Most of you probably already know that Duke Nukem is going to be released. Soon. And it's not even a joke. There are in-game videos of it all over the web.

So I thought it was an occasion to dig this hilarious video from Yahtzee, that was made during times of skepticism : http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/748-Duke-Nukem-Forever

Oh, and the actual game footage : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxKL1By-6j4&feature=related or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TR_Vzu6MSY

As Duke would say.

"IN YOUR FACE BIAAATCH"

:D
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Buckethead

To be honest. I can't really pretend like this is awesome just because Duke Nukem has a cult status and it was been in development for 12 years. But it's pretty sweet that it is still coming out!  :)

Chicky

Duke Forever is gonna flop  := the assets used in the game are mismatched and the engine looks very clumsy and dated. With Halo Reach literally 4 days away i can't see Duke topping it unfortunately!

I will still buy DN:F seeing as i've been waiting a good 10 fucking years at least but i can't see it cutting the grade for console gamers.

It looks like it plays like Serious Sam :(

Radiant

Yes, because lengthy development worked so well for this game...

Monsieur OUXX

The length of developement has nothing to do with it : Half Life took forever, and Half Life 2 even longer...
Moreover, we can consider that all the work done by £DRealms has been thrown to the bin (even though they don't say it) and it's a professional studio that's making a new game.

It indeed plays like serious Sam : It's supposed to be violent, random and fun. Balls of steel, man!

The game won't be very pretty, but if it's made for PC, it will still be prettier than any console game (haha, big provocation, but it's true :-D). I think their main problem will be taste...

Who knows? Maybe all the fans will buy it and it will be an artificial success, or all the fans will download it and it will be a flop. Everybody, remember that Chicky said he'd buy it ;-)

Monsieur OUXX

Oh, by the way, I'm being carried away. My initial post was more about the funny video that DN:F itself ;-)

Snarky

Duke 3D was childish, gratuitous, derivative, and great fun. I still have fond memories of it, and particularly of making my own levels using the BUILD editor that shipped with it.

That fondness, and the legend that's been built up over the long course of DNF's development, might be enough for me to pick up a game I would otherwise never buy. And I bet there are a lot of people who feel the same way. Twelve years is about the right time for nostalgia to really set in. If the game is halfway alright, I think it will sell well enough.

GarageGothic

I find it strange that 3D Realms didn't release a proper gameplay video along with or right after PAX. Instead we get this wobblycam footage with zero contrast or color on the screen, which frankly doesn't exactly improve my impression of the game.

I used to love Duke Nukem 3D - mainly because it was the first 2.5D game with an easy to use WYSIWYG editor - and stood firmly by it and the other Build engine games in the Duke vs. Quake 'war'. But in this day and age, do we really need another corridor shooter about musclemen fighting aliens? I'll probably play it just to see wtf they were working on for all those years, and hear which movies they ripped quotes from this time. Unlike Alan Wake, I don't really have any expectations to crush for DNF, but I don't wish it to fail epically like Daikatana - in a way I'd like it to be a fitting coda for the FPS era (of course me wishing that it's over doesn't make it so, but enough with the shooting already).

Anian

I would think they'll move the engine to Unreal, since Gearbox used that for Borderlands.

Some reports that had whack at it in PAX say that it's...well it's what it was supposed to be - humor, dirtinesss, giant aliens and similar. It was never going to be anything more and probably couldn't be. It's basically a Schwarzenegger 90ies sf movie.
People who liked and expect Nukem, will get just that. People who expect the best game EVAR! Will not.

Is it going to flop? I think it can go either way, and the final earnings depend on the deals made, who will bare the cost of 12 years of development?

On the video thing, it was chosen as the best of Yahtzee. I kind of disagree, since I didn't even get a chuckle out if.

GarageGothic

Haven't they been using the Unreal Engine since 1998? The Doom 3 thing was a misunderstanding.

Sslaxx

Frankly, 3D Realms should've just sold their entire IPs to Gearbox and shut up shop. They're a joke in the industry - and I'm astonished Gearbox has employed ex-3DR people. If I were Randy Pritchard, I've have made 3D Realms pay Gearbox to take Duke Nukem off their hands.

Will it pay off? I'd imagine the guys at Triptych certainly hope so...

Yeah, seems so, Iwas just responding to Chicky saying the engine was clumsy. I don't think U3 or UDK is clumsy, it's very optimised for FPS games, while it does seem that games usually look similar in it, but hey, nothing a shader can't cure.

Mr Flibble

Maybe it's just the best marketing strategy ever conceived?
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

[Cameron]

There was a gamesradar (I think, maybe Kotaku) article that sort of summed it up talking about how most shooters now are so plot heavy, even the ones without great plots, and often so dramatic and gritty, but DNF would be a nice break from that. It's not about plot, its about Duke just doing what he does best. One liners, strippers and stupid fun.
That's all I really want.

InCreator

Me too. But even more I'd love to see something like Heretic or Hexen... or even Blood. Even greater would be Shadow Warrior remake...
New games are all about M4A1, camouflage and one bullet kills. Where's that old good silver key searching fun?

How can people prefer talking about Duke Nukem over the deleted scene from Return of The Jedi? I don't get it. :'(

Cause we haven't seen Duke Nukem yet. We've only seen one part of the "movie".
