Title: August MAGS
Post by: Vel on Fri 01/08/2003 09:58:40
Okay guys, these are the rules for August:
Since my book idea is not as good as I thought, I quickly made up these rules. The only restriction is that it should be based in the XVI or XVII century and should have its own graphics. No other limitations.

What do you mean by its own graphics?

Oooh, might just enter this one... would be my first try at a MAGS game. But then, it would be fun. :)

Post by: on Fri 01/08/2003 15:17:17
Hmm, is that the 16th and 17th centuries or the 1600s and 1700s?

16th and 17th century means the 1500s and 1600s
Title: Re:August MAGS
Post by: Hobbes on Fri 01/08/2003 15:55:54
Actually, as I always learned, 16th century is 1500-1600... and 17th century is 1700-1800.

That's why we're living in the 21st century and it's only 2003.

Right? :)

(As I've already started work on the game, I do hope something from 1620ish is viable).

Edit: Oi, editing your previous post now makes mine look stupid!  ;)

Dear god!  Haven't you people learned any history in school?  The 16th century would be the years 1500-1599, the 17th would be 1600-1699.

QuoteThat's why we're living in the 21st century and it's only 2003.

Very correct, Hobbes, although it actually contradicts the fact you were trying to state  :P

And I happen to call myself a teacher...  :o

Post by: TerranRich on Fri 01/08/2003 16:37:47
Wrong.

What was the first year of the first century? Zero? There IS no year zero.

Therefore 16th century is from 1601-1700 and 17th is from 1701-1800.

That's why the 21st century really started in 2001, not 2000 as everybody (like sheep) proclaimed.

I take great pleasure in telling people this. :D

So, now that we've got the rules sorted... a short teaser in the form of my main character:

I hope it'll take place in europe, not in the caribbean
Title: Re:August MAGS

LOL, yup. It's a European game... not clearly decided, but I'm thinking of going for London.

I'd personally go for Burbon France.
Title: Re:August MAGS
Post by: Czar on Fri 01/08/2003 17:33:11
LOL, this turned into a pretty weird and not correct conversation, while everyone was trying to show which years  are actually 16th and 17th century, they did mistakes, all i can say that Vel was the closest, and whilst TerranRich missed a whole century, but we got his point ;).
So to get it straight
16th century - 1501-1600
17th century - 1601-1700
But that is also contradictary, because we look at century as hunderds, so if you se 745 that is 8th century, but 700 should ALSO be 8th century, because we count the 7!
Title: Re:August MAGS
Post by: TerranRich on Fri 01/08/2003 17:35:34
... You're right, I messed that up.

1st century AD = 1 to 100 (100 years)
2nd century AD = 101 to 200 ( ' ' )
etc. etc.

That's what I meant.  :-[ :)

Does it matter? It's not like any of us could manage to stay historical accurate anyway.

Yay! I finally get to use the harpsichord concerto I've been writing in an ags game. That is, if I ever finish the concerto... or even make this mags game, which I doubt.

Ah well.

Place the Guybrush sprite next to him.... there's distinct difference in pose, colours, expression.

So, yes, he doesn't look like him. Nor will his character resemble him in any way.

:)

i dunno, if he doesn't look like him at all, then how come me and vel both thought of it before we even compared the two side by side?

is the main character going to pretend he's selling fine leather jackets?
Title: Re:August MAGS
Post by: Jimi on Sun 10/08/2003 14:28:44
I think they both slightly simalar because Guybrush is a classic example of what a pirate probably looked like, and so to make him look like a pirate, its only logical to use some of the things that guybrush also uses.

That's MI2 Guybrush, he's even more alike MI1 Guybrush

Can't wait for the finished game, Hobbes!

Ok,

After almost two weeks of working, I've finished my MAGS game. I know August isn't even half over, but my work is going to begin this friday. So, my free time will become limited.

And since I wanted to finish this one rather badly, I decided to spend a lot of time on it right now, and finish it!

The game's called "Buccaneer". You play an ex-Buccaneer by the name of Richard McRoch, an Englishman who now lives in Amsterdam...

...and strangely, one morning, you find a very important item missing. Soon. the quest is on as Richard sets out to retrieve his most prized possession!

Note: I am aware of the rather melodramatic ending. But I kinda like it. :)

Enjoy!

I'm having some trouble downloading it, hmm..
first time it got to 7% percent and then there was an error and it cancelled itself, now it's been stuck on 3% for about 10 minutes.
odd..

Try again... I've been uploading several updates tonight, so you probably tried to download it during one of my upload-moments. :)

For more discussion on the game, it's also listed in the "Completed Games" forum.

On another subject: Are there other people busy with this month's MAGS competition?

I'm afraid to answer, as work is going slow, but I'm hoping to finish one in time. ;)

Sorry I can't offer you any competiton, Hobbes.  I am no where near finishing, and I'm pretty busy all of a sudden.  To satisfy your curiosity the game was about W. Shakespeare writing a play for Queen E.'s cousin's wedding.  He had to complete tasks (find ink to write with, convince someone to make costumes, etc.) in order to put on the play.  Here is some artwork I had been working on...

If you are going to enter MAGS with that game, its gonna be a tough competition.

Ah, pity Noed! Those pictures and the plot look really interesting. But real life has this annoying tendency to vacuum-suck your free time away...

...but well, you've got a few more days and the weekend's coming up. Maybe you can shorten is here and there and release it? Would be fun to play Shakespeare!

;)

What happened to all the early MAGS criteria like must include bill gates, all characters must have pink hair, stuff like that?  ??? Those were my favourite type of criteria..

if you don't finish in time for mags, at least finish it anyway so the rest of us can play it. 8)

I would think so. Pity that there aren't any other competitors... now, what happens next?

We could have a write in campaign, but that would be silly...it seems you win by default.  Don't feel bad, there was every indication you would have won anyway, it was a great game! ;D

Well, you post a topic in this forum with the "September MAGS" topic with your rules.
Title: Re:August MAGS
Post by: AGA on Tue 26/08/2003 20:42:04
There are five days left in August. Maybe someone is working on a  MAGS game, someone who only posts rarely or something. Not likely, I admit, but possible. Wait until September 1st before posting...
Title: Re:August MAGS
Post by: Klaus on Tue 26/08/2003 22:46:19
I also wonder why Magintz didn't yet post anything about the end of the competition. Of course it would have been better to announce the deadline a little earlier, but some days ago he said "5 days left" and so the end is reached now. As noone asked for some more time and noone (except noed) gave an answer to Hobbes question about other entries by now I think that's okay.

Well, calling Buccaneer just a winner by default wouldn't be that nice for this good game. Perhaps noone dared to present another entry after its early release. :)

Concerning the September competition: You really shouldn't just post a new topic with your rules to the forum because the MAGS guidelines are set up by the winner in cooperation with the MAGS team. So the best way is to send a message to the MAGS host Magintz (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?action=imsend;to=Magintz) (usually he contacts the winner) with your ideas about the new guidelines. He and Jannar then will have a look over it, perhaps will discuss some details with you and finally the MAGS team will post the new rules for September.

Yeah, I was going to enter, but my computer wasn't working for a fortnight, and I didn't really like the rules. I should actually finish a game - I've only entered once, and that was kinda unfinished too. And yeah, Buccaneer is hard to beat.  ::)
