Title: MAGS - JUNE
Post by: magintz on Sun 01/06/2003 11:46:55
With many congratulations to Mikko, the winner of last month's competition, it was a very enjoyable and comical game. If you havn't played it yet check out the Completed Games Forum.

Well i'm hoping this month will get more people. This month's prize is probably going to be better than any other as you will get to choose July's rules, which is when Mittens is being held; so if you want you could choose rules for a themed MAGS like last year with the spooky Granny Zombiekiller's Murder Mystery!

The rules for June though are going to be simple, as it's getting warm as we enter the summer months.

Along with sun, summer also brings spectacular films, like the much awaited Matrix 2, and many more. The idea of this month's MAGS competition is to turn a film of your choice into an adventure game, as most the films nowadays are turned into action, or shoot/beat - em-ups.

After discussing these rules with Jannar we were struck by the problem of copyright infringement, this made us sit down and think in out virtual chair of thought. Last month we tried the parody idea which did not have such a good turn-out, but we feel that if a parody could be made around your favourite film, this should avoid copyright infringement.

Some ideas to help you think:
- The slightly mauve mile - a prison story with Ron Banks
- The see-saw redembtion - A one man struggle to break free from the see-saw
- The Perm-anator - Astalavista hairdo!

If you do not wish to do a parody perhaps you could:
- Have a quest that the movie didn't show.
- Show what happened after the movie ended.

As they are only going to be short one month games maybe it won't be an issue, but make sure you include full original credits to the film creators.

There are no restrictions on how long the game is, or anything you must include.

If you are persuaded not to enter by your graphical talents - we don't care, what you lack in artistic ability make up in plot and storyline. If you cant make any story line or puzzles - draw some fancy backgrounds.
If you can't draw or make up a plot then enter anyway for our enjoyment, if you joined AGS to make a game, MAGS is a brilliant way to start. WE ARE ADVENTURE GAME FANS NOT CRITICS!

And remember the number one rule for MAGS - ENJOY YOURSELF!

There are no restrictions in length, puzzles, items etc... just have fun and enjoy the summer!

Hmm... if we have the film on dvd, would we be allowed to rip backgrounds? And what about the music? I could live without the backgrounds but being allowed to use the exact music (with appropriate credits, of course) would help a lot. Of course, I could use midis... but I couldn't guarantee that I could find ones for the film I have in mind.

Hmmm...not sure what I will do...but, I think I will give it a try this month. I've never done the whole MAGS thing...

Archangel - Yes you can rip backrounds and midis but must state original source somewhere if you want to avoid copyright.

How do we go about doing this? I've never done one before. Are there any rules for submission or anything. Do I just start a "Game in Production" Thread(once I have a few rooms)? Or is it just free-form-what-the-hell-ever? Do I need to announce what I've decided to do?

All you have to do is post a reply in this thread saying that you're going to make a game, then just go and do it. People don't usually bother with Games in Production threads for MAGS games.

GorgonJim - If thats what you want to do

I've decided to do a MAGS game myself, but i'm not going to enter, I think these rules sound fun, and will make me keep up with my scripting cause Tier doesn't want to do my backgrounds for Zero Hero, so i cannot do a thing till he does them, but he is too lazy.

Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: Klaus on Tue 03/06/2003 14:56:07
This MAGS competition has just started but with likely more than one participant now here's a question about the voting:

As you might have noticed the new MAGS website (http://www.mags-competition.tk) also offers an online voting system. It uses a temporary IP lock, can show the current vote results or hide them (of course it's nice to see directly who's about to win, but it's also nice to be surprised by the ceremonies). For all who want to check the online voting system I set up a demo (results visible) based on the competition 2003-02: You find a link to it at the bottom of the voting section.

I don't know if the MAGS teams wants to stick to the usual e-mail voting or wants to use this website feature... So what do you think about using the online system?
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: Bob The Hun on Tue 03/06/2003 23:43:50
I'm thinking that i might just enter this one, assuming that i can think of a movie.
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: Duzz on Wed 04/06/2003 02:05:40
how 'bout doing the film 'sleep' by andy warhol...
I really wan't to enter this one, but I have uni exams starting next week =(
But that means I get next month off, so I may enter then =)

btw, The voting system is great, but you shouldn't be able to see the results before you vote, cause It'll influence peoples decisions...  I always go for the underdog ('cause I'm aussie i guess)
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: magintz on Wed 04/06/2003 09:13:19
I agree with Duzz; the results should NOT be able to be seen and should be a suprise. I really like everything you've done with the site, and the voting system is great.
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: aussie on Wed 04/06/2003 09:23:48
I prefer to see who is about to win...
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: Timosity on Wed 04/06/2003 12:05:46
I think it's a bit silly to be able to see who's winning cause it will persuade people to vote a certain way, which will change the result completely.

Surprise is a must
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: Squinky on Wed 04/06/2003 12:17:21
Yep, It would be goofy to see the results...
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: Klaus on Wed 04/06/2003 15:12:40
Well, if it's a problem for you to see the current results before submitting your vote, it is also possible to set up the system so that it only shows the results after your made your decision. I switched the settings of the demo over to this option now. You can have a new look at it if you want to (IP lock is reset)...

To keep the votes hidden and make the results visible one or two days after the voting period's end is probably the way to go, right? So you can be surprised by a ceremonies trailer and you finally can see if your favourite game ever had a chance to win the competition  :)

QuoteI've also started. My game is a bit of a mixture between Casablanca...
Damn, I was going to do a Casablanca game...
Grim Fandango's already covered it in a parody kinda way too.... ^_^
But they never made a sequel to the original movie, so I might do something set after, or before...
Or I might do some sorta parody of 'Igby Goes Down', I don't know...

I wanted to start the AGTV thing, but nobody seems to have a game near completion...Also loads of people are entering this already..I might give it a shot, I don't know..

Oh, I don't get a free win this time? ;)

Anyway, after couple of days thinking, twiddling thumbs and making extensive Google-work, I've decided to look around and see if I'm going to get anything released.

I'm making a game based on the Carol Reed's classic "The Third Man".

If I'm not getting it in the way I want then there will be no game. I really want to do something worth showing as we're speaking of interferring one of the greatest films ever made.

I have the general plot ready, so now it's mainly spriting for next week. Here's a very preliminary scene with one of the characters:

A question..
I couldn't think of anything to do, so I started looking around in the video cabinet, and i think I might have a topic. Can I do one on Veggietales?
Theres a few full-length movies (and the videos are kinda short movies).
Just wanted to make sure I'm following the rules before i get started.
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: Eggie on Thu 05/06/2003 18:49:39
Can I do Lord of the Rings?

I know it wasn't origianally a movie but it's the easiest thing to make a light spoff on ever.

Plus, I haven't read the books so I could only really parody the movie...
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE

bob and eggie - yes you can
Title: Re:MAGS - JUNE
Post by: |Alky| on Sat 07/06/2003 14:32:16
Okay, sorry, I've got more questions..
Does it have to based around a particular movie, or can it be a genre? I wanted to do a sorta tribute to realism movies like Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, The Great Escape and Kelly's Heroes, but using really simple graphics...
I wanted to create an original story, but based heavily around the others. Even the graphics style is a spoof...
I'd also like to borrow from other films, like vietnam era ones...will that idea be allowed?

Art Style....(I found this while searching for something for photoshop friday, and if the artist dosen't reply negatively to my e-mail I'll use this as the main title thing...)

Post by: magintz on Sun 08/06/2003 14:28:03
Sorry, I have to draw the line somewhere, and you have to base it round one film, either a parody of or an extension of the film.

Is it okay to make a game that have a story of a time before the movie's actual story but with the same lead character or characters and places? I'm working with my entry, Monsters Inc, which will take part about a month before the actual story of Monsters Inc movie but it's still Sulley, Mike, Randall, Waternoose and the other monsters, plus it's the same factory. I hope that will be ok?

I just released my MAGS June entry:

;D CASABLANCA, THE DAY AFTER  ;D

The game is based on Warner Bros 1942 classic. You play Mick. It's the day after Ilsa and Lazslo managed to escape Casablanca. You know you did the right thing by letting them go. However, you are not very happy about it. To top things off, Sam won't stop playing that stupid "As time goes by" song. Your goal in this game is to use ANY means to stop him doing so. This game is re-playable, as there are at least four different combined paths leading to its completion.

The game features:

- Stunning noir hi-colour graphics!
- Two puzzles combining up to... FOUR  :o :o :o paths to complete the tragedy--- er... the game!!!
- Your favourite Nick it & Run characters!
- Some lame jokes!
- Action scenes!
- Unnecessary and potentially offensive violence!
- A classic soundtrack!
- The missing link between Casablanca and Nick it & Run!!!
- and more...

A walkthru' is included in the readme file.

Download this pearl at:

Title: MAGS - JUNE - The Faketrix
Post by: Pet Terry on Tue 24/06/2003 10:45:39
I finished it! If I work as much with my other games they would be finished in no time ::)

Download game! (http://koti.mbnet.fi/hurjat/petteri/faketrix.zip) | Download hint-file! (http://koti.mbnet.fi/hurjat/petteri/faketrix.hsf) (you need AGS Hint System to be able to view this hint-file, download it http://ahs.shorturl.com)

Screenshot:

This game has:
- 320x240 backgrounds
- some silly animations
- about 13 rooms
- midi soundtrack
- some weird soundeffects
- stupid plot ;D
- puzzles
- and so on

If I would have polished music, graphics and animations this game wouldn't have finished yet... so it is what it is. Hope you like it though.

Flanneltron - don't panik about your accidental voting. We keep your message in mind. It really seems as if Barry Snotter casted a spell to disappear from his place :-\

Squinky, thanks for your information. It is actually possible to check out who voted twice, but we can not find every double voter because it's an anonymous voting system. Doublets will be deleted.

 :o :o :o

;D ;D ;D

8) 8) 8)

WOW!!! I won!!!

There was some stiff competition this month, though.

I'm sure it could have easily gone someone else's way. I was impressed with the graphics in Donnie Darko, and I especially liked the idea of Tom Hanks away.  The Faketrix had an awesome intro, worthy of a full-length game as far as I'm concerned. I never got to dl Barry Snotter (it disappeared), but the screenshot made me want to play it.

Thanks to all that voted for my game, I'm glad you liked it (you might want to have a go at "Al Gurbish in Nick it & Run!!!" now).

;) ;) ;)

Now I get to pick the rules, right?

Expect them to be flexible (I think that's why June had so many entries) and to be posted by tomorrow or the day after.
