I'm proud to present "TALES" the new game by Ape Marina. A TECH-DEMO of the game is available (see bottom of the post).
An out of work layabout, Alfred Walsh, thinks he has found a cushy job as the custodian of a private library. He has no idea how wrong he could have been. When otherworldly forces intrude he is forced to abandon his career path: the casual dusting off of books between well-earned naps, and is thrust into a battle to save the very heart and soul of what makes humanity what it is.

LOL! Exactly that one!
Man, you're one busy guy :) Looks even better than Donald. Superb artwork. Good luck with the production!
Loving it, great stuff.
Let's download this gem...
Wow, this is great!
Played it for a while and you got me hooked. Really nice game so far.Congrats.
**Deletes the 10 or so earlier iterations from hard drive and downloads the final version**
**Runs off eagerly to play the game for the 17th time**
WOOOOOT!!!
WOW!
What a great surprise!
It 'a true delicacy, and I am so GREEDY of this stuff! :P
YUM!
SUPERB ApeMarina!
Hey guys. Thank you for ur first impressions.
Hi Gribbler :D - As u can see, just like you (as you said weeks ago) I started working on something more serious (taking a break with comedy).
Thanx Miguel, as usual I'm happy when u play my games :D
And thanx selmiak and Paolo "giocherellone" (Paolo, I put the game on Arena too ;) )
The demo is very short but it's useful to show the features and give you a taste of the plot.
I must say that Mandle gave me a precious and invaluable help, in text editing and in testing the game. Guys, this man is a tireless worker. Do not steal me him XD

He just means I can never get to work because there are never any tires on my car. Pay no attention!!!

Yeah, but I have just only finished writting a bloody prologue and you have dozens of screenshots, dialogues, characters (with portraits!) and whatnot! Thats not fair! :D

The screens look great! Keep up the good work!
Just wanted to add that some minor typos and glitches have been spotted post-release and have been fixed.
The download link in the first post is now to the most up-to-date version as of the time of this post.

I will also take this chance to condemn AprilSkies before the entire community for breaking one of the sacred commandments of indie adventure game development:
Spoiler
Commandment #27: Thou player character shalst cause items to disappear into and out of the completely separate dimension known as their inventory instantly and with no onscreen action or reaction of said player character, and with no logical consideration towards where said character could have possibly carried said items. The player character in your game is in direct violation of this commandment by actually reaching for, bending towards, and even squatting (
squatting I tell yas!!!) to retrieve items and then...
AND
THEN!!!
Finding a logical place on his person to store them away in!!!
AND THEN
EVEN!!!
Retrieving said items from exactly the place he last stored them in!!!
AND THEN
EVEN...
EVEN...
Spoiler
In two particular cases of impossible-to-store-away-on-self items...
*DRAMATIC PAUSE*
The player character carries said items IN THEIR HAND before the player, and God, and everyone!!!
Due to this serious infraction against the sacred commandments of indie adventure game development you...
...AprilSkies...
...have been sentenced to no less than
one year's hard labor working upon the completed version of the demo presented in this thread!
May God have mercy on your soul!
*RAPS GAVEL ON PODIUM*
I just tried the tech demo and was very impressed. Looking forward to seeing more! :)
Loved it! Great art, story and atmosphere! :)
Only have a little nit pick, if I may... you're using both mouse click and timer to skip to the next text, this might (as it happened to me) make the player click on the next text because the timer reached the end just as one finishes reading and thus missing a line of text...
Personally, I'm for letting the player decide when to move the text forward, that way one covers both the fast and the slow readers... But maybe that's just me. ;)
Will definitely keep this one under my radar! Keep up the great work! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/Smileys/AGS/smiley16_nodding.gif)

Thank you. Those feedbacks are exactly what a tech demo is for. ;)
It is indeed a splendid demo. Though I was disappointed that the library did not have any books on cuneiform writing for me to look at. (wrong) (I did wonder briefly if that was part of the puzzle, before the guard just told me everything.)

BIG SPOILER ALERT!!!
If you have not played the Demo yet then please do not open this reply!!!Spoiler
Ah...Do remember please though Merlin's words that the library contains the very essence of the legends and myths of humankind... This is not just an ordinary library where you can look up factual information... It is a kind of physically-existing metaphor for the foundation of culture that all of civilization was built upon...
I see where you are coming from though...Usually when a library is present in a game the player has to look up clues and such in the books. Maybe it's a good idea to make it clearer that this is not that particular kind of library to save the player some frustration in trying...
@Mandle:
Spoiler
Your explanation makes perfect sense actually - and it was pretty clear from Merlin's word - and indeed the introduction - that this wasn't an ordinary library. As you said, it was just a reflexive response to it being a library - and in particular in the context of finding out about ancient writing that you couldn't read - that made my mind jump to that idea. (Also, having the full index of all titles in the library. which I hadn't really browsed, only found the particular books I needed - made me think there might be puzzles about having to find a particular book according to its subject, not just being given a book title like the other ones.
Any further discussion on this can be done by PM if necessary (which it probably isn't!) - I don't want to derail this thread. So instead, I'll just mention that if anyone's reading this thread and hasn't already played the demo... stop reading this thread and play the demo!
Finally got around to playing the demo and I must say, it was extremely enjoyable! I really love the look of the game (although some parts are a tad bit too antialiased for my taste), the puzzles were well done, music was great and the story certainly has a lot of potential.
Some things that might need fixing:
Spoiler
1) A little bug and how to recreate it:
- Delete/remove save games
- Load game from title screen
- There are no saves, but click load game again despite that
- Now close the menu from X and you're left with a background picture only
2) I managed to maneuver myself inside the prison bars:
3) I don't know if it's intentional, but the correct stone wheel code doesn't seem to work before the guy has shown it to you (also, maybe a randomized code would add an extra touch to it)
Hey Hobo, Thanks a lot!! ;-D
^_^d
Spoiler
About point 3, yep. It's intentional.
Going fix those little issues
Wow, I can't believe I missed this. Looks great, gonna have to try out the demo! :)
I have to thank all the people who are sending me feedbacks.
I implemented a lot of features.
Work's going on well.

No it's not based on that show. I didn't know this TV series :)
I read its plot and it has something in common actually, but it's substantially different.
I'll watch some episodes if there are some in streaming ;)
Update June 12th 2014
A musician joined the team!!!
He is a brilliant Italian composer, Luigi Di Guida.
Currently the music tracks are royalty-free tracks by Kevin MacLeod. Kevin's music is very high quality music, but of course not original.
Luigi will compose an original soundtrack for the game.

Hi Splat44,
Thanks so much. I'm happy you enjoyed the Demo and it could be great if you can help me in testing. It's cool 'cause these days I'm building up a testing team and I'm going to send you a PM.
Thanks ;-D

I never talked before because there's a lot of work still to do, but I hope all will go right.
Hey, that's grand! I just checked the techdemo, and everything looked very promising. And gotta say I really enjoyed the music, keep up the good work! :D

but after a few minutes, I was completely hooked by the story.
I love the concept of book travelling.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot Creamy!
Soon I'll post new screen shots ^^
First of all I'd like to thank everyone who nominated Tales tech Demo or the "Best Demo Award 2015".
That made me so happy ^_^
Thank you <3
A quick update of the progress (edited in the first post):
Progress:
Story/Writing: 100%
Scripting: 90%
Art: 95%
Music, sfx: 85%
The work is going on well and probably within a month all the scripts, music and art stuff will be completed and fully tested (as I'm trying to test the game gradually; as I indroduce new stuff, I send to testers)
If there won't be major problem, next step is "voice acting" ^^

Trust me...it is!!! I just played through the whole game (so far) for proofreading/playtesting purposes and, even mostly knowing what I had to do (this has been about my tenth play-through over the various incarnations), it took me about 4 hours.
But HEY!!! AprilSkies!!! I haven't seen that last screen yet!!! (I can kinda guess what book it is in though ;) )

Looking beautiful AprilSkies. Congrats, you're almost at the finish line!!! Can't wait to get my hands on this game :)
Very beautiful ;-D I'm sure I'll have awesome times with this!
Party is on! Congratulations to you AprilSkies for having winning the best demo for 2014! I'm sure those involved in game such animation, graphic are and as well testing are celebrating
Those who haven't tried this game need download and play this one!
Thanx a lot to all who voted it for the best Demo!

And thank you Splat!!! You're testing the full version of the game and you're really a top tester! So double thanks to you!

And a rolling demo, in the form of an early preview, in the shape of a YouTube video ;)
[embed=720,480]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVbsDnm4NkQ[/embed]
(sorry the quality is a bit low on this particular edition, a full HQ trailer in due course :))
The game itself is currently getting a little bit of extra programming but soon we should have some voices recorded and a new demo ready. Keep an eye out! More info on the Greenlight page. The game features original music by Luigi Di Guida (which is ace, but am not spoiling it just yet ;))
Kudos if you recognize the (brief) voice in the trailer ;)
Nice trailer! I will have to play this game someday! (laugh)
Kudos if you heard the (brief) voice in the trailer... (laugh)

Yay, thanks Mark!

Thanks a lot!

Looks beautiful and intriguing -- and sounds absolutely gorgeous. This is going to be EPIC!
And my, what a stunningly handsome adversary! (laugh)
I'm totally loking forward to this! ;-D
Looks and sounds awesome Andrea! ;-D
Just a quick one, here's a track from the game to listen to:
[embed=720,480]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGDSDb29TSQ[/embed]
"Jungle" by Luigi Di Guida - http://www.luigidiguida.it/?lang=en
Hoping things go smoothly enough to get this out in December or by end of year. Through Ape Marina's diligence, the game itself is certainly solid and ready. Ultimately just voices to do, translations, a bit more testing & Steam setup. The plan is also to have it at GOG and some other places (drm-free). Not sure what I'll be back to personally say until the new demo/website is ready but in the meantime please do vote on greenlight if you get a chance, thank you! http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=494079360
Should be something to see/play at AdventureX too, providing the developers are ok with that? ;)
Of course!!!! It would be great to have tales at adventureX!
I hope I could be able to attend to AdventureX this year too! Not sure about that but I'll do my best!
And guys, thanks you all for support on greenlight! Please go on voting! ^___^
I love the track! :-D
I really can't wait to play this game!
Great music, really captures a Mayan feel!
Hi! Just a quick bump as it's been a wee while, to say we are teetering on the edge of releasing this now, thanks to AprilSkies and his team for their patience, and of course for you AGS folk and potential players for yours! I'll be back very soon with full release & distributor details, pre-orders and a trailer.
Thanks to all the VA's...lots of great and fun voices in there and also Fizzi for her help with the voice editing. Just a bit more release prep to do (like the image above, nice one AprilSkies!) and some final testing. Hopefully along with the other items mentioned above - due to be posted soon - there will be a fresh demo (with voices) also. So I really just came by to say "watch this space" cos "this space" will soon be filled, with Tales! :)
/me cheers! :-D
Watching this space...
Andrea (https://twitter.com/apemarina)'s delightful watercolors and Luigi (http://www.luigidiguida.it/)'s cinematic score... what a phantastic voyage this gonna be!
Been waiting for this. I'm getting the itch.
Oh goody. I was rather thinking this project had fallen into dev hell. All the best.
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy!!!!
It's been a long time coming!!!
The first time I ever played the game it had only 5 playable rooms, but even then the potential was very obvious.
And then AprilSkies (and his partner Giovanni) just kept building and building and every time I got a new updated version it was so much grander than the last, way past the point that I thought he was going with it.
Collaborating with AprilSkies on this game over the course of about 2 years has been one of the most rewarding and fun experiences of my life.
He is a dream to work with, always open to suggestions and eager to include my (hopefully) good ideas, and extremely diplomatic about rejecting the many not so good ones: "Mate, it's a genius idea! But I don't think it's quite right for this game. Let's save it for the next one!" (laugh)
I did get to write one of the puzzles too, but I'm not going to say which in case it becomes universally hated by the players... (laugh)
I can't wait to play the full version and hear the many thousands of lines of dialog I (co-)wrote performed by the amazing voice actors I have heard so far...It was huge fun finding the "voice" for each character while writing the text, and from what I've heard so far, the voice actors have really done a great job of bringing the many characters to life in that spirit...
Now:
"Gimme the cheese!"
I cannot wait! :-D It looks amazing -- as everything Andrea does (have you played Until I Have You?) -- and the titular tales sound exciting! Got the chance to discover bits and pieces of the story via the dialogue lines (laugh)
I've never been excited this much about an adventure game since old Sierra times! (laugh)
Can't wait! :-D
Thank you so much mates! <3

Well done! The audio not is a problem. I asked for it only for curiosity.
WHEN THE HELL IS THIS GAME EVEN COMING OUT??!!
I soooooo need to have played this game YESTERDAY!!!
HURRY UP with the release or I will sit on my own nuts until I can play in protest!!!
Stop reporting more errors & last minute changes with it then and maybe we'll finish it :P
It's probably best they have been found and will be sorted, thankfully all minor issues. But yes...release is clearly not quite there yet...but soon enough! Andrea is working on a new promotional demo, I want to get a couple of default translations sorted, Mandle has been working through the text to make sure it's tip top. The build is solid... but yes with multiple people doing multiple things it takes a little while for the tasks to be done, so thanks for your patience :)
Oh yeah, leave it to Mandle to break a game in a way no one would've even thought of (laugh)
Can't wait, either!
(laugh)(laugh)(laugh)
(Hehehe...I was just shamelessly bumping the thread...)
Everyone's posting today! As such...here's the Tales trailer :)
You may not learn anything new (especially if you played the demo) but you will certainly learn a lot of names...
I'm not sure if it's showing subtitles for me or for everyone. Either way, translated trailer subtitles will be available soon enough for those who will be playing in other languages!

You saw it here first! Well, unless you watched a Screen 7 Live stream I did the other night, then you saw it there first. But we are releasing the game on Nov 14th. I assure you, you heard
that here first :)
Thanks to Andrea, Mandle and everyone involved especially now as things get hectic towards the inevitable
version 1.0.0 bug that everyone experiences I mean, release :) It's solid... it's a great point n click, but you can be the judge, jury and executioner on that one soon enough, cos I might just be media bias...
Specific release related info to follow. Thanks for keeping an interest in Tales! or, Taaaaaaaaallllleeeeessss ;)
EDIT: Steam coming soon, feel free to wishlist it! http://store.steampowered.com/app/416250/
Four weeks?! Make that tomorrow, or face the wrath of Oblivion!
All joking aside... YASSS! Can't wait to get my claws on this game! It looks and sounds fantastic!
Haha! Please check your email Fitz! We are 2 lines short of any wrath of Oblivion ;) ty!
When I read it, I did an impromptu practice of the lines OBLI18 and OBLI19 ;)
Now you can pre-order your copy of Tales to keep you warm over the winter months ;)
You can get 15% off by being an early bird customer at http://www.screen7.co.uk/#!/tales or http://www.taaales.co.uk
Please note that Spanish subtitles probably won't be available on release, but there will be an update available not too long after as we do intend for ALL copies to include Spanish in due course. The same for Linux version (Linux version only on Steam though)...just as soon as we can.
You can also get the game directly from online stores, Steam, Humble Store, Zodiac Store and hopefully GOG. Just playing the indie developer waiting game with them right now... Wherever you choose to get it, thanks for doing so and supporting Ape Marina and Screen 7!
HOLY SHEEET!!!
/me scrambles to pre-order..
The mass-hysteria mob follows suit!
Today is the day! :) Does anybody know at what time the game will be released?
It's live! Already downloaded and played a little bit. Fun fun fun!
