Topic: Natural Disaster
This month's guidelines were set by DarkWater

Who doesn't love a good natural disaster movie and rooting for the character/s as they use their wits and what they find around them to try and figure out how to survive/escape from the situation they're in. Whether it be a tidal wave flips your luxury liner (The Poseidon Adventure), you're trapped in a flaming high-rise building (The Towering Inferno), you're hit by earthquakes/flooding (San Andreas, The Day After Tomorrow), or an avalanche has trapped you in a ski resort (Avalanche).
A natural disaster has befallen them, how do they handle it? Can they survive/escape?

* Doesn't not have to be an earth bound disaster, and can include a meteor hitting earth, space station/base on another planet (The Martian).
* Not post-apocalyptic or zombie survival, but can be an end of the world as we know it event.

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?board=10.0) are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive (http://www.mags-competition.info/?page=games). For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website. (http://www.mags-competition.info/)

WOW! That is an awesome theme!

I may have to throw caution to the hurricane-force wind and enter...

Not saying for sure though...I have a current project and work starts again soon...But, the theme is sooooo tempting...

Well...I have my game concept and finished drawing the scrolling sky sprite for my single, but dynamically changing background.

Oh, and I have a title:

Harry Kane Caine: Extreme Weather Reporter

(Character name spelling changed because, as CaptainD pointed out, there is a real-life soccer player with the name Harry Kane.)

Another great theme! Going to see if I can come up with anything worthwhile over the weekend and hopefully take part this month.

Awesome theme!

I wish I had time for it...
Still, I'll be glad to participate to any kind of brainstorming.

I hope we'll get plenty disaster games to play.

Good luck all!

Not at all...In fact I had to google them to even find out what sport they played (I'm not a huge ice-hockey fan. :P) And I see they have a player called Harry Kane...Well I guess there had to be someone with that name somewhere.

My character's name is just a pun on Hurricane: He is an extreme weather reporter and that is his screen name, chosen by himself for dramatic impact and all around macho-ness...

Amazingly it doesn't seem that the soccer player Harry Kane has the nickname "Hurricane" so I think I'm still good to go with the name. I'll just change the spelling to Harry Caine so people don't think there is a connection. Cheers for the heads-up!

I'm a Spurs fan. Harry Kane is doing great things for us at the moment. But I too am surprised that more people haven't embraced the obvious connnection. I'm sure some fans have, especially in the stadium, but I haven't heard any commentators or pundits mention it.

Anyway. I'm looking forward to hearing more about his meteorological adventures :-)

Alright, here we go!

In 'Prepared' you play a suburban survivalist father living in a middle American suburb in the 1960's. You've just finished a Do-It-Yourself fallout shelter in your backyard when a disaster warning comes on the radio. It's finally your time to shine! Spend the last few hours before the disaster strikes gathering supplies and, if time permits, your family.

I'm aiming for 'A Serious Man' meets 'Falling Down'.

I am not sure. I have an idea but I can't decide if it fits the theme.

"A tidal wave heading towards a small island (where a volcano is aboot to erupt) forces Batman to save the world by batcrashing the moon into that rift-thing from Pacific Rim (also there are alien invaders down there who put up a fight)."

Batman DOES count as a natural disaster, right?

I like the theme and I know enough being French and having undergone 2 times of natural disaster indondations home in a year .... suddenly I know a little about the song! But the major problem remains in effect, like many here I guess, time (I'm already on a big point and click in addition to my professional work) ... and I'm not very good at speaking English .. .. (thank you google translation) but I will leave me very tempted by this new adventure for my first contest here ... I'll think about the next few days! :)

Spent my entire weekend working out game mechanics and thinking up features I definitely won't have time for! Here's a mock-up of the UI and game map:

I'm hoping to have all of the background sketches done by the end of the week so I can put all of my time into scripting. It's going to be a primarily text based management sim, with you balancing your money, gas, time, and inventory. Thankfully the source material is appropriately insane. (laugh)

Thanks! But I think we've got this :-D ... our story is complete (the body count is in the thousands!), Cat is working on puzzles, dialogue and character sketches. I've started work on the background art, so far pretty happy with our title screen:

Ahhh Miez, that looks awesome!

I've been hacking away at this from all angles and got the time, money, and fuel scripts working properly, as well as a working service station (still a work in progress):

Right now the game is looking to be extremely short and I haven't figure out if I want to make it longer and more complex, or give the player more reason to replay it for a higher score. It's reminding me a lot of the bargain bin games I used to get for my Amiga like The Three Stooges or Detroit. :-D

Also, be on the lookout for a younger version of a certain nurse...

Almost have my background done to an ingame workable level, and I really want to stay up past 1AM (current time) and see how all the seperate parts interact, but a bad head cold and a sensible wife are both telling me it's time to hit the hay...

Post by: Mandle on Mon 11/04/2016 15:53:41
My cold has cleared finally, and so I tested my background tonight at a very crude level...And, at a very crude level, it is working quite nicely, except that I now realize I must enter the realm of hand-drawn liquid animation to get it behaving just right...And also apply some parabolic math to the scrolling function...

I so want to get on all that right now, but the sensible part of me (my wife) is telling me I should get some sleep...

I've fallen deep into the rabbit hole and spent my entire weekend creating some kind of calculator simulator. :-[

The game now calculates how much the weight of items in your car affects fuel economy, total calories and "hydration" currently in your main inventory and stockpile, and store shelves deplete their stock over time. It still needs some refinement but it's starting to feel like an actual game now! Next I need to allow the player to drop items off at home, and script the other three stores. Oh... and Gary could probably use some arms...

Here is the "Survivalist Log" that updates with side-quests, and tally's:

Snuck in some time today to work on background dynamics...No actualy gameplay exists and I do not even have a "Harry Caine" character sprite yet...

But, my entry is mainly an experiment in how to pull off a dynamic background so, even if that's the only thing I get done, I'll still be entering this MAGS...

Hopefully I actually get a game together though...

I started on the "Harry Caine" character sprite tonight...

It's the fully naked version, as I plan to layer his clothing on top, and I'm still not decided just yet whether to give him some visible junk to swing in the wind, or to mosaic it...

What does everyone think? Which is funnier? The full-frontal genital approach for the shock value, or the subtle, censored approach?

There is a third option that I may go with as well, but that's best left a secret I feel...

Not exactly the imagined gameplay, but pretty close:

Haven't had a lot of time to work on the game, but hopefully I will find it here and there to get it done, as I really love the basic slapstick comedy of those weather reporter dudes standing out, and risking their lives, in insane-force hurricanes while they try to make their 2-minutes-of-fame-reports for the usually sedate weather section of the news. Why not just stand somewhere safer, like inside a building with a good view to the outside right behind them, and say the exact same report?! I guess it's the only exciting thing a meteorologist reporter can do to have something to talk about when they meet up with the war-zone reporters at the yearly whatever...

Maybe I'm just a bit warped, but there is just something intrinsically hilarious about those reports for me...

Boy oh boy, multiplayer turned out to be a bit more of a nightmare than expected but we think we've got it stable at 64 players per instance! Thanks in no small part to the technical wizards at PhotonEngine... And just for good measure Cat decided to run AGS through her custom 3D API that allows you to - tada - play the scenario module on Oculus, Vive and Gear VR!

Of course the models need some work and the buildings have no textures yet but that's in the works.

Okaaaaay...it's a bunch of maps of the island, some 3D renders of helicopters, buildings, etc, some smoke overlays, a flying dragon silhouette, a page from a little girl's diary from the 90's, etc etc...

Lovely looking art by the way, but....erm....why are you posting it? Was it supposed to be the game itself and you linked to the wrong dropbox file?

Your password was very easy to guess by the way, but I'm suspecting it was supposed to be?

I'm so confused now! (laugh)

Well...I spent a few insanely fun hours this afternoon recording the voice acting for a certain mister HARRY CAINE EXTREME WEATHER REPORTER...

Japan is so great in that a random foreigner yelling in english attracts no (police) attention whatsoever even though all my neighbours heard my performances for sure...

If I had yelled "TASUKETTE!!!" or "KAJI!!!" at the same volume I'm sure the police and emergency services would have paid me an immediate visit...

So yeah...those are two very good Japanese words to commit to memory if you are ever over here and might need assistance in a potential disaster...

Oh...and speaking of disasters:

My game is shaping up to be a complete one!!!

And that's the best thing about this theme: No matter which your interpretation of that phrase is, it will always be true at the end of the day!

Except that maybe...just maybe...

Because of Golden Week here in Japan (A week off work at the start of May) I might just be able to pump the next 2 days into the game to get it reasonable...

God, why are MAGS so much fun?!

Just wasted spent another few hours doing voice recording, as it seems that this is going to be the major annoyance factor selling point for this game experience...

@Funkpanzer Ohhh, too bad. Is there not a chance you can finish it up today and tomorrow? Will you complete the game even if only after MAGS is over?

@Stupot Speaking of tomorrow: The deadline is 23:59 GMT, not japanese time, right? RIGHT???

@Mandle Looking forward to hearing your voice acting!
During Golden Week all tourist and travel things are crammed and exorbitantly priced anyway - there is nothing better to do than locking yourself in your room in front of the PC and make a game (at least, that's what you should tell Misa :-D)

I'm already in panic mode about our game. There is still sooo much to do... we will finish, but the questions is, how big a disaster it will be...

Myself and Stupot happen to live in Japan...And around these parts there's this random week off from work called "Golden Week" at the start of May...

There is no way I can finish my game tomorrow, but I could potentially finish it if I had the insane extension of a week...

Would any other entrants like an extra week? (Nod-nod...wink-wink...Funkpanzer?!?!.....Erm....Cat?!...Anyone?...Bueller?!)

/me starts chanting:

ONE MORE WEEK!!! ONE MORE WEEK!!! ONE MORE WEEK!!! ONE MORE WEEK!!! ONE MORE WEEK!!! ONE MORE WEEK!!!

Guys...join in if you're feelin' it...

(Or if not then that's fine for me as well: I will just release whatever I have done as a "demo" and then spend the rest of the week fully-forming it into a "real game"...)

No way I can finish in any decent time frame but I'm definitely going to complete the game when I've got some more time. Building a game around having three inventories, four stores, and a game-wide subplot involving this guy (http://www.charlietwitch.com/ags/prepared/beepboop.png) kind of got out of hand...

One day I will grasp the concept of MAGS. :P

There's no way I can complete my current game...

It would suit me actually. The only day I'm not really busy is Tuesday 3rd (Wednesday morning for me). Hopefully that will at give others a chance to put something out or at least give Mandle some time to bring his game to a releaseable condition. Sorry I can't do a whole week. I'm gonna be just as hectic this time next week.

So to confirm, the deadline is 23:59 (BST) on Tuesday 3rd

(P.S. The new contest for May will still be starting tomorrow as usual, so keep an eye out for the new topic!)

Cheers for the extension Stu...

I doubt I can complete the game even with it...

It has just grown way out of the MAGS-possible timeline...

But hopefully the extension provides others with the time they need...

Just to show that I'm not just dicking everyone around, here is a very lame proof-of-concept demo:

HARRY CAINE: LAME DEMO (http://www.mediafire.com/download/14dbz8dbwnl46lr/Harry+Caine+LAME+DEMO.7z)

It's very rough and there is no actual game-play yet...Oh, and please forgive the horrible mouth-synch to the voicing...It needs a lot of work...

Oh, and the terrible mannequin look that Harry has at the moment: That's just the model for him that I made to draw his clothes over, and is not yet complete...

So yeah...If anyone is even interested in sitting through a non-interactuve glimpse of the game then click the link above...The demo will tell you when it's finished and will quit automatically...

(Harry's junk is still fully covered, but actually exists there under two layers of clothing...So no need for age appropriate warnings just yet...)

Cheers cat for the encouragement!

I think after two days straight just working on the damn thing I was feeling totally burnt out and hopeless. So yeah, the support was much needed and much appreciated!

What I'm going to do is take the day off from it today, to allow myself a step back perspective, and tomorrow try to get as much actual gameplay done as possible. The gameplay is nothing that is hard to code or anything, it's just going to require tweaking, which can get mind-numbing...

So I'll be releasing something partly playable, but probably with a lot of graphics/animations missing or placeholders...

Title screen/menu will have to wait until later too.

So a very choppy MAGS version, to be polished into something better, is my goal for now.

How are you guys going with Eruption?

Eruption! development is going really well. I'd say we're 95% done and just this morning I received a reply to the email we sent to Ubisoft. To quote:

QuoteDear Mr van Laatum,
please could you forward us the Skype details of your team members so we can have a conference call on May 3rd, 17:00 GMT with Darren Fitzgerald (head of marketing Europe) and Flummery Bakewell (licenses and third party development)?
We are still very excited about the prospects of including your title 'Eruption!' into our extensive portfolio, and developing it further for Xbox One, PS4 and the new Nintendo platform.

I got a lot of work done today, but I won't have any more time before the deadline to do any more so I'm going to enter what I have so far for the contest:

It is in no way a game, but it does have some interaction now...

Play in fullscreen please for the full experience!

Oh, and: This is the UNRATED DEMO...Which means that Harry Caine WILL be going "Full Monty" if you sit through it long enough...

So: Be warned, and here is a screenie with an eel (mostly) covering his junk for the fainter of heart (although the timing of the shot is a tad deceptive):

This is my MAGS entry, but please remember ahead of time that it is not a playable game yet, but it's the best I could get ready, and will be developed into a full game soonish...

The game will probably crash and/or run out of scrolling background if you sit on it long enough, but not before all the viewable content runs out, so sorry for that issue, but it will be solved given time...

A lot of the graphics are placeholders and a bunch of animations are not complete or missing entirely...

At best I think someone may get a laugh or two out of what it is so far...

I hope noone is offended by the:

SPOILER ALERT:

Hehehe...I kinda expected you guys were pulling a J.J.Abrams on us there, although I was guessing it would be a game about the two of you struggling to get your Eruption game ready for the deadline when some kind of natural disaster hits and you have to try to still meet the deadline despite collapsing ceilings/flooding rooms/lava flows etc....Something meta like that, considering the amount of content you were "leaking"...(Were the "Eruption" graphics made by you guys or did you rip them from somewhere? And was that a page from a 14-year-old cat's actual diary?!)

Spoiler

My voice was quite raw after recording those lines. There are a lot of lines that aren't in the game yet and it took two 2-hour sessions to get them all. I was adlibbing everything and made several versions of each line but, the weird thing was, when I listened to them, 9 out of 10 times the first takes were the ones I went with, sounding the most natural.

If I sound out of breath during the long opening spiel that's because I was still at the tail-end of recovering from a cold and couldn't breathe through my nose yet, but it was so long, there's no script, and I think I got the bumbling tone I wanted, so there was no option of a take-2 on that one...

Oh, that spiel is going to be skipable in the full game, but that is a pretty complex process due to the scrolling backgrounds etc...so there was no time to make it happen yet...

Now I'm left out there dangling in the breeze, pretty much like Harry Caine himself, just exposing his junk without any real context of what the game is supposed to be...

But that is cool as well: If I enter a MAGS...whether I complete the game or not...I will always release what it is at the time of deadline...I have no shame that my boxer shorts got blown off...

Well, to be fairly honest: there was never any substance to Eruption! It was all just a bit of a laugh really ;)
There was so little substance to it that I didn't even make any of those screenshots... let's take a look, ok?

this started out as an anonymous picture that I got from a Google search for "volcano" and "16 bit". I'd like to attribute it to someone but I was never able to find the original creator:

Flipped it, extended it to 640x360, added a cheesy title and a couple of fake buttons. Done!

This "in game" shot:

Started out as a lo-res picture of the map for Rust and some random scientist (sorry, random scientist):

(http://www.miez.nl/tmp/mags4-2016/orig_map.jpg) (http://www.miez.nl/tmp/mags4-2016/orig_scientist.jpg)

Convert to 640x360, add some hoohah and nonsense in Photoshop and you're done.

The final "VR" shot:

Was a Google Earth picture of Mount Fuji, a Google search for "flaming sky", a bit of simulated smoke, some dragon outlines and some screenshots from Hunter - an ancient Amiga game:

So yeah, nothing about Eruption! was ever real. It was fun to do in between all the cupcakes and butter cream though! :-D

Hahahaha!

So one more question:

Whose diary page is this with the 14-year-old girl talking about giving the necklace to her boyfriend in the '90's?

Wow, I'll be honest. You did a damn good job at fooling everyone. :-D

Also, the way you managed to fake all of those screenshots with the minimal of effort is very impressive.
I'd still like to see it turned into a game though. Of course without the whole VR stuff... and probably without the 3D models as well... and the animating lava... ok, so there was nothing to turn into a game. But still, it sounded interesting! :~(

I really don't know! I needed some inspiration for the volcano-catapult minigame GUI and I thought that Toffee might be the kind of person to have a pink diary or notebook at hand.

Aw...I was kinda hoping it was cat's...Of course it was unlikely that cat was keeping a diary in english when she was a child, but I thought maybe she was doing it for practice...

Oh well...I worked way too much on Harry Caine yesterday, late into the night, and now I have to go to work...YAWN!

(Of course, I'm not entering any new work on the game into this MAGS)

Hahaha, no, it is not my diary.

Just tried the Harry Caine demo - the voice acting and flying things are hilarious! Also the scrolling scene and changing weather conditions are impressive. Is there already some interaction in this version? Anyway, I'm looking forward to the full game!

I played through it a few times and I was able to grab a barrel and sometimes other items. I thought that he was going to use the barrel for some much-needed cover  but wasn't able to do anything with it. Funny, because the NEXT time I played I wasn't able to snag any of the flying objects. Not sure what's with that...

In the post-MAGS version (so far) I've changed the grabbing mechanism so it doesn't depend on pixel-perfect clicks. The eels were almost impossible to grab as they are thin and wriggle around so much (realistic I suppose but too frustrating, and the challenge of the game is not supposed to be grabbing stuff)...It's now quite easy to grab whatever you want.

Two-and a bit days leftvfor voting. Any more for any more?
This is as much to remind myself as anyone else :-)

Update:
I just played both entries. Toffee Trouble was superb, and I've posted in the CGA board.
Harry Caine made me laugh a lot. I was so entranced storm gradually getting worse (and by the "eel") that I ran the game right through until the storm literally stopped. Looking forward to the finished version :-D

Yay! ;-D

I thought the theme could be interpreted in many different ways, so I expected to see some more entries. Ah well, too bad. At least Harry Caine and Toffee Bakewell weren't a total disaster ;)

As am I...

I plugged about 5 hours into developing the game today...

The storm no longer just "stops" as Stupot said above...

It now goes on forever (Jesus...seamless scrolling background are a bitch), and also the "Airvitnory" concept I came up with for gameplay is coming along...
