Title: Elless L3 (new trailer)
Post by: Timosity on Thu 02/10/2003 21:29:29
Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals

Update 26/1/04

I haven't updated this for a while & considering the new rules in this forum, I haven't shown any screenshots, although the game is probably over 80% complete.

Total sprites:Ã, Ã, Ã, 3608
Total views:Ã, Ã, Ã, 215
Total GUIs:Ã, Ã, Ã, 36
Inventory items:Ã, Ã, Ã, 39
Characters:Ã, Ã, Ã, 56
Rooms (crm files)     101
Music & Sound         100%

It is a conversion of the original from text parser to point & click using the original graphics, All animations are rebuilt frame by frame, and the scripting is 100% original. The story is the same, but you can't die and there are no walking deads.

Instead of screenshots (which are the same as the original), I've made a video trailer:
1 min 47 secs
DivX 5.1.1 codec required to view it: http://www.divx.com/divx/
(be careful though, you don't want the GAINbundle version it contains spyware, you can still download the codecs free with no spyware, you want DivX, not DivX pro [unless you are prepared to buy it])

There's a 320 by 240 version of the trailer (1.5MB)
And a 640 by 480 version (2.2MB)

I can't hotlink so you can get it here:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/timosity/trailer.html

(note: there's adult themes and situations in the trailer, so sorry kids, you're gonna have to wait till your parents go to bed)

Ooh, sounds cool! :D

I would be really willing to test it. Though I guess that my newbie status will lower my chance of getting chosen quite a lot (Though I won't complain).

BTW, why are so many people making remakes these days? o.O

I'm not too sure, but I guess the old games are the only reason we are here, and the only reason AGS exists (well, in its current form), I have made original games, and plan to make more. For me this is practice, trying to learn scripting in more detail.

No, I don't think you need to have played the original, it might help in testing as you might come across things that never occurred to me.

I'd certainly be interested.  I do'nt know if you need more than the two you've gotten, but if you do, shoot me a pm or an email at cremo(a)uclink.berkeley.edu

Hope Vel doesn't notice this thread!

/me noticed this thread, for he is omnipresent!

Seriously though, I am not against making a point and slick version of old games with the same gfx. I am against making a game worse than the original.

I've PMed Remixor, Vel and Petteri

I'll pretty much let anyone that's willing beta test, until I get enough people.

It's pretty much a full game as it is, compared to most AGS games, and I've still got a long way to go (all of Patti's Quest) which isn't quite as long as Larry's, and more linear.

Playing at the default speed on an AMD athlon 1500+, knowing exactly everything to do, I timed it and it took me 1hour 12mins (which isn't really that long considering how much time it has taken to make)

I can't replicate that, can you tell me what you did cause when you sit, walk is disabled, I just checked and it is disabled. I'm curious in how that could be possible.

Edit: well spotted vel, I figured out that it can happen after you look at Suzi, just try and tell me what you were doing at the time next time.

2.The walkbehinds there arent drawn well.

which walkbehinds? They are all masks directly out of the original game, maybe some baselines need correcting, can you be more specific.

Quote
3.I got stuck in the changing room.

This is out of my hands, the walkable areas are quite complex because of the shape of the area, this is an AGS limitation, you just have to click shorter paths to get to where you want to go.

I know the reason now, it will be fixed for the proper version, Vel, try things a few times  in different ways so you know the point where this occurred, which was after you looked at Suzi, that's what beta testing is about.

I appreciate your help, thanks

fixed

2.The table baselines.

Thanks

3. DO SOMETHING!!!

As I said, this is an AGS problem, I'll try to help with this but I'm not sure if it's possible.

Edit: I've made it better slightly, you can get to the locker with 2 clicks if you are smart, and you can get to the shower and gym in 1 click from the locker, it's hardly a game ruining thing, believe me it was very tricky to get the walkable areas to actually work with the walkbehinds
It was the hardest room in the game in that respect, and it's actually more accurate than the original version as there are a couple of spots in it, that you can see Larry's feet through to the other side of a locker.

Note:

other known issues in this version

*walkbehind in room with cliff just outside bamboo forest not the correct version (fixed)

*falling off cliff in same room, contains experimental falling version

*can't write over saved games unless slots are full (don't really know if this is a problem as most AGS games work this way)

*skipping intro cutscene sometimes skips back to start (fixed)

BTW: I haven't uploaded the fixed version

The exits to walk off of a screen are not always good: the clifftop  right at the start is terrible, especially in windowed mode: only 1 pixel wide! In places you can get stuck behind a walkbehind (in the casino at the show enterance haeding back to mirror balcony, for example): not good :(

There's something wierd happens to Larry's sprite as he enters Fat City, too

Well I think this is pretty annoying, because I save many times. You may want to look RON template, it has a save game gui that works so that you can overwrite saved games.

Interesting, I've never even thought of playing it in windowed mode, and that is probably 1 reason I never play AGS games in that mode now I think about it (plus I hate it cause it's too small usually)

but it is a good point, I can just widen the side lines of the screen. This was a good find as it was something that probably would never of occurred to me although I could just not have the setup in the zip so most people don't play in windowed mode, but I'll probably just widen the side lines (well the gap between the line and side of screen)

Just so you know which method I change rooms in most screens, it's just walking off the edge of screen past the side line I set, when there are 2 rooms off the same edge I just have it so when larry is above or below certain y coordinates going to the different rooms.

Do you mean behind the column on the left side? I couldn't replicate that, I think it must be the same reason as the above,
or do you mean he's off the walkable area after entering the screen after being in the one of the show cutscenes?

Anyone else noticed anything wierd?

Thanks for that Petteri, I'll check out the template and figure it out

Edit: Figured it out, it was just a couple of lines of code, quite simple in the end. So I've got it so you can overwrite a game. But you can still call 2 save games the same name, which is the same as the ron template. I had a look at the Tierra KQ2VGA save game and they have it so it replaces if you call it the same name, plus they have a delete feature, which I'm sure is not hard to do , but at this stage, I'm sure just replacing is much better than the original way I had it.

Thanks for taking the time to test, SSH & Petteri, I really appreciate it.

ok, I've uploaded beta version 0.2

updates since 0.1

*can walk when sitting on sofa in DCH office - fixed
*walk behinds in DHC office and cliff - fixed
*walking in locker room - slightly better than previously
*falling off cliff - fixed
*skipping intro - fixed
*write over saved games - fixed
*hard to find correct locker - I've added look messages to help

Known issues
*you have to click close to screen edge to get to some rooms, which makes it hard in windowed mode. - not fixed as yet

you can download from the same link I gave you before, if you still have it

and SSH, I'm not clear on some of you're findings, check the above post. and if anyone else could check those issues it would be nice.
(and Scotland beat Japan tonight in the Rugby, actually I think they smashed them, congrats)

Thanks for the help so far Petteri, Vel, SSH & juncmodule

What I mean is, when clicking to go to next room, if you click on pixel 2 or 3 on the black column on the left, Larry goes entirely behind the column and cannot be seen: some might think the game has hung: it's kinda an extension of the exits problem.

It was a brief sprite sizing thing

Tawni says "is it a ahopping mall"

Also, having to walk around the other side of Tawni is a bit of not-good-gameplay

I assume that the quiz is not supposed to happen at the start...

Oh, and how do you leave the Boss screen? Nothing I have tried works...

You close it the same way you would close a normal windows window, the 'x' in the top right corner.

Quote
It was a brief sprite sizing thing

Tawni says "is it a ahopping mall"

I'll have a look and see if I can see what you mean.

Quote
Also, having to walk around the other side of Tawni is a bit of not-good-gameplay

ok, I'll have it so he automatically walks around to talk to her, I think I'll do that for the maitre 'd aswell, it will also make it more consistant with the other characters.

Quote
I assume that the quiz is not supposed to happen at the start...

Yeah, I got rid of the quiz, if you click under 12 it quits straight away without any warning, the other ages I figure are ok seeing as I was about that age when it came out, and I played it then (although I didn't let my parents know) Although kids are smart enough to pretent to be older.

The questions in the original are a bit stupid as it is still hard to pass, cause they are now dated, plus they are usually things only American's would know. but it was easy enough to skip in the original with Ctrl-Alt-X, I knew that before I even got the game.

I have also uploaded beta 0.3

*added character control with keyboard - helps in locker room, and also with walking off screen edges in windowed mode

I think this was the best solution for this as it is important that larry walks to the edge of the screen before going to the next room, not suddenly vanishing when behind a tree and appearing halfway across a new room, as for the thing behind the column, it is the same in the original, I don't think it's a real issue.

Thanks SSH, I'll get those things fixed up. you probably won't need to get the updated version unless you feel like it.

EDIT: I've uploaded beta 0.4

updates since 0.3

*when talking/looking at tawni you had to stand near her - now he walks there automatically
*when talking to the maitre 'd you had to stand near him - now he walks there automatically
*fixed character walkbehind for dch love scene - which I had created during 0.2 fix
*extra text in Larry's dancing scene which I had left out accidently
*when using key in elevator you now only get a message the first time

I'll stop uploading stuff for a while, I think this version is pretty decent, and I'm still not sure about some of your findings SSH, but I think I've fixed or worked around most of your queries.

Unless something major is found in the next little while, I might continue with the rest of it.

And If anyone else still wants to test, you are more than welcome.

~Tim

just a bug update:

*rare error when interacting with locker that exits game with message - fixed
*top menu gui was still accessable after pressing F5, F7, Ctrl-Q, also after clicking the 'save' or 'restore' in the control panel, and in locker room when you enter the combination - fixed
*at lookout, spelling 'vilagers' when looking at railing - corrected 'villagers'
*at cabana, when looking at sink after taking the soap, it still mentioned the soap - fixed
*when entering Fat City, Larry is walking in the air - fixed
*swapped a message around when looking at the DCH building
*In native costume & Cherri's outfit, when walking in water at beach, he goes a bit far in before turning back - fixed
*If you sunbake for too long and get the fake death message, after you click 'OK' Larry's towel dissappears from under him - fixed
*the river in the TV room is a bit dodgey - but now fixed (note: the water is supposed to lap over the rocks but not as much as it did)
*Tawni says "is it a ahopping mall"- I thought she liked it up the ..... - fixed

update 20-10-03

*fixed quite a few spelling and grammatical errors
*while using gym equipment, if you used the arrow keys, larry changed to different views including the tanning booth lid - fixed
*while typing in locker combination larry can change directions - fixed
*Also found more bugs regarding arrow keys:
-can still walk with arrow keys sitting in DCH office - fixed
-can still walk with arrow keys sitting in park with TV - fixed
-can still walk with arrow keys sitting in comedy hut - fixed
-piano bar was ok cause when sitting he's not on walkable area

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't uploaded a new beta.

I also thought I'd mention, and I haven't had any complaints about a few little things that didn't come with instruction, but I thought would be obvious and if not obvious they are just part of figuring it out:

1. the magazine in the newspaper - fits in quite subtley
2. when you open the locker, its contents just appear in your inventory - It seems fairly obvious to me, and if not obvious everyone has worked it out so far.
3. using the gym equipment, clicking the larger picture of Larry above to operate - fairly obvious since I only give you the interaction cursor
4. other stuff like clicking objects on yourself eg. the grass to make the grass skirt - fairly normal stuff.

I'll probably make a few things clear in the manual (when I make one), but some of these things are all part of the fun in working it out.

There's probably more spelling errors, but I'm sure it would be hard to even find all the possible messages without playing many times in different orders.

Also note that most of the time when a word ends with 'IZE', I've changed it to 'ISE', both are correct depending on which country you are from, and I prefer 'ISE'

I think it's almost bug free now, well I hope so anyway.

OK, I've released beta 0.5a which is hopefully the final version without bugs, but who knows.

It is available from the same link

The update list is available in the readme file, and also about 4 posts up.

edit: also fixed 2 minor things
*inventory item orchids 'some Orchids' - corrected 'Some Orchids'
*centred items in inventory better

Let me know if you download it, and if you've had enough, let me know aswell.

I've also done a few unnoticeable touchups, and added custom icons for fun.
I've also added some transparancy to the Control panel, Save, Load, Restart & Quit Guis.

Thanks for all the help so far, it's been great

I have finished doing beta testing and have resumed working on new parts of the game.

Larry's quest is now totally completed including unhandled events and The Comedy Hut

*completed Comedy Hut, and added some sample jokes and you can talk to Al & Bill

plus some major things that were missed:

*lots more spelling and grammatical errors - fixed
*could use towel on beach when in drag which caused you to be in wrong view - fixed
*could still use arrow keys when sunbaking - fixed
*could make lei when backstage while in shadows which caused you to be in wrong view - fixed

So if you want the bug free (as far as I know) version, it's available from the same place, Also you can check out the comedy hut.

A very special thanks to Alan Danzis for his top beta testing and grammar checking.

Tim's too kind...

but if anybody else needs some beta-testing done, please e-mail me up at adanzis@loyola.edu.  I'm a writer by trade, so i'm mostly good at finding all those grammar mistakes, but if you need basic error-testing as well, just let me know.

I'm hoping eventually to get on a game-making project with someone.  I can write a script for a game, and i could probably even script part of it in AGS, but i can't draw for the life of me (unless you count stick figures).  But for right now, i'm available for any beta-testing.

I've updated the main post

I've made a video trailer:
1 min 47 secs
DivX 5.1.1 codec required to view it: http://www.divx.com/divx/
(be careful though, you don't want the GAINbundle version it contains spyware, you can still download the codecs free with no spyware, you want DivX, not DivX pro [unless you are prepared to buy it])

There's a 320 by 240 version of the trailer (1.5MB)
And a 640 by 480 version (2.2MB)

I can't hotlink so you can get it here:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/timosity/trailer.html

(note: there's adult themes and situations in the trailer, so sorry kids, you're gonna have to wait till your parents go to bed. It probably also has a few spoilers)

This looks great!  I look forward to it!

(was the trailer supposed to fly through like that or was there something wrong with my player?  I didn't have time to read anything!)

I think it was meant to be fast, so the game wasn't spoiled.

Yeah, ScottDoom was right, but it was also to fit a lot in and keep the file size down.

Hey, really great, after Larry 2 another remake.
I guess after this is finished, all the parts of the series should be completable with mouse!?

Your trailer really looks promising! (Are you making the default resolution 320x200 or 640x400?)

A few critical comments from me (You knew, this had to come, don't you?  ;D ;) )
QuoteAlso note that most of the time when a word ends with 'IZE', I've changed it to 'ISE', both are correct depending on which country you are from, and I prefer 'ISE'
Actually, I think that the "IZE" pronounciation is the original one from Sierra, and as you said yourself it is no typo but depends on the actual region. I myself would often prefer the "ISE" version, but I still think you should leave it the way it is, because this is the american version of spelling and the whole language of the game (word usage for example) is American.
By the way, I am NOT a US American myself, my mother language isn't even English! (I think native speakers already guessed that from my writing.)

QuoteThe story is the same, but you can't die and there are no walking deads.
Maybe I am the only one, but I would prefer that you would keep the death scenes in the game. I can see why you removed them. Some of the scenes (especially the arcade log scene with Patty) could be really annoying, but some of them were pretty funny and were part of the "Larry feeling".
Maybe if you really want to make a death-free Larry 3, you can make two versions of the game, one with the death scenes and one without.
For a version with death scenes you could make it like Sierra did with their remakes, that you can bypass the arcade scenes withouth getting the associated points.
By the way, in your demo video you can see a death scene with Patty falling down the water fall. Was this just a test or did you include it?

And last but not least, do you still need beta testers?  :)

wintermute74, I appreciate your comments,

As far as ISE, IZE, I'm not sure if you're aware, but I've been making it with screens flipped horizontally (mainly just because I thought one day, "wonder what a game looks like opposite") and It just changes your perspective of the game slightly. And along those lines, I've change some spelling and a few other subtle things, (and quite specifically) to the way I prefer rather than the normally just accepted American way (with no offence intended to any Americans, or for that matter anyone)

As far as the Death scenes go, they do actually still exist and have all the animations dialog etc, the only difference is..... (you'll just have to wait)

"Walking deads", well as far as I'm concerned, that's one improvement I've made (although there are only 2 in the original [although a couple are within a specific one] There is also an extra cutscene because of one, (if you make that mistake)

To be completely honest, I'm not really making this for any other reason than it was one of the first Sierra games I ever played, when it was released in 1989, I was age 13 in year 8 at high school, SQ3 is another around that time. But my point being, this is just a game I started to do a few scenes, then decided to complete.

The ways I've done things is all experimental, but still keeping it as close as possible to the original. It's an experimaent to see if I can translate an SCI game with text parser into AGS.

I'm not bothered by comments or criticisms about the game play, it's more about the bugs.

It's more to get my programming skills in AGS to a standard where I can feel confident to make my own original game with less hassels.

It's quite selfish, but I've done it all for myself, not really regarding any outside thoughts, releasing it will only be a privilege to the few who bother to download it.

I'm not looking for any type of status after releasing, I'll just feel I completed a challenge I gave myself, and nothing more.

And I'd be very happy for you to Beta test when I've completed, you can either leave your email here or send it to me via an Instant Message and I'll get back to you at the appropriate time.

Thanks

~Tim

Actually, I didn't pay attention to all details while watching the video, I only noticed the flipping in the title screen, but I just thought that you rearranged some stuff since you also changed the logo.
QuoteI've change some spelling and a few other subtle things, (and quite specifically) to the way I prefer rather than the normally just accepted American way (with no offence intended to any Americans, or for that matter anyone)
I just checked out that you are from Australia (should have guessed that earlier from your logo!), so I suppose you know English "slightly" ( ;D) better than me and are sure of what you are doing.  ;)
So I just wait, until you are finished, and see your results.

QuoteAs far as the Death scenes go, they do actually still exist and have all the animations dialog etc, the only difference is..... (you'll just have to wait)
Great!!! I would have missed them. I suppose that after the dying sequence you just put the player back to the point before he made the fatal error. (But as I said above I just wait and let surprise myself).

What exactly do you refer to, when you write "Walking deads"?
Do you mean the deaths, when you fall for example  down a cliff, or deaths like the possibility of Patty slowly dying of thirst in the bamboo labyrinth?

QuoteIt's quite selfish, but I've done it all for myself, not really regarding any outside thoughts, releasing it will only be a privilege to the few who bother to download it.
So what! It's your work, your game, so you can do as you please.

the generally accepted definition for walking dead is like if you use all your money in Zak and can't travel anymore... the game didn't officially end but there is nothing left for you to do and no way to continue. You're walking around and doing things but you might as well be dead.

Thanks for the answer.
I only knew this phenomenon with the expression "dead end", since you arrived at the end of a possible way of playing and can't continue with the game.

It's still in progress slowly, I've got a lot of other commitments at the moment, so it will still take some time (longer than I'd hoped) but I need to make a living somehow.

but don't worry it will be finished, but I can't predict any dates

The last post in this thread (asking the very same question) was almost 8 frickin' months ago.

Read the FORUM RULES (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=1987.0) before posting.
