Title: Sniper and spotter serving the motherland
Post by: Blondbraid on Fri 28/10/2016 20:34:41
I'm working on a new game, titled Sniper and Spotter serving the motherland!
This game is a sequel to my previous game,Sniper and Spotter being Patriotic (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2050/), but it is a standalone story and my intention is that players shall be able to understand the story even if they haven't played the previous game.

The plot is rather straightforward.
The great patriotic war is raging and Olga, a sniper loyal to the motherland, and Ivan, her trusted spotter, have received an order to use the scorched earth tactic on a small soviet village before it falls into the hands of the axis. Their mission will be to destroy all resources and burn the village before the enemy gets a chance to destroy all resources and burn the village...
Gameplay-wise, this game will focus on exploring the village and sabotaging and destroying various parts of it while the battle between the Axis forces and the Red Army draws closer.

I haven't come very far yet, but I'm working on the graphics, as well as animations for the characters.
So far, a new animation of the commissar being woken up by something:

Ivan and Olga are back? Aw yeah, not that's some great news right here. :D Definitely putting this one on my "can't wait to try it" list. :)

QuoteTheir mission will be to destroy all resources and burn the village before the enemy gets a chance to destroy all resources and burn the village...

That's actually a very realistic goal, considering the WWII times and the USSR general methods and tactics. ;) For the Motherland!

I was trying to evoke the look of old low-budget eastern-European cartoons, but don't worry, it will look different in-game!

Great to see you excited for my game!
I did take a lot of inspiration from real warfare, but a lot of fictional heroes also tend to leave a trail of destruction in their wake. Olga and Ivan simply have to destroy all the things in their surroundings deliberately rather than incidentally.

Anyway, here is a new screenshot:

Thank you both!

I haven't really given this project the time I wanted to this month, since I've been busy working on a MAGS game, Fallen soldier,
link: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=54211.0
(some of the characters do show up in Sniper and spotter though! ;) )

Since that game is finished, I have taken up work on this game again, and made some new animations.
Here is a new animation I made of the commissar where I really wanted to show just really how much he cares for the well-being of his men:

Hello and merry Christmas!
While I've been occupied the last few days, I'm now about to begin working on the game again. I estimate that about a third of the backgrounds for the game are completed,
but much work still remain on the graphics as well as the puzzles. I will add more screenshots in the next update.
I'd add a Christmas card or something, but the protagonists and subject matter of my game doesn't lend itself well to such themes...

I have a proposition for you 8-) .. why don't you create short in-game sketches and upload them for us to watch? They don't need to be in the actual game. I'm saying that because I am getting teased by seeing the backgrounds and trying to imagine the situations and voices :~( (laugh)

I've seen many AGS projects based on cartoons and stuff, but your "Sniper and Spotter" characters are so alive and I never get tired of watching. I LOVE THEIR DIALOGS ;-D

This character is probably the one I've spent the most time animating, and it's no small task for such a jittery character,
but the hardest part was probably getting this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-VRyQprlu8) out of my head afterwards. :)

A pregnant thief? Hey, that's neat - but now your game definitely needs a morality system! :D

> Give her a small sack of potatoes (paragon +10)
> Just let her go (paragon +1)
> Arrest her (renegade +1)
> Shoot her on the spot (renegade +10)

Glad to have piqued your interest!  ;-D
While the outcome of the encounter will be pretty limited (it has to be something both the protagonists can agree on after all), the player will have some choice on how threatening they want to be.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I have been a bit busy lately, part of that time has gone into working on a hidden-object type of mini-game for this game, which frankly, is kind of garbage. Sadly I could not see that it was a bug-ridden failure on a design, game play and artistic level until I've already built it. You know it's bad when even the one designing the game thinks a puzzle feels weird and out of place, so I decided to cut it.

But I do have some progress to show, and two new screenshots. Here you can see a little shed:
And here you can see the same little shed after Olga and Ivan has visited:

Well, sometimes it's best to cut something if it's not working. Don't beat your self, knowing when to throw something in the trash bin, even after you spent so long to make it work, it's a good thing, not a bad one. ;)

Thanks for the kind words everyone, and while I won't add any mini-games I do hope the puzzles will be enough gameplay for the game,
like I wrote in an earlier update, rather than have separate areas with different puzzles, this game will all take place in one village
where all tasks ties into one big task, hopefully without feeling underwhelming in comparison. I suppose I'm going for a structure similar to this fairytale (http://www.authorama.com/english-fairy-tales-6.html).

Seeing as it's Valentine's day, I thought it would be a good time to announce that in Sniper and spotter serving the motherland,
romantic sub-plots, flirtatious dialogue options and romantic side-quests...

...will not show up in the game.
Something I have spent time on implementing into the game however, is the ability for the player to seek clues from the commissar regarding the use of different inventory items,
my vision being that if the player needs a clue on how to use a certain item in the inventory, they can give it to the commissar and each item will lead to an unique answer.
At one point Ivan will even be able to ask the commissar to give him an item he needs to complete a puzzle, as seen in this screenshot below:

I recently spent some time writing scripts and drawing new sprites,

Believe it or not, but the goat was animated with only 7 frames of animation:

I've also taken the time to animate a most exciting scene where Olga and Ivan makes a bridge explode...

Yes, it took me around two hours to draw and animate the commissar and his toppling card castle.

I do feel that I'm making progress however, most puzzle pieces are in place, the only things I haven't begun
working on yet are the ending scene and one other character of which I've been unable to decide between two
different concepts for said character. But otherwise, things are beginning to take shape!

I've spent the weekend adding a new character and implementing him in puzzles and dialogues.
I wanted Olga and Ivan to interact with a member of the resistance, so this person wouldn't be a real soldier
but instead an unlikely person whom happened to take up arms against the Nazis.
I had a hard time deciding on who this character should be, but this is what I came up with;
A young boy who's parents were killed by the Nazis because they thought his parents might make people join the resistance.
Seeing his parents killed by Nazis made the boy join the resistance.

I haven't decided a name for him yet, but if it's any consolation, he now lives with his aunt,
and he does manage to spend time in school in between fighting the Nazis.

As for the jeep, it's backstory is that it was built by an up and coming young american lass with a boyfriend serving in the navy,
and later on it was shipped along with other military vehicles and supplies to Russia as part of USA's alliance with the soviet union,
and issued to a red army infantry captain but after a few drunken shenanigans it somehow ended up in the hands of Olga and Ivan's Commissar.
I haven't come up with a good way of actually including this backstory in the game itself though...  (roll)

I have also started a devlog on Game Jolt (http://gamejolt.com/games/sniper-and-spotter-serving-the-motherland/239699) in the hope of reaching a wider audience.

I'll admit I just made that one up on a whim, but I have tried to make the most of the things you
can see in the background of the screenshots have some reason of being there, either to set the mood or
factor into a puzzle.

But the backstory for the jeep wasn't that big of a leap in imagination since I did use a photo of an american
army jeep for a reference, it's much easier to find good pictures of american items and vehicles than soviet ones.
Here's the image I used as reference:

The game is now playable from start to finish and all core elements are there!

However, it's not quite ready to be released yet as it still needs a few more animations and music.
And polishing. Lots of polishing.

If you want the Russian WW2 version of a jeep you should go with GAZ-67 (Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod)

The similarity to the American Willys MB is not a coincident :)

If you want the Russian WW2 version of a jeep you should go with GAZ-67 (Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod)
The similarity to the American Willys MB is not a coincident :)
Nice, I'll have to remember that jeep model!

I have made a few new animations since my last update, including two new animations for the commissar. It was a bit of work to animate his arms due to the stars on his sleeves. Why did the soviets have to sew them onto their sleeves? :(
Here is one of the new animations:

Since the game isn't as linear as the first one, you can visit all rooms from the start and go back and forth between them, rather than just relying on regular checkpoints
Ivan and Olga can ask the commissar to make a note of their progress as a diegetic way of saving the game.

That will certainly be an interesting way to save the game. :)

Yup, that's a pretty clever save point. :) Oh, and I love how the commissar is so used to his job, he doesn't even look at the notes while writing them down. :D

I have made some new animations since my last update in this thread, but due to being spoiler-y
there won't be any screenshots. I've also added a few more interactions, so that Olga will say something
different and relevant in each room of the game, as well as say different things about the various inventory items
(there is twelve of them used in the game so far).

I've added a new screenshot as well as a new devlog at Game Jolt (http://gamejolt.com/games/sniper-and-spotter-serving-the-motherland/239699).

This game is finally done enough for me to set a release date!
I'm aiming to have everything completed and ready for download by the end of this month.
Pretty much all music and sound effects are there, the only big things remaining are making a few more animations
as well as some optional interactions in the environment to flesh out the game world and the characters in it.

Also, here is a new screenshot:

I've made a trailer for the game!
Well, more of a teaser really, butt I took time trying to make some good animations and showing off the premise of the game.
This is the first trailer I've ever made, so I'm excited to hear your opinions!

Watch it here! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY_O6pJ1wBE)

I felt the love you as the creator have for your characters, and also felt a strong wish to check back in with them and see how they are doing... Also a strong urge to replay the original game!
