Have you ever wondered how your room got so messy? In the aftermath of a party have you ever questioned the level of destruction "Did we really trash the house? I don't remember throwing a pizza on the ceiling, and why are there cigarette burns on my couch when nobody I know smokes?" It's almost as if somehow, overnight, mess and disorder have multiplied without your consent.

What if we told you that you and your friends are not responsible for the profanities scrawled in lipstick on your bathroom mirror? What if we told you that, in the wee hours of the morning when you are passed out in a dreamless drunken stupor, little beings we like to call Mess Goblins come out and dirty your home.

That's right my friends, you have a Mess Goblin problem.

Join the Mess Goblins on their first adventure with Dropped Monocle Games. As plucky protagonist Pippup Binbasher, it's your job to mess with Harry Flemming, a teenager who thought he could get away with hosting a house party while his parents are out of town.

Cause chaos, confusion, and disarray in the aftermath of the festivities. Let your inner Mess Goblin out and give Harry a hangover he'll never forget!

Team:

Sox - Art & Coding
Myinah - Writing & Coding
Problem - Music

Mess Goblins runs at 1280x720 and may run slow on older computers

Congrats on the release!

Hmm... these Mess Goblins could explain a lot actually.  Do they proliferate when you have children?

Yes the colonies tend to double in size when children are present, Captain D. We're not sure why though. More research is needed.

Congrats, this excellent work! It's surprisingly big for a MAGS game, I can hardly believe this was done in just a month. Sox has outdone himself with all those cute goblin animations. :)

...and for those who liked the music, you can download the Mess Goblins theme from my website:

Brilliant! Very well done and music is spot on!
Had a lot of fun with it... (laugh) You got me stumped at some point (you probably already know where), but am glad I stick with it and did not gave up on the temptation of getting a hint. It's so much more rewarding when it all of a sudden it says "click" and let it be light (or not (laugh) ).

Thanks a lot for this great game! (nod)

This is a crazy good entry for MAGS! There is just so much content and polish I'm very impressed :)

Only minor thing for me was the amount of speech for the tutorial/backstory and as such I missed the whole map thing for a few minutes. I prefer to just dive into a game but I completely understand why it was done in that style though so it's more my problem than yours :)

We made it so you could stop talking to him at any time for the players that don't like a lot of dialogue :)

Thank you everyone for your kind words. We really pushed ourselves hard on this one so it's great to hear that you all enjoyed it!
makes the lack of sleep worth it hehe ;)

and thanks again Problem, the music you made for us is fantastic as always

As Sox said you can skip all the dialogue right from the start. You don't have to ask Rabby a single question if you don't want to. More experienced adventure gamers probably don't need any instruction but any time we have tested our games with people who play games less often they always need a little help so we made it optional :)

I will reiterate Sox's thanks too. The positive feedback makes it worth the several mini breakdowns we had when we realised what we had gotten ourselves into! So glad people have enjoyed it :-D

Just finished the game and it was wonderful! Very well done especially considering the time limit.

I did have one or two problems, but I'm not sure if they were caused by my rather old and slow computer or not:

Quite a few times during the game I was booted back to my desktop and the game minimized, or sometimes it didn't minimize and I had to click on stuff that I could see flashing through the game to get control back. Hard to explain...

Also, the EXIT key on the main menu screen only made the game freeze for me, the cursor changed back to the normal windows' cursor and neither could I get back into the game, nor could I get back to the desktop, even using Alt-X etc. I had to forcibly shut down my computer to escape.

Once again: these could be issues with my computer rather than the game, but I just thought I would mention them in case you hear anything similar from other players.

Nit-picking (with SPOILER):
Spoiler
The Gremlins rule you parodied is to not feed them after midnight. The "not getting them wet" rule applies at all times. Or was this intentional?

So again: GREAT JOB! I had a lot of fun with the game!

Very strange Mandle. No one else has reported any problems like this.

And damn your nit picking :P
our goblins have their own rules..
They are modern 21st century goblins!

thanks for the feedback

Gobbies have similar but slightly different rules than Gremlins. We don't like to restrict when they can eat. They have fast metabolisms and are prone to hypoglycaemia! And technically the Gremlin rules are nitpicky too because what is after midnight anyway? That's literally 23 hours and 59 minutes of the day. (laugh)

What a wonderful little game. The amount of work and effort you managed to pour into it in just a month is astounding. The visual side and writing fits really well with the unique theme and setting and the music is also lovely. Few of the puzzles did feel a bit forced and far fetched, but I didn't have too much trouble with them. The design choice of not including a proper save game system feels always a bit odd to me, but that might just be me.

You've already created three awesome short games so far, can't wait to play a full lenght Dropped Monocle game in the future.

This game was great!

It is very funny and polished. It also has really clever (sometimes even too much for my poor brains :P!) puzzles.
I also like how, in my humble opinion, you are nailing a kind of a "trademark" style - Something like: "Hey! That's a Droppped Monocle game!" :D

Anyway, the whole Mess Goblin idea actually made me recall a legendary character (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monaciello) that belongs to Naples' folklore, even if, of course, they're not the same thing :)

Great entry, indeed!

Lovely little game. The difficulty was just right for me.
Spoiler
I was proud of my accomplishments before the place was burnt to the ground.
Now, I think my stains and vase breakage will be the least of Harry's concerns.

Keep up the good work.

This was super cute, and impressively meaty for a mags game. I enjoyed solving the puzzles, and the writing was pretty fun too. My favourite thing about the neat graphics is when his little nose wobbles when he does things, that's a great touch!

I encountered a small bug, for your info:

Spoiler
Once the rubbish has been flipped onto the floor by the cat, looking at the mess on the floor (right click) will set the view to talking when I walk around. Looking at another hotspot fixes this, so I'm guessing you merely forgot to change the view back.

Thanks for the fun game! :cheesy:

Ok, I'm a year late to the party but...

I'm playing through all the games entered into the MAGGIES 2015 that I haven't played yet and apparently I missed this one when it was released. I want to echo the compliments everyone else has expressed:

This game is polished in all aspects. The theme, graphics and puzzles are all excellent. The animations are smooth. Even had this just been an independent short game rather than a MAGS entry it would have been an excellent contribution. I want to add that the puzzles were at a perfect difficulty level that I really enjoyed solving them without getting frustrated.

Well done.
