Topic: Jumpin' Jack Flash
This month's guidelines were set by CaptainD, Creamy, Selmiak

The Rolling Stones held a historic free concert in Havana, Cuba, recently, and to commemorate that event the theme for the May MAGS is based around the lyrics of one of their best-loved songs, Jumpin' Jack Flash.

Game must contain:
- The game must feature a character called Jack (doesn't have to be the player character)
- Gas (in whatever form you wish)
- It's all right now (interpret as you wish)

Optional:
- Jack jumps
- Game contains a Toothless, Bearded Hag

Ending: May 31st

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?board=10.0) are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive (http://www.mags-competition.info/?page=games). For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website. (http://www.mags-competition.info/)

I don't think I can do enough drugs in the allotted timeframe that would produce the required mental state AND allow me to code anything. I've read the lyrics and listened to the song a few times now and still don't have the faintest freakin' clue what the hell is going on here. Freakin' hippies, man! :D

Dude that's why we narrowed it down to these very simple things...

- The game must feature a character called Jack (doesn't have to be the player character)
- Gas (in whatever form you wish)
- It's all right now (interpret as you wish)

As for the required mental state... I thought you already had it, man.  I'm disappointed in you.  Though don't make that a reason to go running for Mother's Little Helper...

I suck at drawing platformer sprites, so I looked to the past for inspiration.
[imgzoom]http://s32.postimg.org/h6hmrh875/Image2.png[/imgzoom] (zoomable image)
On the left is an old sprite from my Flappy Dennis game, the right is the new heavily edited sprite built upon the left one. Is the new sprite MAGs legal? I know it looks a lot different, I just didn't want to get accused of anything If someone noticed similarities further down the line.

Jackie Rackham, Space Pirate Captain deposed by her crew due to her Irritable Bowel Syndrome!

Post by: Slasher on Sat 07/05/2016 19:34:48
i think that if an old sprite is included but made-over so it looks kind of different then that is a skill in itself and i reckon it would be ok... but it is not down to me... see if anything is said by the top brass (laugh)

My hopeful May entry is practically ready....

Long live Jumpin' Jack and can he get any satisfaction? (laugh)

Updated: May 26th................

Jumpin' Jack: the bean powered kid

Short game with 3 scenarios to deal with... humorous and at times sad... very stonesy' and contains some bodily function humour (as per topic insinuated).

This is my first game ever using 320 x 200.

Jumpin' Jack the bean powered kid is a kind of fairytale meets superhero.

After the boat that Jack (real name Woody) and his parents were on hits underwater rocks their boat sinks and Jack gets washed up on the shores of a cornish village. Jacks' parents are never found and pronounced dead.

Gramelda, the village witch, takes Jack into the Blackstock family and raises him as their own teaching him the black magic spells of the Blackstocks' legacy.

Jack is not cut out for all this evil black magic as he dreams of becoming a superhero like superman and batman.

Jacks' stepmother makes Jack a costume not realising Jacks' good intentions and when she realises that her Jack is going around doing good deeds it angers her to a point where she tells him to leave home until he cames to his senses and became a full blooded Blackstock black magic wizard.

With this, Jack leaves home with only his hero costume and a few encharted beans and continues his quest to become a superhero helping anyone who needs help and dismissing violence.

Then he comes across Buddy Love the school bully who thinks himself as a Ronnie Kray!

Without using any violence how can Jack do good over evil and will his stepmother Gramelda ever take Jack back into the Blackstock family?

@slasher Good God!  Think we put in enough fart jokes?!  (Don't answer that!)

As for me, eh, even if I DID find time to do the MAGS here, I'm not sure how I can do the "Jumpin' Jack Flash" theme well... mainly since I know so little about Rolling Stones, and I want to keep it classy if possible (unless of course I really WAS in the mood for gas jokes).

But, again, good luck to everyone participating.

@DBoyWheeler: Read the opening post again. There are only 3 very loose MAGS rules this month, you don't even have to know the stones...

and there I had hoped someone would use an oil rig as a setting where they burn the gas or so...

Got a good feeling about this project, I've got Jackie jumping around and shooting a laser gun (she is a space pirate). For some reason I drew her holding a watering can, so now there's gardening in the game. Next I'm working on the fart meter, the idea being if you let the gas build up too much the resulting explosion kills your plants. I may weaponize the farts somehow.

"It's all right now" not sure how I'm going to do with that, maybe I'll make a "reassurance system" where you hug your depressed friend.

I wrote a story and puzzles on paper today, but doubt I have the time to make the graphics in the short time that there is left... not to mention it would delay my first Beta for the BSG game... But it is tempting.

And Kumpel, you stole my idea! Though... mine isn't dark.

I managed to scrape some time together to make a game for Adventure Jam 2016 that also fits the MAGS May rules (just about :P).

The game is called Memoriae.

Okay, done. :)
Will compile, zip and upload... stay tuned. :-D

EDIT: Sorry for the slight delay, but I found a couple bugs more and tried to fixed them. One is still present: Viewing Credits from the Menu will make the game quit after viewing. Sorry, I even created a bool just for that, but for some odd reason still quit... no more time, so... :-\

Jack has just ran out of gas on his way home. The gas station is only a few blocks away, so he decides to walk there and get some gas so he can get home.

I've tried 4 games so far:

Out Of Gas: Well, actually I've been trying this game for the last week or so, as one of the testers and the proofreader...It's great! I love the calming feeling of just being able to stroll around the city while considering your predicament...Puzzles are fun and rewarding to solve!

Rackham: A nice, short little farming sim so far (it's "kind of a demo")...There are some issues with sprites jumping up one pixel, which is a little jarring, and the keyboard commands take a bit of getting used to, but it is easy to tell that the game was designed for much grander things and that it is still a fetus at this time.

Jump!Jack!Flash!: WOW! Who knew that Kumpel was actually Ghost?! Why didn't anyone tell me I was ignorant?! What was the big secret?! Seriously though: why is the game credited to Ghost under the game icon? Is it because of some module used? Or is Kumpel actually Ghost's new identity?! The game itself is very nice: A lot of effort has gone into setting the mood and maintaining it, but I encountered a glitch that gave away the solution to a puzzle series I had not yet completed, which kind of broke my immersion and interest in finishing the game at that point...

SPOILER ALERT:
Spoiler
I could get robbed by Louise before I had solved the "makeshift wrench" puzzle, and then that sequence gave away all the details on how to make the wrench, and actually gave me the finished product...And then, even though my car's hood was already magically open, I could still use the "wrench" on the car to "reopen" it...I still had the

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT:
Spoiler
Pen and the bottle opener in my inventory, but not the duct tape that I now knew I was supposed to have gotten from the dumpster...
[close]
[close]
I will replay this game later...

Jumpin' Jack: the bean powered kid: Classic Slasher stuff: Hilariously unpolished, and yet flawless, glitchless gameplay. And a rather touching tale told in three acts... I loved the way:

SPOILERS:
Spoiler
The path to Jack's family redemption was forced on him rather than him just becoming a nasty bastard of his own free will...And the bullies' comeuppance was the funniest moment in a Slasher game since the besting of the Sumo wrestler in that James Bond parody one (who can even keep up with all the titles' names???) ...I was praying the game would go all the way with the colour changes to the character sprites...And it "delivered the mail" right on time!!!
The mere fact that I actually felt quite moved by the resolution of the story arc is proof, for me at least, of Slasher's minimalistic storytelling genius... Never underestimate THE SLASHER!!!
[close]
And now that Slasher has been unleashed on MAGS: May God help us all!!! Next time, mate, release a game every 5 days, following the theme, for the whole month! That'll keep everyone on their tippy-toes!

Okay, that's four down and so:

NEXT UP:

Memoriae: Xil's games have always fascinated me in his way of pushing the boundaries of what exactly a gameplay experience is or could potentially be. I've saved this one for last on purpose: HERE I GOOOOooooooooooooooo down the rabbit hooooole...

(Some time later) ...............actual "time-gap-playing-the-game" EDIT:

aaaaaannndddd here I come baCK OOOOOOUT

OH MY GOD!!! Anything I would say about this experience needs a huge:

SPOILER ALERT!!!
Spoiler
The game was short but the mere idea of an assassin actually being in the trade of:

HUGE SPOILER ALERT!!!
Spoiler
Ridding a particular person from your life, not through killing them but...

MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT!!!
Spoiler
Erasing them from your memory forever....DUDE!!! That is the coldest way you could ever "kill" somebody...The rest of the world goes on as normal, there are no news headlines, there is no inheritance motivation....You just wanted that person to not exist SO badly that you hired someone to remove them completely from your own, and only your own, version of reality...You don't even care if they continue on breathing...As long as you never even knew they were ever alive...FUCK! I have chills right now at where the story could possibly go if you carry on with this production...Literally...chills...
[close]
[close]
[close]

Now I'm done with all five... It will take some time to process the polar-opposite content of this MAGS collection!!!

But I must say, this is one of the most diverse-in-tone and FUN MAGS in recent memory...

Most MAGS have an obvious winner...but...

I'm so excited to replay every game over again, and then think about them over again in my spare time (riding my bicycle to work and back) before reaching a final descision...

This is gonna be a toughie!!!

@Mandle Thanks for playing dude :) I'd like to think I got somewhere with the idea just a shame I didn't have time for the game haha :D I shall indeed at some point be returning to this to finish it off as I actually have the whole story planned and it was nice doing it with my other half who did pretty much all the writing.

As for me now, I'm off to download and play all the games! I shall be back soon with my thoughts :)
Title: Re: MAGS May "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (VOTING)
Post by: Kumpel on Sun 05/06/2016 03:47:32
Played them all through now. Here are my thoughts:

xil:
In the beginning very atmospheric and even immersive (that intro is great!), but it soon lacks interactivity. The story text parts are well written and the over all monochromatic design is very neat. That minimalistic style has it's charm (The way you designed clouds and stuff are really cool-weird), but still I kinda miss something else to do, apart from reading large passages where sometimes it has been very hard to sort out, what they have to do with the story itself. Everything is very mysterious here. Of course I do like to think in an adventure, but I like to get some structure of thinking in a game even more.
Spoiler
I actually couldn't figure it out... Is it some kinda game, where the player character wants to recap some memories (of him/this girl/both/whom?)... Is it a mind intruding scenario? Jack was introduced as a contract killer. Is this the future, where information can be shared via memory storage? Very confusing... The hacking part was a good idea, but it soon proceeded on it's own and became another click-through-storytelling-part. No challenge whatsoever.
[close]
Nevertheless it has been nice 10 minutes.
Spoiler
And your cliffhanger is pretty mean...
[close]

addendum:
Spoiler
Thanks to Mandle I know get it. Now that is actually a really cool idea. But still your game lacks the execution of said unthinkable cold-heartedness. at least a little memory kill performance as a nice teaser could have made it so much better (and clearer) for me!
[close]

Cassiebsg:
What a cuuuute game. these characters are weirdly rough designed and super pleasant at the same time. Your city design is delightful and this choice of music really adds to the overall feel good playing atmosphere. At one moment I wasn't sure, if I missed something...
Spoiler
Which character tells you that the thief has a scarred face? Or do we have to guess/remember this detail? Well in my case I had a hard time finding a new infomation about him and suddenly I chose the right one and could finish the game.
[close]
I loved almost everything about this one.
Spoiler
And I so would have wanted to get to know better that sweet lady with the orange dress ;)
[close]
You, sir, are my favorite!

slasher:
Well this one really tried to ride on a huge wave of crude humor. I am not that much into body functions jokes, but I liked the more or less dramatic backstory and also got some of the rolling stones references, although I know nearly nothing about this band. Your graphics ranged from lovely but simple, to lazy but workable. Your bean power game mechanics has been great though. Never thought it could be that much fun
Spoiler
and I was glad, he didn't use magic bean gas for his super power... (nod)(roll)
[close]
All in all an entertaining MAGS game with some dieduction at the visual design grade.

Retro Wolf:
In the beginning a pretty hard, but after some time a very funny, little farming game. That movement and interaction keys were a bit tricky to coordinate and to control.
Spoiler
Very often I put seeds into an already occupied spot. If it's a different kind of seed I would get it, but when the game is taking money as I try putting the same kind of seeds in there, bacause I missed goig a pixel more to the next spot, it makes me a little bit angry. :-X
[close]
I never got beyond a hundred credits After a second round I mastered it :). But still I didn't get the benefit of that huge jump feature. Is it just to evade the robot waves or is that part of the cut out game features/challenges due to lack of development time?

@Stupot:

The link to  Jump! Jack! Flash! in the first post of this thread is actually a dead link. I initially thought that the game was pulled from the competition as a result. Thankfully I read till Kumpel's most recent post and found the updated link and enjoyed this game. Can you please update the link to the active one?

@Kumpel:
I played Jump! Jack! Flash! last night and I LOVED IT! Great adaptation of the MAGS theme. I really liked the graphics and characters in the game. Good little story. The parts I liked most were:

- The game is PACKED with puzzles. It was one after the other and they are all really fun and well designed. Very impressive for a short game like this.
- I particularly liked the "Canadian stuck in the US" theme. Being Canadian and having been to the US many times, I was really able to relate to the encounter of the predictable apathetic American with a serious superiority complex. I don't think I've seen this theme in games before.

Well done

The best ting to do is to make a database entry. That wayvI can just provide the link to the Game page and authors can change the links themselves if needs be.

Kumpel, if you put the game in your Dropbox's Public folder, then get its public link via the website (select file -> copy public link), you can update the zip as often as you want and the URL will remain the same.

This might sound dumb but when I started making Rackham I'd just read an article about accessibility in gaming. So I tried designing it so it could be played one handed, with the intention of adding customizable controls later on. Then I realised I needed another button so that kind of went out the window (laugh).

I think I was being a bit overambitious with the personal time that I had this month.

Every problem that you guys mentioned was on the to do list but I wouldn't have made the deadline. No time for polish. It is certainly a shadow of the project that was in my mind.

EDIT:

Kumpel:
I enjoyed the pixel art and funny dialogue, but the gameplay can be a bit inconsistent, stuff like:
Spoiler
I couldn't use candy on hag, but could talk to her about it. This led me to believe that inventory items shouldn't be used on hotspots, but I needed to use wallet and gas pump.
[close]
There's missing interactions on certain hotspots. When sometimes I would get a "No" for using the wrong inventory item, other times nothing would happen.

I did enjoy the puzzles.

I feel like a bit of a tit head saying this (because of my own game) but it needs polish! (laugh)

You also have a copy of the game's rar within the game's rar! Are you trying to create a black hole?! (laugh)

Xil:

I found the art style pretty cool, you're a good writer but the text seemed hard to read at times (though I am using a small notebook laptop).
The game seemed to play itself for the most part (always telling you what to do next), I would have liked a little challenge. I'll be sure to check out the next part when you release it!

Cassie:

For some reason I always feel a bit doubtful when I see pre rendered 3D, but when I play the game it works out really well. I thought your game was really cute! Somehow the characters seemed simultaneously creepy and cute looking, they kind of reminded me of stop motion puppets.
I really liked the design of the town!

I did not finish yet though:
Spoiler
I know he's ugly but don't know if that means he has a scar? He's blonde and blue eyed, wears chequered shirt. I have the gas in the bottle.

Slasher:

I'm always jealous of Slasher's output, classic Slasher art and humour. I can only wonder what it would have been like if you'd spent the whole month on it!

I've played them all, but I've only just got around to writing up my thoughts about each game, so here we go:

Jumpin' Jack: the bean powered kid by Slasher

I enjoyed this game, it was well put together and the puzzles all made sense. The story turned out to be quite sweet in the end, and there were some good references to the Stones. I would only say that perhaps there could have been slightly more explanation about the bean power iself, but for a game that was created as quickly as this one was, it is pretty amazing!

Memoriae by Xil

Wow, this is one stylish looking game! I love the stark graphics and the descriptions, making it almost a hybrid between a point and click and a text adventure. The story is really intriguing and my only complaint is that it ends far too soon! I'd be very interested in playing a full version of this game.

Out of Gas by Cassiebsg

This is a very cute game. I liked the main puzzle, but I did have very slight trouble finding all of the correct information (I guessed one of them and happened to be right). I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it felt like a proper bustling little town. A lovely little game which I very much enjoyed. :)

Rackham by Retro Wolf

Now, this is an original idea for the theme! I would never have thought of something like this. The gameplay does get a bit repetative after a while, but it is fun to play. It did take me a short while to realise that I had to actually plant the seeds and not just water the bare patches of earth, but that's probably just my own stupidity. :P I liked the graphics too, simple but in a very charming way. A nice little time-filler.

Jump! Jack! Flash! by Kumpel

I loved the opening to this game, it really sets up the theme nicely. The graphics are very nice, and the animations are all well done. The puzzles are logical, but I found that clicking some things (or using inventory items with certain things) would give no response, which made the game feel a bit unpolished (although I see that you've been working on it since). A really good effort, though, and a fun story!
Title: Re: MAGS May "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (VOTING)
Post by: xil on Wed 08/06/2016 18:20:38
Hey everyone, thanks for the comments :)

I'd probably describe Memoriae as an interactive story, heavily inspired by games like Kentucky Route Zero. I think it will always be a bit like Marmite as to whether you enjoy that kind of thing but I'm glad people liked the graphics. I never intended to cliff-hanger it as well and do have a full story created, I just lacked the time unfortunately.

Bit of extra info about my game re the feedback:
Spoiler
Kumple: The whole experience would have become much more clear if I had had the time to complete it but I was never quite going for a cold-hearted killer vibe. Mandel got it pretty spot on - it's very much riffing off the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In that film (which is set in the near future) the act of removing memories is now just another legal everyday operation (think laser-eye surgery) that people can just go have with little to no bad side effects or risks.

The relative ease and the way removing a memory is almost a nonchalant act in the game's future should paint a stark contrast to how things are in present day for the player. I created a sort of memory removal company (kinda like a private detective) for my protagonist Jack and, in a cruel attempt to fool the player, I refer to him as a contract killer. However, I almost immediately let the player know that all is not as it seems with my initial dialogue choices as no one in their right mind would answer the phone 'Memoriae Contract Killings, how can I help?' if they truly were in the business of murdering people! :D

Onto the other games though! I've just about got through all the games so will give my thoughts.

Slasher

You already know this but you are an absolute machine when it comes to making games. Whilst obviously not the most polished you excel in something that I myself am pretty terrible at: finishing what you started! I really enjoyed the story and how in such a small game you managed to get a nice arc :). I did get stuck quite a bit but I got there in the end!

Kumpel

The intro was absolutely fantastic! It's also really hard to pull off a night-time scene but you did that really well. It was a shame you didn't quite get all the interactions scripted in, but it didn't really spoil anything for me to be honest. I did fail miserably a few times at the maths bit though haha.

Cassie

Awesome game and my favourite of the lot! Your graphics are constantly improving and as others have stated I really like the charm of the characters. It would have been nice to have larger areas to click on the NPCs but it didn't get in the way of the nice story and puzzles.

Retro Wolf

It took me ages as well to realise that I had to plant the seeds before watering the ground haha but I soon had a tomato forest going on! :D You've done quite a few games I've seen on Game Jolt in this style and it really works. I also really appreciate this style achieved within AGS.

(laugh) Thanks for playing everybody!

Fun facts:
-I originally set out to make a pure action game, until I drew a watering can!
-The AGS room is only 320 pixels wide, the player never actually moves!
-The plants are an array of enumerated types, I loop trough them to change their state and draw to the background surface.
-No AGS objects in the game room and only Jackie is an AGS character.
-For the robots I made a struct which is also an array, so I could scale up the amount of robots as desired. I just loop through the array to process and draw robots.

Ideas I had (no time):
-Your own robots so you could automate your farming.
-Milkable cows. (With fence posts to stop them wandering).
-Placeable turrets.
-The robots are supposed to attack plants not the player.
-Fully powered farts would explode your plants, and would go off on its own if you waited too long. Explosions would kill robots.
-A depressed friend you had to reassure "It's all right now...".
-The guy flying over was supposed to be an ex boyfriend. He's the one sending the robots (I never got round to timing his fly overs with robot spawning).

@Retro Wolf... oops, just saw that you're stuck?
Spoiler

Ah... but that's just a guy that looks like the real burglar! (laugh) Pitty v1.0 is a bit buggy, I'm not sure if the burglar is actually circulating in that version. :-[ I've fix it in v1.1 plus a ton os other minor bugs, just waiting for Mandle to have some time and get me a revised proofreading before publishing v1.1. Anyway... Here's some hints if you still stuck:
Spoiler

Pay attention to the old lady and the gas guy, they actually give you hints, even if they are "generalizing"... embrace the hints if you can't find the burglar to take a good look at again.
Spoiler

And you don't have to get all right, 4 out 7 right is good enough. ;) (laugh)

I've still not finished Kumpel's... and there's no save function! Which means I'll have now to restart it for the 5th time tomorrow! :~( >:(

@Cassie: WHAT??? What is the problem with mine? is it a bug or are you stuck? Just ask me! 8-0

Sorry. Never implemented a save function before. I will do that for the polished version though. (Also I will customize the inventory bar)

But it's really not that long. I hope you can master it before the voting time is over :-[ ;)

@kumpel. I nearly had the same trouble as Cassie, but decided to leave the game running minimalised while I did some other bits, and after a while I tried again and finished the game. Nice stuff. Enjoyed the puzzles and whole scenario. Looking forward to the polished version.

I guess that's my little review of Kumpel's game, so consider this space reserves for my thoughts about the others (which I've yet to play, sorry)

Kumpel, problem is that I only play at night when I have time, and I turn off the computer when I go to bed... I know silly idea, but I do. (roll) Which means that sometimes I only get to play 5 minutes, before I'm too tired to continue. If I get stuck and can't save, just means I need to start over.
Spoiler

Besides, you locked the cursor on the gas GUI, which means I wasn't able to exit. 2 of the "quits" was just me trying to exit it. And one time I was looking for a menu or a save, so I pressed all keys starting Esc and then hit F9 and it restarted! 8-0

PS - Implementing a 1 save slot, like I did, took me less than 5 minutes! ;)

Thank you to all entrants for making this a really great MAGS! I have voted, and it was tough. There were three that were pretty inseparable for me. Anyway, here are my reviews:

Out of Gas by Cassiebsg

I loved this game. To me, it felt like playing a Nintendo game or the Sims or something. Just had the right atmosphere to it. There were so many little goings-on in the city that it seemed full of life. It was a bit hard to gather all of the clues for the thief, and some positive reinforcements upon correct guesses would've been appreciated. I also think he's the most well-mannered thief I've ever met. He always took the time of day to at least say a few words while he was on the run. I also like that there was a character in the city who looked almost EXACTLY like the thief. Finally, the car models were very cute, with tiny little wheels. Lovely.

Jump! Jack! Flash! by Kumpel

This game's introduction set the mood really well. It felt MOVIE LIKE (great success). There was some great characterisation in the game too. "Metres, huh?" -- I really liked that line and it said so much about the guy's attitude by saying so little. The litre/gallon maths puzzle was easily the best puzzle of this MAGS (and I'm not just saying that because I got it first time). I thought the plot twist was fantastic, and left me wondering why a criminal would lie around licking car batteries all day. Lastly, I wanted to see inside the service station and I wanted to know what happened to Louise (thought there might be some resolution to that). Stuff like that is the mark of good storytelling. It got me intrigued and invested in the game world. Good job.

Oh, I have to mention this. The main character talks about how he had "wild intercourse" in his car. That actually made me chuckle a bit because it just sounds so artificial. Most people would just say "sex". Please don't change it though.

Jumpin' Jack: the bean powered kid by Slasher

Slasher's games are always really well told. Slasher, you've played to your strengths here by keeping the story simple and framing it expertly. I found it very easy to understand. You established things really well. There was no nonsense and very little setup required. Just clear heroes, villains, machinations and action! The game would've benefited from additional proofreading, but the story shone through.

The characters were hilariously drawn. I loved their faces! Bean-powered "kid" might be a bit of stretch. I thought they might be secondary school students or something, but honestly, Jack's frame was about the size of a grown man. Still, made it very funny. Reminded me of those Tim and Eric sketches where they dress up like little boys Also, admittedly, it was toilet humour, but the sense of urgency around Larry's constant flatulence was just a tiny bit amusing.

I noticed a Rolling Stones reference too. That was nice.

Rackham by Retro Wolf

I would've liked to be able to use the IBS to jump aboard the ship. I actually had no idea what purpose the ship served. I never got to finish this, but it just seemed to be wave after wave of robot aliens with no end in sight. Was planting stuff supposed to help me? It seemed like I only got cash from shooting things, not growing things. Pretty cool how you could plant a tap! :D

I liked this as a change of pace from the other adventure titles. Pretty good.

Memoriae by xil

Some of the artwork in this was really well drawn. The intro had me drawn in, but the walls of text were off-putting. It's not that I don't like reading (I do), but the weird choice of font, combined with the lack of integration left me wanting to skip most of the dialogue. The game would've benefited from more showing, not telling. Even something as simple as speech-bubble conversations with the characters would've helped. I didn't like the way it read like a script.

I liked his job as a hired memory eraser. It did well to stick to the theme too, with Jack and references to gas. I thought the ending was pretty abrupt. I think you did well to incorporate so many well-drawn screens in such a short time period. Good stuff.

Jump! Jack! Flash! by Kumpel
Loved almost everything about this game!
Cinematic intro! Great sprites, good story! Fully packed with crazy puzzles! :-D
The points that track a bit down:
Spoiler

As mentioned before: No Save, locking the mouse for the gas pump GUI (maybe I could have canceled in the red button? I panicked and never tried it! (roll)). And some bugs, that made the game in a funny way not intended of suited. Like the character becomes tiny when walking behind the car, he losses tint when talking to Louise. Fix these are it's a great game! My favorite of the lot!

Jumpin' Jack: the bean powered kid by Slasher
Great little game to get one into the action! Simple yet effective puzzles, and loved the story. (nod)
I'm not much into fart jokes, and being stuck on the first screen for a while was starting to annoy me. (laugh) Remaining of the game went smooth! :-D
And yes, your plan worked! If you hadn't done yours in 7 days, I would not have even tried to make mine! (roll)
So thanks for the inspiration and challenge! (nod)

Memoriae by xil

Love the graphics! Can't say it enough times! And lovely interface!
That said, I didn't actually felt like the game started, and then it was over. :-X
As for the rest, I agree with Gurok, too much text that's hard to read for my like.

Rackham by Retro Wolf

Ahmmm... I guess this type of games are just not me.
It has great potential to be rather addictive game, but I found the controls hard to work out. And for some odd reason you decided the normal sprite that shoots laser would not have anything on her, which made me loop through countless times. Need a lot of polish, if I'm going t play it again.
Lovely graphics though! (nod)
In other words: I suck at this type of games!

Congrats Cassie!!!

You so deserved it! It simply was (almost) flawlessly programmed, very well designed and fun to play - all wrapped in 100% eye candy. Therefore, without a doubt, the best product of this month ;)

These bugs broke my neck, I guess. Thanks for the four people who voted in my favour though! 8-0
I am really glad, you liked my first ever released quick shot adventure game that much, to give me your vote. (nod)

Be sure...

*humming the Terminator tune*

I WILL BE BACK!
Jump! Jack! Flash! 2.0 is coming soon with a slightly extended (which means properly concluded) story, a save function (thank god!), a custom inventory bar and a nice little main menu...

Congrats Cassie :)
I'm a little late but here are my reviews :

Rackham
Kudos for the original gameplay. It's quite simple once you get used to the controls but it's entertaining for a while.
I haven't figured out what the gas jump is for.

Out of Gas
Nice style. it felt like playing with toys in a miniature town.
Spoiler
I had to restart the game to pay more attention to the robber. Even so, it wasn't easy to answer some of the questions (how old can this puppet be? Is it a scar under his eye?).
[close]
The old lady was funny.

Jump! Jack! Flash!
My pick of the bunch.
The intro sets the mood nicely and the puzzles are good, with some well-defined characters. I've learnt a lot about Canada from AGS games (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1936/).

The bean powered kid
Slasher made a good job of creating an entertaining game faithful to the song (raised by a toothless bearded hag...).
The fart noise at the begining was driving me nuts but fortunately I didn't have too much trouble completing the game.

Memoriae
Quoteit was intriguing. It has a good Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind vibe about it. I can't wait to see more.

@Creamy thanks for the nice words. (nod)

The old lady gives you a clue on that. ;) But then, he's not a child, nor middle aged/old... which really only leave you with one choice. (laugh) And yes, that is a scar. Clue you can also get from the guy at the gas station.
