9. You can now feed the bird.
10. Fixed Sign in Zitrahajin
11. Fixed Barwoman+Dialog
12. Fixed 'Tunnels' intro
13. Wrote a long list of things I fixed
14. Added READ ME FIRST and E Booklet.
15. Credited SSH

Beyond Reality (http://www.agagames.com/games/others/BeyondReality.zip)

Beyond Reality is about a guy, who, you know. Okay so one day he stays in this inn and then this guy steals this kid and then Ian, the guy you are... he meets this girl and he goes after the kid into this DREAM WORLD, and he does all this awesome and cool stuff that's all just a dream, and then he goes to rescue the kid right, and he like, totally rescues the kid. Only for some reason, perhaps to leave room for a sequel or perhaps it was a mistake, but we never rescue the kid. But it's awesome and you will like it.

I think I'm manic depressive.

Are you looking for bug reports/typos, or would you rather not know about them?

Spoiler

There's only one B in hobo

In my mind, there are two Bs, and everything is perfect and just how it should be.

Except that I forgot to credit SSH. I'm sorry! Did I tell you how HOTTTT I think scottish accents are?

*sigh*

I swore that no matter how buggy it was, that was it. It was over and I was done. Now here are some known bugs which I will be forced to fix.

1. SSH is not credited even though he is awesome.
2. You can't scroll on the menu bar. Not that you ever get enough items to want to do that.
3. Here's the biggy: When you feed... wait. Spoiler.
Spoiler

When you feed the bird the laxatives, Ian BECOMES STUCK. You need to wait until you have the Snake and the Paint. Use the snake and the paint together, and then use it on the bird before/after giving him the laxatives. This'll unstick you.
[close]
4. Hobo only has one B.
4.5 Don't use the rope on the tree. Don't.
5. Entire game will fuck you over, rape you and leave you in a ditch somewhere.

The little of the game I've seen so far is very atmospheric.

A few things, though --

1. I was mildly annoyed that I couldn't skip any of the lines in the intro cutscene.

2. Whether directed at a hotspot or an inventory item, the LOOK AT command rarely elicits a response of any sort.

3. How do you eat the sleeping pills? I can't just USE them, USE them on myself, on the empty pill bottle, or anything.

I second each of these points exactly. The number of "dead" hotspots made it feel like Syberia! I also like to skip text generally (I haven't tried reloading a game yet) and how  the hopping heck do you take the sleeping pills?

I know that you're probably fed up of it by now, but these comments are only there because IT SEEMS SO GREAT: JUST A LITTLE MORE and you will have perfection.

Post by: Dave Gilbert on Tue 25/11/2003 12:55:13
Howdy Yuf,

Hm, okay I played for awhile and I have to agree with the comments made so far.  The lack of interaction just makes the game seem so... empty.  Hardly anything has a look description, so I have no idea what anything is.

Spoiler

There's a note in the kitchen.  YOu can even pick up the note.  But you can't read the note!  Argh!
[close]

I did manage to take the sleeping pills, but it was just through random clicking on my part.

Spoiler

You should have a USE interaction with the bottle and have the character try and open it and mention the child-proof cap.  Also, once I broke open the bottle, I LOOKED at the pills, and Ian ate them!  It made no sense.
[close]

Some doors you have to WALK to, while others you have to USE to enter.  Some doors nothing happens at all.

Some important hotspots don't even have labels at all, for example:

Spoiler

the red paint bucket.  I only guessed there was a hotspot there because the text label shifted when I scrolled over it.
[close]

Also, I don't get what's happening exactly... at one point Ian says he's looking for the lost tribe of the Gouda, but I have no idea who the Gouda are!  I figure it's something I'm supposed to learn about somewhere else.

That said, graphics are gorgeous and the storyline seems interesting so far.  Some nice animations and characters - the fact that Ian changes expression depending on his mood is a very cool touch.   However, this game still seems more like a beta version than a final release.  I want to keep playing but these minor bugs are just too frustrating.  I know you are "sick of it", but if you find time to correct these issues, the game would be improved 100%.

Beautiful game!

Spoiler
Once I reach the giant bird and I use the luxative pills on it, the character gets stuck forever..
[close]

So far the game was really fun to play. I like all the shifting from one place to the next, and some of your animations are very impressive.

It is a pity I didn't save until I he got stuck. I'll see if I can replay this later and post more.

Great work.

Whores.

Okay um SSH, I be needing some scripting help. I have no idea whatsoever as to why the inventory won't scroll. Besides that, I can't figure out how to USE the pills and on top of all of that, what was the other thing? Uh, yeah. Well it was something, anyway. I'll upload the fixed version and then, uh, do something. Credit SSH. That's right. And fix "hobo".

Anyhoo, thanks for all the response so far. I have no idea what my game is like anymore, because I've seen all the graphics and such so goddamned much that I'm literally sick of them. But, you know... apparently, nobody else is, so you know, awesome! Maybe I will fix those bugs after all. In fact, I'm gonna load up AGS right now!

You quit by pressing CTRL+Q. F5 and F7 are Load/Save respectively. Basically, I didn't add a nice load/save feature :)

STUFF I HAVE FIXED, BUT NOT YET UPLOADED, so technically, it is NOT FIXED YET.

1. The B in Hobo.
2. The Rope on the Tree
3. Entire Game will now NOT rape you but may molest you or any young children in the vicinity.
4. Fixed the GUI
5. SHH is now credited.
6. The Bug where he Stands in the Door like a Moron is fixed
7. Inventory Look Interactions added
8. Hotspots given NAMES, instead of informative BLANK SPACES.
9. You may now FEED THE BIRD.
10. Added this one, nice, new screen to the intro.

I'll wait, see what other bugs appear, and fix them to upload the finished version.

no, no... you're final version will have this fixed, too!

5. SHH is now credited.

I hope you spelled it right!

I don't want to be a bother, but people are far more likely to play the game, and thus find any lurking bugs, if you upload a fixed version.
Title: Re:Beyond Reality
Post by: Meowster on Wed 26/11/2003 16:25:56
Oh TOTALLY going in the manual.

I have a group of suckers--- I mean, uh, testers --- at the moment, on a SECRET, HIDDEN FORUM, SOMEWHERE ON THE INTERNET, that are playing it through. They are reporting bugs like wildfire. Which doesn't really say much for me, does it? Oh well.
Title: Re:Beyond Reality
Post by: SSH on Wed 26/11/2003 16:58:56
Pretty please upload the latest fixed version?

Here's some more bugs from you no-so-secret tester:

Spoiler

In the first screen once you are asleep, walk to stairs should work as well as use. Also, Ian floats above the stairs.

As Dave said, why does Ian start going on about the Gouda when you talk to the guy in the pub. Some back story is missing, or I shouldn't have had that dialog option available until I did something else...

The town on the mountain should have bigger hotspots for the places: its a bit of a pixel hunt

The "barman" looks like a woman! And you forgot the "return" in one of your dialog options and it runs through to the next one!

Oh, and turn off your main GUI during dialogs

The metal lead is not spelt "led": that's the stuff you get inside pencils

mannequin, mannikin, manakin, manikin are all correct spellings, but I prefer the first one...

When you look at the shoe mannequin in the shoe shop, Ian should trun to look at it first, and even better get a bit closer to it if required. Maybe he can see through the shoe rack?

The area to leave the shoe shop is pretty small, you have to click right on the edge (not good if windowed)

Reading the shoe shop banner gives some wierd numbers (this might be deliberate)

and i accidentally gave the laxatives to the bird so upload that darned fixed version!

first, I went to the setup and checked all the usual boxes: 85hz, letterbox, anti-alias
then I started the game and pressed escape(happens anywhere in the intro).

When I tried without the Anti-alias it worked!!!!11! BUGBUGBUG

2. Disable Anti Alias mode, skip intro.

Yufster the Psychadet now that the bugs are fixed I've really been enjoying the game, but I'm stuck too.
Spoiler
I've won the race & bought drinks for drunk to get him to tell me his secret. After the cut scene I was in front of doo in woods but I can't interact with anything there. I went back to the cave entrance, but without bugs I can't get past guard, & I can't find any bugs anywhere. Cool Yufster, I love it, even though there are some minor bugs. Some things I noticed:

- The music in town... well, I thought I sent you a bit modified version, but if not, I can send it again :P

Spoiler
- When I entered the bar I wondered what's that clan Ian's talking about. But after feeding the bird and talking with the oldman at the cliffside again, I realised what it was all about. I even had a chat with the clan before I feed the bird, so maybe it would be better that you can't go into the town until you have feed the bird or something...
[close]

Spoiler
- After I got into the caves after scaring the guard at the cave entrance, I can't go upper level, but according the note I should go there. Ian just can't walk there.
[close]

But all in all, nice job :) Story is interesting and graphics (especially cutscenes) are wonderful.

Nice game so far Yufster, I haven't got far yet, but it looks to be interesting. I'll play some more when I have time.

Spoiler
just a small bug, I used the fishing rod to open the attic, while standing around the corner to the left, and he walks straight through the wall (not around the corner) to get to the spot.
[close]

A few more interactions would be nice, and hotspot labels etc. An unhandled event function is actually relatively easy to make, and can help the player a lot, there's a couple of little suggestions, but of course it's up to you.

look forward to playing some more

I met with the Gouda. Still dn't have any insect to use on the guard.
I went up to the cliff and when I use the rope on the tree to climb down, Ian says "no" then does tie the rope and then the game crashes with:

[Room 26 script line 19]

Note: I'm still playing the first version, as I was way in progress to start over with the new version. But from your list of changes I don't think you fixed this bug anyway

I love your game, it's just so lovely weird.  8) But I think the old man at the motel looks like an old woman. I thought about commiting suicide when he was referred to as "his" and not "her". Waaah, see, your game made me crazy... uga uga boom booom  :o
