Title: Adventure Games Museum
Post by: Gribbler on Thu 24/04/2014 22:16:53
Years ago I had an idea to write a blog called "Adventure Games Museum" where I wanted to write about adventures of the past, with photos of given game front and back cover, it's box contents, trivia and whatnot. You know, like in a display in the actual museum. I guess I wanted to show the young adventurers how the games were being released in the old days, before the age of digital distribution: no "soulless" downloadable keys, no lame DVD boxes, no pretty box covers (it's about you Innocent Until Caught box cover ;) ). The blog didn't really work out. I posted 2 or 3 games and abandoned it due to lack of time. Also, it was in my native language and only about 3 or 4 people read it :( I thought why not make a collaborative effort out of it, right here in the forums. If you have an old adventure game (in a good museum quality shape of course :) ), post some pictures in this thread, write a few words. I implore you! I can't be the only freak who marvels at this things... Well, even if I am, worry not, I will be posting games myself. :P

Oh, and I don't do this to boast about my games collection. Not AT ALL! Nooooo, sir!

So, my first game is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Why? Because it belongs in a museum!

Front and back cover:

What's inside the box - Henry Jones' diary, Hint Book, six 5,25" really floppy disks, copy protection sheet with special glasses, bunch of leaflets.

Intricate spoil-proof hint system! Copy protection worked the same way so you could not xerox it.

Beautiful handwritten Henry Jones' diary which you had to consult to solve puzzles in the game. Really cool stuff!

That is so cool to see again. I loved how they included so many goodies with the game. Made you feel so involved in the adventure. Really ground breaking, I don't care what anybody says. My old original boxed ag's got thrown in the car boot for sale, years back. Still a bit pissed off about it lol. Anyway, post more!

Ooo, I have a cardboard box of Fate somewhere- with the original disks even (though those are well past their shelf date). Will go and dig it out the weekend!

Yep, you got me, I want you all to drool all over this thread!

You might be surprised - these old Indy floppies still work. Some time ago I bought 5,25" disk drive and plugged it to my old tower PC, and they work just fine. It's an amazing feeling to unbox the game and install it from it's original disks and play it. A real time machine - woooosh - and it's 1989 again. :)

5,25" is not hipsterish enough anymore! Punch cards -- now THAT would be something ;)

As luck would have it, Indiana Jones was of my first PC games -- but I got Fate of Atlantis (full talkie on CD) as an OEM version bundled with my sound card. The first boxed games I got were Little Big Adventure and All New World of Lemmings. But the biggest box I've ever seen was for AD 2044 (anyone know/remember that one?)

I certainly do remember the game (even it 8-bit Atari version :) ) but not the box. Was it like Schizm big?

So are the hints printed under the red writing, which is cancelled out by the red plastic?

I like stuff like this, kind of reminds me of a secret agent playset i had as a kid. <nostalgic smile><looks towards ceiling>

Exactly. So you wouldn't spoil a puzzle other than the one you search the soultion for. And copy protection sheet was, literally, copy protected as there were no color photocopy machines back then. :)

Thanks for having opened this Gribbler, so cool to see floppy disks which are actually floppy.
Will there be a chapter #2?

I think so, yeah :) Although I got a Schizm/Reah bundle. But AD was their biggest game at the time, and probably the most spectacular thing made in our neck of the woods -- so I'm not surprised they tried to sell it BIG! That intro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7is7d4UDT28) blew me away back then (especially the early trailer with Blade Runner end theme). The graphics didn't age well at all, but back in 1996... it was something. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for good retro CGI :)

EXHIBIT #2: RANDOM FLOPPY DISKS

Sorry Gribbler, I couldn't find any old game boxes, which probably do still exist somewhere (I think in my parent's attic). But I dropped in at my parent's house this afternoon and Dad retrieved these curious artifacts..

I can't remember "Super Secret Spell Adventure", but I'm sure it's exciting and educational.

Sleuth is there too!

I don't have Last Crusade, but I have that diary in a box somewhere. Was cool to read.
Since this is license to show off, here let me present a few :D. The only floppy disk stuff I have is ancient software which I keep around for some reason. Most of mine are from the CD era ("newest" was from 95). Even though I have all the boxes (I liked having the box to store the game stuff on the shelf), they were heavily used, so its definitely not "mint condition" or anything. Click the images for the full size.. I dunno why I took such large pictures, but I guess it allows you to see details if you want (or if you want more pics of some specific thing feel free to ask).

MYST:
The box:
(http://i.imgur.com/oGZUiS4.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/oGZUiS4.jpg)(http://i.imgur.com/1ITy3fz.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/1ITy3fz.jpg)
The goodies:
(http://i.imgur.com/ADE1T61.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/ADE1T61.jpg)
The journal has the first page telling you to write your thoughts, and the rest are just lined. The manual was inside the CD case, and the little leaflet was there to explain how to get it working in Windows 3.1. It also included a poster of the island. I was never much of a fan of Myst, which is probably why all this stuff survived so well. Trying to get it to run now it required some archaic version of Quicktime which I couldn't get working, and since, as I said, I was never much of a fan, I've not bothered with messing around in a VM to get it to work.

King's Quest Collection
(http://i.imgur.com/MUgznCH.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/MUgznCH.jpg)
(http://i.imgur.com/aUnNeES.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/aUnNeES.jpg)
As you can see, this one saw a lot more use. Was a double CD pack. The manual included copy protection stuff, and spells for KQ3 (which I still never finished). The KQ Companion was pretty cool,  it was like a hintbook, except written as a first person narrative, with the protagonists thoughts and all, not "I did this and then I did that", so it was fun to read in its own right. The leaflet explained that some of these games were "Digital Antiques", so don't be mad if they sucked :D.

Also for your viewing: Lord of the Rings- Fellowship of the Rings, but it was more an RPG, though.
(http://i.imgur.com/MABf4kr.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/MABf4kr.jpg)
(http://i.imgur.com/lHWRI9s.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/lHWRI9s.jpg)
Box with slidey cover, manual, CD, reference card, instructions to get it to work on Windows 3.1 and small map.

Like someone else who mentioned it here, quite a few of the great games I got were part of a soundcard package, so while I have the manual and CD (as well as the occasional goodie), I have no box: Monkey Island, Loom, Wing Commander 2/Syndicate/Ultima VIII/Strike Commander combo pack. I have Indiana Jones FoA CD version with the box and manual and hintbook as well, but I can't find the CD envelope (I might've let it get lost since I had the same as part of one of the LucasArts archive volumes).
PS: Apologies for the large size of the images, I think I just added 10Mb to this thread.

Yeah I remember that. I think Zak's copy protection codes were similar, with gray swirly patters under the letters to make a copy so hard to read you'd rather go and not bother.
Didn't stop us from spending whole math classes writing down the stuff :-[
Title: Re: Adventure Games Museum

You could, however, just buy a red transparency film, put it on the page and b/w-copy that. I have a copy of the fingerprints from The Colonel's Bequest here that was produced the same way. Worked fine -- although in the case of TCB, it wasn't necessary at all because you got a 1 to 12 chance to guess the copy protection.

Many thanks to first museum contributors (especially Babar for beautifully preserved Myst) but, guys, I think we could use some rules here, we don't want it to get messy. This is our beloved genre! Could you please respect following while posting:

1. Post ONLY adventure games. We want it to be ADVENTURE games museum after all. :)
2. Post one game at a time and give your exhibit a proper number.
3. Post only boxed editions of games. DO NOT post cd-only, or cd in sleeve, or a pile of disks wrapped in a manual in a plastic bag or something like that. C'mon, who would want to look at that?
4. If it's possible, make a photo of front cover, back cover and what's inside the box.
5. It would be great if your game was in good condition (Babar's Myst was great, King's Quest Collection not so much)

I'm sure many of you have a golden age adventure game somewhere in a garage, back of the closet, or in the attic or cellar. Dig it up, do a sexy photo shoot and let us admire it! :D

Next game is a game that started it all for me. My first adventure game. My dear dear SoMI. I didn't speak English at the time so I had to finish it with a solution. Regardless, I fell in love with the game and the genre. Right after finishing the game I restarted it to live through the experience once again. True story!

EXHIBIT #3: THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND

Front and back cover:

Excerpts from back cover:
"Eye-gouging 3D graphics", (I love this one!)
"Ear-pearcing reggae music"
"No typing - point & click interface". (haha in your face Sierra! :) )
"Average playing time: 30 hours. (No way!)

What's inside the box: eight 5.25" floppy disks, manual, Dial-A-Pirate wheel and a bunch of leaflets.

Code-wheel copy protection, in which you had to mix and match several pirate's faces and assemble their names. Almost 25 later - it still works!

(I took it out of it's plastic bag).

Sorry Gribbler, I'm being facetious. I DO have games that ONCE came in a box! Believe me! Whether the boxes still exist is another question, but when I get a chance I'll have a good search for them!

Lovely Monkey Island post btw. That's the first time I've seen the 'Dial-a-Pirate' wheel in colour (I'd only ever seen a photocopied version).

And kudos to Babar on the Myst post. I have located my Myst CD, but the bloody box has gone walkabout!  :~(

EXHIBIT #6: THE COLONEL'S BEQUEST

Front and back of the box:
(http://i.imgur.com/aJmseH8.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/9MKgtEQ.jpg)

What's inside - lots of goodies! Four 3,5" disks, manual, Misty Acres Plantation map, magnifying glass, Laura Bow's notebook & pencil, Sierra catalogs and a registration card
(http://i.imgur.com/a7Drehn.jpg)

Beautiful little notebook where you can write down your clues
(http://i.imgur.com/WxHak9i.jpg)
Attention to details is staggering!

Big folded plantation map so you don't get lost.

Manual is not just a dull piece of how-to-play document. It contains many interesting informations, like a short biography of each of plantation guests. There's also ACT 1 in the form of a play.

Back of the map is covered with the red pattern hiding a set of fingerprints. Each time you start your game you have to take Laura's magnifying glass and identify a fingerprint shown on the screen.

Sierra catalogs are really fun to read all those years later. You can learn that a new Sierra blockbuster game King's Quest 5 is in the production (coming Fall 1990!), or you check out wide rooster of their games. :D

Did you know?
- Guybrush can die! Just wait a few minutes and do nothing when you're suspended above the pool of acid. You'll be lowered into it.
- The Amiga version of the game was nicknamed Disk Juggling Simulator because of constant disk swapping.
- One of the books in the library on Phatt Island is called "The Majesty of the Sierras". You can get it from the librarian.
When you look at the book Guybrush says: "Sierras? Majestic? I think not."

EXHIBIT #9: Beneath a Steel Sky (1994)

Funny story behind this one, the box was in much nicer condition but I decided it would be a grand idea to take it with me to London Super Comic Con (where Dave Gibbons was doing signings). With a copy of BASS and a nice silver sharpie in my inventory I waited in line to meet Dave, unfortunately it was only a 1 hour slot and signings closed before I could get to the front. I returned with a somewhat beaten up box and a side-quest never to be completed D:

The box includes a technical manual, security manual and two copies of the intro cutscene in comic form, not sure why there's two (can anyone add some insight?) one of the comics is smaller and on rough paper whilst the other bigger and on gloss full colour.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/oversizedchicken/photo5_zps4287e9e1.jpg399121042)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/oversizedchicken/photo11_zpsb2444fe9.jpg399121063)

The security manual has some nice details. I'd be happy to upload all the pages if anyone is interested :)

WOW! 8-0
Do you have 2 versions of what reads like Eagle's nest?
3 actually: 2 x the US Original Cardboard Sleeve Edition & 1 x the Floppy Disk Jewel Case 'Smash 16' Re-release, to be exactly.

TITUS is hard to decipher too, did read TITLE for some time but considerd this too meta for a title for an older game...
Yup, that Titus the Fox, my all-time favorite sidescroller-platformer game from the dos era :)

Here the original sized photo btw:

EXHIBIT #11: LOOM (1990)

Front and back cover:

What's inside the box: three 3.5" floppy disks, manual, Book of Patterns with glasses, LucasFilm catalog, a cassette and a bunch of leaflets.

Beautiful booklet where you could write the notes for the spells you discovered along the way. Many spells do not appear in the game though.

Red glassess again serve as a copy protection.

Is your loom audiotape still sealed???! Nice. And this would make me crazy as I would want to open it. All the time.
My loom version only had a white tape without such a nice cover. But I have no idea where that box went  :(

Did you know?
- The original script for the game was written by Hal Barwood who also wrote movie scripts for The Sugarland Express and Close Encounters of the Third Kind
- For a short period, lead artist Bill Eaken worked at Sierra On-Line, and he hated every second of it. When he did the evil ghost animation at the end of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, where it swirls around and comes right up to the player and speaks, he made it say "Fuck Sierra."

Did you know?
- Sierra named their EGA games "A 3D Animated Adventure Game" because of the... Walk Behind option? Yep, if a character can walk behind an object, a boulder for example, it's 3D! He actually moves his legs while doing it? It's animated! Ah, the simplicity of the 80s. :)

Today died the second of my favourite painters, H.R. Giger. Now all of them are dead. :-[ The first one was Zbigniew BeksiŠ„ski who, like Giger, also died tragically (he was murdered). To honor Giger, next museum piece is a game in which his works were used to create various otherworldy locations and monsters.

Rest in peace Hans, you will be remembered forever.

Character size has been doubled since Operation Stealth?? WOW! Double the fun!

What's inside the box: five 3.5" disks, manual, Characters Book, US Gold catalog, ship map and a copy protection wheel.

Characters Book describes the events before the dreadful cruise.

They sure liked wheel copy protections back in the 90s.

It varies. Sometimes you need those extra goodies to pass copy protection and sometimes it's just for immersion and need to justify the money you spent on the game. :)

Post by: Ben X on Fri 23/05/2014 15:07:37
I assume Esseb means specifically for this game...

The only thing I remember about CFAC, having never played it, is that it had one of those moments where the character walks straight into camera and then it seamlessly cuts to them walking out of and away from camera (which was a very showy, cinematic thing back then, typical of Delphine).

Oddly enough, I never actually played this game! I vaguely remember seeing it at a friend's house and curiously, somehow I ended up with it!

Did you know?

In one of the few instances of one game making reference to a game by another company, every now and then when the Gargoyle above Erasmus's house asks "What is your Quest?" one of the answer choices is "I want to be a pirate!" This is, of course, a reference to The Secret of Monkey Island by Lucasarts. If you select it, the Gargoyle says "Boy, have you got the wrong game," sends you back down the mountain.

EXHIBIT #4: RETURN TO ZORK (SECOND HAND COPY)

(I took it out of it's plastic bag).

Sorry Gribbler, I'm being facetious. I DO have games that ONCE came in a box! Believe me! Whether the boxes still exist is another question, but when I get a chance I'll have a good search for them!

Lovely Monkey Island post btw. That's the first time I've seen the 'Dial-a-Pirate' wheel in colour (I'd only ever seen a photocopied version).

And kudos to Babar on the Myst post. I have located my Myst CD, but the bloody box has gone walkabout!  :~(
This is really anoraky, but when and where did you get it? It's Activision-branded (and not Korean/Japanese/console), and at the time they were still (just about) using the Infocom label for adventure games. As far as I recall they never sold the game under their own (Activision) name for MS-DOS or Mac versions in the west. I can make out it says it was part of a bundle - what bundle?
Title: Re: Adventure Games Museum
Post by: arj0n on Sat 21/06/2014 23:31:24
Sslaxx, you're right.

Monkey424's specific version came, republished 4 years later then the original 'Rerturn to Zork', with
the 'Megapak 8' bundle/compilation which was published by a typical compilation-company called 'Megamedia Corp'.

If you take a real close look at the disc in monkey424's photo, you can see/decipher the following 2 lines:
"for sale with Megamedia bundle only"
"not to be sold separately"
Title: Re: Adventure Games Museum
Post by: monkey424 on Tue 24/06/2014 12:14:17
I never noticed that writing on the CD. Or more to the point, I never cared. I don't recall the game being sold as part of a bundle. I found it in a daggy op shop near home, in 1996 I think. It's a great game.

i might have been misunderstood ,methinks.:cheesy:

When i said torch,i meant the faint "white" wording on the black sheet that comes with the game is so hard to read ,you have to go and get a torch(with battries in)
to try and make the words show or maybe stand near a window with lots of sunlight.
Anyway when i get the chance i'll post a pic .(i'm not at my flat atmo)

Flight Of The Amazon Queen

(re-play edition, "the world's greatest games in their original packaging")

I may try and add some more pics, for example there are some funny bits in the manual. But what you see is all I got with it. No funky extras. If someone has an ORIGINAL I'd be very interested to see! :)

First game I bought for myself (via mail order)... and for some reason the only one I still have fully in-tact... :D

Bit annoyed, I used to have Operation Stealth box, discs and manual with copy protection. Anyone else got that? I also had another one, 4 or 6 CD FMV game but I can't remember it's name, one of the CD's is around here somewhere.... never played it, couldn't get it to run. I'd also be interested to see if someone has Noctropolis original packaging?

@Gribbler: You won't find my copy on ebay... not as long as I decide it's fate anyway. ;)
I'll be posting a few games as I manage to edit the pictures... I took 104 picture in total... 8-0

Good luck with the moving. (nod)

EDIT: Sorry for the double post. :-[
Is it okay to double post, when posting a new game to the museum?
I also feel that there should be an index right at first post, that one could maintain and update when a new game gets posted in here. I can't remember if it's possible for an Admin to "insert" a new post at the start, probably not. If not, there are two options:
Option 1: Gribbler edits his post and adds an index to it.
Option 2: Create a new thread for the index (no possibility to reply there), and then Gribbled could just add a line with the Link for for index on the first post.
Too much work? Maybe... I just feel it's a bit hard to keep track of what is posted and what I have that is not... (roll) Probably as the thread grows it'll keep getting harder to follow up with it.

Exhibit #36: Shadoan

I honestly can't remember if I ever played this one... I bought a lot of games when our software club closed (they rented the games out), and maybe I never got to try this one... ???

Box art:

Back of the CD box (do I really have 2 copies?):

A bit of story:

Map of Shadoan (from the manual):

EDIT: Now that I come to think, that first CD was probably one of the many I bought when I was in China... a pirate copy :-[ that I then put inside the box of the original.

You can check list of Museum Exhibits in my first post in this thread. I will keep it updated.

Quote from: CassiebsgIs it okay to double post, when posting a new game to the museum?
If each time you contribute a new game, you can make as many posts as you like. I hope moderator shares the same opinion :)

Oh, and thanks for posting Master Lu. I have a sealed copy and finally can see what's inside :)
BTW, fun fact - small part of the game takes place in Danzig (now Gdansk) which is my hometown in Poland :D

Exhibit #37: Microsoft Adventure v1.00 (PC Booter - 1981)

The first commercial PC version (port) of the first ever mainframe adventure game named 'Colossal Cave Adventure,' from the '70s.
Microsoft Adventure was released together with the initial version of MS DOS 1.0 as a launch title for the IBM PC in 1981 which makes Microsoft Adventure the first ever commercial game for the PC.
Funny thing: releasing DOS 1.0 together with - not a DOS game but - a PC-Booter game... ???:-D
Microsoft Adventure is a text adventure containing 130 rooms, 15 treasures, 40 useful objects and 12 problems to solve. :=

EXHIBIT #40: Kingdom O'Magic

This is a weird one, can't remember if I ever got to even try playing it... 8-0

50 bucks? 8-0 I'll throw that one on my brother, he's the one always talking about ebay and he's the one responsible for how these got put away... (roll)

Anyway on to today's post. :)

Cool!

EXHIBIT #43 : VERSAILLES - 1685
My favourite first-person adventure game from Cryo.
The game comes with 2 CDs, a user's guide and an A3 map on yellowed paper.
[imgzoom]http://creamy.r.c.f.unblog.fr/files/2015/01/content.jpg[/imgzoom]
The map proves itself useful in the gardens.
The guide introduces us to Versailles life during the reign of Louis XIV. It presents briefly some historical figures. However, the encyclopedia contained within the game is more substancial.

EXHIBIT #44 - Broken Sword : The Shadow of the Templars
The 1996 edition :
The title of the series varies a lot from one country to another. In french, it means "The Knights of Baphomet".

The box holds 2CDs and the novel "Savage warriors" by Steve Jackson.
The novel is text-only, so it's not worth photographing.
[imgzoom]http://creamy.r.c.f.unblog.fr/files/2015/01/package-bs1.jpg[/imgzoom]
If ever there was a user's guide, I lost it.

OK Gribbler, let's continue while I'm at it :

EXHIBIT #45 - Broken Sword II : The Smoking Mirror

The 1997 edition : .
[imgzoom]http://creamy.r.c.f.unblog.fr/files/2015/01/box-bs2.jpg[/imgzoom]
Once again, the translators have run wild. Here, the french title means "The Shields of Quetzalcoatl"
The box contains the bare minimum : two CDs and the user's guide.
[imgzoom]http://creamy.r.c.f.unblog.fr/files/2015/01/wp_20150112_013.jpg[/imgzoom]
The user's guide contains a walkthrough of the first puzzle of the game. Seeing as you're tied on a chair in a burning room with a tarantula, it can come in handy.

One last exhibit and I'll be done flooding this website

EXHIBIT #46 - SPQR: The Empire's Darkest Hour

My copy is a "replay" version of the game, like Mods' "Amazon queen".
(re-play edition, "the world's greatest games in their original packaging")
There's no point in showing the ugly yellow band wrapping the box.
In the box : CD and guide.
[imgzoom] http://creamy.r.c.f.unblog.fr/files/2015/01/wp_20150111_026.jpg[/imgzoom]
...plus a nice big map of Rome.
[imgzoom]http://creamy.r.c.f.unblog.fr/files/2015/01/wp_20150111_015.jpg[/imgzoom]
To be honest, I gave up the game after a few tries. The places depicted are gorgeous but nobody populates them and I couldn't get past the loneliness. It's strange because the guide shows many characters :

Lovely showings! :)
You sure the user manual isn't "hiding" on the CD box? Some times it's not just a piece of paper stuck on the front of the cd case... ;)

And more amazingly is, that until recently I never knew there was more than one "Broken Sword", so lovely to see that one. :)

Maybe you were just walking around in the deserted part of the city, and you never found the room where the orgy was going on... (laugh)(roll)

QuoteYou sure the user manual isn't "hiding" on the CD box?
Yes, I checked. I used to play the game with my 3 brothers so it can be anywhere.

QuoteI never knew there was more than one "Broken Sword"
The Smoking Mirror is a very good game. Revolution software remastered it in 2010 (http://revolution.co.uk/games/the-smoking-mirror/) if you want to try it.

QuoteMaybe you were just walking around in the deserted part of the city, and you never found the room where the orgy was going on... (laugh)(roll)
I was young when I got the game so it's probably for the better if I never found them 8-0 :-[

It's great to see original boxes of games that I have enjoyed. I mostly own discount versions of these games.
For instance, I got "The Riddle of Master Lu" (Exhibit #35) with "Orion Burger" in a premier collection.

Let me just say that I was joking. ;-D
I never played SPQR, nor have even heard of it before I saw your post... just thought of that when I read your comment and thought it would be funny. (laugh)

Funny, I also have Orion Burger here, Pt version... no box and it seems I miss the manual... (there's a note on the back of the CD saying to ask for the manual where one has bought the game... I don't remember doing that. 8-0 ).

Did you know?

- The game is based on the original concept of Steven Spielberg who originally created the storyline to be an episode in his Amazing Stories tv series. It would have been too expensive to shoot, so Spielberg approached LucasArts in 1989 with an idea of making it a game.

Then again, I don't think I ever had a joystick for the PC, and as far as I remember I've only ever player adventure games on the PC (okay, I tried some text ones on the Amiga, but those don't count as you need to write and not point&click. ;) ).

EXHIBIT #56: DRACULA RESURRECTION (2000)

Let's kick off this new season with a game about the world's most famous vampire.

A sequel to the original novel, this first-person adventure developped by obscure French company Index+ shines through gorgeous graphics and interesting puzzles, if not for its story.

Now with the box. An elegant red cover
