Title: What's in the box?
Post by: AnasAbdin on Mon 14/01/2019 15:10:43
Guess the object, if you're correct post one for us to guess and so on.
Rules may change as we progress..

Here's a guess (try to be as precise as possible):

is it a crucible of some kind?  Cant make out the scale of it, perhaps one for creating toy lead soldiers or fantasy pieces?

It's a little smaller than your usual coffee cup  ;-D

umm, im stumped ...   hows about a hint! is this related to preparing food/consumables in anyway?   is that thing at the bottom a hollow spout or a solid protrusion of some kind (hard to tell form the photo)
Title: Re: What's in the box?
Post by: AnasAbdin on Mon 14/01/2019 21:17:58
It's not related to food or consumables. The spout is not hollow. This was used for fun.

A cup for jacks?
Title: Re: What's in the box?

ok this is going to be a wild guess, but based on the background image you used, the fact you said it was used for fun, the seemingly burnt looking innards, and its seemingly vintage age.

Is it a retainer to safely ignite gun powder, perhaps it was used by people to trigger fireworks/powder or something,  the protrusion being an end to attach a stick/handle for safe distance?

a wild guess though heh

lol.. ah didn't honestly think it was that,  nice.. ok here is the next one

For some the function of this might be obvious,  however I am looking for its specific historical application too,  I shall dispense some hints if people are struggling.

yes,  but from where?

Here is a hint,  some of them where ""delivered""  to some cites in England, much to England's displeasure at the time.

EDIT: hehe, indeed Gilbert, has a striking resemblance to BB-8 :D

um, looks like a serial port on the top there,  i see a volume slider, and 3 small holes on the device itself, perhaps this is an old audio sampler for computers that can also record voices?

Title: Re: What's in the box?

The three dots at the top look like they could be a microphone. It resembles some kind of pedal. But the knob looks more like some kind of gain rather than volume given the symbols. It also looks like it maybe has a VGA port.

So some kind of handheld magnifier or scanner?

So it is some kind of signal converter.
Audio to bits+bytes?
a pocket transformer?
DC to AC? (to CD?)

why do you censor so much, I post a black image next and you have to guess what it could be :P
Title: Re: What's in the box?
Post by: Galen on Mon 21/01/2019 16:18:22
Looks vaguely like a composite/s-video/rca to vga convertor https://rukminim1.flixcart.com/image/832/832/jj0bbm80/selector-box/e/6/z/smacc-av-to-vga-composite-video-tv-vga-s-video-composite-rca-av-original-imaf6ghhhutcm3et.jpeg?q=70 but definitely only vaguely.

So... 'CD', and two ports that look like they could be 3.5mm. So possibly some kind of audio convertor with a strange output. Not any kind of phono amp. Still think that looks like a vga.

Maybe... audio to video (i.e. spectograph/waveform?)? Something for splitting a combined video/audio input into VGA and 3.5mm?

well, to be honest i was pretty stumped,  had a bit of luck with google image searches with an exact search term "pocket signal converter serial port"  first result looked quite similar
https://www.superdroidrobots.com/images/TE/TE-079-001.jpg

Galen brought it home though, well done

Curious about the volume slider thing on it though?
Title: Re: What's in the box?

I was expecting a "Pocket dial up modem" but I guess signal converter will do as well.
The slider is used to tighten/loosen the screws..

Looks like something related to a rotary engine?
Title: Re: What's in the box?
Post by: Galen on Fri 25/01/2019 19:27:41
The camshaft rotor(?) from a wankle engine, right? That rounded triangular shape (a reuleaux triangle)  rotates around in a square-shaped motion.
Title: Re: What's in the box?
Post by: Jack on Fri 25/01/2019 20:02:11
Correct. Very lively little motor. Timed explosions on both ends send it around that cylinder in an eccentric fashion, eliminating a lot of parts and kinetic loss compared to a reciprocating engine. Only problem still is the seals on the corners wearing out faster than a normal engine.

dayowlron and Galen could have a race to see who's next.

Title: Re: What's in the box?

koos got it

"An odometer, that is, a device for measuring distance. This is an old design, improved by Leonardo Da Vinici. As you rolled along, a peg would turn the upper wheel at a set distance. When the upper wheel turned a complete rotation, a ball would drop into a box. Walk the distance of whatever you're measuring, and you can count the balls to know how far it is. "

So what it is is a type of transmission which smoothly goes from underdrive to overdrive, invented by Leonardo da Vinci. Our materials tech tree is still not developed enough to completely replace step-type gear transmissions in high torque applications like cars, but there is a company that makes these for bicycles and some other uses. It's quite revolutionary.

Ein video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN8CCY1vFC8).

Next turn to whoever can come up with something easier.

There's only the expected size in there... not a Dr.Who kind of small on the outsize big on the inside.
I was thinking once u went inside there would be stairs or a ladder down, however I agree that is a terrible design for a bus stop.

Some where in the North of Portugal, exactly where I no longer remember, been a long time I took that picture.
Yes, there's only place for 1 maybe 2 people inside.
I'm guessing they maybe just reused it as a bus stop and was originally built for something like a Guard post, or just a weather shelter by the road, in case of bad weather.

Or is it for cementing to the outside of a brick wall to prank people into thinking someone is trapped in the wall?

Or is it for attaching to a robotic arm that repeatedly goes up and down playing one chord over and over again on a piano?

Yes, but by look it up, i wanted to know so much what it was used for that i did an image search and found it. That is against the rules which is why I am not guessing, but I still think that the answers that others are listing are better uses than the one it is intended for by the inventor. Cassiebsg you're absolutely right. It's called "seeding finger" for artificial insemination!

Your turn!

Btw, what are the exact rules?

Obviously you are not allowed to use the image and do a graphic scan research.
But are you allowed to surf and research online and try to find the box object?

I mean you are allowed to guess the object if you already know it, so you should be allowed to research and surf and stumble across it as well, right??

Hang on a sec -- why exactly is the finger set up like a medical anatomy model? I mean, if its role is just to inseminate, couldn't it be just a straight colour without the illustrated inner workings of the hand?

Also...what species does it inseminate? Human?

Lol, man n fist has a critical mind! I like it!

I have no idea why it is shaped and modeled like that.
It's a weird object, that's why I put it here.
But you can google it and do research on it and feel free to share in case you find interesting information on it.

It's used for the female species of a race called humans populating earth. ^^

The human mind works in mysterious and devious ways I guess.

I have nothing to share, so the thread is opened to whomever posts first.  (nod)

Sacrifice some chin to protect the forehead.

I was thinking it was for a motorcycle sidecar, to protect your face from the wind. Presumably you would need a tight fitting and streamlined hat to go with it.

Sorry have been busy. I am going to give it to mkennedy.
The actual stated use was to protect the face in a snow storm. i guess it could protect it from a dust storm as well as from wind or rain.

Looks like a stone to sharpen a knife? and a burst to clear the leftovers?
Or maybe an eraser, with brush to clean the leftovers (that we normally just use the back of our hand)

Otherwise, no, have no idea what it is.  (laugh)

Uhm, ink eraser? The colour of it makes me think it's not for regular graphite pencil... maybe those ink pointers pens? Or maybe from an old typewriter?

Don't know why, but when I looked at the image first time I got a mental image of my grandfather's desk... not that I remember ever having seen one like that before though... but maybe I did and it's stored in my subconscious?  :)

Hmm I think Stupot's in-laws are Japanese, so I'm going with an eraser for traditional Japanese ink writing?

Come to think it actually makes sense to have the brush. You can't use the back of your hand to clean paper after you erased on a typewriter.

Anyone feel free to jump in, since I have nothing.
