Yes, you're on the right track.
1. First you must have read the instructions first, I think you've done this step already though:

you need to have read the book from the library first.
the info in the book tells you the location where to 'design the emblem'.
2. Secondly you need to find... (you've done this for certain already):

an example of that emblem, which is indeed that piece of fabric with the pentagon symbol
3. And the 3rd thing you need is...:

something to carve the emblem with...
small hint:

which might be found somewhere in the first episode...
medium hint:

somewhere in the second half of the episode...
big hint:

maybe you should check the dungeon/prison area a bit closer...
4. So finally:

while you have the piece of fabric plus the stone, go to the location as said in the book and use the rock on the floor to draw the emblem on the floor.
this triggers something, which is up to you again to find out ;)
Thank you for taking the time to write all these tips. It was a pixel hunt to find the book but I got there eventually. You've done a great job to remake this game.

I think that maybe Bertolino is stuck at the very beginning. A general tip for this game (the original version is the same): when you find something or open a secret compartment or open a chest, look inside and take whatever, look inside again because you might find another item or a clue. Keep looking until the game tells you "It is empty" or there is nothing to see.
For Bertolino:

Go towhere you picked up the flask and look there - you will find a coin. You can now proceed.
