Title: New AGS logo

The current logo has a glow which looks nice on a white or light blue background, but it looks off in dark mode (see https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?status=signed-in&theme=dark (https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?status=signed-in&theme=dark)).

So I gave it a quick go. I thought about tracing the current logo as vector but I was lazy and instead used the font that is currently used for the design of the new page (Nunito from Google fonts). The new logo should somehow fit the colors and style of the new website (https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ (https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/))

I know the kerning and spacing between letters is off, this is mostly to give you an idea.
I will not be able to work on this in the next few days, this thread is supposed to be a kickstarter for logo ideas. I hope people will come up with much better ideas and we find a new logo everyone is happy with. The pic is an svg, so it should be easy for you to modify it.

Post by: cat on 20 Jun 2022, 08:12: Thanks, but as I said spacing is still off. I also wonder if it is maybe too professional and clean and should be more "fun"? On the other hand, the Unity logo for example uses an even plainer font and just the icon standing out more. Maybe we can add a better cup in front of the text? At the moment, it is just a rectangle with a handle.

I'd love to see what logos and ideas other people come up with.

Very nice one, LimpingFish! I like the concept and the small caps, but I'm not too fond of the shape of the cup. What font did you use?

Edit: Okay, I gave it another go:

Cup with blue fill, fixed spacing between characters, fixed the "G" a bit, squeezed the font to make it look less balloony. I'm not sure on the squeeze, though. It might look too... well, squeezed now.

The font is Calibri Bold (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/font-list/calibri), which is a font that comes with Windows.

The cup is a tea-cup, as opposed to a mug, because I though it would be funny to finally see a cup take center stage (I have vague recollections of a thread about how the graphic of the blue cup within AGS is actually intended to be a tea-cup!), but I'm not too keen on how it turned out myself.

I think it's a lot better than the mugs in most other proposals, which IMO have the wrong proportions. (I'm not just thinking of your design here, cat, but others that have been proposed over the years.) But the AGS community seems hopelessly split between those who favor a coffee cup-like design and those who think the logo should be more like a mug.

Post by: cat on 21 Jun 2022, 21:57: Don't get me wrong, I totally like the placement of the cup. What doesn't work for me is the bottom of the cup. The small dent that is caused by the rim at the bottom of the cup looks off when you see just the outline. Maybe just changing the bottom to be more round would be enough?

OT: I like to drink tea from cups like the one in my logo and coffee from espresso cups that look more like the one in LimpingFish's logo ;)

Edit: One concern that comes up: Would highlighting the first two letters with the cup make people think of ads? Maybe the cup should only highlight the first "A"?

@eri0o: So many creative ideas! Please keep in mind that the logo should work in light and dark mode and also a light blue (afaik #DEEDFF).

Berlin Sans FB Demi Bold. Can be found in paid version of Microsoft Office.

@zabnat: I like your cups, they are a great middle ground between my and LimpingFish's cups. They also give me an idea of a combination with one of the previous AGS logos.

I'll admit it's not the best model of a teacup (at least of one that looks like the "classic" AGS cup), but it was free and Photoshop's 3D capabilities handle it well.

I think that might be just you (laugh) I instantly saw a tea bag. This is actually my preferred take on the logo. Looks like we're finally moving out of 90s internet era graphics!

And I *REALLY* love the cups in Erioo's post and Limping Fish's post (further down). The cup handles are actually on the correct side, ready to be picked up. :cheesy:
It's always frustrated me a lot, seeing the cup handle on the wrong side.

Btw, everyone feel free to modify my logos. That's why I uploaded the svg, so it's easy to change. If you need a free vector editing tool, try Inkscape, that's what I use.

Post by: eri0o on 23 Jun 2022, 18:19: Yeah, it's fine to have the SVG file as is, but I would suggest using an exported png to show directly in the forums, just avoid the font being different because the system font is different (iPhone, Android, Windows, ...)

Post by: cat on 23 Jun 2022, 20:21: You should convert the text to paths. This way, it does not have to include the font, because all that is left of the text is vectors in the shape of the letters. The benefits over png: It's resizable without loss and others can still use/edit parts of it (for example, I only adjusted character spacing after converting the letters to paths). It might be a good idea to keep the original with the text somewhere so you can easily change the font etc.

@abstauber, that traced cup is really cool. I wonder if we can have a little arm but it cuts off and has a little bone at the end instead of the rest of Larry, like if some adventure death scene has gotten the rest of him. :-D

LimpingFish's cup shape is good! I also like abstauber's cups (the ones without Larry Vales) in the last version, although I'm not too fond of the font.

I like the version with three cups. It is a bit silly, but I like it because of that. It gives the logo some personality that these flat designs often don't have.

And of course we can discuss outline fill, handle orientation and stuff like that, but I would like to decide on the general concept first.

This is 2.5. I tried that one because that font awesome cup is used throughout the website (e.g. in the awards) and I thought it would be a nice consistency.

Ideally we'd then have an SVG version of whichever cup ends up in the logo, so we could then use this throughout the site.

Looking at the logos now, having 2.4 in the outline colours of 2.2 would also have been nice.

No matter which logo gets most votes in the end, we should definitely optimise it regarding stroke width, colour, spacing and so on for light and dark mode.
