Title: Idea for an AGS Game - The Song Sword
Post by: Stile on Tue 27/01/2015 06:02:15
There are a lot of ags games out there that are cool and clever, but I have an idea for a game that i think would be fresh and is open for anyone to develop. I'm a father of three and don't have time to dedicate to working on it myself, but would love to see it made.

Essentially it's about a medieval peasant with dreams of a better life that stumbles upon a plot to kill the king and destroy the kingdom...

Now here is where the idea is different from most games... He/She finds a magical sword that when unsheathed causes all those in the immediate vicinity to burst out in song about their current situation. A Musical Adventure Game. Of course it would require voice participants that can carry a tune and some clever and witty song lyrics.

Another idea for a plot twist is the sword could have a counterpart possessed by those who are trying to kill and overthrow the king... much potential for villianous musical cut scenes.

So, any takers?

There's potential for an interesting game there, but I'd recommend creating some kind of design document if you want to get interest from people and show you're serious.

I've been thinking about musical adventure game for some time now. It would not be easy as lyrics have to be synced with music so basicly all songs would have to be blocked. I did something like that for the ballad in my game.

It's a good idea, but nothing extremely original. I'm sure many developers have at least toyed with the musical idea (I sure have), but it's very hard to pull off (implementing dialog options without losing the flow of the songs etc.) and requires a rather hefty voice acting budget. I'd personally ditch that fantasy peasant/sword/king stuff and make a proper Space Opera :)

If done right, it could be pretty awesome, a number of TV series (http://www.ifc.com/fix/2013/09/10-best-musical-episodes) have proven that. As for games, then there are short musical sections in some of them (http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/05/the_10_best_musical_numbers_from_videogames.php), Curse of Monkey Island even integrated it with gameplay.

The only one I can think of atm that actually did this is Dominique Pamplemousse (http://squinky.me/my-games/dominique-pamplemousse/).  (Not to say there aren't more... but this is the only one I'm aware of.)

Man, I can't even make a game where one guy walks around a couple of rooms and doesn't make sound when he talks.

Yeah, I've worked out 2 musicals/adventures in my head over the years and never even started on them because of the challenges that lie not only in making it work but also those that stem from trying to make such a game fun.

I like it, because my latest game has a few lines of the main character singing when the player clicks talk on certain inanimate objects. I also like singing.
