Welcome to MAGS July.  Who will go the extra mile to finish a game this month? If you're reading this, I know you're gonna go far. The theme is:
Distance
Provided byIntense Degree
Deadline July 31st

It could be huge or tiny…

(https://i.imgur.com/Fi4IM9d.png)

It might be the problem or obstacle…

(https://i.imgur.com/5KeY6Ht.png)

Or you might need to put some of it behind you…

(https://i.imgur.com/TE2a5MM.png)

Maybe it needs to be calculated or measured…

(https://i.imgur.com/cLStgoQ.png)

Maybe it’s something else that’s in the distance…

(https://i.imgur.com/8a4Dncb.jpg)

Or maybe there is a different application entirely…

What is MAGS?
Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules
Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualize your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days, and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

Oh damn, that one sent my brain into overdrive! I've been busy doing some geometry trickery in pure HTML/CSS, culminating in creating a rough 3D sphere - and now you got me wondering if the same would be possible in AGS. Not just code-wise. I'm more concerned about my CPU/GPU not going ablaze from the effort (laugh) I'm not promising anything, and even if I do make something it's most likely not going to be a game - but the idea's been planted 8-0

I don't know if I'll have time, back at work even as the U.S. gets swamped with COVID. :/ But I just had a really interesting idea for this that I'm going to explore and see if I can make a good game out of it.

Maybe I can think of an idea that I can actually execute. Currently the theme has made me think scifi, though.

I "Might" attempt this. I had an idea of a western and a steampunk sci fi game where a cowboy(Or whoever, its a work in progress) lives in a simple western town and needs to get to the "stars"(Enter the steampunk town and elements). I am not great at graphics and my idea is a bit ambitious.. But I will take a whack at it and see if I can come up with something. Room in progress below(I know it's not impressive.) But I am using different techniques to make the images for the game.

Definitely hoping to get something in this month. I might just aim for something tiny and quick and see how it goes.

Update: Blah, disregard. I have a good idea but it's not something I can make in three weeks, at least not as a playable game instead of a story on rails. Good luck everybody!

I may or may not attempt making a game this month. I had an idea yesterday, but then I realized it would basically play like a section of Knights of the Old Republic 2 with some elements from 2 or 3 scifi movies thrown in...

If someone has an idea for a game, but needs help with graphics, feel free to contact me. Otherwise I will attempt to get a better idea for a game.

Nevermind. I think having the Blackwell Unbound Soundtrack playing in the background led to me having an idea. So, I will be attempting an Urban Fantasy game.

While I would encourage anything to get as many entries as possible, using a game that you have been working on in the previous month isn’t really in the spirit of MAGS.

We recently relaxed the rules to allow the use of pre-made assets (sprites, music, snippets of code maybe) but the idea is to make a game, from scratch, within the calendar month.

Ok, I will just present it as a different game, then.

More seriously: having worked on it for 2 days last month, shouldn't mean I can't enter it. But anyway, I don't mind.

Well, you haven’t revealed how much or little work you did in those two days. It might be negligible. Or you might have done more work than someone who can only put in 20 minutes a night for the whole month. The topic reveal is essentially the starting gun. We often allow extensions but I’ve never granted a head-start (or been asked for one).

Distance no object

  cMeyers.SayBubble("What are you working on at the moment?");
  cGuthrie.SayBubble("Space travel.");
  cMeyers.SayBubble("Space travel?");
  cGuthrie.SayBubble("What you see is a space sphere capable of travelling vast distances in seconds.");
  cMeyers.SayBubble("Get away!");
  cGuthrie.SayBubble("It just needs one or two things and it's good to go.");
  cMeyers.SayBubble("Well, good luck with that.");
  cMeyers.SayBubble("I've got to get to work.");
  cGuthrie.SayBubble("You still at Antonio's pizza's?");
  cMeyers.SayBubble("Yeah. I'de better get a move on. Antonio does not like me being late.");
  cMeyers.SayBubble("See you later, Ricky.");
  cGuthrie.SayBubble("Yeah. See you later, Gordon.");
  cGuthrie.SayBubble("Now, where did I put my Flux Capacitor 'Rickorite' mixture?");

I'm too big of a scifi nerd to be silent... A Flux Capacitor is used for time travel, not space travel. Though time travel would be useful for delivering pizza. You could have it there the moment it's ordered.

And on a game making note, I'm thinking of starting Screenshot Saturday for my game. Which has led to me thinking of a way to use the background from last month in this month's game.

Distance no object

Pizza shop owner Antonio receives a strange website order and gives his pizza boy, Brett the pizza delivery order. Only trouble is the delivery address is Mars!

Antonio insists it is crazy and does not believe the order. Brett reminds Antonio of his 'Distance no object' promise......

Can Brett deliver the pizza delivery order to Mars?

A bit of a U-turn, but I decided to make another game. Will only use the chairs/door screen above from the previous one...

Title obviously changed as well - due to the whole plot having changed. Title atm is "This is the Way" :)

It is about someone who has arrived, after an apparently long-winded journey, in front of the door, and wants to enter.

Time isn't the issue. The heat simply is enough that I'm achy and have no concentration even in the cooler parts of the day like now. Today's forecast is 107F/41.6C. And the forecast for the next 2 weeks doesn't have a single day even reasonably cool.

A dark allegory. You have invested  a lot, possibly everything, in getting here - and problems still arise. Even more troublesome is the insinuation: that you do not actually realize what it is you are going after...

Entrants can and are encouraged to vote. Whether you vote for yourself or an opponent is really a matter for you. I personally think it’s a bit unseemly to vote for oneself but it’s not against the rules. Then again, you could argue that if you genuinely think yours is the best, why do yourself a disservice? With any luck enough people will vote to give a true idea of the general consensus.

My thoughts on the two great entries:

Distance No Object by Slasher
Spoiler
Really creative application of the theme. Good variety of things to do. Not particularly challenging. Graphics somewhat basic. The strongest point of this game is the humour. I have to confess to laughing probably from when it started till I finished.

Really nice graphics and animation. As I commented on the game's page, the game felt quite repetitive after a few minutes and there was not a lot to do, so gameplay is not the strong point here. The game has merit in leaving the interpretation up to the player, with some interpretations presented on the game's page and others are up to the player to decide

My vote:

The games are so different that I used my usual tie-breaking approach: which game did I enjoy playing the most? Comparing these two would in a way be like comparing a Picasso to Looney Tunes. I went for the Looney Tunes :) Good job, Slasher

Here are my thoughts on the two entries.

Distance No Object by Slasher
Spoiler
The heart of this entry is yet another arcade sequence which I have no idea how was made. Slasher impresses by making the adventure game engine do things it's not designed for. The story is silly and funny and quite easy compared to the arcade bit, which I struggled with before I was successful. The game lacks some proofreading, but that didn't spoil any of my fun.

Spoiler
Short entry in the visual novel (visual short short story?) genre. There are literally three choices to make and three endings, so this is a quick play. The fun with this type of game lies perhaps more in discussing what the endings mean and what the symbols in the story mean than in actual gameplay. If one likes the Kafka story this is inspired by and derivations of it (which I do), then there is enjoyment to be had. If not, the story will probably leave you cold. I found the possible interpretations to be very open - this could be about death, madness, love, religion, commitment, living or any major choice in life. The best ending seems to be the one where you keep the dream alive and don't force an unveiling. The voice work is moody and well done, except the start of the dream (nightmare) ending, where i simply can't understand what you say.  ???

I voted for:

Distance No Object. I think This is the Way probably works better as a story than a game, while Slasher's entry is a game in all senses of the word. I also prefer laughing to being broody.

Distance No Object by Slasher
Spoiler
Slasher is very skilled at making hilarious games, which is what the doctor prescribed at the moment with all the bad news. I nearly gave up during the arcade part. It would have been nice to stop waves of bad guys once you reach Mars because it took me a while to figure out how to land.

This is the Way by KyriakosCH
Spoiler
The link to the theme is not obvious and it's more figurative than literal like Slasher's game. I like interactive stories and the voice set the tone right. Subtitles would have been useful because the voice is very soft and I had to turn the volume to the max to understand.

I hesitated a lot then voted for:
Spoiler
This is the Way. I hope this will encourage the author to write more games.

Looks like we have a winner.

Well done to Slasher for Distance No Object. You will be contacted shortly about picking a topic for September’s Jam.

Unlucky to KyriakosCH. I hope you’ll give it another go. And apologies for misspelling your name.

Thanks to both entrants and everyone who voted. Keep an eye out for the next Jam on [ideally] September 1st.

Why not start putting together a team now?
