Browser Hi-Jacker's Killed My Parents!

I know this has been gone over before, but this is different.

I've got Spybot Search & Destroy, which has deleted 19 spys from my system. But my browser is still being hijacked by "windowws".

I tried to get AdAware, but it won't function on my system.

So any advice? There isn't actually anything crippling about a hijacked browser but it is really annoying. I've tried to set it back, which wore off, and SS&S found no other entities.

So is there another Windows95 compatible ad/spy destroyer? Or is there something I can do manually?
I have IE by the way. I know I could just update to FireFox, but I'd rather get rid of this trojan.

EDIT: In particular I'm having trouble accessing eBay. It keeps flitting back to this strange homepage. On on this obscure homepage, I get hundreds of pop-ups saying "Your computer has spys etc. Your OS is Win95! Click here to get rid of them". I haven't clicked because I'm not that stupid.

Any help?

Also pestpatrol is good but not free.

Mr Flibble

HiJackThis indentified a problem and deleted it, but it has come back. I'm trying cwsshredder now...

Use FireFox I find spyware & adware completley null, I can't remember the last time I had a problem, but I can launch IE for one day and already I got adware popups & spyware shit...

Although I'm  clueless as to how to fix what your problem is...

I had a problem with something like that a while ago. I didnt fix it, I ended up reformatting, but that is annoying. Search around, cos I know there is solutions. Try and find one of the programs listed above, as I remember reading a thread somewhere and something like that fixed someones problem.

Anyways, I'd reccomend switching to Firefox. Since I have done that my amount of spyware detected by Adaware/Spybot has been almost none. For example, I used to scan every week and would get like 10 or more problems. Since going to Firefox, I'd remebered today that I hadn't done a scan for like months. I scanned today, and adaware found only 3 bad cookies, and Spybot found nothing. That was sweet.

Mr Flibble

Yeah, as much as I would like this resolved, I'm just going to get FireFox.

Last night I even tried manually deleting a whole pile of java scripts and .tmp files.

I found a bad tmp file, but I couldn't delete it, so I ended up re-writing it with notepad, but to no avail.

Spyware and adware really comes down to where you roam on the internet. I keep a pretty tight knit on what sites I visit and I know 90% of those are all clean and good to go around on without any worries. If I do need to do some extensive searching and go way out of bounds of my general exploring don't just click on any link google gives you. Use your head.. look at the address of the page. Read some of the content.. something seems fishy or if it is a domain that you know will bombard you with crap look elsewhere first.

I have gone 4 months with Adaware and Spybot finding nothing but funky cookies. Tada!

Mr Flibble

Yeah, I am well aware of the kind of sites that does this kind of thing.
But sometimes you wander from the well worn trail.

I found a .tmp file with a pile of urls, including windowws.cc. I can't delete it, as it is "in use" so I use notepad to wipe it clean.

But again, it replicates.

God, doesn't it make you want to make your own virus thing to attack the speaders of this filth (and them only)?

Wasn't there some AV prog that was supposed to counter-attack hackers? anywho. tried deleting it in safe-mode? also, don't be connected to the intarnet while you do it. I know it might sound silly, but I've had some that worked  removing it that way. Also, do you have regscrubxp or anything of the likes?

Mr Flibble

Is Window's regedit anything similar?

Mr Flibble

For Win2000 & XP.

Windows95 falls a little below that bar. But I'm looking into a similar program.

SpywareBlaster is a good free utility for protecting your browser(s) from many known Hijackers/Spyware/Adware junks that invade through browsers.

Check it out at:

Remember to update it after installing to get the most recent protection.

Mr Flibble

I'll look into that, but for now I'm sure that my new FireFox will protect me. I'm pretty sure IE was letting them thorugh.

I recently downloaded and ran SpyKiller (no link provided because it's a trojan horse) which completely riddled my machine with spyware, browser hijackers, extra toolbars, etc. Big mistake.

AdAware and SpyBot got rid of most of them but for the browser hijacks, a little program called toolbarcop saved the day. Highly recommended.

Hmm. I do like FireFox, but I may look into toolbarcop in the future, as one day these fiends may surface and rise against me once again.

I'd hate for this to just end here, as this is an on going problem, and my own still isn't technically fixed. So does anyone else have a cautionary tale of woe? Or perhaps a program that is effective against a spy that others can't shift?

Steve, what page & toolbars did you get? Out of couriousity.

Two toolbars for gambling sites I think.
And a browser hijack that used a dll called XML.dll, and which just kept popping up adverts windows.
It was satisfying to bust that one with toolbarcop.

I came across a link to this site. I havn't really looked at it, but it seems to outline some things that would help.
