I've actually been working on an ags sequal to grim for a quite a few months, among other games, but I think having a 2d remake of the original with a pont and click interface is a good idea but a lot of work. :)

The 3Dmodel of Salvador has been extracted from the GF-demo. The 3D models are stored in files .3do.
I have extracted the model and all the textures with ScummRev, then I have opened the model with Milkshape importer "Jedi Knight 3do...".
This works only for the models in GF-demo and not for the models in GF-game, because in the game they are coded in some way.

making grim fandango into a monkey island 1 style 2d game would be neat. anyway, i'll be following your progress, since i love the game.

Uhm, copyright laws work quite differently. LucasArts has copyright on the characters, the art, the sound, the music. If you use that without permission, they've got the right to sue.

Also, an homage or not, if the point is to recreate the game with only a different GUI/control scheme, and the rest the same, you're quite definitily risking becoming a nuisance in LucasArts' view, because you're basically offering the same game they're offering, but for free.

So yeah, continue if you will, but I think it would be both more rewarding, as well as worth your while (remember what happened to the Garfield game?) to go with an original game rather than basing it on GF.
Still here.

Voh, I completely agree. If the game is going to get any exposure, it's going to be shutdown by Lucasarts.

I agree to a certain point.

What about VU & KQIX?

No I am not trying post an off topic post but something to think over though!

Making a high-grade free fan-game of a long-lost series like KQ and dealing with Vivendi is way different from making an amateur modification to an existing game that's still being sold and dealing with Lucasarts. I promise to you that if you recreate the existing game with a different GUI with the intent of distributing it, Lucasarts will most certainly close it down upon hearing about it. Lucasarts has an anal reputation of closing down even the most uninspiring spin-off games of their existing games. So why not cease and desist now, and avoid the lost time and work?

Refering back to my previous post about the legality of the this.

I was unaware at the time of writing, that you had actualy somehow ripped lucas-arts characters from the game.   I was under the impression that you were drawing all your own background graphics and making your own character models. I was also under the impression that Grim-Fandango was no longer in circulation and could be classed as "Abandonware".    However the game is still being sold, so it would probably be best if you spent your energies on something else. OR at the very least do a new grim-fandango and do _NOT_ use any of Lucas-Arts ripped graphics and character meshes. Or you will get shut down very quickly.

Cheers,

Working with abandonware has taught me a few things about how different companies work. Since the point of abandonware is to offer games for free download if and when they're no longer officially sold, I've had quite a bit of cease and desist letters.

Apogee was friendly, VERY friendly. They expressed that they understood why abandonware was around, and they'd like to support it, but aren't able to. Especially in the Keen 6 department, which is copyright iD, and while Apogee wants to sell it or release it as freeware, iD won't let them (from a direct convo with Joe Siegler).

Sierra was very friendly as well, and simply requested a game to be removed. Though it's technically abandonware, when asked I remove.

LucasArts' first contact was a threatening letter of cease and desist, in which a lot of lawyerisms were used, and they basically told me that if it wasn't off the site within 2 days of sending the email, they would sue me for copyright infringement and theft.

So yeah. Fucking with LucasArts = a pretty darn stupid idea.

VU isn't Sierra - they don't care as much about the olden days and the copyrighted works as Sierra themselves do/did. If Sierra was still on its own legs rather than a part of a big combination of shitty companies churning out rubbish, there's a good chance the KQIX deal would never have been made.

OK friends!!

THIS IS THE END, I think it has been one of the project faster than always.
I close this project not for lawyers reasons but because my idea:
"make a video game which everybody could add a little piece"
it hasn't been received, except from one or maybe two persons, which I make my thankses.

This is not one melancholic closing, but only a good bye... calm I will not make an other video game on GF, but I don't abandon my idea.
I already have in mind something for being able to re-propose it.

The job that I have made (very little) will be used as ulterior demo for Character3D plugin.

for Thomas VoàŸ:
if you want to make the German translation, in the rar yuo'll find the translation source file "ITAtoXXX.txt" that unfortunately is in Italian. Thanks for the offered aid. I will hold you for the future.

in the demo there's also a partial English translation, if someone wants to finish it or to improve it (my English is ....Ã,  Ã, :P) I'll be very glad.

I can understand your reason, why you don't want to continue your work on this game. I had the same idea to create a sequel of a famous game (FotAQ!). But I decided to quit this project, because I think it is to risky for me to make such a game.
So I can accept your decision anyway.

Yeah, I was in the team for that one, too.
I hope, I'm not a jinx, or something!Ã,  :(

I think your idea to make a game in a large colaboration with lots of people is a fantastici idea!    :)

But I can also see why you didnt have more people offering to join in, as a lot have concerns about the whole project being shut down on copyright reasons.

Afterall nobody wants to put time and effort into something that will not be allowed distribution   :(

I am sure you can still do a game collaborating with lots of others, but based on an original idea.  ;D

I wish you the best of luck for your future productions  :)

Cheers,
             Nick.
