Title: Music in your games.
Post by: SergioAntonio on Fri 24/08/2018 20:49:39
I am going to start working on a game based on the first man to land on the moon.. the Apollo 11 flight.
I also want to use "Fly me too the moon" as the main theme song.... I have a question if anyone  knows....
Can I just get anyone to sing the song and use it in my game, or are the lyrics copyrighted? how do music rights work?

Thanks for any advice.

I dont know how to delete this post.... but I already got my answer.. I have to get permission to use this song.. is copyrighted.

You can't delete it I'm afraid. A mod will likely lock the thread to ensure it drifts off into the void. Or something.

OK.. anyway I really want that song in my game... I'm afraid to call the copyright holders and ask how much will it cost me to include it in my game... i'm sure its something I can not afford.

Here's some info: https://www.ascap.com/Home/Music-Career/articles-advice/ascapcorner/corner16.aspx

I'd ask them. If you don't plan on selling the game, they might agree to very low fees, maybe?

I recently longplayed Heartland Deluxe ( http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/813/ )

I like the song that plays at the end, it is an old song. But once I uploaded the longplay video to youtube the YT algorithms reminded me that there is copyrighted music in my video. You tube is big and has to do this, but I you don't plan on selling your game and otherwise don't play with intellectual property (popular TV show fangame or so...) I'd say just use it for your small hobbyist game. The compyright holders probably won't even notice, and if they do they better like your game or if they are real evil they'd first have to prove how your free game made them lose any money. For the example of Heartland Deluxe the song used is not even in the credits on the AGS page and I just made youtube remove the audio from the uploaded vid... :P
If you however make a huge game that you want to sell, then you should totally get their permission or pay the fees they demand! Or write your own song about flying to the moon ;)

Actually I do plan on selling my games. so, I want to pay royalties for the music.
I also want to compensate in some way any voice actors I might use in the future, its only fair.

That panoramic effect.... did you pre-render the room at every angle? I'm not aware that ags has any 3d effect features.

Heartland Deluxe uses the panorama module http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=27632.0
this is the very reason I played this game.
