I tried to make a tune for the intro of my game. I'm going for a bittersweet "autumn" feeling. Not quite finished yet, but not quite sure where to take it from here.
Please reply in "non-musician" speak. ;)

Intro tune thingy

airgo

i really like this one, bittersweet indeed
reminds me of secret of mana

which programm did you use, if i might ask?

Hajjamujja

Perfect! I love the way how the baritones coordinate with the G majors scales, and the way the third beat note overlaps the #F major.

(....I'm just kidding, I don't have a clue what I'm talking bout ;))

No, quite simply: You nailed the feeling perfectly. At first I thought it was kinda boring but then after a while you get it.
Good song!

Tuomas

A nice tune indeed. I thought I noticed some off scale notes in the end of it, but then I listened again and didn't.

Anyway, I don't know what the intro shall be like, but if it was a song, I'd try and add some climax to the end. Better even , I'd make the melody more whole so that it'd be easier for one to catch it. But this is great for an intro. when you have the intro ready, you might want to think of what I said, and think if it really suits. Most likely it will, and I'm just talking bs here, but anyways.

It's nice, it's slow - I think it suits your description well. It might be nice with a little more variation in it, like changing the key at some point. Just a suggestion, as it stands - it's fine :)

seaduck

First, I bow before thee, because I wouldn't be able to write something like that...

Ok, I'm not a musician, but I'd say you should add some velocity(=loudness) variation, also it seems to go on an on without resting, perhaps you could add more obvious breaks(or transitions or what's the right english term?) - let the music rest for a while, before recommencing with renewed energy (like when a human needs to breahte-in when speaking).

To the musicians here: Anyway, if I'm talking nonsense here, don't hesitate to tell me off.

Anyway, I like it, very good job!

Moresco

beautiful song.  i'd like to hear some second melody though towards the end over the first melody.

Wow! So many nice comments! :)

airgo: Thanks for the tip on Secret of Mana. I checked out the music from it and got some ideas. Who knew RPGs would be good for anything?  :=
I used Fruity Loops on this track. Been looking at Anvil Studio too, which is free, but the interface there confused me a bit, at least when it came to creating and managing patterns.

Hajja: You're partially right, it is kind of boring as it is. Thinking about adding some piano to it to liven it up a little. Not too much thoug, has to stay bittersweet.

Tuomas: I have something planned for the climax, no worries!  ;D

m0ds: I would love to change the key and make you happy, but I'm not quite sure how one goes about doing that? Is it to shift all notes X-number of spaces up or down? I'm a moron when it comes to musical theory, I just play by ear.

seaduck: I assume you are talking about different notes playes at different volume? Is that possible in the MIDI format?
Not sure if I have time for a plateau in the tune. Since I'm doing everything in the game myself (at the present time anyway) the credit list will be rather short...

Novellice: I agree. As I said to Hajja I plan to add some piano to perhaps play some slightly faster loops to tie it together more. As is it's a bit staccato.

Book: Thank you!

Sounds very nice so far, keep working on it :)
Changing the key is generally just moving all the notes up or down, with a few exceptions.Ã,  In your piece, you could try moving everything up 5 notes for a while, and then maybe back down again later on.Ã,  It sounds better as well if you change the melodies a bit for the new key, it adds more of a contrast.Ã,  Here's a very quick example of changing the key and going back again.Ã,  It changes at 0:47, and back at 1:12.Ã,  Feel free to open up the MIDI and have a look if you need to.
