Topic: As Time Goes By
This month's guidelines were set by Mandle

The only rule is that the games must feature the same location in at least two distinct time periods.

This theme lends itself to a time-travel story, but it doesn't have to be: The character(s) could be completely different people in each era, or it could be a reincarnation story, or the main character could be an immortal, or...

Well, anyway, lets just see what you good folk come up with...

Ending:  February 28th

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?board=10.0) are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive (http://www.mags-competition.info/?page=games). For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website. (http://www.mags-competition.info/)

I suspect you didn't read my recent entry for the Fortnightly Writing Contest (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=54312.0)...

It's a bit weird sometimes being a time-traveller as sometimes things are slightly out of whack... Something to do with fuzzy physics at the quantum level I expect...

In the timeline I remembered you did choose that theme for last month's MAGS...I stole it from you as I remembered it producing one of the most amazing games ever made!

So yeah.... YOINK!!!

Oh and:

MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT FOR FUTURE EVENTS:

I'm excited what games will achieve out of this theme. Although it's very interesting, I'm sorry to say that I probably won't have the time to participate.

Oh shit! You jogged my memory...

Riaise did use a montage of the three different time period "cherry" trees from DOTT for the theme image for his last month theme that never happened in this timeline...

That MAGS produced one of the greatest games ever made IMO...

I can't say of course if that theme image influenced the author to create said game...

But it's possible so, maybe if Riaise recreated that montage and posted it we could get back on track to someone coming up with the inspiration for that amazing game...

Nope. Even I did create the cherry tree montage, your time-travel interference has caused it to be lost...FOREVER. 8-0 So you'll have to make do without it. :P

It's also interesting to find out that I'm male in this other timeline. I wonder how that happened? (laugh)

I've been hard at work on this since the contest was announced.

The animation is hilariously bad. It's so bad, I'm actually torn between either fixing it later when I've done more of the game, or leaving as it is because of how funny it looks.
Also, I've just noticed how hard it is to read what the hero says with that text colour. I'll have to see about fixing that.
Title: Re: MAGS February "As Time Goes By" (OPEN)
Post by: Cassiebsg on Wed 08/02/2017 20:14:43
A good rule to have is to always choose light colours for the text, and dark for the border. Then you should be fine.

Love that animation! (laugh)(laugh) You right, it's hilarious! (laugh)(laugh)
Title: Re: MAGS February "As Time Goes By" (OPEN)
Post by: Funkpanzer on Wed 08/02/2017 20:27:04
I started this weekend and convinced a friend to help me write some of the dialogue and text as most of the puzzles will involve reading and dialogue. You play an android with the ability to jump between two points in time as they attempt to rewrite the present (or future depending on how you look at it!). So far it's like a very confusing cross between 12 Monkeys and Edge of Tomorrow without any of the action sequences. :-D

I'm not sure if my game properly fits the theme, but I think it's close enough. The time periods aren't that far apart, relatively speaking, but they are distinct. Here's a teaser:

All of the puzzles, dialog, and graphics have been implemented. I've also sorted out all of the bugs I've found.
But there's plenty of time before the deadline, so I'm going to use that time to refine my entry.
Improve the graphics, make graphics for the interface, search for more bugs, and maybe even adding voice acting. :-D

I've just played The Adventure of the Hero, and I really enjoyed it! The game is fun and the puzzles are very good. The voice acting is great, too (Whoosh! (laugh))! Really good work, I had a great time playing it!

Two nice entries in different genres. I'm a little stuck in the Adventure of the Hero but I don't want to resort to the hint section just yet.

The dad of Memories fade reminds me of my late grandfather. It's sad to think you can forget even people you love most.

I've just played Memories Fade, and what a lovely game it was. Kind of sad, but at the same time heartwarming.
And very nice presentation as well. I can see you put a lot more effort into your entry than I did with mine.

Yeah, I got stuck for a while myself, and I imagine you are probably stuck at the same puzzle, but it's worth perservering because the solution is quite satisfying and clever!

Thanks, Danvzare! :D I'm sure you put just as much effort into yours as I did with mine, it's just that the weakest point of my last MAGS entry were the graphics so I focused on that area a bit more this time around.

I've been fighting the urge to not play Memories Fade for a few days now...

My own dad faded away into senility years before he died to the point where it was a relief when he passed, moreso for him than us I would like to think...

So, this game presents a bit of a real world challenge for me...

I will play it tomorrow though, but I will probably cry my eyes out...

EDIT; I actually played Memories Fade just after I first posted this because I couldn't resist... WHAT AN AMAZING GAME!!!

But... So much torment in my soul right now on which to vote for... Memories Fade was so impacting on an emotional level as well as having great puzzles... But The Adventure Of The Hero was so much time-travelling fun and also had clever puzzles that tested you but never left you feeling cheated.

Arrrrgggghhhhhh!!! I'm being torn in two!!!!!

But... I'm going to have to vote for The Adventure Of The Hero despite the strengths of Memories Fade just because of the fun level I experienced...

Sorry....so sorry...such a hard choice...

Thank you for the lovely comments, Mandle! I understand why you chose The Adventure of the Hero, it is much more lighthearted than my game and the gameplay fits much better with the theme. (nod)

I did waver a bit myself partway through making Memories Fade, as I wondered if it was right to use a subject that is so emotional for so many people. I didn't want to trivialise the issue, or offend anyone by making it into a game. I'm glad I stuck with it, though. I've only had good comments so far, so it seems to have worked out as I hoped it would.

You handled the subject with honesty and compassion. I loved it how you didn't shy away from showing the exasperation of the son from time to time. Like I said, I've been in his shoes, and it's hard sometimes to not feel some blame towards the afflicted parent. I guess it's just natural to feel that your parents will always be there to take care of you, so when that's gone we can feel cheated at times.

The Adventure of the Hero by Danvzare
Spoiler

What a great fun! loved the puzzles, and realizing how to get that "last" items was awesome! Well done! (nod)
And the voice acting helps a lot. Had some great solving this and "Wooshing" around! (laugh)

Memories Fade by Riaise
Spoiler

Very well done, good puzzles great story telling. All the puzzles made sense (almost, as some cables weren't doing anything ;) ). Really lovely way to tell the story. BTW, my parents have such a vacuum too. (laugh)

I voted for "the Hero" has it was heaps fun to play, but then again Memories wasn't meant as a funny entry, and in that it has succeed brilliantly.

I'm glad you stuck with it too. You handled this sensitive concept with a brilliant finesse. (nod)

Thank you, everyone, it  means a lot. :-*

I've just fixed a bug in one of the puzzles and altered the puzzle itself slightly so that it works a bit better. Can I upload the fix now, or should I wait until voting is over?

I usually say that fixing a game-breaking bug shortly after the deadline is okay (in order to make one's entry somewhat playable). But minor tweaks and alterations should wait until after the voting.

The Adventure of the Hero by Danvzare
Spoiler
Charming and very whimsical. I had a great time with this game and it was much longer than I expected. Most of the puzzles are common sense and most of the outcomes are very silly. Good use of alternate endings! This was a blast to play.

Memories Fade
Spoiler
I actually quite liked the various puzzles in this. They seemed like a conscious decision to move away from simple item combining (which was good). I even liked the wire untangling puzzle. I thought it was a great way to communicate that sort of problem in the context of a puzzle. This story had a good amount of depth and emotional resonance. Fred's gruff attitude made it very believable. Parts of the photo fading in, and the photo being used as a central anchor for the story were very nice touches! A fantastic game with a great ending!

I voted for Memories Fade. Great job, both entrants!

They were both very nice and fun games, but it was hard to decide between two such different games,
whereas The Adventure of the Hero by Danvzare was a fun fantasy adventure with hilarious voice acting,
Memories Fade by Riaise was a poignant and emotional story about a man's relationship with his father.

Both had good stories and well balanced puzzles, but I voted for Memories Fade since it was just so heartwarming.
Still, I got a few chuckles out of The Adventure of the Hero as well.

Two of the best MAGS entries I have even seen:

One a ton of fun, the other deep and bittersweet.

Congratz to Riaise, but both are winners in my book.

Thanks guys for making my chosen theme a great round with only the highest of quality!

Thank you so much everyone! :-D Very well done to Danvzare, your game was fantastic and I think the competition was probably a lot closer than the poll makes it look.

I'll have a think and see what theme I can come up with for next month. ;-D
