Topic: Crossover

Description:
The hot new trend recently has been cinematic universes. Everything's got to be connected to everything else! So that's why the challenge this month is to pick two or more works of fiction and combine them.

Do you have two games you made before that you want to make a sequel to? Then now's your chance!
Never made a game before? Then why not have Sherlock Holmes meet Dracula!
Don't have any art skills? Make a special crossover episode between Reality on the Norm and Maniac Mansion Mania!

The possibilities are endless! Just make sure it's combining two or more works of fiction, regardless of whether those works of fiction are games, movies, books, or comics, that you or someone else has made. As long as it's possible to see the original source materials, then you're good to go.

Special Guidelines:
If you're making a crossover/sequel to two of your past games. You are allowed to reuse the sprites from those past games, and if necessary, a background or two.
Of course, all publically available assets can be used at any time.

So, it's just 2 of any famous characters: Bugs bunny meets Frankenstein,   Barney Rubble meets Dr Jekyll,  Sherlock Holmes meets Agather Christie.....

Is this correct?

If doesn't just have to be famous characters.
You could have your "The Rat Pack" crossover with Cat's "Cornelius Cat", assuming you got her permission.
You could even have more than two if you wanted do be a bit more ambitious. Or even crossover the settings instead of the characters (assuming the settings are recognizable enough).

I think TheFrighther's joke perfectly sums up the general idea.  :-D

It's kind of hard for me to come up with good crossovers for my characters since most of the games take place in different centuries,
but I've been toying with the idea of having the viking guardsman (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1919/) meeting the pope (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2070/)...

You can always divert a bit from "historically correct" and go with "historical parody"... then all is game.  ;)

Or maybe you could do a meeting with an historical-legendary figure as Prester John.

Maybe you could team up with someone else to make it an RoN game?
If you and/or someone else could come up with all the ideas I'd even be willing to do graphics and the programming if no one better could be found.

That'd be an interesting thought--maybe one of my previous characters, like my skunk angel Rosaura helping Mika Huy for instance.

But, back on the current topic of this thread--best of luck to all who enter this.

Well, I'm planning to do a crossover of Thomas Carnacki, ghost finder and Armand Broussard, werewolf hunter. I haven't figured out the story yet, but I do have some game play ideas and made the base sprites for the two characters this weekend.

If anyone needs some characters or backgrounds this week, let me know. I could use the practice while trying to figure out details of my game. If no on needs the help, I might just make some generic stuff that anyone can use for this and any future MAGs.

The last line says "Of course, all publically available assets can be used at any time." So I'd say yeah. As long as you stick within any MMM rules it should be no problem.
If you need any help being able to complete your game, feel free to message me. If you need characters made, a couple of animations, a couple of backgrounds, or grunt work level coding. I'd even be willing to convert MMM assets to the Tumbleweed template.

Hmmm, didn't know there were rules to follow about the MMM world, I'll check that out.
Thanks both for your answers!
I'll keep in mind your offering VampireWombat, I'm super bad at drawing and wouldn't mind getting some help for the (only) background I did for this game.

Edit: oh, BTW, I'm trying to crossover MM with Alice in Wonderland.

Well, I can say that Dog Rat's game is doing better than my own. I still have to finish a walk cycle for my game and figure out the specific locations, npcs, etc. The general setting is going to be San Antonio in either the 20s or early 30s. And I did make a targeting gui yesterday so everyone in the game will be able to be shot. Not that there's any particular reason to shoot anyone as of yet. But the first Carnacki story has him using a pistol, so I'm incuding it...

Well, it will certainly be interesting since it seems like only 2 games are being made this month.
I have at least narrowed down my game to being sometime in the 20s and have some specific locations in San Antonio in mind. Unfortunately I can't find enough reference to be accurate, so I'm going to have to do an amalgam using similar places that I can find the reference for. So, I'll finally be starting backgrounds today.

So... How's everyone doing?
Migraines means that I've been able to do less than planned. It looks like I'm going to have to "cheat" and use Display commands to fill in gaps I don't have time to properly do. But luckily being long winded is in character for Carnacki.

Well, this is it, hope it works fine. Alice in Wonderland and Maniac Mansion crossover. Had to cut a few things and, unfortunately, it's not as "zany" as I would liked it to be, but, oh, well, what MAGS game doesn't end up with less content than originally planned after all.
Many thanks to VampireWombat who did a lot of the art, specially all the Alice sprites and walk-cycles (I'm terrible at it), and also gave me cool advices for the coding part.

Being able to switch from tiny to monstrous is a fun idea and a great game mechanic. The Cheshire Cat animation is cool, and he has fun dialogue. I got thrown in a cell at the end. I'm curious to know what the other endings are.

Well, I'm not really sure about the weird noises, I don't remember putting any sound there, so I should check it. But yes, you got the most unsatisfying ending and the one that involved less puzzle solving, so if you want it, you might explore a little more to see if you find another way in. The end game is kind of abrupt, that's for sure.

Given the number of times I failed to finish something after an extension, not going to ask.
I think I can still salvage it to be somewhat playable in the next 2 hours if I completely cut out any walk cycles...

Ok, so there must be something wrong with my RAR files, I had a similar problem when sending some game files to VampireWombat some days ago, maybe some compatibility issue, I don't know.
I will try to upload a zip file when I get home tonight, in case of anyone having the same problem.

It's not the 1st time I have had problems with rar files. Last time was Slasher's game.

Well, there are people that have downloaded an unpacked it. Maybe my winrar just got too old and you are raring it with a newer version that is incompatible or something like that.
It's not the 1st time I have had problems with rar files. Last time was Slasher's game.

I use 7Zip. It's free and works great with RAR files. I didn't have a problem unpacking Alice.

I also have 7zip installed and that one also complained about the file being damaged.  :-\

The Ubuntu Archive Manager also complains about the file being damaged. But using P7Zip Desktop seemed to have worked.

Umm...what if we just say that the first puzzle of the Alice game is getting it running?  :-D

Haha, after the success of "It's not a bug, it's a feature", we have the new version: "It's not a damaged file, it's a puzzle." Maybe I should include the software to open it in the walkthrough. (laugh)

EDIT: okay, if you had troubles with the RAR version, I have now uploaded the game in a zip file. You can download it from HERE. (https://www.mediafire.com/file/gjn1catbhm62dsa/Alice_In_Maniacland.zip/file)

Looks like I'm the first to comment on the three entries!

Here I go....

Alice in Maniacland by Dog Rat
Spoiler
Crossing Alice with Manic Mansion is BRILLIANT! I loved the puzzles and really enjoyed the graphics. I liked how the puzzles revolved around the character's ability to change her size. Multiple endings is a nice bonus for a MAGS game. My only downside to this game is that there is essentially one task that SHOULD be the beginning  of the game but it really is the end :( I played all the endings and they really are abrupt, even with the time constraints of a MAGS entry

Ego in Planet of the Apes by Durq
Spoiler
Um. Not much to comment, really...

Space Cross: The BSG Team by Cassiebsg
Spoiler
AWESOME graphics and I think they are new for this game rather than reused from a previous game? With Cassie, you can expect that one of the themes in the crossover will be BSG :) I am not going to mention what it's crossed with just in case someone's reading this without playing the game first, BUT I will say that I had a LOT of laughs from the game and was not expecting that! Puzzles were on the simple side so the strength of this game is the graphics and the idea of the themes being crossed as well as the humour

I feel that it was the most well-rounded from beginning to end and my overall enjoyment playing the game was with this entry.

Well done!

To be fair, I re-used Starbuck from my previous game... only had to render a new speech animation for him (which turned out to be harder that it sounds  (roll)) since in the previous game he had portrait speech.  ;)

But I'm glad you enjoyed it.  :-D

Ok what about the other characters and backgrounds? (I was mainly referring to the beautiful 3D backgrounds)

I forgot to add that the use of playing multiple characters was a nice bonus to me!

Those were made from scratch, yes.  (nod)
Also there are 3 extra npcs in the source that we didn't got to plug, and I also had the last member of the team, but he ended up cut due to time restrains.

Found some time to play the two other games. Here are my thoughts.

Ego in the planet od the apes:
Spoiler
A little enjoyable game. The humour was crude like it was stated but I'll admit it made me chuckle a couple of times, so well done!

Space cross:

I have to say I haven't watch any of the two TV shows portrayed here, I know them by name only, and so I didn't get a lot of the jokes and references (just the most famous catch-phrase of one of them). Nevertheless, it's clear to me that this game had the most developed storyline and puzzles of this MAGS round, so it gets my vote. Good job!

Thanks to all participants and voters.

Thanks everyone who voted for our game.  (nod)
I'll have to talk with MorganW, since it's OUR game, not just mine.  ;) In fact, maybe more his, since he wrote it.  (laugh)

Apologies Morgan. I don't always have a lot of time when I'm putting together the voting tables and polls and occasionally miss this kind of thing. I sometimes ask people to tell me if I've missed anything. I should make that a habit. I've added your name where I can  (nod)
