Title: Redesigning Reality-On-The-Norm for pixeling practice
Post by: Hobo on Thu 19/01/2017 15:59:13
Redesigning what? The RoN assets? What's going on?
No, I'm not remaking all the RoN assets. This is me practicing pixeling and character design. Started doodling them when I was playing through RoN games a while ago and now I'm in the habit of occasionally doing some more. It's possible that in about 5 years there will be enough resources to make a complete game out of them, but I wouldn't really count on it.

Max Griff's office (used for RoN 15th anniversary MAGS competiton (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=53185.0) announcement):

And an older version of Elandra:

Everything I post here is completely free to use for any RoN related project, no credit required. If you want to use them for other purposes then please be so kind and contact me first. I'll probably post something new here every 1-2 months or so, if anyone else has something similar to share, you're welcome to join in.

Wow, these are incredible.
Imagine using them for a RoN reboot. :-D

Awesome!

The pixel work is, indeed, awesome. But... I'm trying to finish a RoN game using Jackie as the main character. Your take on Jackie would never have gotten her to the same place in my game. I think, might be wrong, that Renegade Implementor is responsible for getting the RoN characters fairly standardized, so the look and feel appear similar. Before you undertake something like this, you might want check with him about the scope of the job. I'm not saying don't continue, your stuff looks great and would also likely work great in an alternate RoNiverse, but it seems a major undertaking.

Either you didn't read my post very carefully or I wasn't clear enough about it :) I'm not remaking RoN assets, I'm only trying to hone my pixeling skills. I guess you may call it fan art.
Anyway, I don't actually think that RoN needs a visual reboot. Current graphics are good enough to make great games with and as you said, there's a lot of them. For me, one of the main points of RoN has always been its simplicity, basically anyone can join in and add or modify the resources. My style, on the other hand, might be a bit too complex for complete beginners.

The thing about RON is you don't HAVE to use the standard sprites, I could make a RON game with my kid's crayon drawings and they'd still get on the site.

Well, we now know what the art style of Retro Wolf's next game is going to be. :-D

These sprites look great and I really like the character (and background) variations in these interpretations.  Looking forward to the seeing more whenever they show up.

If I'm not mistaken, then it should be the 16th anniversary of RON today.
So, here's a couple of 16 years later sprites. Time has not been too kind to Davy...

Yes, everyone should hire uncle Davy to perform fancy magic tricks at their children's birthday party.

Thanks, Gurok. It will probably take some time before I get to walk cycles and animations. I'm still relatively inexperienced when it comes to drawing and consistency is one of my biggest problems. I can manage one sprite, but getting the characters look right from different sides and angles is a real challenge to me.

;-D What abs? All I see is low-res pixels. It must be your imagination filling in the gaps.

Thanks for the comments, Grundislav and Gendgi.

Here's some more stuff. These two aren't based on any existing RON characters, but they're drawn in the same style, so I thought they'd fit in here.
Feel free to give them a name and a backstory :)

Yeah, the RON universe is a very interesting place, filled with all sorts of quirky characters and weird storylines. I do recommend looking into it more and playing some of the games. A lot of them are first attemps of aspiring game devs, so the quality is obviously all over the place, but there are some true gems.
