Hurrah! With help from the fellows in #AGS and a certain forum, I was able to configure certain things enough so I can connect to the net WITHOUT having to use the CPU and connection-consuming software of AOL. I'll still use the software to check email and webpages, 'cause it's got my favourites and hotkeys and such, but I can now change to the no-software mode to play games or transfer files on msn (AOL's built-in firewall was messing around with the transfer rate, slowing it horribly).

So yay! No more crashing in-game! No more bloody INIT packet errors!

Hoo-hah. This is muchly awesome.

I still look down on you for actually still USING AOL.

It's not like it was my choice. My Dad chose it, and I was too young to be taken seriously (looking back 4 years). At the time, I didn't know exactly how bad it was, either. I learnt the hard way. As usual.

LGM

Force him at gunpoint to switch to something better.. Like MSN or Earthlink or something.

Oh yea.. I forgot Flip was an Briton..

Hmm.. Switch to something less shittier then.. Like.. BritCom.. or something ;-p

We all know that AOL uses it's own software to connect the the net, correct? Here's how you can get around this little problem, sparing errors, bugs and a chunk of your CPU.

This is for AOL Broadband using a BT Voyager modem, you can try it if you like but if you haven't got that steup I can't guarantee it'll work.
Shut down AOL (keep this open in IE or whatever browser you use).
Go to Control Panel - Network connections.
There might be some files in it. You can configure those but I'm not confident on how to. Go to file... Create new connection.
Choose connect to internet.
Choose manually.
Choose DIAL UP.
Then it asks you for your ISP name. Here you can enter whatever you want, but if you wish to be able to click the arrows (the dual green modem arrows in your Systray) to get it to work then you must call it: BT Voyager ADSL Modem.
Then it will ask you for a phone number. Leave it blank, just choose next.

Now you will be prompted for your username//password, your username is your screenname with @aol.com - your e-mail address. I believe it is case sensitive.

Example: ThuperRabbith[at]aol[dot]com

Same deal with your password, it's the one you use to sign in with AOL. Again, make it case sensitive.
Don't choose to make it your default connection yet. If this doesn't work you could do with AOL on-hand.

Now the connection is made but not set up.

It should load up the connect screen, but you're not ready yet; click properties.
Under 'connect using' your dsl modem should be there. It might say IDSN channel before the name, but that's fine.

Click 'configure' next to 'connect using'.
It should be using 64k digital line and negotiate line type should be clicked.

Now close that pop-up and move onto options (the second tab)
De-check 'prompt for phone number'.
And make the idle time after hanging up set to never (so you don't get kicked off for doing nothing).

The 'X.25' button should have none for network and no other details filled in.

Go to networking tab and check out what's there.

The server type should be PPP windows 95/98/Nt 4/2000.
Click 'settings' next to this, and de-check all but enable 'LCP extensions'.
[If you want to, you can restart your PC at this point.]

Click OK to go back to the main screen, and enter in your screen-name (including @aol.com), and your password. Enter these entirely in lower case. I don't know why it doesn't work with capitals, but it doesn't. At least, not for me.

You should now be able to connect at the full 512kb/s.

AOL sucks. I've gotten many of my friends to stop using AOL. It's overpriced and a memory hog, and it's not needed. People mistakenly think that AOL *IS* the Internet. AOL is like...the internet on training wheels. You can't stay on the kiddie 'net forever! :)
Status: Trying to come up with some ideas...
