Half centaur/angel cartoon guy

I have the itch to make another game! Before I go animating this guy, I have to ask:

1) Improvements before I animate him? His left hand is bothering me. I won't do any shading or extra colours because it will put me off animating him! I made this guy much smaller than the last cartoon guy I did for even more easier animating! Anatomy isn't very important because he's a cartoon, unless there is something that looks just plain wrong to you!

2) Secondly, would you like to play a game with graphics like these? Is it preferable to my previous game's sprites? (In my signature)

-Try to move his left hand behind his pants/belt.

-His left horn is ATM wider at the top and more narrow in the bottom. Try to make it opposite.

-His beard is slightly wierd positioned. Try centering it more.

Otherwise, I think he is a great improvement to your last games chars! :)

Good job buddy!

ManicMatt

Thanks! I changed his eyebrows and hair on my own initiative.

Moved the beard.

Raised his left shoulder and hid the hand.

The left horn is tricky for me because of the angle he is facing.

Not to be picky, but a faun has horns and hooves and two feet, while a centaur has the lower body of a hirse and no horns. So that's a faun.

THat, and his hands should be lower to look more natural.

ManicMatt

Don't worry, he isn't any particular mythical species, I just wrote that because I needed to describe him right now, for the time being.

I guess Faun is more accurate though. But then he has angel's wings, but he's not an angel either!

I think his hands are fine where they are, thanks! Note his trousers are hanging rather low.

Buckethead

Hmmm the wings look a bit like they could also be hair coming out of his back. And his horn also could be donkey ears. also his 'feet' could stand out a bit more like the rest of him. And his left shoulder is still a bit higher then the other. For the rest I really like it! keep it up  :D

ManicMatt

I see what you mean. How could I make them look more like wings? (Think Gabriel or (Arch)Angel from X-men)

Same for the horns? (Except I like the shape of them)

I don't mean to be pushy or anything, but his trousers appear to be pretty much where they usually are, just below the belly button, while his hands should reach to half thigh. If the pants were hanging you should be able to se his genitals(underpants).

Also, about the wings, they're usually feathers, see, here you have lines going throughout the shape of it, maybe you could try drawing the feathers or a featherlike pattern instead. What's more, the wings should prolly come from a bit to his left in order to be in the middle. Now the dividing line looks as if it's a bit to the other side.

But as you said, anathomy isn't that impostant, so I'll eave it be  :D

Before animating...
...draw the side view. Looking at his pants and feet right now, I'd say they would look really weird from side. Which might mean that walkcycle wouldn't be very good.

ManicMatt

Thanks!

Better?

Increator: Well.. this would be his side view, actually!

Okay, I think I am happy with him now! Cheers guys! When I come to making a character in my game do a walking animation, I always suck at them, even with tutorials, so I'll be sure to put it up here when it inevitably is made and sucks!

Buckethead

here's my paintover:

I don't think the wings are any better. But I'm not a very good artist afterall. I succeded at doing horns better. I hope you like it.

ManicMatt

Cheers! I took your horn design and curved them, and made the feather outline colour darker. Seems to have done the trick!

Buckethead

great!  :) if he would only stand a bit more straight

Krysis

His right shoulder is a little fat and the ears seem a little too big. The other thing are the wings... Here's a quick&simple reference I googled:

I hope you get what I mean. Maybe you should play with the colours a little.
Nice work though.

thewalrus

Very nice work, Matt.... Much improved from your first game... I'm glad to see that you will be working on another game. You know you got a beta tester here..... Cheers, my friend!!!
Thewalrus

Goo, goo, ga, joob!!!

Intentional! Thanks for the crit, but I am moving on to other sprites and backgrounds now! I can't improve this guy TOO much, that would make the other sprites look inferior, although I have learned some things about what to do when I draw the next sprite.

TheWalrus: Thankies! You'd like to beta test this game too? Cool, okay!  :D

Well, this is totally up to you, but perhaps you could try using the spriting tips you get for one sprite, and use the same techniques on other sprites. If you never take these tips to you, you never improve! Or... In a much slower rate anyway.

You made the horns look much better, but I still think there is much to be improved!

For example:
QuoteI don't mean to be pushy or anything, but his trousers appear to be pretty much where they usually are, just below the belly button, while his hands should reach to half thigh. If the pants were hanging you should be able to se his genitals(underpants).

I don't see that you actually took this crit into considerations in your edit at all, even though it's what I'd say is the most anatomically incorrect here. (:P) I know you want to make cartoony sprites, but even cartoons have right proportions to a certain degree!

Good job anyways amigo!

Read my last post.

I looked, I thought they were fine to me. Yes, about three pixels too short if he was real. But if that bothers you, you'll hate the backgrounds..  :-\
