lo all

Ive been having a lot of problems with this pc and microphones, I've now tried two different mic's and neither work. So i come to you, in a state of despair. Can you guys help me?

m0ds had a go at helping over msn, but with no avail, so far the thing's ive tried are:

-messing around with the volume control function in win98

-using windows sound recorder and putting it on record and then changing what port the mic is plugged into at the back (to see if it picks up the mic).

umm

-the mic has no self volume control so it cant be that

and the mic is basicly brand new.

can i get some help? Im stumped on what to do it seems like nuttin's working.

cheers in advance

if you have a device such as a midi cable or joypad, or even joypad attached to a midi cable, disconnect it and try again, i had the exact same problem when i had my midi cable plugged into the soundcard and my joypad attached to it, when i disconnected the joypad from the cable, the microphone worked.
if it still doesn't work your soundcard might be bolloxed...

Chicky

ha haha hahahaha ha, im sure its funny  ::)

:P

..

Oh and make sure the mic dont look like mine.. cos if it does uve been ripped off (If u haven't heard the story of my mic.. nvm...)

BOYD1981

have you tried going into Edit, then Audio Properties (in sound recorder this is) and setting the preferred device for recording to your soundcard?
also, if you go to Audio Properties in windows, and take the microphone off of mute and set the volume (if the microphone bit isn't there go to Properties and enable it) and then speak, do you hear anything?
try setting the volume to max and leaving mute off, then try recording again, or try some other recording software or software that lets you use a microphone and see if it works then...

I'd definitely suggest getting rid of your old sound card - it might create all sorts of weird hardware related problems.

Chicky

meiz, apperently te problem is a power shortage, so maybe this is caused by having two sound cards, well i doubt its helping.

i cant remmeber which ones which now. ill go chech.

umm. be back after the pc's back together.

LGM

Why the hell would you keep two sound cards plugged in? Are you retarted?

LGM... An avatar like that, and you're asking if someone else is retarded? ^_-

What is this avatar you speak of, woman!?

i actually used to run a pc with two soundcards, one ISA SB16 compatible, and an SB128pci, when i was in windows the SB128 would get used, and when in dos the ISA card was used, even in a dos window, so technically having two cards is possible...

bah im getting treated like a n00b. one sound card is weird, i cant find it. I think its prolly intergrated in the motherboard or somthing. I dunno. So i just bodged the other one in.

ah fuck it i give up

then you'll need to go into your bios and disable onboard sound

Yep. Done this before.

Onboard sound cards suck, they're like, this big |Ã,  Ã,  Ã, Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  | and they'll have sound written on them or something. Just hammer a small nail into the chip if the BIOS thing doesn't work out.
Once I killed a man. His name was Mario, I think. His brother Luigi was upset at first, but adamant to continue on the adventure that they started together.

Yes! Yes! I have AC97' compatible card mounted and It's actually not compatible with anything!

- On windows 98, DirectShow fails

Some games produce double voice, like same sound plays TWICE (Battle realms, Interstate 82', etc), It's damn annoying (Yes, siYes, Sir! On my waOn my way, sir! We're undeWe're under attack!) Argh!

- On windows ME, DirectSound Acceleration fails and AGS games come with silence, unless I set default sound device to Wave mapper.
Double voice here too.

- On Windows XP, It does some sound, but no DOS game is able to produce any sound.
Doublevoice games won't start at all.

- Mic cracks and fizzles all the time. There's just some heavenly days where everything works. It's totally random.

I think I'll try shbaz' hammer-chip-nail-technique.

As WinXP worked most well with this shitty onboard chip, I'd suggest OSC to try a Windows change.

Check under control panel > multimedia if you can use microphone boost. If so, turn it on! Some cards make mic silent when it's not boosted.
Check under volume controls/advanced/recording and check microphone there. Then try to alter it's volume.

Since no one seems to be offering any help, and *some* people seem to simply be mocking you, let me see if I can sort you out:

1: Open your volume controls by clicking on the small icon in the task bar (lower left hand side of the screen on my computer)

2: in the window that pops up, goto options-->properties

3: in the next window that pops up, check recording and hit OK

4 this should bring up something that looks like a mixer with check boxes at the bottom and volume sliders across the face.  Make sure that the Mic input is checked and that the volume level is up.  once thats set, close the volume properties and record away!

C.

P.S. LGM:  Many pro musicians and producers have multipal soundcards in their computers to up the number of inputs and outputs.  Hell M Audio sound cards a designed to be chained together like that.
