Anyone know what to do to get the wood in the water at the start of the game?

Interact with yourself to remove your hook.  Use it on the mast.  Now you'll be able to use the mast-and-hook to retrieve the piece of wood.

The rudder is completed and attached to the back of the raft, what now? He doesn't steer the raft, I already have the telescope fixed, I just don't know what to do next ... ???
