Announcing Underwater Adventures

Hi agser's. This game has been in production for some time and now it's first chapter (about one third) of the game is complete.

Edit:
Demo of first chapter complete.

This reminds me of "Sharkey and George" and "Sponge Bob Square Pants". Not sure why.

Looks good through.

I was hoping to put the demo out this weekend. Looks like next weekend is more realistic since it's taking me a while longer than expected to get the neccessary art done. It will get done. I want to get at least one puzzle finished. (unless people don't mind a tiny 3 room demo <see scrnshots above> without an intro)

Just realised, it's a pretty clever move doing a game in this setting - don't have to bother with painstakingly creating walk animations, as the characters are fish!

The game looks a lot of fun, and I always enjoyed the Sharkey And George idea of talking animals under the sea. Also my favourite Disney character was Sebastian The Crab so in my mind this kind of game has a lot going for it.

Also the verb coin interface is super, simple but effective, and not too limiting in options. Good stuff.

And don't be disheartened by some of the graphics that you see in other AGS games, I think what you've come up with so far looks pretty good. As long as the game's art doesn't seem lazily put-together, and you can tell what stuff's meant to be, I think a game can be playable. Although I would probably fill out the private eye's office with more stuff, or make the room smaller, tighter together (black outlines around the edge of the house?) - there's lots of empty space in it. But anyway this isn't Critics' Lounge.

Looking forward to the demo.

Yeah, like Gonzo said, don't worry about your graphics, man. From what you've shown, I think it's great...it's a nice style that fits your game. This game sounds fun, the underwater part is what grabbed my attention. I looked at this thread before, just forgot to post in it ;)

Keep up the good work and I hope you finish this!

As promised, a demo by the weekend. But a very preliminary demo. Only few locations, with some locations needing retouching. Characters are fairly complete.

I will be updating a lot on weekends until finished.

music from Trapezoid and Synthetique's font.

Hopefully people will like it. :)

I gave it a try and it looks great so far!

There's just one really big problem with changing rooms. For example I had to quit the game just because I couldn't get out of the "outside Sam's"-screen, even though I clicked everywhere. Well, maybe it's just me, but still for dumb players like me you should show more obviously from where you can leave the screen. Or then you just have set a little too small areas for leaving the screen.

I liked the enviroment and atmosphere in general. You seem to have the skills writing good dialogue, just be careful not to over-do them. I'm really looking forward to this game.

Filet O'Fish! Hilarious! :)

Awesome!   ;D

I've loved it from the word go. I reckon the graphics are great too, I think simplicity and neatness are the key to good looking graphics, even if you don't consider yourself a great artist.

I have similar drawing style to yours (I don't know if you've had a look at Nick it & Run, but if you do you'll probably understand what I mean).

The music and fonts also help recreate that sort of wacky atmosphere of the best adventure games.

Boy, I'm looking forward to the end product...

P.S. Just a small thing with the game is that I personally don't like that Curse of MI-type interface, but that's just personal preference...  ;)

actually, the player character has a mohawk haircut, but you cannot see it under the hat.  ;)

also the addition of the player's evil pet jellyfish will make for some interesting puzzles.

*new* also fixed the verb-coin to new smaller size.

thanks for the comments, guys. Progress is fairly steady, hope to complete by end of July.

It's July and not even 25% yet. More rooms and art than i expected. Still pushing...

Sorry for the bump. Progress started again after recovering from some issues in personal life.

Here's the shameless plug.

As you can see some of the graphics have been updated.

I promised it would be done by end of July, what a liar I was to myself.

Well, working hard on some bgs and gfx to get at least a whole fulfilling puzzle done. Don't forget the game is using verb-coin (CMI) interface, otherwise it may seem like all the player can do is walk around.  :P

I played the previous update and liked it.
I stopped though because I reached a stage at which I couldn't tell whether anything else was finished yet (and I can't be bothered with 'try everything just in case' scenarios).
But when there's a clear objective I'll be all over it again.

Great concept and game.. the characters are very funny and work well together.

I must point out that I couldn't believe my eyes about the character design. Every single one has a strong personality and is very well drawn. It takes talent to be able to make something like that so easily.

I loved the fish with the hangover in the bar.. brilliant drawing.

very well done.

Thanks, guys.

As always, it's the feedback that keep us going through the tough times.
Makes it feel fresh.  8)

comments always welcome.

Great game! I really liked the music!

Here's a few suggestions:

- The verb coin should be bigger and underwater-themed. Maybe like a big clam or something. Right know it looks like the use icon is a *hand*!

- You did a pretty good job of giving all the hotspots interactions, but you missed a few, like the Sam's sign.

- On the map screen, you should just have to left-click on a location to go there, instead of bringing up the verb coin.

- Sometimes, you have to use an open doorway to enter a room. Other itmes you just have to walk to it. Whichever way you choose, it should be consistent throughout the game. Also, to enter your house, you must use the door to open it, then use it again to enter the room. Seems odd.

- When you barter for "tickets" you only get one ticket (hence "admit one"). When you trade this ticket, the recipient says something like "Oh, boy! Tickets!". But maybe I'm nitpicking.

Anyways, best AGS game I've played in a while.

I like this a lot. It's a very unique concept and the comments made by jellyfish made me really laugh. I wish you good luck for the rest of the game  :D

Thanks guys.  8) I'm happy you guys liked it.
Your comments and suggestions are always welcome.

big bro:
I will try to fix those inconsistensies. (<-spelling?)
The coin being a clam (or something underwater theme) is a very good idea. I was also going to add in some anims to the chars that havent made it yet.
Left clicking on main map isntead of using coin is good idea too. I'll see what I can do.
I will add something for the Sam's sign - good catching that one.

Again thanks for your inputs and the good luck.
They are always welcome and it gives me an idea of how to make improvements. (to be seen next chapter)

edit:
a majority of the in game music is by trapezoid.

ps: if puzzles seem too easy I will try to make it with higher difficulty next chapters, but its hard to get you guys stuck.  ;)

 :D

Very nice work!!! The stile and the idea are really cool... keep up I'd like to play the whole thing soon!

found only a small bug/strangething
Spoiler
when you go to the doctor study you can call him even if the secretary says you cannot enter. As soon as you call him he walks(swims) near to you then the secretary stops you and the doctor doesn't walk back to the chair with the shark and starts the working animation near the door
[close]

ps: could you make the coin interface a bit bigger?!?
Title: Re:Underwater Adventures (chapter 1 complete)
Post by: evilspacefart on Sat 29/11/2003 09:48:59
Thanks for the bug catch!  ;D
Fixed it. Redownload.

Spoiler
the doctor now comes to you, but returns when the receptionist stops you. There is also some comedic (IMHO) dialogue between player, jelly and receptionist.
[close]

edit:
- Added the interaction for the Sam's sign.
- on Map screen, left click takes you to location, right click looks at description.

as for the interface, it may take longer to make bigger as it requires making some new graphics and redoing some gui stuff.

Ooh, good.
The dialogue and other extras was entertaining, and not excessive.

I thought the difficulty level was okay.
The fact that one can understand the problem and think about what is needed is far better than being totally stuck because the only clue is some item that you don't even know exists.
Don't make them harder, just make more of them  ;D
