Topic: Kids
Chosen by cat, Marcin K and CaptainD
Deadline: October 31st

Make a game where children play an important role.

  • The player character can be a kid but doesn't have to be.
  • The game can be made for children or for adults.
  • It can be funny and lighthearted or dark and depressing, even horror is fine!

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

Great, now the theme to the Pippi Longstocking movie is stuck in my head.

Since the turnout for last month was so low, I will consider making a game after all. Maybe I'll give another try at making a game based on 80s kid horror movies...

Okay, fine. So it was actually a song by The Black Ingvars. Which I have no clue the lyrics of due to not knowing Swedish...

Edit: Would it be okay to use the framing device I considered for May as long as everything else about the story is new?

So, the plan is to split up the game to have 3 different main stories in a different style. Due to watching Mom's Got a Date With a Vampire and My Mom's A Werewolf yesterday, the first story is going to be My Best Friend's A Werewolf.

Mandle - Ooo, an eldritch abomination simulator? Sounds fun.

heltenjon - Här Kommer Pippi Långstrump seems to be the full title. By Black Ingvars.

Here is the translation, VW:

Have you seen my monkey,
My beautiful cute little monkey
Have you seen Mr Nilson
Yes that is really his name
Have you seen my villa
My Villa Villekullevilla
Do you do you want to know
Why the villa is called that?
It's because there lives Pippi Long Stockings,
Tjolahopp tjolahej tjolahoppsan-sa (basically nonsense words a la tralala)
There lives Pippi Long Stockings
Yes, there I actually live
It is not bad
I have (a) monkey, (a) horse and (a) villa
A bag full of money
Is also good to have
Come now, all friends
Everyone I know
Now we will have fun
Tjolahej etc.
Here comes Pippi Long Stockings
Tjolahopp etc.
Here comes Pippi Long Stockings
Here I really/actually come

(Pippi is the girl with red hair in the middle of the graphics presenting the theme in this thread.)

I now have a basic idea for all but one of the stories. I'm leaning towards something sci fi, perhaps with an alien.

heltenjon: Thanks. They definitely don't sound as good in English. Which probably explains why the lyrics from the American movie are what's in my head.

Actually, Pippi is Swedish, so more likely it was dubbed from Swedish to English.  ;)
Title: Re: MAGS October "Kids" (OPEN)
Post by: VampireWombat on Thu 03/10/2019 13:41:14
The American movie was my first exposure to Pippi Longstocking, since it came out when I was a kid. So no dubbing was required. Then at some later point I saw the tv series/movies made from the series. And a few weeks ago I watched the first episode of the animated series...

Slasher - Alien: The musical? Inspired by the diner scene from Spaceballs, perhaps?
And it's doubtful our ideas would clash unless yours are influenced by Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Goosebumps, The 90s Outer Limits, Spaced Invaders, Super 8, etc.

To make sure I don't run out of time again, I'm going to be making the game with dummy graphics before importing any of my own. So I will start programming today.

Slasher - The alien is named Desmond? And it sings and dances? I'm now imagining a mix of aliens from Chewy: Escape From F5, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure with E.T. and the chestburster from Spaceballs.

Ah, so Slasher's going The Little Shop of Horrors route? At least that still works with being a musical. Though I suppose to fit the theme, it'll be closer to the Little Shop cartoon series. I had completely forgotten that existed until today.

I'm considering subjecting myself to reading a Goosebumps book, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to go that far.

I've never read any Goosebumps choose your own adventure books. I was a little past the target age when Goosebumps books originally came out, so they weren't even on my radar. So I've actually only read maybe 2 of them. But I have like 10 of them I got off of Ebay sometime this decade. But none are in the Give Yourself Goosebumps line. Perhaps one day I'll get some and attempt making a game based on one. Who knows...

One story in my game is vaguely choose your own adventure. I'm considering the 3rd story to be an adaptation of a Lovecraft story, but not sure which one since Dreams in the Witch House is the one I'm most familiar with and there is the long game being made by rongel.

Looking awesome, Slasher!

I spent the day completing my walkcycle for the kids, coming up with 72 names of both male and female genders for them, figuring out how to have them walk around the map properly, feeling very creepy searching online for portraits of children for the characters' stats GUIs, and figuring out how to make floating GUIs that don't go off the screen when the characters get close to the edge.

Yes, the GUIs... They float... We all float down here... And when you're down here with us...

YOU'LL FLOAT TOO!!!

The whole Goosebumps  'Choose your own adventure' is a great idea.... Maybe a bit too much for a MAG in a month... However, you could make a few alternative endings by choice decisions....

Would love to see this as a full length game..

In some ways it's easier than a normal adventure game, in other ways it's more difficult. The Lets Play I watched of the game version of Choose Your Own Nightmare: Night of the Werewolf only gives 2 choices at a time. So I'll be doing the same. There's plenty time to do it. I just have to find my groove.

I think the real trick in doing a good "Choose Your Own Adventure" book or game is to be sure to be fair and consistent.

I always hate it when the "safe" choice gets you killed, or when the story totally shifts to different genres depending on your choices.

The old book "By Balloon To The Sahara" did the latter and it still annoys me... How does the choice to hide from nomad bandits (or not) result in the story being all about rescuing a princess (or suddenly battling aliens?!)

DISCLAIMER: COMMENTS BASED ON MY MEMORY FROM YEARS AGO.

I think mine is shelved... I just started to get too creeped out by what I was making.

At first, the idea of playing the villain from a horror movie sounded fun, but then, around the time I started importing kids' photos for the character profiles I started to have a bad feeling.

Even though I decided to switch to cartoony portraits for the kids I started worrying about the kinds of people who might find the game and, ahem, enjoy playing the role of the stalker and killer of children a bit too much.

So, if I ever do anything with it, I will switch the role of the player to the kids fighting against Pennywise, which would be a lot more work than I will have time for this month.

Not really. I tried to work on some sprites on my Kindle yesterday, but it only further proved that all of my drawing skills are with a mouse. I have watched enough stuff this last week to cobble together most of the My Best Friend Is A Werewolf segment at least. I will probably re-watch The Willies today or tomorrow to help with tying things together.

Well, I think if it's a game about kids, but aimed at an adult audience then go with your original idea and give a right scare horror... But of it's aimed at a kids audience then you need to tone it down and adjust to kids... Kids like the occasional scare, if it's handled right...

Go with your gut instinct  (laugh)

Ah good, there is one complete game. Mine isn't as far as hoped. Headaches with photosensitivity and a freak snowstorm kind of threw things off for me this week. The second story will probably have to use an urban legend as a base like the first one so that I can focus on My Best Friend Is A Werewolf.

My entry is done and is being tested.

Unfortunately, my grandaughter has not been able to do all her lines so I had to do them.. I'm disappointed but none the less I have kept it the same and used another boy.... and the story remains as a kids sci-fi epic, with singing ;)

"It was a hot summers evening and the stars were very bright.

Peter and Jimmy are out playing, as they often are, oblivious to what was just about to occur.".

Since I can't make a worthwhile game, I'm not going to push myself to complete something mediocre again. So, I'm dropping out.
Good luck to anyone else still working on a game.

Maybe you just don't have the time to make a game on your own in one month. IMO, two of your MAGS games (Mystery Meat Mayhem and the Summoned) end when they should take off.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. My game is done.

You're living the theme then.

Yes, that's why I decided to move on from MAGS for the most part. Something always happens where I can't make a decent game. And most attempts working with someone else didn't go so well...
But working on them has been good practice.

Creamy: Your Download link fails...

VampireWombat: It could be that you aim to do too much and that is where the trouble may start....  Even if you only made 2 rooms and put in quite a bit of game content with a good story line and with a few puzzles that would still be classed as a game.  You can do it if you keep within a frame of possibility and within the time limit  (nod)
I may also enter next MAG and I'm always up to lending a helping hand with others' game...

I think I'm just better off working on games without the restraints of MAGS. Like making the Massimo and Twitch Christmas Adventure game that I failed to make last year.

I just voted. Some thoughts:

Paper Planes
Spoiler
I really like the graphic and creativity behind this dream-like world. What a great idea! I flew the airplane around for a while till I felt that I didn't see any goal or gameplay and then quite the game. I think the strength is the environment
[close]

Desmond
Spoiler
More of a traditional puzzle-solver. I only was able to identify two puzzles and they seemed to have been solved by hit and miss. I do understand the constraints of the deadline though! This one got my vote because it had more gameplay to it
[close]

Good job on both entries!

I have to agree with Shadow1000.

I think Paper Planes shows a great concept but very little content. I also spent, on several occasions, about 18 minutes trying to find the goal and unless I am missing the point I felt there was nothing to be achieved.  Creamy could, with time, turn this game into something really unique.

I've finished Slasher's game.

Nice dialogs. I like when it's getting musical (even if I'd rather have the music match the melodies).
The graphics are average. They aren't neat or well animated but do the job.
The puzzles are the weak point for me. Ultimately they're a matter of trial and error, which tends to annoy me. But they weren't that difficult either.
All in all an OK game, especially considering that you're busy with Maelstrom Obscura.

And my vote goes to:

Once your paper plane is written, you need to :
- find the correct picture that matches the word on your plane
- land on it (spacebar).

Rinse and repeat.

What an absolutely ingenious idea!

. Honestly, this game really stands out in the thinking behind it and the polish.

There is a balance when creating a game between not disclosing too much of the gameplay so it's not just a walkthrough, and giving away enough so players get stuck. Unfortunately, it seems that so far the players who tried this one, myself included, ended up being clued out until it was pretty much a giveaway. I wonder if some tweaking to the instructions would make a big difference. Or, you can just tell the player from the get-go what the idea was and allow him/her to explore and discover as I did. Personally, I had a really good experience once I got the idea even though it was basically given away.

Well done

@Creamy: Lovely idea. Though I didn't understand what to do without reading the spoilers, either.
On the title screen, I thought the explanation meant that the feature of landing needs to be written (i.e. it is not in the game, yet)
Maybe you could change the text to "Where it matches" or "Where appropriate"

@Slasher:
Spoiler
Is there a hint for the number puzzle somewhere or do I have to try all combinations?

Feedback when you press the spacebar should help hopefully.
Spoiler
A crossed out drop of ink when the plane is blank. Different lines of dialog when the wrong picture is chosen.

I hadn't thought of that. "Where appropriate" sounds good.

I don't think I made myself clear.

Once the general idea was explained, I was able to figure it out from the feedback and so on. But until then, I just flew around an airplane till I felt there was no game here and gave up. I think this was the consensus of the other players as well.

Sometimes what we know we think others do to... This is not always the case....

But some kind of hint at the beginning would at least give a direction...

Cat... It's an old type of puzzle... keep trying the numbers... One will put you through  (laugh)

Is this what happens or just an idea how to improve it? Because in the version I downloaded neither happens.

Btw, what is the green cube supposed to be? Why do I have to colour the plane green before I can write on it?

It's how I intend to improve the game when the MAGS competition is over. But I'll try to think of other clues.

The cube is just there for fun. You don't have to use it. Its color can be changed by pressing the spacebar.

Ah, I didn't realise that. It felt a bit out of place, tbh. Maybe a paint bucket or big color splash would fit more nicely in the concept.

@Slasher
I finished the game.
The singing and rapping was fun, I wasn't expecting that. The sound quality of the recordings was rather bad, though. Maybe you should get a new microphone (probably even a 15â,¬ headset will do). The recipe and garbage puzzle were okay, but I hated the phone puzzle.

Two very different games this month, both fitting the topic very well!

I voted for

This game was made with my granddaughter and so not too difficult. I only have laptop built-in mic so the quality was not high. The game was put together fairly quickly. Finding the 4 numbered telephone from 4 numbers is not exactly that bad and I have seen it quite a few times... What did you expect?

While Creamy's entry was a good concept it was unfulfilling until he explained more about it by having to give further info... without it who actually completed it?

We've had a tie at least once, in September 2018. I *think* I recall at least one more in the past but I wouldn't bet my head on it...

IIRC we had two ties in 2017 (or was it ‘16?) but we also had two months with no entries so we still ended up with 12 finalists for the MAGGIES
