im trying a new style.  this is one of my first attempts to actually paint with the wacom.  i didnt paint over a scanned sketch.

BOYD1981

well, it's very blurry and it's hard to tell what it's actually of, it kinda looks like polar bears fighting on a mountain while one sits behind a tree laughing...

I think it's awesome. It's very atmospheric. If you keep working at it to get in the details, it'd be a very grand scene.

Stuh,

I think it looks awesome.  Makes me want to get a Waccom to use for making my backgrounds.  I would use this in a game, totally.

It's far too blurry to be useable as a background.. And what's with the house.. that's the ONLY thing in focus.. If you were trying to do a lens effect.. Other things than just the house would be more clear.

I DO like the style though.. Just don't blurrify it so much.

I like it! It looks very nice indeed, but the picture could use some reworking to get rid the all mighty blur. Because it looks just like I'm looking at it without my glasses, a little more in focus would be nice. Unless that is the effect you are trying to archieve.

stuh505

I used blur to try to show that it was not in the foreground.  Your comments are helping and I'm editing it, I'll post a new version tommorrow...your comments have given me inspiration to take it further (i thought there was nothing i could do...) but hearing that it looked like a big blob of Panda has a way of making me find new ways to improve it...

When I first read boyd's comment I was thinking "ummm...no...." but when I looked again, I actually could make out some demented furry little polar bears.

I really like your style though. I love the blurry effect, but it's probably too blurry to pass as a functionable background. The house looks pretty nice, too. Can't wait to see an updated version.

Quick edit (150kb)

(i) Used the "Unsharp Mask" (not familiar with the english name) filter in PS to increase the sharpness.

(ii) Tinkered with the colors using 'Replace color' in PS.

love the edit loominous, its a nice structured background that need that added detail that loominous put in. In the edit it also added a eary sense to the picture, it looks really cold and creepy.

great!

LGM

I think you've got near-professional quality right here.. With Loominous's edit, it's almostm flawless!

As promised, here is the updated version.  I kept thinking:

"pandas?  pandas! I'll show you pandas!!!"

VERY NICE.

If you can draw characters to go with that you're on a winner  :D

the last version is the best... maybe you could work a bit more on the grown in the lower right side.

Evil

Not a lot of cast shadows on the hill. Mostly the rocks and trees. And the ledge of the hill (ie the tree hill) could use a bit more shadowing on the end. Make it look more like a high hill. Sky could use some stuff, I dunno. birds?

Quotethe last version is the best... maybe you could work a bit more on the grown in the lower right side.

i tried to add detail to the ground and make it a more natural color

QuoteNot a lot of cast shadows on the hill. Mostly the rocks and trees.

what would cast shadows, besides rocks and trees?Ã,  I've even added shadows from the terrain...anyway, I wasn't sure what you meant, but I added MORE cast shadows from the rocks and trees, and added noise to the ground to give shadows from small pebbles

QuoteAnd the ledge of the hill (ie the tree hill) could use a bit more shadowing on the end. Make it look more like a high hill.

i think i know what you're talking about but not sure...I didn't want that side of the hill to have such detailed light hitting it because it is in shadow, it cuts back...I added trees to show this.

QuoteSky could use some stuff, I dunno. birds?

Perhaps...but then they'd be flying in an animated circle or just bouncing around, i think that would look funny (this is a real background)

EDIT: oh yeah....forgot this

Evil

Hmm, well, I think that the hill top, ledge thing should be getting more light. And that big rock needs some noise. But the cast shadows on that hill look good.

loominous

Quick edit (150 kb)

(i) Made the colors less saturated further back in the landscape to add depth.

(ii) Added (ugly) highlight on the tree, since it seems to be lit from the upper left like everything else.

Wow! I really like the latest edit! I'd love to come across that in a game *HINT HINT*

Quotewhat would cause shadows...?

Well, you've got the sky looking very foggy/cloudy, which would be casting extensive, gloomy shadows for one. Apart from that, there's not much to crit really. Well, not in my opinion.

Evil, you have a good point..fixed the dirt.  I am going to pass on the noise on the rock...at least for now.

Loominous, the light is supposed to be coming from between the two mountains.  And that's supposed to be fog, not overcast clouds...I tried your saturation trick, albeit to a lesser degree although it is not apparent in this edit because I have already uploaded.

Yes, this WILL be in a game..."The Tanglewood Tree", "Secrets of the Tanglewood"...haven't exactly settled on the name, but yeah, I've been working on it for some time, the only thing left to do is the artwork which is probably going to take me about a year (groan).

One more thing...each background will have an AGS cup hidden in it  ;) (including this one...)
