Did anyone here play the second Phantasmagoria game?

Am I the only one who found it to be a pretty good game?
Is it a somewhat hidden gem (well.. at least a piece of glass that looks like a gem.. or something) among crappy FMV-adventures, or is it just nostalgia that makes me think it's good?

So sure, it has horrible puzzles. In fact, it's not even much of a game, since the puzzles are only used to interrupt the story flow. Not only that, but they are stupidly hard, and you have to do everything in each chapter fo the story to move on. I never saw why the work day would end just because you showed a photography - that has nothing to do with the story - to some random person at work.
But who would play this game not using a walkthrough anyway?
And yeah, when you do use a walkthrough, it's just a movie pretending to be a game, and based on movie standards, it would just be an average B-horror movie, mainly thanks to the cheesy gore and sex scenes.

But otherwise, the story as I remember it is pretty solid, and the acting on most parts is above average.
There's just something about the game that makes me want to continue playing and see how the story continues, every time I decide to install the game.

But yeah, the main point of this thread is that I just want to know if I'm the only one who liked the game.. I just side-tracked a bit. :)

Yeah, I thought Puzzle of Flesh had a lot of good ideas, and I admire it for going beyond the clichéd haunted house plot of the first game. I found the sci-fi-like resolution (including it's ludicrous puzzles) disappointing - but up till then the story reminded me a lot of Jacob's Ladder, which is one of my favorite horror movies.

Especially the scenes with the psychiatrist were innovative. And I also enjoyed working with in-game computers that actually felt like real operating systems and programs - with the added bonus of supernatural interference.

Wow, taht summed up my feelings for the game a lot better than my post did.. and in a smaller amount of words too. :D

And I agree on the Jacob's Ladder part, even though that movie is a lot better. :)

I still hate that puzzle where you're supposed to figure out the password for your computer though.. ugh..

Me likey that game. Me cannot play that game because me has XP. Me is on a crusade against XP because it doesn't allow me to play that horror game. Jack Thompson created XP for t5his very purpose. I'll shut up now.

What does Jacky f***ing Thomson has to do with Phantasmagoria?

Leave him alone to die in ingorance!
Rui: There are other OS (Windows 2000, Linux, Unix), choose another!

Sorry... I'll shut up now! ;D

'Twas a joke, on account of how violent the game is. And there's no way I'm changing OS, thank you very much.

Back on topic, ayuh. I pretty much loved that game. But then, I have a thing for FMV games. And the story of P2 - up until the sci-fi ending - really drew me in. Despite the fact that all the characters seemed to be nursing some kind of psychopathy or something.

I played that and Beast Within many years ago, and while I enjoyed them somewhat back then, they don't strike me as impressive in retrospect. The puzzles were often too hard and weird, the acting was cheesy and overall it felt like participating in low budget horror movies from the seventies.

voh

Dude, you did not just compare Phantasmagoria II with Beast Within, did you?

Puzzle of Flesh was entertaining, and I thought it better than number 1. But Beast Within is an all-time favourite in my book. One of the most awesomiest games ever.

However, my damn 4th CD is broken, and replacing it with a downloaded version seems impossible, as nobody will pirate a 6-CD game :(
Still here.

Well, I liked A Puzzle of Flesh very much. Sure, that was many years ago, but I'm seriously thinking of replaying it. I kinda like those interactive movies. And besides, this game had the beautiful Monique Parent!  ;D
Seriously, I think Phantasmagoria 2 is a really good game. The puzzles, if I remember correctly, were quite challenging, I had to use the walkthrough (I figured out the RATBOY puzzle myself but failed finding the password to Warner's computer). The acting was surprisingly good (for a game) and the characters... well, Curtis was kinda bisexual, Trevor was gay, definitely a brave decision.
(On the other hand, I liked the first Phantasmagoria, too. I admit it has its problems (acting, length...), but the atmosphere is reeeeaaaaly scary.)

Yeah, I remember it as being quite decent, as well. Kind of a cheesy Cronenberg ripoff. And even second-hand Cronenberg is well worth the time, if you ask me.

I liked both Phantasmagoria games.  I disliked the ending of the second one, but I still enjoyed them.  I usually take them out and play them about once a year.
The hardest thing in this world... is to live in it. (Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers in "The Gift")

Completely forgot to mention that.. that's just incredible, and I love the game so much for that.
Phantasmagoria 2 has got to be the first, if not the ONLY commercial game  I've ever played that features a homosexual guy, without making a fuss over it.
Sure, there is that small side-plot about how
Spoiler
Curtis is starting to feel attracted to Travis, but that doesn't really matter all that much..

There's nothing about how hard it is to be gay and how we should be more nicer to them or anything, just a guy with a sexuality.. no different to the millions of heterosexual characters out there.

I love it.

Kal-El

Yeah I've got the game myself.

To be honest I remember really enjoying it too. I remember the puzzles being very simple to be honest; all I had to do was click on everything and talk to everyone as much as you could and the story would progress.

Was there ever a Phantasmagoria III?

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Not even planned, afaik, unlike say Gabriel Knight 4.
