Please don't comment on shading or detail, as I haven't reached that point yet.

I'm just looking for C&C on the colors and the lines (perspective, etc.). Then I will do shading and detailing, and ask for C&C on that.

The armchair is out of proportion to the sofa. It's too small.
I don't know that I'd lay my living room out like that.
Seems there should be a coffee table where the tv is.
How does the tv get its power?

Unless the drawers and shelves are irrelevant, maybe they should be closer to the centre of the image, so that the player doesn't accidentally walk off screen when interacting.

Looks nice though!
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

Snarky

Yeah, it looks nice. Very impressive.

I'm not sure about the composition, though. Apart from issues with how the room is laid out, the way the "camera" is positioned means that the floor covers most of the screen. Maybe you'll have a GUI to cover up the bottom third or so of the screen, but otherwise you might want to consider if this is what you want players to be looking at.

I don't know what you want to attract attention to on this screen. Currently it's split between the TV and the drawers on the left, which gives the impression that it lacks unity somewhat. Adding a rug or something could "really tie the room together" (and would help with the floor issue).

I know this isn't exactly the kind of C&C you were asking for, but I really don't think there's a problem with any of the things you mentioned.

Actually, I used a 3D program to design the room and then I traced over the result image and added in my own colors. Later I was going to do shading and detailing. So as for the chair being out of proportion... It'd be something to do with the 3D program.

The player wouldn't walk off the screen if trying to interact with stuff on the shelves because there's no left walk-off. Just a right walk-off. The room actually isn't supposed to have a main focus though, because it's just mainly going to be used in the intro scene (the main character hears important news on the TV).

I think adding a rug would help a lot, but I agree that the point of view makes for a lot of carpet showing. Maybe I'll redo the scene with a coffee table, and change the camera view.

Opo Terser

Wow, really nice background

Yeah, sorry, I know you said you didn't care about shading just yet but whatever...

Basically I tried to give the room a little more definition by adding shadows and a little shading, I reworked the bookcase, tv, couches, and added a rug to balance things a little, and I ended up taking out the little table thing because it was bugging me and I thought it was meddling up with the tv. Get ideas on stuff. All done in paint as usual.

MANDATORY: Opo hurry up and make a goddamn game!
Thought i would get that out of the way.

ScottDoom

Well, yeah, I wasn't into the shading stage yet, but that's a really nice paint-over there. Cutting off the bottom 40 pixels and making the resolution 320x200 instead of 320x240 worked out nice. Maybe I'll just make a 40 pixel tall interface at the bottom for my game. I was actually going to go for a more smooth shading rather than the "scratchy" style you used, but it looks nice. I'll have to try it out both ways. The carpet also looks nice. I redid the scene in 3D however, and I'm currently working on tracing it over and trying at this background again...

Ozwalled

Yeah -- that rug really ties the room together.

DanClarke

ive noticed that a lot of people forget to think of the simple things like room layout. Where would you find a room with a television in the middle of it? Televisions are usually tucked off to the side to give a room more space. Just my POV.

Mr Flibble

The bg is okay, the colours are fine, but the composition needs some work.
Basically move the TV.

And I know we should do C&C on paintovers, but Opo, shouldn't the light source be from the TV or something, instead of...the wall?
Those white things may be windows, but they look like pictures to me.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

Opo Terser

yeah i was trying to have the light kinda coming from the ceiling/center, like from a light or something, but whatever
