Congratulations Team Party Wagon!

Thank you all for entering and voting, it made my part as the host so much fun to do :)

There was an option to leave a comment when voting, some were messages to me but every comment that were about the games was very positive, often surprised at how great the quality of this OROW was. I can only agree, you guys did a fantastic job.

Let's not wait two more years for the next one

OROW 9 is officially underway!
The theme set by previous winner qptain nemo is:

Uncontrollable

Deadline is midnigth GMT between the 30th and 31st of August: http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/to?iso=20150831T02&p0=291&msg=OROW+Deadline&font=cursive&csz=1
I wish you all the best of luck! :)

*********************************************************************

There are a few differences this time, the main one being a theme. More on this below. First some rules that were copy/pasted and adapted from the previous OROW with cat as the host:

***
The OROW competition is a very simple competition were you make a game that is one room big in just one week. This competition has in the past proven what the members of this community are capable of, and it will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Rules:

  • Entries must be made using AGS.
  • Entries should have only one playable room/location. *)
  • Entries may use content from any public source. But be transparent about it (e.g. "Music by Kevin MacLeod from incomptech.com")
  • Entries may have cut scenes, menus or limited controlled sequences outside the main room.
  • Entries must be submitted anonymously, more on that below.
  • There will be a theme announced on midnight GMT between the 23rd and the 24th of August.
  • You may get other people to help you with your game (e.g. music, sounds).
  • No maximum teamsize this time, but bear i mind that it can be tricky to manage a large team

*) This means a room in real-life definition, not an AGS room. So feel free to do close-ups, different views of the same room, scrolling rooms, outdoor scenes,... The main purpose of this rule is to keep it small and simple. Making a game in one week is an enormous task so starting small is a good way to actually finish it in time. We are not too strict about this rule, though.

Anonymous submission
An important aspect in this competition is the anonymity. This means that you cannot share any information about your entry. Nor can your game contain your name. This is because the game should be voted on by its own merits. Please also not include your name in the game info, as this can be seen in the file info.

You submit the game by sending me a link via PM. I will then upload it to another site.

***

The theme:
This is, as mentioned, the biggest difference between this OROW and the prior ones. Just before the competition officially starts a theme will be presented. The main purpose of this is to provide inspiration and perhaps turn this OROW as a competition into something more memorable. You will not be disqualified for not following the theme, just like you won't get disqualified if there is more than one room. However in voting there will be a category for "Best interpretation of the theme" and also a more jokingly one for "Worst abuse of the theme" (thanks Radiant ^^)

Voting
The categories for voting are as follows:

  • Best game,
  • Best concept/script,
  • Best graphics,
  • Best music/sound design,
  • Best scripting,
  • Best interpretation of the theme and
  • Worst abuse of the theme.
Looking for a team? Here's an OROW dating thread: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=52517.0

The OROW starts officially at midnight (GMT) between the 23rd and 24th of August. You should not start making your game until then. Even if you think you have no chance of winning, you're encouraged to enter - it's as much a forum activity as a contest.

Absolutely no information about your game should be shared with anyone until the competition and voting has ended. Please reply to this post if you intend to take part, but don't give any idea of what your game will be about.

Good luck and have fun

Aren't these rules a little contradictory? Or am I misreading them?

Ah, yes. Didn't read through that line carefully enough before changing it. It's fixed now.

To clarify: There is no maximum team size.

That's unfortunate; I was hoping we would stick with last year's rule that did allow for public/open content. I'm afraid this will make it hard for me to participate; could we please have the earlier rule (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=44094) back that has no such restriction?

Last OROW's rules were exactly like that, no premade content. Why don't you team up with someone who can do art or music?

The last OROW (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=44094) had only three restrictions: (1) use AGS, (2) one room, but can have cutscenes, (3) must be anonymous. No rules about content that I could find.

Apologies, I didn't actually realize that rule had changed between orow 7 and 8.
The last OROW is here btw: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=48409.0

I've been having some neck pains so I made this thread really quickly, but maybe I didn't think through the rules thouroughly. I'm see no problem with using open source stuff, as long as it's transparent. So I'll change that, espetially since I kinda promised you that would be okay.

I've read through the rules like 8 times now, so no more changes after this.

This was not last OROW. Last OROW (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=48409.0 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=48409.0)) had the rule with no premade material and you participated. So either you were fine with this limitation back then or you cheated.

Entries may use content from any source, including pre-made.
I think this should be limited to public available material.

Ah, yes. That's what I meant but not what I wrote. So that's the final change I make to the rules (I hope), thank you :)

Yea last time I quite enjoyed the fact that I even had to make my own sound effects, but, in truth, when we only have a week to make something, I think using things like publicly available free sound effects allows better games to be made and better graphics to be created, so I'm fine with this rule.

Obviously no pre-made stuff apart from modules etc I agree with as well as that's kind of missing the point of a Game Jam if you can make it all beforehand! ;)

And so we meet again at last, Alex!

Nice of you to still recall our philosophical dates together (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=52517.msg636518350#msg636518350). I too remember when your spoke to me in that whispered, sizzling voice that sounded exactly like a cheap drink... Or was it the booze container that mysteriously talked with your voice? My memory is kind of hazy.

We had quite the discussions, I recall.  But that was MAGS, a languid and tranquil competition, where the hours seem to draw out like long summer days.  In OROW there will be no time for words -only action! 8-)

When it reaches zero I'll announce the theme and the madness begins.

That's one of the disadvantages of OROW (besides sleep deprivation and excessive consumption of caffeine) - since it is all super secret you cannot share your sorrows with fellow participants.

So I will just pat you on the back to give you a bit of comfort :)

I'm right with you there bro!

I've also been writing reviews of each game and going to post them now that I've finished the whole batch (more or less):

All my STAR ratings are out of a possible maximum of 5 STARS:

SPOILERS WARNING!!! DO NOT OPEN ANY HIDDEN SECTIONS UNLESS YOU HAVE PLAYED THE GAME ALREADY OR DO NOT PLAN TO AT ALL:

Alien Escapades:

Spoiler

The game just looks AMAZING! And the curving effect on the asteroid you are on is simply wonderous! BUT the author did not stop there:

The walkcycle of the main character with his alien biology is a treat to watch...and thank god for that because the player is going to be watching it a LOT as you try to figure out what you are supposed to be doing...

Which is hindered by the fact that you can hardly understand what the characters are saying...As a native english speaker I could only figure out about half of what was being said...So the game might be unplayable for non native english speakers...

BUT...I do like the intrigue the game introduces in that you, as the player, are trying to figure out what the aliens are saying...This is a game mechanic I have never seen before...

Also, the nice ironic ending of the game is a great piece of story-telling...

UPDATE (AND SUPER-SPOILER WARNING!!! READ AT ONE'S OWN RISK):
Spoiler
I've just realized that this game is part of a crossover story in this OROW...Which I don't think has ever been done before in an AGS competition!!! Gotta add an extra STAR rating for that...
[close]

I rate this game: 4 STARS (BUT +1 DUE TO THE HIDDEN THINGY ABOVE WHICH IS A SUPER-SPOILER SO VIEW AT ONE'S OWN RISK!!!) SO:
5 STARS
[close]

Cornelius Cat in The Uncontrollable Pest:

Spoiler

When I tried running this game in its default configuration nothing made sense...

But the game seemed interesting enough that I went back and changed the graphics setting and suddenly it all worked...

And thank god for that because this game was great!

The author even managed to get around not having the time to code two following characters at a time with story points that totally made sense...

The puppet-theatre setting and the actual sets made and photographed adds so much charm to this project...

And the final reveal, while predictable, is still very satisfying...

I rate this game: 3 STARS
[close]

Crash CourseRC1:

Spoiler

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

One of the funniest games of the competition and also I believe the first ever:

SUPER-SPOILER BELOW...VIEW AT OWN RISK!!!
Spoiler
Crossover episodes in an AGS games competition
[close]

I'm pretty sure I know who is behind it and am going to message them right now congratulating them on what they pulled off!!!

This is going to go down in AGS history!!!
I rate this game: 4 STARS (BUT +1 DUE TO THE HIDDEN THINGY ABOVE WHICH IS A SUPER-SPOILER SO VIEW AT ONE'S OWN RISK!!! SO:
5 STARS

[close]

Dislocation:

Spoiler

I love the look of this game and the interplay between the two characters.

I feel there was supposed to be a lot more story to the game, but in the end it just could not get completed.

The game actually crashes at the end and I had to look through threads to find out that this is the way it actually ends...

I hope this game gets developed more and gets a full finished release as I was so invested in solving the mystery...

I rate this game: 2 STARS
[close]

FlopHouse:

Spoiler

OMG...Just WOW!!!

THIS game is amazing!!! I can pretty easily guess who made this game and I must say that every single talent of each member shines through in the finished product!

I did encounter several bugs while playing the game that made me have to restart but I honestly did not care...I just wanted to restart as fast as possible and see what would happen to our two extremely well fleshed out characters...

I'm going to play this game several more times just to find all the secrets and different endings...

But dev guy(s): Please either turn off the f5 to save game or provide a load game button as that drove me crazy!

I rate this game: 5 STARS
[close]

Hybrid:

Spoiler

A very strong release. The retro-adventure game graphics style is a HUGE plus.

The story gets disturbing very fast once you figure out what it is you are supposed to be doing and the gore factor grows and grows which might leave some players disconnected from the story and thinking "I don't actually want to be doing this..."

But not me!!! I personally slice open monkeys' heads and scoop out their brains as a hobby so I could totally identify with the main character!!!

I rate this game: 4 STARS
[close]

Rogered:

Spoiler

Hmmmmm...I'm on the fence about this entry...3 stars or 2?

I found a lot of the gameplay quite directionless and it took me a long time to actually figure out what I was supposed to be doing.

Once I actually found my "guide" through much trial and error I was then presented with a quest that took me much wandering around to find the goal. And even then I was not that satisfied with having found it as it seemed quite a random pixel hunt.

But then I actually started getting invested in beating the game and my "douche" of a guide. I guess the game annoyed me to just the right level that I wanted to crush it by winning.

I'm glad I did finally beat the game and enjoyed its meta qualities quite a bit...

But in the end, a lack of polish and a rushed feel on what could be developed into a really interesting gaming experience pushed my final score to:

I rate this game: 2 STARS
[close]

Sunrise Paradise:

Spoiler

I found this game to be a very nice interactive graphic novel which I believe was the intention of the author.

I really cared about the main character mostly because of the gorgeous detail put into her facial expressions throughout every stage of the game...

I laughed when I got the foil-wrapped papers and enjoyed the choice of how to use either that or the other more obvious thing...The former was the more fun!!!

I felt there was much more of a world awaiting our heroine that could not be fully described in the space of one week.

I need more!!!

I rate this game: 4 STARS
[close]

The Quiet Game:

Spoiler

The voice acting!

THE VOICE ACTING!!!

It's soooooo funny and the characters that the voices are coming from are soooo fitting!!!

That being said: The lack of any way to control the game settings meant that I was forced to play the game in fullscreen and in a size outside of what my crappy old computer could handle.

This meant that I could only spring a few of the traps in time. And also I had bugs when clicking on the dog and the birds where the main character reverts to the default AGS reply of "I don't want to have that" and then the game cannot progress...

But I did remember what to do and what not to do and played the game through to the end. And I was totally charmed by the last bit of audio where you hear the game devs just laughing about the whole thing...SO:

I rate this game: 3 STARS
[close]

UNCONTROLLED:

Spoiler

It made me laugh and the animation was really good so:

I rate this "game": 2 STARS
[close]

So finally I have:
Spoiler
3 games rated at 5 STARS...

Time to vote I guess...

It's ripping my soul in two but I know which one I must vote for at the end of the day...

EDIT: Ah...now that I have seen the voting structure it makes it much easier to deal with...And I have made peace with my conscience...

VOTED!!!

@ Cornelis Cat author: I switched the graphics driver option to the other one...I forgot which is which right now but whichever the default was: It made the game unplayable on my system...All the graphics were in the wrong place and there were huge black gaps between the house area and the cornfield area...All the hotspots did not line up with what they were supposed to be...Mind you, I am playing on a very old computer so I think that might be the problem. My first experience with the broken game on my end is not reflected in my final score of the game...It is a great game and I would be very interested in hearing the backstory of how it was created once your identity can be revealed (although I think I might know who you are...)

@ Rogered author: So wait, what? You made the game in just one day? So it was more a OROD than a OROW thing for you? That is an impressive achievement on its own and shows quite a bit of bravery in submitting the game when you knew you were going up against folks that had worked on their entries for the whole week.

I wouldn't realy say I was brave just more wanting to get a game release out there than anything else realy but thanks for the kudos and it just realy makes me feel good that people have played my game even if they only finished it because it annoyed then enough (laugh)

My 'reviews' aren't quite as detailed as yours, Mandle. Mine are more bullet point notes with a little scoring system. 4 more to play which I should hopefully get done this morning :-)

Re: Cornelius Cat
Spoiler

It also looked funny on my screen when I ran it on it's default setting. It came up in a box and I noticed that the speech texts was going off to the side. It was only when I switched to 'match my screen' mode (or something) I saw the outer parts of the screen, including the puppet theatre border. So it seems that the 'windowed mode' was simply showing a windowed-off section of the whole image rather than a smaller version of it.

If that makes sense (if not, I can give a screenshot a but later.)

Voted.  I had a few graphical problems along the way, but nothing I couldn't sort out with Winsetup (or in its absence, Saurabh's magical .dlls (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=46598.0) (roll)).  As a participant I don't feel as if I can leave specific feedback at this time without compromising our game in the process, but generally I have to say this was a strong clutch of games given the constraints of the competition.  I thought over half of them were serious contenders for the top spot, and agonized over my votes (actually switched my best-game choice back and forth 2-3 times before finally clicking submit).  Great work everyone!

@Mandle: Hilarious and insightful reviews!

@Stu+: Where do I read yours? (or are you not done yet?)

Okay. Here are my mini-reviews. Really cracking bunch of games, I must say. I'm sad not to have been able to join in, but I have enjoyed the fruits a lot. Thank you to everyone who participated.

These 'reviews' are really just notes, initially in the form of bullet points next to a number of headings which I have now written up into sentences and converted my scores into percentages (they were originally scores out of 25 based on 5 possible points for 5 different categories). These were simply to help me choose a "best" one, so the percentages don't necessarily mean much unless you're the person who got the highest, because it means I voted for you :-)

Also, by way of disclaimer, there are two games which I have not been able to finish. I have still tried to judge them as fairly (even leniently) as possible.

Spoiler
Dislocation
Spoiler
My pick of the bunch.
The art and character design are gorgeous despite one or two minor visual glitches. The music is very appropriate and some well-chosen sound effects really add icing to this cake. The central mystery is over all too soon and the puzzles were clever, though not too challenging. The star of the show is the dialogue between the main character Bohr and his partner. They have really good banter that I would love to see in a future game... although without spoiling anything, any future game would probably have to be a prequel :-/

Score: 76%
[close]
Sunrise Paradise
Spoiler
This game also has some lovely artwork. The characters are especially pleasing though they would look nicer in a hgiher resolution. The music is really nice, especially in the first half of the game. The story is great and the writing is solid, though I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry at the uncle's get-out-of-jail-free card with regards to the game's flagrant flouting of the one-room rule. Sunrise Paradise has nice mix of inventory- and choice-based gameplay, some solid characters. Of the ten entries, this is the game I feel most deserves some expansion, which is exactly how I felt after Foundations. They both have a girl going off behind some wall into an unknown, post-apocalyptic city.

Score: 72%
[close]
Cornelius Cat in The Uncontrollable Pest
Spoiler
The gorgeous handmade puppets and backgrounds make this one of the prettiest entries in this contest from the start. The story is humourous but rather simple fare. The puzzles are not particularly challenging but they are fun. Luring Blue Cup to the river was a highlight. The music was nice but the game could have benefited from one or two sound effects. The characters are great. I want to see more games from this pair and Blue Cup. The puppets are made. there are no excuses ;-)

Score: 68%
[close]
Hybrid
Spoiler
This is a beautiful game too. and there are some great visual effects. The main music is good. There are one or two sound effects, but I spotted some missed opportunities for some more. The game is possibly the most atmospheric of the bunch, and the idea is great but I feel it is lacking some... jenesaisquoi. The main character was such a generic scientist type, the tranquilized monkey had just as much charm. That said, I did give extra "gore points" and I enjoyed the final showdown (for lack of a better word) with the monkey-badger. Also there was a nice range of puzzles.

Score: 64%
[close]
FlopHouse
Spoiler
The artwork in this game is basic but nice, with some fun animations. The music is charming and it was nice to hear some sound effects. The idea is clever and the dialogue is fun. The highlight for me is the wide variety of often brilliant puzzles, but unfortunately some rather nasty bugs eventually rendered this game unwinnable (on this playthrough at least). The two main characters are a little bland but they are backed up by a cracking supporting cast. The creepy neighbour leering through next-door's curtains is my favouite character of OROW 9. Just so relatable, you know.

Score: 56%
[close]
Rogered
Spoiler
No expense was spent on the visuals for Rogered, but it's somewhat pleasing anyway. At first I thought this was a joke game, until I realised what to do. Then it became a matter of walking to the right parts of the screen hoovering up relevant objects and  setting off events, so there's not a lot to it and there's not really much to the story but there are some good jokes and the dialogue with the devil is particularly funny. An entertaining few minutes.

Score: 52%
[close]
Alien Escapade
Spoiler
This game has very pleasing graphics; gorgeous alien planet and character design. The bending effect is a nice touch, though I had to turn off after a while as it was making me dizzy. The main music is really good. Reminiscent of the Hitchhiker's Guide theme. I felt that there was a really strong central puzzle to be solved. Unfortunately, the unreadable alien text, which seemed like a good idea until I realised it was actually partially readable, which had the effect of frustrating me to the point where I wasn't enjoying the game. I got stuck and didn't seem to be able to save it, so I gave up after my third go.

Score: 48%
[close]
Crash Course
Spoiler
This game has very pleasant background and character art and some perfect dramatic music for the 'countdown' atmosphere. The story itself is a bit basic but nonetheless fun. The characters share some enjoyable, although there's not much else to them. I was a bit let down by having this room full of things to click on but ultimately nothing to do. There are no puzzles to speak of at all and gameplay consists of waiting for the story to tell itself while clicking on things like an interactive loading screen.

Score: 48%
[close]
The Quiet Game
Spoiler
This game's strongest point was the gameplay. I found great satisfaction in finding new ways to kill and hurt the annoying jackass. And gosh he was annoying. This game deserves kudos for being the only one with voice acting, but unfortunately it got very off-putting very quickly.  I guess that was the point, so in that respect it did its job well. Also he couldn't decide if he was addressing the player or the game designer. I hated the main character so hard, but the fact that he drew any emotion out of me at all is surely worth a couple of points.

Score: 40%

UNCONTROLLABLE
Spoiler
Well.  It has a well-drawn Iron man in it and I like Iron Man and I like well-drawn things.

I'm not good at word speak enough to write reviews do. But I did enjoy all these entries, fantastic job everyone! It made hosting an absolute pleasure seeing these great entries roll in :)

In stead of reviews I did some quick LPs that I'll be uploading throughout the rest of the week. I'll post a link when it's done.

I just watched your LP of Alien Escapades and it was as entertaining as always when watching your stuff.

I thought I would add (SPOILER ALERT!!!):
Spoiler
The reason you got an "infinite" supply of the fungus thingies was because you found that left-over hotspot earlier that you could use the hand icon on. This was actually a hotspot that the devs forgot to turn off when you picked the fungus that used to be there so the game just kept giving them to you every time you clicked.

You are only supposed to have one less than the actual number of exhaust vents which means to find the proper vent you have to slog your way around the planet a LOT pulling them out and putting them back in the vents. You got lucky in that the way you glitched the game meant you could do trial and error a LOT easier by having replacement fungus on hand at all times.

Actually I also assumed that the wife alien was saying that she wanted to go to Earth, but what she is really saying is more like "It's getting closer!!!" and "DO SOMETHING!!!" which took me forever to figure out. She wants the husband to find a way so that their asteroid home will completely miss the Earth and thus they won't die, coincidentally saving the Earth from mass devastation at the same time, not that they care about that...

SPOILER ALERT(DO NOT READ THE HIDDEN SECTION BELOW IF YOU HAVE NOT YET PLAYED "CRASH COURSE RC1"):
Spoiler

I believe this is also a crossover game with another OROW entry which involves an asteroid about to hit Earth but which changes its course mysteriously at the last moment: Crash Course RC1...

If this is true then an amazing feat was pulled off during this OROWS, and...if it's just coincidence then it's one of the most AMAZING coincidences of all freakin' time!!!

Nice LPs Bulbapuck!

And on Alien Escapades I would like to also add that(spolier ahead):
Spoiler

The reason you can't pick up the "mushrooms" from the start, is cause he has no reason to do so (am guessing that's what he said anyway (laugh) ). Only after interacting with the monitor you are allowed to pick them up. I hadn't realized that at the time I gave the clue actually, only got it on my second run with the game. ;)

Thank you all for entering and voting, it made my part as the host so much fun to do :)

There was an option to leave a comment when voting, some were messages to me but every comment that were about the games was very positive, often surprised at how great the quality of this OROW was. I can only agree, you guys did a fantastic job.

Wow!!! My OROD (One Room One Day) entry actually won something?! I realized that the game's only real strength was going to be the interplay between characters. That is what I focused on a lot so I'm assuming it paid off and that's what the win in that particular category means. I guess something semi-passable can be made in a single 17 hours sitting on the final day of the contest. It was also fun writing a bad-ish review for my own game and talking to myself in forums via Bulbapuck...Cheers Bulbapuck for being a good sport and letting me do that (laugh)

Congratz to all winners especially the Flophouse creators for top prize! Very well deserved!

But for me I guess the most amazing feat is the double entry (and even crossover) games by Wyz, Baron and Handsfree!!! Truly an incredible thing to make two high-quality entries in a single week AND have their stories crossover! I doubt this has been done before and probably will never be attempted ever again. You guys are insane to even try it but awesome as hell to actually pull it off.

So...great fun was had by myself! I couldn't resist being a part of the craziness even though I knew I only had one free day to put anything together. I'm so glad that I did though. Most fun I've had at AGS to date!!!

In OROW 8 something similar happened actually. Ben304 and Grundislav made two games in the same universe that was a prelude for a larger game they were collaborating on. Still, an incredible feat to be sure. Funny thing is, you drew the parallel between those two games before I did, and I knew they were from the same creators xD

Congratulations on winning the best concept Mandle :)

Congratulations to all winners, good show all around!

I want to personally praise Dislocation, which seems to not have won any popularity votes, but it definitely won my heart. Wow, now lets get this crazy ride to a conclusion! 8-0

First of all I want to thank Bulbapuck greatly for his hard work organizing this and then also finding time to do LPs; it has been a blast and you did an amazing job!

Secondly I want to thank my fellow OROWneers uhm OROWnauts? erm... colleagues for all those great entries: I really had a lot of fun playing them!

Thirdly: anyone who played and voted: Thank you all! I hope you had as much fun as I had.

And lastly well this is something special, you see our entry was special as Mandle already guessed:

What you might not have known
We (Baron, Handsfree and I) made two games! This was not coincidental there was something to it!
Spoiler

Your games are connected!?
- Yes see, crossover games have been done before but what we did was a cross-game puzzle so a puzzle spanning two games! To my knowledge that has not been done before which was why it was so tempting to do. The OROW was the perfect setting for this since both games would have been played without the link immediately be clear. We actually went through some trouble to make the games as disconnected as possible like the style, feel and we even used different versions of AGS for the games. :P

Was it hard to connect the games?
- Well I can only guess it was but we left a few breadcrumbs (see below).

What was the cross-game puzzle like.
We made Crash Course as a joke game; there was no way to really have influence on the outcome of the story which is connected to the theme: uncontrollable. This game however contains a very important hint for Alien Escapade.

Was the game beatable without knowing about this link?
- Yes, but it would have required some brute-forcing. There was simply one piece of the puzzle missing which would have made it easier to solve knowing about the link.

So what is this piece of the puzzle?
- If you really must know:
Spoiler

In alien escapade after making the core boil the right set of vents must be plugged. When all mushrooms are picked up you will find out you are one short; this is to hint that only one vent must be left open. The map shows which hole to leave open but this map is actually UPSIDE DOWN! Yes the aliens read upside down but you can not know about this until you play Crash course. Here the mayor is handed a chart that bears some similarities to the alien map but guess what: he is holding it upside down. This is made clear to the player and should hint that the map in the other game should have been read upside down as well. There! now you know! :)
[close]

So what are these breadcrumbs that link the games together?
Well it is actually quite clear the stories are connected once you see the link. The aliens live on an asteroid that is uncontrollable and about to crash on a familiar looking planet. They change course just in time. This is in fact the asteroid the mayor has to deal with and when you played both games you are in fact the reason why it did not crash leaving the situation not entirely uncontrollable after all. :D
But more generally, a list of breadcrumbs:
Spoiler

  • The planet in the background of AE is earth.
  • The asteroid in CC changes course without reason to.
  • The mayor mentions he likes 'vaping' and it will solve all problems.
  • The map in AE and the chart in CC have a similar colour scheme and both feature a round object.
  • When looking at the picture in CC the mayor mentioned his wife would only shout and flings things at his head,... just like the alien wife did in AE.
  • One of the books in the mayor's office refers to aliens.
  • But my personal favourite is: both the mayor and the alien wear a top hat! (laugh)
*looks at Baron and Handsfree* Did I forget any?

So we are going to give a medal to whoever figured this out the first!
So I'm proudly presenting on behalf of our team the U-asteroid medal for impressive out-of-the-box puzzle solving:

And well we're giving it to Mandle! Congrats!

Geez this OROW sure had some deception going on: well played Mandle: you also did the thing were you reviewed your own game making it virtually impossible to guess you made it. Well played! :D

And of course I also want to congratulate all winners with a special cheer to Team Party Wagon. Good job all!

I should point this out as it isn't shown on the top 3 lists, "Dislocation" actually scored fairly high in all categories, and hence it takes a lot of 4th place finishes. Same goes for "Sunrise Paradise". For instance they tied for 4th in the "Best game" category just 2 votes behind the 3rd place finisher.

Also, thank you Wyz and Stupot! It was a real pleasure organizing this :)

For the record, we had a secret fourth member: IntenseDegree, who did the music for our game on very, very short notice.

I now plan to take our prize money and get the station wagon tricked out into the sweet ride it was always destined to be. Then we're gonna drive this thing from Texas to Australia, where no doubt the BlueCupTools podcast awaits with baited breath to interview us!

Congratulations people, great work!!

I think having a theme turned out to be a good choice as it created a really nice thematic bundle. I really enjoyed how a lot of participants tried new things and moved away from the classic Sierra/Lucasarts feel. Is this what the future looks like??? :=

A little attempt at writing some reviews:

Spoiler

Alien Escapade:
I'm sad to say I never finished this one properly - every time I played it, I managed to click on something that took the game straight to the ending scene. But I had fun watching Bulbapuck's let's play and seeing how it was supposed to be played. The screen bending thing looked really impressive, and the graphics were cute, and that one puzzle also wasn't bad at all!

Cornelius Cat:
That seemed like a great kids' game! The finger puppets and their little jumping up and down when they talked were really adorable, and the water effect also looked pretty cool. I wouldn't mind a better indication of the hotspots (like a glowing paw, or the text for the hotspot names being a bit bigger/not right at the bottom of the screen), or maybe a more personal design of the dialog options. I'm kind of embarrassed to say I didn't expect that twist at the end at all! 8-)

Crash Course:
What I liked about this game was that the dramatic music and the countdown timer gave it a real sense of urgency. Shame about the lack of puzzles, though. The graphics looked pretty nice and polished (maybe apart from that mayor's face that might give me nightmares ;)).

Dislocation:
Some pretty cool sci-fi themes in there, and quite charming graphics and animations, full of little details. I had fun interacting with the main computer, but I kind of cringed talking to that clichéd hipster girl. :-D

Flophouse Hijinks:
It wasn't difficult to guess who made that one. :P
Apart from really good writing all the way through, I was impressed with the sheer amount of puzzles you managed to squeeze in that one room. Shame about a few potentially game-ending bugs. The graphics looked like there were 2 or 3 people working on them at the same time. ;-D But most of them looked really nice, with some really cool animations in there. It was also the most relatable of all the games (granted, I don't have any kinky girl-roommates or crazy Texan landlords, but I probably have a bunch of Upper Slobodian neighbours!)

Hybrid:
My personal favourite. Honestly, I'm rather surprised it didn't even make it into the top three. :undecided:
Really, it could easily pass for a demo of a proper commercial release. The graphics were breathtaking, the game was consistently good (I didn't come across any bugs), it was immersive, well-written and had some really disturbing sound effects! The only possible downside (and even that's just a matter of opinion) was that it didn't seem to bring much new to the table in terms of original game design. But never mind that! Please team up again in the future and make a longer game together! Don't give up, you're the true winning combo! ;)

Rogered:
I didn't think this one was too confusing once you got into it. I quite enjoyed the clear sense of direction and the meta qualities of the game, and was sad to see it finish so soon. Bonus points for being so damn stelthy about being the game author. I could never guess, not even with all the Japanese menus. (At the time, I thought you were only using that to justify the appearance of the apple fruit in one of the puzzles :))

The Quiet Game:
This game was hilarious just for its brilliant voice acting and writing (unless it was mostly improvised, in which case it's even more impressive). There seemed to be quite a few ways in which to break the game, so that was a bit of a downside, and the graphics seemed a bit rough around the edges. But it was fun. Even made me burst into uncontrollable laughter once or twice!

Uncontrollable:
The first 3 seconds were AMAZING!! I hoped that restarting the game might generate a different screen, though.

Thanks Mandle, Stupot and AprilSkies for your lovely comments, and thanks Bulbapuck for a hilarious let's play! I was pretty much laughing all the way through.

Stupot, I haven't played Foundations until just after you mentioned it, but yeah, I can see a bunch of similarities now! Sorry Matt Frith! Amazing game, by the way. ;)

Me and Ultra Magnus had a really fun week, working pretty much day and night on the game and breaking the boundaries of our usual, extremely slow workflow. It was really a great experience and we're already thinking about how to expand on the game (if anyone will be interested in that :P), but for now, we'll probably fix a few things and upload it as a demo.

What a great OROW!

First of all, thanks to Bulbapuck for organising this - you did a great job as a host!

Thanks to qptain Nemo for choosing such an inspiring topic.

Congratulations to the winners and congrats to everyone who participated and finished a game within one week. I think it's great that so many different games won in the various categories. This emphasises the overall high quality of all entries. From a player's point of view, I'm also happy that all the games were adventure games in one way or another. From the given topic I was afraid that there would be mostly code-heavy non-adventure games in this competition but you awesome guys proved me wrong!

Thanks to everone who played my game and maybe even voted for it! I had lots of fun crafting all the items and I'm glad that many of you seemed to enjoy the result. I also want to point out that raeff helped me a lot by making all the photos required for characters, backgrounds and the various animation frames and object states.
Please note that the music was taken from public resource, namely from Kevin MacLeod's http://incompetech.com/, as mentioned in the credits. I can only take credit for listening to music from his archive and picking a tune :P.

I'll write some short reviews later on.

You made those little puppets! Those things really made that game stand out from the crowd. Great work! The plastic wrap water was a nice touch too. :cheesy:

Thanks! In the first draft of the script there was even a black and white cow, but it was later replaced by Cuppit.

And if Aardman uses cling film for water, I can do that as well ;)

A childhood's worth of Augsburger Puppenkiste makes me question if there's any other way to make water AT ALL. I really loved the visuals in that game, and you got to some great length with the detail too. The filled Cuppit looked downright adorable.

Also, thanks to everyone who got a little smile out of Uncontrollable. It is by no means a serious entry but at least it is as uncontrollable as it could ever be. Fun fact, for three days I was making a physics-based game where Iron Man had to put a cork into a bottle, which did not work because the bottle was UNSTOPPERABLE. Since the theme was not unstoppable, I had to stop. Control was seriously lost at that point.
That I actually made first place in the ONLY category my entry could even qualify for makes me a very happy Ghost indeed.

Also, the animations of the BASS template girl in FLOPHOUSE cracked me up so hard. Most awesome walkcycle ever. Even better than Ben There Dan That.

Awesome comp fellas!  I enjoyed playing all the games, there was a lot of originality and risk-taking on display.  Thanks to Bulbapuck for hosting and my teammates for a fun week of developing.  My caffeine jitters are just now subsiding.

EDIT: Thanks Ghost, most of the sprite animations were based on ideas that we came up with as a group.

First off, awesome jobs all around, my fellow caffeine fiends!  Caf-fiends!  Big thanks to Bulbapuck for hosting and diligent, highly entertaining playthroughs (I particular lol'ed at your voicing of Dislocation's 'Detective Bohr'.  Spot on, bro, we'll keep you in the loop for voice acting on Neofeud. :) )  Also I really enjoyed playing all of the entries.  Laughed, cried, spat Rockstar on my laptop, all that good stuff.  Let me know if any Kickstarters are in the works!

I'd also like to give a special props to Sunrise Paradise.  I felt like the designers really put themselves in it, and it gets the Feels award from me.

I want to personally praise Dislocation, which seems to not have won any popularity votes, but it definitely won my heart. The cheeky defiant intentionally idiotic humor completely won me over and firmly planted a grin on my face. In other words I loved it the most. Would love to see more of that silliness.

Thanks qptain Nemo!  There is at least 2x more silliness in the fully materialized version of Dislocation (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1962/#comments), which I regret falling short of finishing in time for the OROW 2015 due date.  I felt pretty crap knowing that Bohr and Belle would run through all that cheeky idiotic banter and yet the OROW players would never find out who the mysterious quantum murderer was until AFTER the week of OROW voting!

Having got 9/10 of the work done in the final 36 hours, it was a case of tortoise-and-hare syndrome, at least on my end.  I'll try to be more slow-n-steady next time!

Anyway, here's another link to the complete version of Dislocation (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1962/#comments).

Thanks also Stupot for playing and the shining review of the game, despite its faults!  And to answer your earlier question: we'll see about a sequel / prequel.  You know these quantum events are a crapshoot: anything can happen ;)

congrats to all other winners!

Thanks to Bulbapuck for hosting this OROW, what weird fun this is!

Thanks to everyone who voted for Hybrid for the gfx, yeah, I spent quite some effort on this :D

Thanks to yamipanda for getting along with my weird ideas and constant nagging and new animation frames here and changes there. Team Awesome rocks! :D

I liked Conelius the cat the pbest, the cute puppets, the funny soundtrack and the isane plottwist did it for me.

props, kudos, hattips, respect, what have you to Wyz, Baron and Handsfree for the 2 connected games and the effort to obscure this. Even using 2 different AGS version, I'd never suspected these games to be from the same team, even if you had used the same AGS version and used the same characters. The alien language made alien escapade a completely different game to me. Cool beans ;-D

And well we're giving it to Mandle! Congrats!

Geez this OROW sure had some deception going on: well played Mandle: you also did the thing were you reviewed your own game making it virtually impossible to guess you made it. Well played! :D

AWESOME!!! I feel like Wreckit Ralph!!! Finally got a real medal!!! I'll be putting it on ASAP!

The trickiest part of my "deception" was writing the "replies" from "the creator of Rogered" that Bulbapuck posted for me in this thread. I had to make sure I didn't get caught by writing/punctuation styles and even threw in some consistant spelling mistakes of words I can actually spell right, and a comment about having finally released my first AGS game... I felt a bit creepy talking to myself in the forums but it was all in fun and absolutely not indicative of a deeper underlying mental problem at all...

Right, me?

/me says "Right!"

If Mandle gets a medal for figuring out the Alien Escapades/Crash Course deception, I should get one for figuring out his Rogered lie. I PMed him during voting with my suspicions, which were largely based on the fact that the in-game OS is the Japanese version of Windows XP (there aren't many of us in Japan and I knew I didn't make it).

While I'm mentioning AE and CC, knowing what I know now about how they are connected, it kind of makes some of my criticisms invalid.
Spoiler
My main gripe with CC was that there were no puzzles to speak of, but as it turns out, playing AE kind of is the solution to CC which is it's own kind of genius. My main problem with AE wasn't really the game itself, just the fact that I couldn't understand what the hell I was supposed to do.
[close]
After having seen Bulbapuck's LP and read Wyz's explanation of how it ties to CC, I want to add a few retroactive points to my scores for those games.

P.S I'd love to play a version of AE where the text is in a more... traditional font. It shouldn't be too hard to make some kind of toggle key that switches between the alien language and English.

As promised, here are some mini-reviews from me. I added some + and - for each game. As I was really amazed by the high quality of the entries, the - are mostly minor suggestions or issues.

Spoiler

Alien Escapade
+ Great graphics and music, the combination of them gave me a real DotT-feel. Bending the screen was an awesome idea and the win for best scripting is well deserved. My favourite in the graphics category.
- I had no idea what to do. The weird font was a unique idea and somehow fitted the theme, but it also reduced enjoyment. I even tried to run winsetup.exe again and looked for the language option "English" but alas, it was not there. Even with knowing that the games are interconnected the puzzle does not make sense at all. This is NOT a matter of upside down but the open vent was opposite the tent.

Crash Course
+ Super-cute graphics, funny story and great characters. That stereotypical politician was hilarious. This game also did the best interpretation of the theme, because it was really uncontrollable. The timer added a feel of time pressure.
- As much as the game fitted the theme there was no actual gameplay, which somehow reduced the fun it made. Also the move in the card game was completely pointless ;)

Dislocation
+ I enjoyed the funny writing and interesting ending (to me it was clear, that this was the end of the game and not a crash). The graphics were nice although the room felt a bit empty.
- There were some glitches (being able to take the pink stuff twice, dialog for already solved puzzle, walkable areas) but nothing really important.

Flophouse Hijinks
+ Funny dialogs and I did like the characters with different personality. There was a lot to do and interact with.
- The graphics are rather sloppy and there are also several bugs.

Hybrid
+ Great retro graphics and music and a weird setting for a game. I enjoyed the classic puzzles and removing the brain with a spoon :P I voted for Hybrid as best game.
- Save does not work although it is mentioned in the intro screen and you can die.

Rogered
+ Best concept. Using the IME as apple made me crack up. The game reminds me a bit of META (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/653/ (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/653/)) which is also the origin of Cuppit, who appeared in my game as Big Blue Cup. So in a way we made some kind of unintentional cross-over as well :P
- It feels a bit rushed and directionless with some random pixel hunts.

Sunrise Paradise
+ Interesting setting and moving story. The pretty graphics and facial expressions add a lot.
- I voted for this game in the "Worst abuse of the theme" category because it has nothing to do with "One room".

The Quiet Game
+ Hilarious voice acting and fun concept. Loved those random rants.
- There is no winsetup.exe and the game is buggy.

UNCONTROLLABLE
+ Pretty graphics and funny
- Actually, it was not random at all. I started the game several times, hoping that I would get a different screen but it did not happen. It should interchange with the pony cuddling the hero or something like that :P

But save does indeed work. F5 is save, F9 is LOAD!
We'll polish it up some more and making the font in the controls screen more readable is on the list now. Well, it was before, but time was running out...

This is NOT a matter of upside down but the open vent was opposite the tent.

I also thought that the double-triangle on the map was supposed to be the tent at first, but I think it was just an arrow supposed to indicate that the asteroid would move in that direction. An unlucky coincidence of similar shapes I think. Perhaps the double-triangle should be moved away a little from the surface of the asteroid? Or made more arrow-looking?

That is true, and I felt a bit bad for not keeping a promise. But to be honest, the game is not even uncontrollable. It's quit by a mouse click, which counts as control. So not only did I abuse the theme, I technically also defied it.
And maybe defiled it too.

Yeah.  As the artist responsible, I have to say that this was a somewhat muddled but deliberate attempt to get the player turned around.  The arrows on the map are indeed just directional arrows, which happen to look a lot like the tent (which logically could be set up anywhere).  Our original concept called for the map to be upside-down, with the hint indicating that you needed to  flip it for it to make sense coming from the Crash Course game (which attentive players would see as linked through all the bread crumbs mentioned above).  So the idea was to pair that knowledge with the sequence of stacks in the map (they are in sets of threes and fives) to realise that you have to leave the left-most stack of the opposite cluster of five unplugged for propulsion.  In retrospect, I think you have a point that this probably turns the player around one too many times (it's a good thing in wasn't a Blind Man's Bluff simulator... (roll)), but in the heat of the moment during our frantic design session it sounded like a good idea at the time. :)

We bit off much more than we could chew. We were attempting (via skype) to debug it literally an hour before the deadline. In hindsight, maybe we should have aimed smaller, but without that frantic panicked screaming and yelling at the end, OROW just isn't the same.

It also answers the age old question of whether or not Iron Man is a Brony.

You totally violated that theme, bro.  But it was into it, too.

Uncontrollable +1 worst abuse of theme.

I guess I'll do a few quick reviews too!

Spoiler

Alien Escapade
Best technical achievement with AGS, as far as I can tell.  Great art style.  Had no clue what to do, but it was fun running around the planet and talking to all of the denizens.

Crash Course
Got stuck in Solitaire, but that's my own bad for being dumb, possibly.  I like the mouse-based scroll effect.  Looked pretty interesting!

Flophouse Hijinks
Solid writing and funny writing, could be the start of a Tarantino movie or an HBO talkie.

Hybrid
Pixel art guru over here!  Really nice evocative lo-fi gore.  Blood dripping creeped me out!  Liked the soundtrack too, it fit right in.

Rogered
Sorry I couldn't quite figure this out but looked like it was going to be a really out-of-the-box fourth-wall-breaking fun fest.

Sunrise Paradise
Favorite of the bunch.  I bought the characters, especially with the comic-style facial expressions.  The little nuances like the condoms and the kid's specific degree of naivete sold it.  Even the cold corporate witch lady was believable.  Also the sci-fi concept was really well-thought-out and thought-provoking.

The Quiet Game
FRICKIN HILEEEEEEEERIOUS BRO.  HILEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERIOUS.

UNCONTROLLABLE
Cuteness award!

- I voted for this game in the "Worst abuse of the theme" category because it has nothing to do with "One room".

Haha, you saw right through it! I probably would've done the same if voting for my own game was an option. :P

@Cuiki, on the other hand, there is no room restriction in the AGS game database - you could (and should!) add an extended version of the game there ;). The OROW entry feels like it is the intro to a much longer story.

I've been reading all of your reviews about the quiet game and I'm so happy!
I was worried that the humor wouldn't really land too well and the glitches would put you guys off, but looks like I was wrong!
Thanks for all the kind words and support!
If you want to keep up with my most recent project "Project Lost", check it out here. http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=52631.0

A bit of a stretch from the quiet game but whatever. Thanks for everything you guys. I loved playing your games and we had a really good batch this year! Thanks.

The glitches bothered me only because I enjoyed the premise so much.  A guy talking smack who is foiled via booby traps set in motion by the user is a hilarious and inventive idea.  Sort of a fun variation on the trash-talking clown in a dunking booth theme.

Gfreezie: I hope you fix the glitches and bug and release a second version soon. I gave up since the game kept breaking. But was enjoying and would like to play it again, but bug free. ;)(nod)

I actually only ever attempted gameplay once.  The Quiet Game's anti-OROW/AGS-maker rant was too good to interrupt with point-n-clicking.

"You did this with a buddy!?"  LOLsquirts.

Honestly I dont see why not. Fixing the bugs is pretty simple. I do want to work on the timing of some events and maybe add some more. I had fantasized about making it into a full multi-level game at some point, but
I figured the speech would get dull after a few times and I do want to finish the project lost demo. Honestly I'm probably going to expand upon it in some way eventually. But expect a simple bug fix soon.
