Create a game featuring rain and/or snow as a mechanic, story point, or graphical element. Characters could be caught out in a storm, or they could be suffering from a drought and longing for some rainfall, or you could even play AS the falling snow in some fashion. As long as water falling from the sky in some way, shape, or form is important to the game, then it counts!

Use of existing graphics, music, and sound effects is allowed.

What is MAGS?
Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the guidelines set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules
Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualize your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days, and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

Remember that this is a challenge to see what you can do in a month, so any tinkering you do after that, including fixing minor glitches, is against the spirit of the competition. The exception to this is that you may go in and fix major, game-breaking bugs only during voting. We want you to have a game that voters can actually play and that runs on their machines.

So to reiterate, during the voting period fixing major, game-breaking bugs is okay, fixing minor glitches or making cosmetic changes is cheating.

Tips
Here are some ways to make sure you have a game to submit at the end of the month:
* Make a tiny game. Plan small, then cut it in half. Find shortcuts (e.g. if making walkcycles is time-consuming, make the characters static or have it in the first person).
* Plan to have your game playable and submittable with a week to spare. This way you have a week to fix bugs, add some flourishes and maybe even get someone to test it.
* Plan to submit it a day or so early. This way, if there are any technical issues with uploading, they can be sorted out in time.

Well,  I cant see any reason why I can't enter.... it keeps me out of mischief  (laugh)

I've had a think...I have decided on snow.... where is a cold place? There are plenty.... I've gone with the north pole.....I could use snow (and ice) as visual effects and a problem....

Maybe its a Station Base? There could be a heavy snow blizzard?  Maybe something is happening?  Perhaps they are stranded?

I find it exciting to have nothing and then build on ideas....

In my head I see the title:  "Ice Station Zero"....

I've written down some ideas....

It's just a running idea at the moment... I hope I have the time to complete it....

Come on guys, get involved and make your own game...  (nod)

Alas, this theme hasn't given me any ideas. Plus I have other things to do this month, like AdventureX in a couple of weeks. But if anyone does need help making a game, feel free to ask.

So far so good.....

Well, thing's are progressing well...

The storyline is finalized, the mechanics have been done.... Splash Intro has been created....

All good....

Ice Station Zero

"Ice Station Zero: an outpost at the north pole for US military to escape attack from enemy forces.
For five days the facility has been hit by snow blizzards of minus 60 degrees and gales up to 40 miles an hour.
Things seemed fine until the main generator failed and you are now on aux power but that won't last long.
The men are desperate. You won't survive for long on aux power if the main generator isn't fixed.
What's more, strange things have been happening: equipment is being taken and several of the team's husky's have gone missing! The last outpost team there vanished with a trace."

Game includes a body Warmth meter...

This is the first part of this game....

It doesn't look like our esteemed Texan is interested, and now a third of the month has gone by anyway. I'll just save it for a pitch contest some time down the line. If someone else wants to participate, but need an idea, drop me a PM.  ;)

Sorry. Most of the reactions to last month's submission has made me unsure if I'm even going to ever do Mags again. I might even be to the point of no longer making adventure games or using AGS any more. But I'm definitely to the point where I'm not going to try more than a month in a row. I do wish you luck in being able to use your idea in some way, though.

Why do it? I won't do MAGS more either. It's pointless if you've already tried it and failed (like i did). It's better to take the time it takes to make a game that you are proud off.
Don't give up on AGS or games just cause you can't finish anything good in a month.

Part of me still wants to create something that actually could win. And I'm not giving up on making games. I'm just not sure if it's adventure games that's my problem, AGS, Mags, or something else. I might end up trying Mags once or twice a year. And I might end up completely moving on to other game engines. All I can say for sure at this moment is that I can't do Mags again this month.

Who doesn't want to win something. I've done it before tho, not an MAGS win but something a lot bigger with hundreds of entries. Never forget that wonderful feeling :)
Maybe it's worth fighting for. I don't know. I think focus should just be on making a great game, doesn't matter what genre. I'm doing a completely different genre game in AGS atm.

Maybe that's your problem VW, you're going after a win. Just make a game you like the way you see it, forget about winning. Just have fun, and if it results in a win, the better. But do not it just "to win". Also, stop throwing your games out the window 2 days before the deadline and then expect to be able to put up a full long game.

Start small, and add to it, if you have the time, and above all, always have the game at a point where you can put a "The end!" or "To be continued...". Then decide if you want to continue working on the game and not deliver it, deliver it and continue working on it, or it's done and only bug fixes will be worked in.

If you notice, nobody else is trying to make MAGS every month (unless you're name is slasher).
I think 1 to 3 MAGS a year is a decent amount for the rest of us, mere mortals, IMHO.  ;)

You misunderstood what I meant by that. My problem is that I usually end up losing motivation, not that I'm trying to win. I have never actually tried to win. That's why I have to figure out if the problem is adventure games, AGS, or Mags.

I'm hard at work on an entry - just lost time because I tried to adapt an older MAGS attempt, keeping the GUIs and main character, deleting all the rooms/NPCs for a fresh plot. But somehow that kept breaking the code no matter how careful I was, so I'm rebuilding from scratch.

VW: I feel the same way all the time. Most months I start a MAGS idea, have a few good creative bursts, then can't make it work. Adventure is a weird genre...the classics are mostly "what wacky way can I use unlikely objects to solve puzzles", and it's hard thinking up fresh material there.

It's why I don't even share my idea or say anything until I'm halfway done, tired of embarrassing myself. Last one I actually finished was March!  But these days, I'm trying to remind myself, it took Lin Manuel Miranda six years to write Hamilton. I can be kind to myself for not finishing a whole creative project in a month.

And nothing wrong with swapping genres, engines, interests. I finally gave up on National Novel Writing Month after 14 years because I realized I just don't enjoy writing any more.  MAGS is a nice baby step towards building my creative confidence again through little, potentially finishable projects.

No matter what you choose, you'll be okay, and we support and understand your choices.

VW, keeping motivation is the hardest part to be honest. And can't help you with that very much, since I'm currently also out of motivation.
Ways that work for me: I've planned most of the story, dialogues, puzzles in my mind and I just want to share them with all of you. Or I'm working with someone else and then that's my motivation, to deliver my part no matter what.

Right now I'm working on scenario (BG) for this month, but since all I have is a just a vague idea, it might not end up becoming a game... this month anyway. At least I'm having fun building a 3D mansion.  (laugh)

Andreas, [offtopic]nice to see your music taste is good.[/offtopic] I don't agree that you "failed" in MAGS, however. You went a bit over the deadline, but delivered a nice game, and you started late, so it was done within a month of time. But to each their own. Just keep reading the MAGS threads, and suddenly the inspiration will hit you like a ton of Telefunken U-47s.

VW, you're great with art and animation. You seem to like the feel of jams and contests, perhaps not because of the competition so much as being given a theme and trying to make something out of that. For us lurkers it's very interesting to see different takes on a subject. That sense of a common goal can be very motivating in itself. Perhaps that is why you seldom release expanded versions of MAGS entries later on, despite having plans for further improvements? It may not be too inspiring to work on by oneself. If that is the case, you're in good company! But in a sense it's unfortunate that you don't get to show the full vision you had for the game(s), because more often than not, there is something there. I hope you stick around.

Heltenjon, Ofc! I've sidetracked pretty heavily now tho, and need to give that up  :-\.  It's fun sure, but it takes so much time and to get it right, is even harder then the Mags entry! Since it's a genre AGS wasn't intended to be used for (Fighting game). And yes, music taste, there's nothing wrong with. (laugh) For those who don't know HeltenJon catched up "who i am" (or at least sounds like it). Probably cause we've emailed before, but i'm "Olleh19". I've just changed to a more appropriate user name (my other social media's have similar names like AndreasBlack or Andreas J Black, just for laughs at our (Swedish iconic guitar-man Yngwie J Malmsteen. Notice i didn't say God.

I think God is something that needs to be worked on, and still deliver, that man is much more show now then actual good guitar playing, unfortunaly. Like Zlatan forexample. He is still a soccer (or football) god, imho. But anyway enough of the Off-topic. Looking forward to your games, guys. Especially Slashers, i hope Slasher got some inspiration from my entry in October with those lovely sounds while spelling out that intro. It really get's you in the Ice station mood(!).
Maybe your entries will inspire me to get on the right foot again with P&C game creation (laugh)

It's gonna be tight, but I think I can slap this all together in time.

It's called Not My First Apocalypse: Stormpuncher.

You are Roger Daniels, podcast host and friendly post-apocalyptic survivor. Your best friend is Beth - a psychotic, bomb-slinging toy bear brought to life.

Together you adventure through New Atrocity, a ruined zone of mutants and robots all out to mug, screw and kill you and anybody else in their way, ruled over by a mad despot called the Tyrant.

This time, the Tyrant has gone too far - jealous that a little girl is having a birthday party, he's unleashed a Weather Machine to storm out anyone who rains on his parade.

It's up to you and Beth to destroy the Machine and let the sun shine again.

I've been tinkering with the NMFA universe all year, as a coping mechanism for the pandemic. I just finished a template, and I think I'll try to set all future MAGS in it. It's a fun place to play.

(And in the spirit of apocalyptic buccaneering, all art is stolen and heavily modified.)

Btw, if anyone would like a simple full screen rain effect for their game - I've got After Effects, and worked out how to use its Rainfall effect to export a 24 frame PNG sequence with transparent alpha channels.

So if anyone wants, I can make one custom sized to your game.  I can also set it to blow at different slanted angles.

Then you assign the frames to a view, create a full-screen, non-clickable object in any room you want rain, set the object's view and start it NoBlock animating.

PM me if you're interested!

Hmmmm, seems I can no longer screen-capture AGS games running in fullscreen. I do the usual Function-PrintScreen keys but it only captures the desktop behind the running game image. Very annoying. Anyone know of a solution?

Meh, I just took a screenshot in windowed mode where we see our main character, the red stick-figure, waking up in their cabin in the woods to find themselves surrounded by an incoming horde of green zombies:

[imgzoom]https://i.imgur.com/CWe7zJE.png[/imgzoom]

Each level is procedurally-generated and "Cabin In The Woods" is the first. It looks quite different every time.

Hahaha! Yeah I am going a bit with the simplistic graphics this time as well to make sure I can get the gameplay done, but it is not a 5-hour rush-job like DaggerHell was.

More of an experience like the better and earlier Ultima games I hope.

Also, this one is turn-based, so no random daggers flying out of nowhere when you least expected it!

Meh, I just took a screenshot in windowed mode where we see our main character, the red stick-figure, waking up in their cabin in the woods to find themselves surrounded by an incoming horde of green zombies:

Each level is procedurally-generated and "Cabin In The Woods" is the first. It looks quite different every time.

You start out here, though, and there will be other characters you can meet and recruit along the way, and several character-classes hopefully.

Looks like so many games circa early 80s! One suggestion: to some players, there are 2 identical figures in the cabin. Maybe use something other than colour to distinguish the player from the enemy? This won't be a problem to many players but it will be for some...it's up to you if you want to alter the game to accommodate the minority.

I will probably be changing the zombie graphic a bit, yes, and also there will be a frame around the player character showing which one is currently being controlled to make it more obvious.

Edit 20/11/20: Base hut and few other bits now revised.

Ice Station Zero: an outpost at the north pole for US military to escape attack from enemy forces.
For five days the facility has been hit by snow blizzards of minus 60 degrees and gales up to 40 miles an hour.
Things seemed fine until the main generator failed and you are now on aux power, but that won't last long.
The men are desperate. You won't survive for long on aux power and the main generator must be fixed.
What's more, strange things have been happening: equipment is being taken and several of the teams husky's have gone missing!
The last outpost team there vanished without a trace.

The race against the cold snow to repair the main generator begins. You soon learn that the radio aerial has gone down and needs fixing so that Central Control can be informed of your situation.

During the course of the repairs a fellow team member is seen rushing into a snow cave. Something sinister may be happening and you intend to find out what it is!

Game includes a body Warmth meter...

Left Click: Interact
Right Click: Look
Blue X to disable active inventory

If anyone finds any bugs/issues please let me know and I will fix.. Thank you..

Mandle: Love the graphic style, takes me back to vintage gaming. :) Anyone remember ZZT?

With 12 days left, this is gonna be a scraper. I'm coding for hours every day at work, slapping together art at home, about 9 rooms left to go, but may have shot too big. I'll keep at it and fingers crossed!

Either way December's going to be a break for me...want to produce the voice packs for Lord of Light and NMFA: Stormpuncher. Maybe finish the NMFA game I tried to make back in April.

Anyways, good luck all!

Hey all. I have something in the works which I think will see the light of day by the end of the month...

Basically it's a rip off of I mean entirely unconnected to PanicBarn's 'Not tonight' which is itself entirely unconnected to the more famous 'Papers, Please'.  :X

Got some really basic sprites & background together and have coded about half the coding framework so far so hopefully looking good?

Jeez, coding a game that does not do any normal AGS stuff is hard, but, for me, a ton of fun and learning.

My game has no walkable areas, no objects, no characters, no inventory, no interactables, in the usual sense.

I gotta hard-code everything into the game, which just takes me back to when I was a kid hammering away at my C64 to produce what I could.

Little bit wiser now for game design than when I was back then. But not that better. I hope my C64-self from back then would have liked to have played this game.

Hey all!

I'm pretty well into a game, and I might be able to pull it off by the 30th.

I started it on the 15th. So, I won't feel too bad if I don't have it finished by next Monday.  :-D

It's ambitious, a little bonkers in scope, but mostly an experiment. I currently have 55 rooms with over 40 more to go, but that's mostly because I'm trying a few new techniques. The gameplay, while not completely foreign to AGS, is not typical of the classic Sierra/LucasArts game. It's still retro, but it's a first-person adventure. I won't say that it's like Mist, The 7th Guest or some other similar game. They're better. However, my plan is to approximate one of those games.

I'm cutting corners, but if I can effectively convey the story before the end of next weekend, I'll submit it in "The 11th Hour" ( ;) see what I did there?  you classic adventure enthusiasts...   (laugh))

Finishing the last room BG art today, then plugging in code like crazy!  I've been writing in a code editor app at work, then copy pasting at home. :)

Also worked out yesterday how to plug shortcuts for all my game-making folders and programs into Startup, so on boot everything I need just pops up.  This is the closest I will ever get to being Tony Stark.  :-D

Got a lot of work done today. It is hard creating a game outside of the usual conveniences that AGS provides. I have done it before, with The Rotary Club, Predators Prey For Plants, and others, but it takes a LOT of bashing my head against the engine to make it work. The positive points is that I grow to understand more and more how the engine operates with every bug I squish.

Closing in on completing the first level.

I got so tired of my own coding that I made an introduction menu screen and voice acted for it, and it even ties the game into the theme, which the game itself doesn't do yet.

Let's see if I can tie everything together tomorrow and have a playable game to enter into this MAGS.

Nice. I just signed-in to say, "I'm still in for MAGS, and will have something posted by the end of the day..."

...I'll still push to have it done, but...

...this will give me a chance to actually test it, (laugh) and maybe, just maybe, iron-out a wrinkle or two in the narrative.

Again: This game is a bit of an experiment. I'm just throwing in assets from here and there. The idea was arguably too much to have started on the 15th. It's going to lack the polish of a "second take revision." Plus, I've had to take a short-cut by making some videos to get the player more quickly to the end. Apologies for all of that...  :-\

Plus, I miss doing "Captain Disaster comedy;" this is more serious. I've had to bite my tongue, so to speak, when I've been tempted to throw in the self-referential gags. Myself as "the player," however, is making fun of this as I create each element.  (roll)

In all, thanks for MAGS. It has been good to be motivated to get back into AGS after a bit of a hiatus.

Super glad of the extension, after another 9 hours of coding today, still only finished the penultimate room. Not fun building an entire puzzle and then discovering hotspots and objects don't work how you thought, so you have to rebuild the entire thing as a GUI.

OK, I think I've done about as much bug squashing as I'm going to manage. Thanks for the extension, it has many less bugs now and a 'tutorial' type thing that seems to work OK.

Rain & Snow - The Bouncer

Based on everyone's favourite pub admit-em-up 'Not Tonight' you must man the door at one inexplicably popular and really badly drawn pub. I think they're so busy because of the absolute tunes being played every night, but you'll have to make up your own mind about that.

Can you sort the underage from the of-age, the fake photos, unstamped ID's and chancers of this world without issued tickets? Are they even on the guestlist? In the immortal words of the bouncer if "your name's not down, you're not coming in!".

Why can't you remember a time before the snow started falling?

The Cabin is a short, first person, point and click, mystery adventure. Why is this cabin here? Better yet, why are you here? Nothing seems right. Your memory is impaired. What's going on?

The Cabin is a proof-of-concept game created in 15 days for the November 2020 AGS monthly adventure game challenge.

Instructions:

  • Left click to interact and Right click to examine (examine all the things!)
  • W, A, D or Arrow Keys to move (forward, left and right)
  • F5 to save
  • F9 to restore
  • Control-Q to quit

(MAGS Notes: I ran out of time and energy to do sound effects - only finished the music.  There are a few minor issues - things that don't work as well as I'd like, puzzles that aren't 100% smooth.  But it should be playable, and I hope you enjoy it.  :-D )

In all seriousness, if you have time to play do let me know of any bugs. Also please do tell me if it's too easy or hard. I think I have a balance of sorts struck but... well...
I tried it briefly yesterday and didn't encounter any bugs. I don't think it's too easy, at least. I had to have multiple goes at level one and two and didn't beat level three in my first attempts before I had to call it a day.

The difficulty is influenced by one random event, and that is how long it takes before the patrons start to line up. If it takes 30 minutes + of in-game time before the first guest approaches, it will be a lot harder than if someone walks straight into the queue.

I repeatedly almost beat a level, which probably means the difficulty level is spot on. (And I think I know why I didn't beat the levels, too.) I'll come back with extended comments later.

Quote from: Shadow1000 on Thu 03/12/2020 02:48:48I got halfway through level 2 and it crashed. Something about a character not being in a room? I think I get the general idea of the game. How many levels are there?

Ah rats, I haven't seen one of those for days and thought I had ironed that problem out after I increased the NPC number to 60. >:( I'll have another look.

And 6 levels by the way. It's pretty easy to get the idea but it does get a lot more involved as you go through the levels. :)

Hmmm, the first character comes in after 3 minutes of in game time (3 seconds) and after that it's random, I think 2 - 5 seconds or something. Obviously if they come in from the right it takes longer to get into the queue so if you're unlucky enough to get the first few characters in from the right I suppose that could take a while. I'll have a think about ensuring you get one from the left quickly.

I found it quite hard to pitch the difficulty because obviously I have played it lots in repeatedly testing things, so maybe I'm better at it than I think! I was hoping the first level was fairly easy but perhaps not...

I haven't been feeling well the last 2 days (of course) so it's looking unlikely that I will finish mine. I will continue working on it however, but there's just not enough there to call it a "game" at the current time.

I am pleased though that my extension request did allow a lot of other people to finish there own so I don't feel too guilty. I will also be playing the other entries and rating/commenting on them as promised.

(If I wake up early tomorrow morning with a burst of new energy though, who knows!)

@TheBitPriest - only just downloaded it, but just to say I saw the message about needing to be run windowed and notice that you've moved the winsetup file so it can't easily be changed. Unfortunately it defaulted to fullscreen for me so I had to manually move the winsetup file back and tick that 'windowed' box. Not that much hassle, but assume you meant to set it to run windowed by default before moving the setup file.

Will play and proper comments later.

@Mandle - hope you're feeling better soon and the game gets to see the light of day at some point.  :)

Cheers! And, yeah, I can imagine a much better outcome for this one if I work on it a little here and there when the ideas come, rather than release a boring generic game and get discouraged from continuing on it.

Is it bug free? Well put it this way, I will guarantee a bug free playing experience if you refrain from performing any action which causes a bug when you play it!  ;)

Ah, I got the same bug as Shadow. It crashed twice (Edit: three times - I give up for now) for me in the second night (both times when I clicked the admit button, if this helps). Good to know you're already looking into this.

As for difficulty: The people are completely random, aren't they? I had one runthrough of the first day where I admitted three people and after that every single person for the rest of the night was someone I had to send away (at least 20 people), making it impossible to win.

Interesting game, though. I would like to get past the second night.  ;)

:-[ Sorry about that... I thought we straightened out the settings.

Sadly, the game's videos are touchy, and I didn't have enough time to work out a better solution.

There is a the_cabin_1_0_2.zip. This is the one that you want.

I moved winsetup.exe, because the very first thing one of my play-testers did was open it and change it to fullscreen, causing the game to freeze.  :-\  I put it back. Just know that the game will not work in fullscreen mode.

Yeah, they are random. It should be a 1 in 3 chance of a refusal for the first few levels so you must have been really unlucky. Lost count of the number of times I have played through and never had it that bad! I will do some re-jigging for v1.1 once i've hunted down that bug.

I always get unlucky in these kinds of games!  (laugh)

May I suggest a sanity check? Keep track of the last five or so people and if all were either supposed to be rejected or supposed to be admitted, then force the next to be the other possibility, ignoring the normal RNG.

Phew... It's uploaded.

The Cradle (https://drive.google.com/file/d/15WrAANOXudItOz8FTP7xiDq-YaiG4ASb/view?usp=sharing)

You are nobody.
It has given you a task.
The task is your purpose of existence.
Fulfill the task, or die miserably.

The game is more of a prototype, but it is playable through to the ending.
It was meant to be a mix of a survival and alchemy subgenres.

Main idea for the story and core mechanics, coding and supplementary graphics by Creamy, puzzles and the amazing background art by Julia, cheerleading supplementary coding and graphics by Kastchey.

Edit: I have done a very minor update - I realized that in a hurry, I forgot to disable a debug mode that cycles through the game stages super fast making it unplayable.
I've restored the normal game speed, no other changes have been made.

Why can't you remember a time before the snow started falling?

The Cabin is a short, first person, point and click, mystery adventure. Why is this cabin here? Better yet, why are you here? Nothing seems right. Your memory is impaired. What's going on?

Awesome game! I played for quite a long time and it's incredible how much detail there is in descriptions when right clicking. Graphics are incredibly immersive and the idea is intriguing. Hopefully you'll be able to get it working in fullscreen!

I probably played for about 40 minutes mostly looking for the satchel to no avail. I stopped when the game crashed when I right clicked the stepstool.

Thank you for the positive comments!

On the one hand I wish the bug you found hadn't existed (I guess none of us tried that), but on the other hand, I am glad that you mentioned it. It's been patched (the_cabin_1_0_3.zip)

"Finding the inventory" was a part of the experimental nature of the game. A risky idea, to be sure. One of the things that bothers me when I play point and click adventures is that I tend to just quickly fill my inventory in the first few minutes ("click and grab"). I thought, "What if finding the 'inventory' was the first challenge?" It may be too fiddly of an idea.

Parts of the the first puzzle are a bit fiddly, but there is more to the game than first meets the eye. I heard squeals of delight from some of our play testers, and I hope others will endure.

A comment on what you mentioned in your spoiler tag:
Spoiler

You were on the trail of finding the satchel by looking at the broken hook. The satchel was too heavy, and it broke the hook. The player mentions that there aren't that many other places to store things in the cabin. The satchel is in one of those locations.

OK v1.1 is up and running! http://www.mediafire.com/file/j95jv79dbuswcxs/Rain_%2526_Snow_-_The_Bouncer_1.11.7z/file (http://www.mediafire.com/file/j95jv79dbuswcxs/Rain_%2526_Snow_-_The_Bouncer_1.11.7z/file)

I've adjusted the difficulty and made sure that you can't be too unlucky.

I couldn't track down the exact source of the bug reported. I have re-worked one or two bits and have not been able to reproduce the bug in 10+ attempts so hoping all is fine.

If you play and get that bug again it would be really helpful if you could let me know when it happened and the circumstances as best you can. Perhaps I'm just being thick but I cannot trace the problem in the code or while playing the game to any one specific thing. In fact I can't reproduce the problem at all. Hoping that's a good thing!

Loving the Cabin, *really* well done!

Hint question:
Spoiler
Trying to split the log, just not sure where the "heavy enough" thing is to hit the wedge with.  I think I've picked up everything I can, tried the metal bar and broom handle.

And minor glitch found:
Spoiler
Heading onto the path, turn right, go forward, go forward...and then if you look left or right and turn front again, it jumps you back to the first "go forward" spot.  If you don't turn, you can proceed straight to the wolf just fine.

Well, about that...
It did feel easier and I managed to finish the game but for the last night I had one round were not a single person from the VIP list showed up... (as in, all people were not supposed to be there, not as in the queue stayed empty)

The game didn't crash on me anymore, but I encountered a second bug. In the last night, the VIP queue stopped moving:

It was stuck in this position, not moving forward. I can't tell you what happened, I was kind of busy checking IDs...

Anyway, a very well done game, despite the bugs. It's challenging, almost stressful, but also fun.
I didn't like the music at first, but surprisingly, it grew on me.  (nod)

But what a strange world these people live in, where you have to always wear the same clothes or you get rejected at the door.  (laugh)

Hey Guys,

I´m really late, but here is my entry. Its a mix of MAGS October and November (but at the end of last month I just had the walk cycle and two background sketches so I hope thats allright). I felt bad about the idea going to waste so I just adjusted it slightly to fit this month theme.

Some things don´t work yet (Save&Load button), but you should be able to play through. I will work on it some more tomorrow and do some last updates, but for now I need a break.

In the last version of "The Cradle", I made a mistake with the inventory that could make the game unwinnable. You can download a new version with only this fix HERE (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1M9h0zRa-cx9LLOmBe_-QNCowsjfCKZmh/view?usp=sharing).
The game is still in development. Hopefully we'll make a browser version playable on mobiles someday.

A rich harvest for the MAGS competition this month  :)

Wow, *fantastic* entries by everyone this month.  Huge applause to everyone for your hard work!

Reviews!

Ice Station Zero:
Spoiler
Very nice atmospheric piece.  You can really feel the cold and isolation in this one.  Puzzles aren't difficult, and really enjoyed the effective use of simple animations to bring the game to life.  The two-frame jumping animation of the generator running made me giggle, reminded me of early LucasArts. :)
[close]

Rain and Snow: The Bouncer:
Spoiler
Fun game, fast-paced focus and skill test.  Like Papers, Please for the Friday night drinking crowd. :)
[close]

The Cabin:
Spoiler
WOW.  Just wow.  Incredibly well done.  Impressed from the moment the intro started.  Loved the navigation system, reminded me of Myst.  I saw your comment about finding the inventory, and I agree, that was a unique and interesting dynamic for an adventure game.
[close]

The Cradle:
Spoiler
Another visually stunning entry.  Background, weather effects, character animations were gorgeous.  I'll admit I got lost on the puzzles and had to ask for hints - I guessed what I was supposed to do, fire, shelter, etc., but couldn't find the right combos of objects in the combination areas by random experimenting.  If the creative team had more time to enter guidance for the player, this game would be perfect.
[close]

The Cat Case:
Spoiler
Absolutely adorable art on this one.  Love the backgrounds, the characters, little touches like the "feather bed" made me laugh.  Needs some cleaning up on dialogue punctuation, and walkable areas sometimes walked right over spots like the crime scene, or up onto walls/room objects, but just a minor issue.  Enjoyable, cute game, I'd love to see more in this universe.

Some really good entries this month. A real success!

My comments:

Ice Station Zero by slasher
Spoiler
Graphics and animations are really improving! Great application of the theme. Good puzzles - I got stumped twice but got through with some persistence. Good job
[close]

Rain & Snow - The Bouncer by Intense Degree
Spoiler
Cool and original game idea. Intricate gameplay. Application of the theme is a bit weak. Not an adventure game but more of a "pay close attention and act fast game". Having multiple levels where the challenge and gameplay changes is a great touch
[close]

The Cabin by TheBitPriest
Spoiler
Absolutely outstanding in all aspects. Even for a full release, the graphics, integration of video, sound for just about everything vivid descriptions for everything and any area of immersive polish scores an A+. The idea behind the game and the way things unfold as you solve puzzles that are of the just-right difficulty level makes the gameplay consistently compelling. The fact that there is such a brilliant backstory and the way it's presented just takes this entry over the top. Of course making snow the central element of the game gets another A in terms of applying the theme of the competition
[close]

Not My First Apocalypse: Stormpuncher by PlayPretend
Spoiler
Enjoyable and constant laughs from beginning to end. I LOVE how this game lampoons all the zaniness of today's world from like-addicts to fake news to selfie-addicts and much, much more that one would not believe if it weren't true. The puzzles are top notch and solvable. What AMAZES me is how brilliantly zany the game is with solid, logical puzzles. I actually was worried that the world is just so bizarre that I wouldn't be able to do the puzzles but every time I faced a challenge, something just "clicked" and I had a huge smile as I figured it out. EXTREMELY well done. The rain was central to the game, making it fit perfectly into the competition
[close]

The Cradle by Creamy, Kastchey and Julia
Spoiler
Stunning, professional-grade graphics and animation. Even the opening screen was breathtaking. The interface looks like many popular games and is very inviting. After about 90 seconds of play I got a black screen with scrolling poetry that implies that the game was over. I tried 4 more times, with each time lasting about the same amount of time and slowly discovering what I'm supposed to do but after that I reread the release post and the Question mark explanation in-game and still realized that I had no idea how to play and starting over for another 90 second go at it just didn't appeal to me. Maybe if it were released with documentation it would be a great game?
[close]

The Cat Case by Racoon
Spoiler
Adorable! I love the mouse-detective puzzle solving! Solid and logical puzzles. SWEET and meaningful story. I loved the graphics. I would have someone proofread the text as some of it was unclear to me as to what was intended. As well, I know that part of the graphics is to show the small scale of the mice compared to the backgrounds but I probably would have the mice take up a bit more of the proportion of the screen. Overall, a very pleasant experience.

I actually got stuck at the end and solved it by spinning the wheels till I got the right combo. I am wondering how the door to the desk puzzle is supposed to be solved? I got the clues about the mayor and the competition in the newspaper but I don't see ANY connection to the wheels with the coloured segments (unless the hint was something else that I missed)

Overall, a very pleasant experience
[close]

My vote easily goes to:

Spoiler
The Cabin. I sent a few nit-picks to BitPriest but aside from that, this game is definitely among the best MAGS entries I've played. Every area from the graphics to puzzles the the plot is nothing less than superb. It all comes together to a memorable experience. All I can say is HOW did you do it in less than a month?
[close]

Holy cow... and congratulations.

A bug report for Rain & Snow - The Bouncer (which I'm enjoying a lot btw, I loved Papers, Please!):
Spoiler
An error has occurred. Please contact the game author for support, as this is likely to be a scripting error and not a bug in AGS.
(ACI version 3.5.0.24)

in "GlobalScript.asc", line 593
from "GlobalScript.asc", line 618
from "GlobalScript.asc", line 1276

Error: MoveCharacter: character not in current room

This happened when I was trying to admit a 9th person in the 2nd stage whose ID was fine, if that is of any significance.

Full snapshot of the game screen when the error occurred here: https://i.ibb.co/mSmmxhx/bouncer.png

A bug report for Rain & Snow - The Bouncer

Firstly, thank you so much for this, it really helped track the problem. So I have tidied up the function in question and I am assuming all is good but I have still not been able to reproduce this bug in the first place - before the fix! So if anyone comes across it again please do let me know.

Download links updated, or click here http://www.mediafire.com/file/j95jv79dbuswcxs/Rain_%2526_Snow_-_The_Bouncer_1.11.7z/file (http://www.mediafire.com/file/j95jv79dbuswcxs/Rain_%2526_Snow_-_The_Bouncer_1.11.7z/file)

I have been pretty busy recently, but have started to play the other games here. Not done with them yet but I have to say that so far the standard has been absolutely breathtaking. What a MAGS!

One more possible bug with The Bouncer: at the beginning of level 5 (I think), the first person on the right hand side queued near the end of the line instead of the beginning and would not change tint. I could summon the ID checking interface when I clicked her and after she was through, the next person in the queue stepped forward and changed tint as he should.

Screenshot below:
https://i.ibb.co/G2fK7T3/bouncer2.png

The perpetrator is the fair haired lass in a green dress :)

Edit: Actually, 6. Level 6.

Ah, this looks like the same thing Sinitrena found before and I think I may now understand it. Looks like the ladies in question might have just slipped off the walkable area, which I guess happened when characters passed each other. If 2 had arrived for the queue at more or less the same time and one had been rejected and met them coming the other way one of them may have been nudged too low...

No time to look now, but I might try a cheeky and carefully placed eAnywhere for the relevant walk commands later on.

I've left comments on each game page so I won't repeat here because I'm lazy

I voted for
Spoiler
The Cabin because it's great game that also fits the theme very well. It must be one of the longest MAGS game I've ever played.

I loved all the other games too. We've really been spoiled this month.
Thank you to all the game developers who entertain us every month! Merry Christmas!

Finally, I got the time to play all the entries. (Unfortunately too late to voice a robot. Maybe next time.)

The Cat Case:
Spoiler
Great setting! I liked that the characters were fleshed a bit more out than what was needed for the game. This gave an impression of a larger world, one I’d happily revisit. The notebook mechanic was used very well, and the puzzles were just right, not too difficult for a casual game experience. Some small bugs and spelling errors didn’t detract any for this player.
[close]

Storm Puncher:
Spoiler
I really hope we get to see more from this world. The humour is top notch, with nods to Sam & Max and all the robot gags you could think of. Long game with lots to do and funny responses for most of the thing you can’t.
[close]

The Cabin:
Spoiler
Wow, that was excellent! I had an idea about where I was half-way through, and I was right. Brilliant 3d execution and very good puzzles. Very good story, too, and the atmosphere really sucked me in.
[close]

Rain & Snow - The Bouncer:
Spoiler
This one stretches the theme a bit, but anything to get more games.  :-D I wasn't too good at this, admittedly. I haven't played the games you cite as inspirations, and I don't think I need to. I have enough of a challenge here. Very playable in a just-one-more-go manner. I've kept the old version as well, to see if I can beat it at that difficulty eventually.
[close]

Ice Station Zero:
Spoiler
I'm a huge The Thing fan, and I found the game reminded me about that setting. My hunch about the pre-announced twist was wrong:
Spoiler
I thought you had set it on the North Pole in order for Santa to turn up, sabotaging the lair of the unwanted neighbour. The first The Thing movie was set in the north, and John Carpenter's in the south. It makes more sense to have a base on the South Pole, on solid ground, so I guessed you chose the north to make way for a Father Christmas appearance.
[close]
The game uses several ideas from Slasher's entries the last months, which isn't a bad thing at all. I really liked the way Brodie examines technical equipment and comes up with what needs to be done. But the people need to wear proper winter gear, not the Hollywood stuff, going out in a blizzard with nothing on your head.  (laugh) Solid entry.
[close]

The Cradle:
Spoiler
Arguably even more stunning visually than The Cabin. The idea is very good, but I would have liked some more indications that the player is doing something right. I like to play alchemy games, but without feedback, I felt that part was too difficult. I really liked how the weather got progressively worse, ending up with the player swimming around instead of walking.
[close]

I voted for:
Spoiler
The Cabin. But I think all the games this month are spectacular!

Some great games... Some very short, some need a few tweaks and some are very good.

Difficult to decide on various merits... but each entry has its own charm...

After deliberation and digesting I went for:

Spoiler
The Cabin. Stood out by a nose....

Well done to TheBitPriest for The Cabin. You are the official winner of MAGS November by quite a margin. You’ll be contacted soon about choosing a topic for January’s theme.

Thanks to all who entered and voted.
12 votes ain’t bad. If only half of those people were to go and rate the games in the database, (which was the condition for granting the extension), we might start seeing some orange cups.  (nod)

Thank you, all.

I'm embarrassed to win during a month of such stellar participation. Each entry was superb, and I think they are all winners. My comments are on the game pages.

I was tempted to not make a pick (I couldn't decide), but I finally voted for:

Spoiler

The Cat Case

All of the entries had merit. So well done! However, I really liked every aspect of this game: look, story, world-building, and mechanic. Please keep working on it!

I wanted to get back into AGS and do a MAGS (I haven't touched AGS since working on DHAMSB). I was thinking about the theme of snow, playing around with the idea of something that would have been a lot like Ice Station Zero, but then the idea hit me. I think I watch too many movies/shows that are like this game.  (laugh)

There are many things about The Cabin that were experimental. I wanted to see if I could use WSL to make a solid workflow that would iron out a few sore spots of AGS development. Also, I wanted to see if, by using real time and real time scripting, I could approximate the FPP Adventures that were popular from ~1998-2008. I'll start a post somewhere on the boards to give all the details of the experiment another time. I'll also post the backstory either in a spoiler tag, or as a recorded "Interview" with the protagonist when I get around to voicing the game.

Congrats TheBitPriest

My reviews:

Ice Station Zero by slasher
Spoiler
A good Slasher's vintage. The drops of temperature can be very sudden but they're not too taxing. The game is quite long and the suspense builds adequately. The stealth part was "meh" since I was trying to find the path intended by the developer rather than actually avoiding the bears. I can't really blame you since I did something similar in another game (laugh)
[close]

Rain & Snow - The Bouncer by Intense Degree
Spoiler
Nicely done. I stopped when I had to check the names on the VIP list because it started to feel too much like real work. It felt so believable that I wonder if it was created from experience.
The connection with the theme is tenuous though.
[close]

The Cabin by TheBitPriest
Spoiler
Great achievement under the time constraints. I had to use the hint section for a couple of parts verging on pixel hunt (finding the bag, the iron bar...) but it was fine overall. I wish I could turn my head as in other FPS adventure games. Nice silly little twist at the end.
[close]

Not My First Apocalypse: Stormpuncher by PlayPretend
Spoiler
Another beast of a MAGS game. The challenge was quite low but a major effort was made on the staging and the dialogs.  It was funny and I enjoyed carrying so many living things in my inventory, like in your previous game.
Strange use of a herringbone brush in nearly every background.
Dead end: if you leave the alley without picking up the tentacles, they disappear.

The Cat Case by Racoon
Spoiler
The puzzles were fair and the story was OK.
It's visually charming and I like the small scale of the scenery.
