Title: Tune Contest 23/08 to 30/08
Post by: Archangel (aka SoupDragon) on Sat 23/08/2003 11:59:42
Right, this week's tune contest is... write a character theme for the love interest in a game. The theme would be played whenever the character is on-screen, or if something else related to him/her is happening. Apart from that there are no restrictions! If you're stuck for inspiration I would suggest finding a MIDI of Nobuo Uematsu's "Aeris Theme" from FF7 - it's a classic. Good luck!

I didn't spend much time on it, and it sucks, and it ends abruptly, and it's not very good, but here it is!

I wish I could play it.  What software is required to view the file, Gromhak?

The latest versions of Winamp 2 or 3 should do it.

Edit: Ghormak, WOW! The samples you used for that piece are absolutely awesome :x

Yes. Give them to me. :P

The piano, however, is... uhm... well. You know.

Anyway, neat. And of course, I'll participate in this one.

Could everyone perhaps post a .mid or tracker file along with the mp3/ogg?

Tis interesting to see how the submissions are constructed.

Come now loominous, your ear should be 1337 enough to tell how it's constructed just by listening ^_^ ;)

I don't know how useful this is, but here's the .it file without samples:

http://www.agagames.com/ghormak/aaarh2x.it

No, don't ask for one with samples still in it. Too big, too big.

Can I have the... oh, I see. :P

Well, mine, incidentally, is coming along. Don't worry.

Edit: By the way, loominous, is a Sibelius file okay for you?

Sure, fine by me but I d guess that if you d export it as a .mid file then more people would be able to view it . On the other hand I might be the only one interested in these things.

So I guess it depends on the general interest. Would anyone else appreciate .mid files?

I think since Sibelius can export midi files with no hassle, that would be preferable, although on the other hand, it's nice having a neatish looking score available to look at. What the hey, why not upload both?

Good point, Archangel. I'll upload both.

And loominous... if no one else is interested in that, then... I pity everyone else. :P

I recognize Ghormak's samples for his entry. They're straight off of the Alesis Classical QCard.

Hardware, that, Geoffkhan? Has it been released as a sample CD or whatever?

It's on one of those little PC cards (PCMCIA card, ROM card, whatever you want to call it). The card holds 8 megs of samples and costs like $200. The samples are high quality and very usable, but it's still not a very good deal. The interesting thing is that the blank PC cards cost just as much as these ones.

Anyways, I own the Classical QCard and the Vintage Synthesizers QCard. They all plug into my Alesis QS6. I'm thinking of taking all the samples on the cards and on the synth and turning them (or most of them) into a SoundFont for distribution.

$200 for 8mb? Jeez. Even if it's a top quality 8mb that's still a bit much.

/me hugz his free 400mb collection of soundfonts

Damn. I only have 700MBs.
Where do you get it all?

You know, I used to have like 6 gigs of soundfonts, but I had to delete a few.

I also have a 140 meg drumkit. It's really great.

Ok, by my watch the 30th of august has now drawn to a close. I'm gonna keep the competition open for another 24 hours because I know at least one of you has something in the works, and contests with only one entry are boring. So come on people!

Hold on, hold on, give me another couple of hours and i'll have something finished :)

Edit: Ahem, presenting an alternative and slightly twisted love theme (http://screen7.adventuredevelopers.com/ds/tune1.mp3). I don't think i've quite achived the atmosphere I wanted it to create, but bleh, I didn't spend long on it.

Cheesy lovetheme for some Final fantasy styled game/movie. Ending arrangement:

The arrangement got a bit messy, hope you can distinguish the melody.

Edit: Fixed the link - Added midi file

edit: the urls are now actually clickable, yay.

Here's a piano quartet (piano, violin, viola, cello). Whee. I finished it not long after the contest started, and then forgot about it completely. Here's a sketchy mp3 render:

http://biphome.spray.se/erik.igelstrom/chartheme.mp3 (http://biphome.spray.se/erik.igelstrom/chartheme.mp3)

And here's a mid:

http://biphome.spray.se/erik.igelstrom/chartheme.mid (http://biphome.spray.se/erik.igelstrom/chartheme.mid)

If anyone wants the score in a good-looking Sibelius file, tell me and I'll brush it up a bit.

Right, that's it for this week. I just thought I'd like to say a few words about each entry:

Ghormak: a really nice piece, opening with some decent chord progressions on the piano, and then filling out with some luurverly string arrangements later. The only thing I would like to have seen is a velocity control over the piano... but like you said, it was a rush job; if you had had the whole week I'm sure it would have been perfect.

Stalkers: alternative and slightly twisted this certainly is! At first I was a little taken aback, but thinking about it there are a lot of situations where this could be used, which could still come under the category of love... just as an example, it could conjure up an image of some naked manga chick in suspended animation, watched by the depraved scientist waiting for his moment to revive his obsession!

Loominous: what can I say? As always your orchestral arrangement is perfect. Not only has it got the big, film-score quality to it, but there is a melody there that would indeed befit an ff game, or similar.

EldKatt: a lovely little baroque/classical piece; it shows the safer, more classy side of love. A solid arrangement and nice melody.

Ok, so now I've got to choose a winner. You have no idea how close this is, but I'm going to have to go for...

Spoiler
Ghormak - it has a character and recognisable quality essential to the video game love interest! Well done.

Woot! It's an honour.

I don't think I can judge a contest now, as I don't know when I'll be able to find a computer in the following weeks. I suggest somebody who simply feels like it starts the next competition. :)

I seem to remember mods starting one accidentally a few days ago. Maybe he could do it now, with my official permission. ;)

Thanks again.

If m0ds wants to step in then that's fine; alternatively, since Loominous was an incredibly close second, he could do it (again :P ).

Since hosting means not being able to participate I m not very eager to do it.

Arent there any other way to arrange these that s equally practical? Having a non-participating host means one less entry n the entrynumbers aren t very high as it is.

Anyway, I hope m0ds s willing to host.
