on them here forums  :)

Neo-nazis. They're LARPers. I always wonder about these people who adopt an image that would make them look tough, obviously they themselves feel they are not tough enough, what is everyone else supposed to think? Guess they expect others to put as little thought into their life choices as they did.

Must have missed this one with the page change. Yeah, there's a certain kind of hilarious irony in seeing people like these claiming to be all unique enlightened individuals and totally not a bunch of sheep and then going around all dressed the same (as in, literally in uniform), licking their favourite artists' boots and trying to convince everyone that they had read "Revolt Against the Modern World" back-to-back (roll)

I wonder what's become of them... I recently came across a girl online I used to know back in the day who was SO into Aryan rethoric that she actually married a German guy and moved to Munich. She's now a devoted housewife, lmao, sorry not sorry for the schadenfreude (laugh)

Not true.  They'd still be dependant on the other wage, but they don't have to do any of the slaving. Being a stay at home parent is actually the only occupation I can think of where all your effort is going towards your own family. Even if you own a business, you have customers to please.

My expectations were pretty low because I wasn't too fond of 10,000 Days to start with and I wasn't expecting them to come up with anything super exciting after a 13 year hiatus, but I have to say that I'm impressed! The album is an 80-minute monster with all tracks except for a crappy instrumental clocking in at over 10 minutes (plus some interludes that are missing from the leaked version), so I still have to listen to it a few more times for more things to stick, but I can definitely say I'm hooked. Well worth the wait! :)

Their sound is unmistakable. Yeah that new track is pretty cool. Glad to see Keenan is off his wine tangent. (kidding) (laugh)

I revisited Aenema a few months back. That's a really terrific album. I've always felt a connection with the title track, its range of emotions, and lyrics, which at one point are laugh out loud funny. If I remember correctly, the song is a full hate-fest on Los Angeles and references an urban legend where the tides rise and swallow all of South California, creating 'Arizona Bay':

"One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied

Justified bragging, in that case. I'm jealous.
When she was on her White Chalk tour I took a trip to NYC specifically to see her in concert at the Beacon Theatre (and also to see the Blade Runner Final Cut in the cinema). She was great, and played songs from throughout her career. (I think she did "Working for the Man" from TBYML.)

Confession: this is the first PJ Harvey song I have ever heard. Sounds like a rawer Alanis?

In 1990s Canada, we had these youth television 'program jockeys', referred to as 'PJ' for short (i.e. PJ Phil, PJ Lauren, etc). They were always seen as fairly sad attempts by network television to be  hip and cool among kids. Unsurprisingly, the networks got it wrong and PJs tended to be loathed by most youths. (laugh) I remember on occasion they would read the mountains of hate mail they received on air, which was probably the only time young Canadians were actually entertained by them. Anyway, you see where I'm going with this, whenever I heard people talking about 'PJ Harvey', I just assumed she was one of these clowns with a record deal.

If you missed White Chalk, I'd say that's the only one of her albums since 2001 that's a required listen. After that, I'd pick her second John Parish collaboration, A Woman a Man Walked By, and the compilation The Peel Sessions 1991–2004 unless you already have most of the tracks. Let England Shake was well received (it won the Mercury Music Prize), but I've never cared for that or for Uh Huh Her. The Hope Six Demolition Project has a couple of good tracks, but in general I think her current overtly political phase has been pretty weak both musically and lyrically.

The Hope Six Demolition Project has a couple of good tracks, but in general I think her current overtly political phase has been pretty weak both musically and lyrically.

Also tangentially related, in 2005 she contributed some songs to Marianne Faithfull's "Before the Poison", which is a fantastic album and also has some great songs from Nick Cave in it (has it really been 14 years? ?? Oh god, now I'm depressed.)

Lots of good tracks.

PJ Harvey is cool.  I like Down By The Water.

Crystal Castles are great.

And I finally listened to the new Tool album.  It's fantastic at being what it is, a Tool album.  Nothing particularly new or groundbreaking, just more good music from Tool.  I was disappointed at first, but it's growing on me.  I particularly like Pneuma, Descending, and 7empest.

I just finished listening to this:

Same here! When I actually think about the album, I'm like eh, it's too wanky, eh, most tracks should be 3 minutes shorter, eh, MJK's vocals are kinda weak, etc etc etc. But when I listen to it, it just stirs something inside me. I've even teared up listening to Descending, ffs. If that's not an endorsement, I don't know what is.

And now I'm listening to this:

I had never heard of this band until literally a couple of days ago, when I bumped into this while watching other videos from this series of concerts:

...and now I think I'm in the phase of slowly falling in love with them. So dreamy!

Yeah nice find with Beach House. They sound so familiar but still unique.

Dact, are you trying to make everyone cry with the Maxence Cyrin track? (laugh) Just kidding - thanks for the lead. I hadn't heard of that guy.

Just to ride our dreamy tangent a bit further:

Actually, I did a doubel take on the Maxence track's screen cap. Thought it was radiator girl's little number from Eraserhead!

That was a nice Beach House performance video.  I was expecting a single song, but it was quite the intimate set.  This must be an early show for them, since all of the songs are off their first album.  I like quite a few of their songs, like The Hours and Rough Song for example, but I think my favorite Beach House track is probably this one from that same album:

I really enjoy that track from Múm.  Lovely mood and vocal.  This is probably my favorite track by that band:

As for how I came across that Maxence Cyrin cover of the Pixies, I heard it used in Dave Chappelle's Sticks & Stones on Netflix.  Lovely rendition.

So I'll try to stay with the mood a bit.  Here's a song by a defunct Atlanta band that I'm listening to at the moment:

I love this one, always makes me feel good.  So nostalgic and pretty.  It's got a bit more of a beat and groove to it than Beach House and Múm.

Edit:  I just realized I posted this one here a couple of years ago.  Still love it.

So how about some Air?  Similar mood and theme:

All this makes for such a nice late Sunday mood! Mum and Air are both lovely.

Long time no see!

Here's a rather long one.

Nice tracks, guys. Dact, never heard of Shampoo. Got them on the list for a balcony chill session with my family this weekend. Cheers dude.

Yeah Air is always the right answer. My personal fav:

When I lived in China, we'd get these huge downpours that would just go and go. I remember a few times getting myself into super weird headspaces by having this on repeat while out on the balcony watching the rain with a few drinks.  :P

That Pink Floyd song is a great pick.  I fell in love with this one when I was 15, roughly 20 years after it was released, and it still sounds amazing.  Easily among their top songs.

And that track by Air is a beauty.  Spooky.  In the beginning, it somewhat reminds me of Alain Goraguer's songs from the soundtrack to Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage), like this one:

It goes much further though, and has a great mood beyond the initial spookiness.  French music is great.

Sigur Rós is fantastic.  I love that album, and Olsen Olsen is one of their best.  As moody as the song can be, there's a wonderful optimism there.  Very cool video, too.  I would love to see them perform in such a beautiful setting.  I was reminded of this song when I watched The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (by Studio Ghibli) a while ago and heard this:

My favorite Sigur Rós track might be Ný Batterí:

Thanks for posting such good tunes, everyone!  Sorry for posting a collection each time.  Maybe next time I'll just post one?

Dact, loved all of those. Fond memories from my teenage years of that Sigur Ros album. Actually just listening to that track takes me back.

Some Stones. Voodoo Lounge is an underrated album:

I was not familiar with that Stones song.  Thanks for posting, I really dig it.

Here's my recent listen:

Nice little grove there, Frighter.

Anyone remember music styles like 'gabber'. It just sounds like a headache to 40-year-old me now:

What I'm literally listening to right now:

!!!

I love Madrugada to bits (their reunion tour absolutely slayed, never thought I would have the chance to hear those songs live), but I always found Hoyem's solo albums to be kind of ehhhhh whatever. This is a very nice track though! Makes me want to check out the album to see if there's anything else I might have missed :)

These days I've been trying to get into the new Chelsea Wolfe album, but it's been a huge disappointment. The songs she shared in advance were all stunning, but when the album finally came out, it was clear that they were actually the only decent tracks on it. It's not that it's BAD, it's just... boring. Dull. Uninspired. Droning. Songs meld into one another and after a while of listening to it I inevitably find myself zoning out and coming back to it two tracks later like "huh? What was I listening to? What time is it?"

Anyway, here goes what is probably my favourite song from the album. The video is crappy but the song is very pretty. Side effects might include stopping whatever you are doing, contemplating the ceiling pensively, and thinking back on somebody you hurt at some point:

I've been a big fan of Madrugada almost since the start—I remember eagerly awaiting the New Depression EP—but I missed them at the Quart Festival back in 2000, and so never saw them live until the reunion this January.

Spoiler: ShowHide
Unfortunately it was a slight letdown for me: I'd have liked them to play more songs from throughout their career rather than doing all of Industrial Silence to the near-exclusion of anything else, and I was almost a bit put off by the scale of the whole production.

Still, it was definitely a great show, and Høyem's vocals and frontman energy are amazing.

Anyway, I completely agree about Høyem's solo stuff. It just doesn't rock the way the band did. I've listened to his albums a few times, and only a couple of tracks (this one primarily) have stuck with me.

BTW, thanks for the Lana del Rey pick. I've never really cared for her music, but that was quite an earworm.

Ha, it was the other way around for me: the first thing I heard from them was "Look away Lucifer" and I went backwards from there.

It's surprising to know about the scale of the production in other places, in Berlin they gave a pretty stripped down show on a small-ish stage (see the pic below), with just some fancy lights now and then and a glitter cannon (just one! Ghost had TWO!) during... "Norwegian Hammerworks Corp", I think? In any case, hearing Industrial Silence in its entirety made me very very happy so I can't really complain about the dearth of tracks from other albums :)

Happy to hear! It really is a wonderful song.
