Title: OCTOBER MAGS
Post by: magintz on Wed 01/10/2003 16:43:52
What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website (http://mags-competition.tk/)

Why should I enter MAGS?
I'm not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

OCTOBER RULES
The game must contain at least 3 different inventory items that have never been used before in any adventure game*, and the inventory items must have something to do with a puzzle to complete the game.

the plot must contain one or more elements of the following:
-post apocalyptic world
-time travel
-divine intervention
-horror
-the meaning of life

Must contain one (or more) forum member(s) (or) their descendant

*Saying any adventure game is a bit too restrictive and confusing as most people havn't played ALL the adventure games EVER made, so we will restrict this to commercial Sierra/Lucas Arts games - SO NO RUBBER CHICKENS AND GUNS! we're looking for original.

As usual ALL games must be in by 25th October - Have Fun :D

Cool rules, though I am not sure that many people will enter - too many limitations in my opinion.

How can you do "post apocalyptic world" and "time travel" if the game's to be set in 2003?

I'll enter, sure, hoping I get my game done before the deadline... I got MAGS fever now :P
Title: Re:OCTOBER MAGS
Post by: Minimi on Wed 01/10/2003 19:25:04
Well this sure is a mix of both rules. My rules where about the 3 inventory items and Anno 2003.

Maybee it's a good idea to scrap the anno 2003 rule, because it comes in conflict with the other rules! Just a suggestion ;) Have phun in this MAGS.

One more question... Can I join a competition where I have set the rules myself?
Title: Re:OCTOBER MAGS
Post by: Ishmael on Wed 01/10/2003 19:34:38
If there are no agreements about this from previous MAGS (which I think is not true... or I don't know...), it could be that if winner of last month could post a game, but if they win, the next month's rules are decided by the who came second? Or something? Just so the same person(s) is not making too much rules... ::)

Whaddaya think of this, my fist draft about the main character:

(M$Paint gif conversion, I was lazy...)

I'm considering entering, but It'll be tough to think of a story. Good thing I noticed this right now and not too late. ;)

Let's see, 3 original items, a forums member, year 2003 (doesn't really bother me so I'll stick to it), and a theme of my choice. I have a feeling time travel will win my heart :D
Yeah pretty nice rules, 25th is also a great date for me cause we have 9 days holiday which ends on the 26th exactly :)

PS: Nice first draft! I really like the clothes/posture.
Title: Re:OCTOBER MAGS
Post by: Ishmael on Wed 01/10/2003 19:56:49
I already have the ending, and so one of the three original items.... :P
Title: Re:OCTOBER MAGS
Post by: magintz on Wed 01/10/2003 20:58:47
Minimi you can enter, but if you win again the person who comes in second would get to choose the rules, so it is spread more evenly between people.

Also i'll scrap the anno 2003 part then. :D

YES! My concept art and plot work! I am ahead! YAY! Though I am a bit disapointed that there is no fixed pallet... :P

Quoteyou can enter, but if you win again the person who comes in second would get to choose the rules, so it is spread more evenly between people.

Didn't I just say that ;D

And now I have allready like half GUI, main char walk anims (need trimming) and basic storyline almost ready... Looks like I'm going to get this done in time :D

you can used fix pallet if you really want to!

ok i've got a beginning and an end, no middle :-\ DOH!
time travel, nuclear wasteland, and horror, a guest appearance of an ags member, even 2003! 2 of the 3 inv items, 3 animated scenes maybe, i don't think the file size of my last game did me any favs so i might leave them..unless the games really good! 320x240 hi color

ok nuff sed, let the games begin! ;) :D
Title: Re:OCTOBER MAGS
Post by: Ishmael on Thu 02/10/2003 10:20:53
I was thinking... does anyone know are the following objects ever used as inv items? I havent seen....

Sink
Toilet Seat
Wallpaper
Elevator doors
BFG9000
Surgeon gear
Coffin
A Minigun disquised as primitive sculpture

?? :P

AND IF NOT, I WILL RESERVE THEM, AND WHEN I HAVE DECIDED WHICH ONES I DON'T USE, YOU CAN THEN HAVE 'EM, IF YOU WANT. ;D

----- EDIT -----

Hey, is there anyone actually working on their games, or am I having a monolog here? I have the GUI allmost ready, just needing some tweaking, the allmost whole basic plot, load of inventory items I'm trying to find a purpose to, the main character requiring talking animations and finishing touches on walking animation. Now what I need to do, when I got these done, is to draw backgrounds, inv items, other characters, put rooms, char animations etc. together, set interactions, do neccesary scripting, make dialogs, check that things work as they should, fix faults, make quick improvements, do final check, fix if needed & re-check, the my game should be done... ;D

(Sorry, just in this very talkative mood again :P)

Heh, well, last night my mind flowed (as it often does at night) and I am entering the contest. I'll try to restrict myself to a not too long game or I'll never finish it. I fI do decide to make it longer I'll release it seperately. Anyway, just to get somthing clear:

I need to use one or more of the themes (time travel, horror, etc) in the game, or I need to have at least one element of each? I assume the former, so I've chosen time travel and horror (I hope I'll manage to make the game seem horrible :P). I need to choose a forum member and make upi items. I've also set it in 2003 because it works for me.

Good luck everyone!

I'm entering. I should be working on Aseyriul or Coell Decka.
But it's only for a couple of days\weeks.
Hope I can get the characters done in time. Better get starting...

I think these rules are awesome!
In my humble opinion. MAGS is better when it's more constricting.

I believe it was Terryb Pratchett who once said:
"Ideas from from Limitations" Or somthing... just don't make me set it in 2003.  :P

CHARACTER THINGIE!!!!!1!11
(http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://eggie.sphosting.com/person0001.gif)

Have any of these been used:
A light-detecting Eyeball,
Two stones that make sparks when you bang 'em together,
A Fingernail.
A magic orb containing the sun.
???

Heh I think Jaw breaker wont break the rules, as it didn't appear in Sierra/Lec games, but of course LV2 is a well known AGS games, using that item may not be good idea.

i thougth these were kinda of good (subject)/plot lines.  i was trying to go for stuff that hadn't really been explored in adventure games at all. of course magintz cut out my coolest idea (my opinion) of an alternate history.  (hitler won WW2, russians won the cold war etc.)  i guess that was just to make the (two) winners ideas make more sense.

altho now that we've dropped the 2003 requirement, it should still work.

anyway what i had in mind for the contest was more of a plot based game.  i didn't want to tie anyone down, just make them use some idaes that haven't been fully explored yet in adventure games.

as far as i'm concerned, you reallly only have to use elements of the plot ideas. ie you don't have to travel back in time so long as your story has some sort of mention of time travel in it.

that's whe're i'm coming from tho.  feel free to disagree.

I'm a passionate fan of alternate history fiction, so I'm kinda annoyed that it was cut out. So I'll do a game based around it, and make it qualified through the whole time-travel thing. Or I'll slack off for another month. No promises ^_^

Greetings,

Is it possible for a newbie to enter the competition?

And if so, where can somebody upload the game? Is there a specific place or must I find a host?

Finally, regarding "post-apocaliptic world", will an abandoned planet suffice or am I pushing my luck on that one?

thanks.

TK ....are you refering to Apocolypse vel.....

The game had a few of the criteria asked .....and it did take place in a apocalyptic world.....(they do need to be created at some point......normally over thousands of years ......i took a short cut).

The way it pans out in the story is what i was thinking after seeing the rules......which then allowed timetravel to be part of the game.

Well, I am trying my best to enter.

I've tried organising the workload, but it is simply "alot"..

keep in mind that this will be my first AGS game so I am still trying to figure out stuff (engine etc).

What is the deadline is for? Submiting or voting (or both).. If I post on the 24th, lets say, will it be okay? or should I do it a few days earlier?

a silly question really..

what should I try to aim for? Graphics? Riddles? Involving experience or creativity in the design? Typically all these should apply, but what does really count on a MAGS competition?

Thanks.
Title: Re:OCTOBER MAGS
Post by: Minimi on Fri 17/10/2003 20:57:23
the thing that really counts, is having phun. I you have no fun, don't enter, if you have, then enter. Graphics don't matter, though it shouldn't look like the drawing of a 4 years old girl/boy WHATEVAH!... and what seems to be important is the plot/story/dialog...you don't need advanced knowledge or something to enter, just make sure you get most of the bugs out, and make a topic of your full game, before the end of 25th of october, so you can enter.

http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?action=download&game=288

The game has occasion swareing, so beware. I hope I got all the major bugs out, just the inventory was a bit odd... But you should be able to play anyway. I have included 2 versions of the readme, a txt one and a html one, choose the one you like. In the readme I notified that I suggest you don't read the MAGS Rules list, so you keep the element of suprise in the game, and read the list after completeing the game.

I'll soon be here to thead this! I'd also like to wish good luck to the other participants.

I'm afraid I'll have to put off my game aswell. I haven't been able to do any work this week or the last, cause of school work: we have a test almost every day, plus a rather large assignment, plus homework. At the end of a day I am so sleepy i can't concentrate anyway. i will, like Femme, keep working on the game, and finish it slowly (I'll probably expand it in this case). Anyway, good luck to all the participants, looks like a great month :)

Hm... It's the October 25th now but Magintz didn't yet post about starting the vote. According to the comments in this thread there could be up to three more entries to come - time for publishing now. (Yes, I read that three other games won't enter the competition  :'()

How about starting the vote in let's say 8 hours from now (see timestamp of this posting)...

Vel is that game name okay to use......or have you copyrighted it.

Maybe it could be some kind of wanking competition....

Vel,bigbro and czar wanking on to a biscuit last to blow his load has to eat it.............

I`ll start on the game, watch out in the game in prodution section....

Congrats PureGhostPR!  I enjoyed your game very much.  I was especially impressed at how you incorporated the "use forum members in the game" rule without making it in-jokey.

Anyway, there were some great entries this month.  Looking forward to next month.  Maybe I'll enter this time.

Anyway, if I WERE two people, I would have voted for PureGhost's game twice, and if I were 50 people I would have voted 50 times so it was me who made it look so close :P

PureGhost, your game was really nice, I hope I can see more games made by you soon :). And somehow I feel this month was a great Mags-month and I am looking forward to november, when its dark outside and cold and many people stay at home making games :)

Totoro......

Maybe the other game was better..........I thought it was very good.

I nearly voted for it myself......

As for voting if i were 2 people (one would go to work and earn money and the other would spend it...)........and if i were 50 people 49 would go to work and earn money and the other would have an excellent time spending it.)......

The remixor comment is in jest................have`nt worked that out yet.

Now if first prize was a million pounds i would be really pissed off...

That's a good idea for the MAGS anyway, could we discuss about it? The winner of next month can choose either to get one million pounds OR to choose the rules of the following month :)

Maybe PureGhost could consider for next month's MAGS a game where famous battles between people are resolved peacefully and they kiss-and-make-up: e.g. Foz and Vel, DG and Yahtzee, Bush and Saddam, etc.

I've given the new set of rules.. I hope everyone will be pleased. I should mention that I did include foz's request (kind of).. after all it was a very close win and I think he earned it.

I hope you will find the theme interesting and fun. I've checked the previous Mags competitions and couldn't find anything similar to it (although the theme is something common to games actually).

As Minimi and Paranoia pointed out to me, remember to have fun no matter what you do.

its not worth getting worked up over, whatever the reviews say its one persons biosed opinion and doesn't reflect what anyone else thinks, i often feel there is some elitism goes on in this forum, and some people don't get the recognition they deceive

this month the voting only lasted a day or so, i thought the votes where counted at the end of the month :-\

I started voting on the 25th, and finsihed them on the 28th, this allows enough time for the winenr to think of the rules and not rush them.

This month's rules look good, I just got them this second but I will have to wait for the first of the month to post them, I may need to ammend them slightly, but they look real good, stay tuned.
